Bresnan likely to play in Adelaide

Allrounder Tim Bresnan has been added to England’s Ashes squad and could play in the second Test in Adelaide, which starts on December 5

George Dobell02-Dec-20130:00

‘Praying for Bresnan to be fit’

Allrounder Tim Bresnan has been added to England’s Ashes squad and could play in the second Test in Adelaide, which starts on December 5.Bresnan, 28, was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his lower back in August and missed the final Test of the Ashes in England. While he arrived in Australia with the Test squad, his on-going involvement was always dependent on him proving his fitness ahead of the second Test.Having taken four wickets in the England Performance Programmes’ match against Queensland Second XI last week and undergone a thorough fitness test afterwards, he has now officially been added to the squad. He has also been bowling at full pace in the nets for a couple of weeks.Chris Tremlett filled the third fast bowler’s spot normally taken by Bresnan in Brisbane but produced a modest performance. With England also keen to strengthen the batting after a dismal performance in the first Test and the loss of Jonathan Trott, Bresnan, a far better batsman than Tremlett, could be set for an almost immediate return. Both Steven Finn and Boyd Rankin all but bowled themselves out of contention with disappointing performances in Alice Springs. It appears that Gary Ballance will benefit from Trott’s departure and win the chance to bat at No. 6 in Adelaide, with Joe Root or Ian Bell set to move to No. 3. Root, despite an unconvincing performance in Alice Springs, appears the more likely choice, with the England camp reluctant to weaken a strength by moving Bell from the No. 5 position from which he largely defined the previous series in England.

Collingwood's value immense to Durham

Paul Collingwood appeared genuinely surprised by the suggestion that he might be considered a candidate for the Managing Director of England Cricket position soon to be vacated by Hugh Morris.”Me?” he asked. “Managing director? I don’t think so. I’ll leave that to the posh boys like Straussy.”The suggestion is not so ridiculous, though. Collingwood’s record as a leader is exceptional and he has a range of experiences that would render him an intriguing candidate. After an unhappy period as England captain in 2007, he returned to lead the side to the only global trophy they have ever won – the World T20 in the Caribbean in 2010 – and has now helped Durham from the bottom of the Division One table in July 2012 to the brink of being County Champions in 14 months. In that time, Durham will have, with victory over Nottinghamshire, won 14 out of 21 Championship games in which he has captained and a club record five in succession to seal the title. And all that against a backdrop of financial trouble that prevented the acquisition of new players or an overseas cricketer, of high-profile injuries and departures (the likes of Michael di Venuto, Ian Blackwell and Steve Harmison have all, for one reason or another, been phased out in recent times, while Dale Benkenstein has missed most of the campaign through injury) and of the heart attack to head coach, Geoff Cook, that cast a shadow over the club for several weeks. It is an achievement worthy of the highest praise. This challenge, Collingwood conceded, came at the right time of his career. With his international career over and many personal ambitions sated, he had the combination of experience and personal ability to instil the values that he saw benefit England into a Durham squad that, for all its skill, had an ‘old-school’ feel when it came to matters such as fitness and preparation.”I have been a reluctant captain in the past,” he admitted. “I am not one to go out calling for the captaincy whichever team I have played for but when I’ve done it, I’ve done it to the best of my ability.”This has come at the right time for me. It’s kept me fresh and it’s given us the chance to take the club forward five or 10 years. It’s not just about success on the pitch, it’s about instilling a culture in the club that can take us into the future.”That culture has seen several high-profile players – the likes of Harmison and Blackwell – sidelined and opportunities given to young, locally-developed cricketers who were more in-tune with Collingwood’s fitness ethic and, in general, preference for reliability over flair. He concedes that his own powers as a player are waning. He has claimed only one Championship wicket this season and, though he has passed 50 five times on some demanding surfaces, he has not managed a century and his average is a modest 30.85. He dismissed the suggestion that he will seek a new contract after the 2014 season with a snort of laughter: “I doubt it,” he said with feeling.”That would be pretty much it for me, I would have thought,” he said. “I am enjoying it but I’m nowhere near as good a player as I was. And that frustrates the hell out of you. When you get a ball and think ‘I used to whack that.’ I’m scrapping more than I ever have. I’m trying to play shots I used to be able to play and the ball isn’t going anywhere. But I guess I am still contributing and I would be very upset if I wasn’t.”Collingwood is a little coy about his future beyond 2014. Partially because of the heart attack suffered by Geoff Cook a few weeks ago, talks about the coaching structure at Durham at present are sensitive and, perhaps, inappropriate. Until a few months ago, it was presumed that Dale Benkenstein would, in time, succeed Cook with Jon Lewis as his deputy. Now, however, there is a thought that it may be Collingwood and Lewis who take the club forward. Understandably, Collingwood is reluctant to be drawn on the subject, limiting himself to saying “conversations have taken place” but nothing is decided. He is also modest about his own contribution to Durham’s achievements. “I’d put this success down to the skilful players we have in the dressing room,” he said. “Several young guys have put their hands up and I always feel that we have the attack to take 20 wickets. We have an exceptional attack and in Graham Onions – whose averages are ridiculous in the last couple of years – and Chris Rushworth we have bowlers who know how to bowl on this wicket.”The days of former England players going back into the county game are, sadly, declining. The lure of media work and foreign leagues has given them other options and, as a consequence, seen the domestic game robbed of just a little bit of the experience that can help develop the next generation. Collingwood has shown the value of such players, however, and deserves much of the credit for Durham’s fine achievement.

