Mortaza backs Ashraful to shine

Mashrafe Mortaza is confident of fulfilling the responsibility he has been given and is focused on improving Bangladesh’s standing in Test cricket

Judhajit Basu23-Jun-2009Mashrafe Mortaza, Bangladesh’s new captain, is confident of fulfilling the responsibility he has been given and is focused on improving his team’s standing in Test cricket during the upcoming tour of the West Indies.”Our performance in Tests has been nothing to write home about and, keeping in mind that we begin with Tests in the West Indies, I want to begin practice in a way that will help us put our best foot forward,” Mortaza told Cricinfo. “I hope the tour will be a great launchpad and that all the players contribute.”The man whom Mortaza expects to play a key role in achieving that objective is Mohammad Ashraful, whom the Bangladesh board relieved from captaincy so that he could concentrate on his batting. “I don’t think there will be any problems working with Ashraful,” Mortaza said. “The kind of player Ashraful is, he will be playing his best game as always.”He will not be playing for me, but for the country. He’s not immature and, being a professional player, he knows very well what is expected from him. I believe he will shine.”Mortaza’s appointment as captain was fast-tracked after Bangladesh’s first-round exit from the World Twenty20 in England, where they lost both group matches against India and Ireland. “We did play well against the big teams, especially India,” Mortaza said. “We may have been lacking a little in stability but I don’t think we played too badly and the criticism has been a little over the top. We hope to sort out these shortcomings and next time we’ll make sure