Hogan, Rees help build Glam lead

That advantage could prove to be a decisive one in a low-scoring game in which another 12 wickets fell on day two to match the 15 that tumbled on the opening day.Glamorgan ended the third day on 237 for 7, opener Gareth Rees top-scoring with 52. That was after Daniel Bell-Drummond had provided 78 before Kent were bowled out for 175 in their first innings. It gave the visitors a slender lead of 17.Kent had resumed day two on 102 for 5, still trailing by 56 runs with Bell-Drummond reaching his half-century from 111 balls. But, with the visitors on 136 for 5, tall seamer Mike Reed bowled Adam Riley with a full-length delivery.Hogan grabbed the important wicket of Bell-Drummond, lbw, and then two balls later the Australian bowled Mark Davies off his pad. Charlie Shreck edged behind in the next over to end the innings, before Rees negotiated the only over remaining in the morning session. In the afternoon Rees went on to complete his half-century as the Welsh county reached 121 for 3 by tea – a lead of 104. But Glamorgan did not make the best of starts to the innings, finding themselves 15 for 2 inside seven overs. Will Bragg departed lbw to Davies, who only two balls later claimed the prize scalp of Murray Goodwin caught behind. But Rees and Chris Cooke added 67 for the third wicket, helped by Rees despatching offspinner Riley by straight-driving the youngster for four and six. But in the next over Riley responded by having Cooke caught at short leg by Bell-Drummond.Glamorgan reached the 100 mark in the 32nd over before Rees completed a 92-ball fifty shortly before tea. But he perished straight after the interval, edging Calum Haggett behind. Haggett then trapped Ben Wright, Glamorgan’s top scorer in the first innings, lbw with the total on 155. Riley then had Jim Allenby caught at deep backward square after miscuing a sweep on 29.Ruaidhri Smith and Mark Wallace guided Glamorgan to 200, but that was followed by Wallace edging Shreck behind. Smith and Dean Cosker ended the day ensuring Glamorgan would have a lead in excess of 200.

Sunrisers' chance to move back into top four

Preview of the match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings in Hyderabad

The Preview by Kanishkaa Balachandran07-May-2013Match factsMay 8, 2013
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)Big PictureIn-form teams are entitled to the odd bad day. On Sunday, Chennai Super Kings, on top with 18 points and two wins away from the playoffs, had one. Nobody would have expected the table leaders to go tumbling for 79, the lowest team score in this IPL. The captain MS Dhoni and coach Stephen Fleming conceded it was good in a way that the meltdown happened now, rather than in the later stages, when qualifications for the playoffs are at stake. Super Kings have relied on their batting depth to get them this far, but the slow pitch in Hyderabad will test them.Sunrisers Hyderabad, like Mumbai Indians, haven’t lost a game at home. They have a chance at making it back to the top four. They are presently at No.5 and a win will knock Royal Challengers Bangalore down a notch. Momentum is on their side, after two consecutive wins.Form guide (most recent first)Chennai Super Kings LWWWW
Sunrisers Hyderabad WWLLWPlayers to watchKaran Sharma, the Sunrisers legspinner, has picked up five wickets from seven games this season. Not sensational numbers, but he has made a bigger impact with his economy-rate of 5.59, which is gold dust in this format. With an action similar to Zimbabwe’s Paul Strang, Sharma has emerged as one of the relatively unknown Indian players to watch out for.S Badrinath has featured in all 12 Super Kings games this season, but has been underutilised, having batted in only six innings. Badrinath has been a regular with the team since the opening IPL, but has been shunted down the order below the allrounders Dwayne Bravo and Chris Morris, unless the team is in trouble. He was promoted to No.4 against Mumbai Indians but was dismissed for a third-ball duck.Stats and trivia S Badrinath has three scores of 34 this season MS Dhoni has hit the most runs off Dale Steyn in the IPL – 76 from 42 balls. It’s the most Steyn has conceded to any batsmanQuotes”Four more games are left and it’s a pretty long tournament to maintain your standards.”
“There have been a number of games in which teams, including ours, have not scored what we felt was a par score on it. I think we have bowled particularly well on it, at times our opponents too bowled well on it. I think it is not as bad as it looks statistically. It is decently good surface.”

A minha vontade é ficar, prorrogar o contrato.

O clube me acolheu e me abraçou.

companheiros e saber o estilo deles.

Sandhu's four puts NSW on top

ScorecardGurinder Sandhu’s four wickets put New South Wales in a strong position against South Australia after day one of the Sheffield Shield match at the SCG.The Redbacks are second on a tightly packed competition table, but struggled for traction on a well-grassed pitch in the face of Sandhu’s bounce and Josh Hazlewood’s economy, his 13 overs surrendering a mere 11 runs for the wickets of Callum Ferguson and Chadd Sayers.Only South Australia captain Johan Botha made a score of note, punching a half-century to keep up his strong showing in the closing games of the season.Left with 23 overs to face on a sticky, overcast day lending itself to swing bowling, the Blues lost David Dawson to the accurate Sayers, but Scott Henry and Daniel Hughes fought out the final hour to ensure their side can enter day two with plenty of confidence.

Baroda take charge against Odisha

Scorecard
After the bowlers had shot out Odisha for 181 on the first day, four of the batsmen hit half-centuries to consolidate on Baroda’s advantage in Vadodara. Baroda are still missing both the Pathan brothers due to injury, but they didn’t let that affect them much as they steadily built up a solid total. Opener Aditya Waghmode made his fifth fifty-plus score in six matches, and added 125 for the second wicket with Abhimanyu Chauhan. After that their stand-in captain Ambati Rayudu and their wicketkeeper Pinal Shah, returning after a month’s absence, put on 102 for the fifth wicket to swell Baroda’s lead. With Odisha in second place on the points table, and Baroda in third, an outright win for Baroda will be a huge boost with the Ranji knockouts only a few rounds away.
Scorecard
Uttar Pradesh’s batsmen built up a big score on the second day against Vidarbha. Arif Alam closed in on his second successive century and Piyush Chawla celebrated his Test call-up with an 85 that included three sixes to push UP past 500 in Nagpur. They might not declare overnight as Alam was still seven short of his hundred, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who was picked for India’s Twenty20 squad for the first time, keeping him company. It wasn’t the quickest of scoring, but UP will hope that the big first-innings total will put pressure on Vidarbha’s batsmen, who have already spent two full days on the field. UP are on top of the table despite having played a game less than their three closest chasers, and the three points from a first-innings lead should keep them in first place.
Scorecard
Haryana bounced back from a dreadful start to their season with a surprise victory over Delhi in the last round, but they looked set to be second-best again this time as Maharashtra comfortably took the first-innings lead in Pune. Sangram Atitkar, who reached 80 twice this season without going on to make a hundred, completed his century this time, and his 177-run stand with Ankit Bawne, who made his third half-century in three innings, put Maharashtra in charge. Maharashtra had lost only three wickets and were already 45 ahead.
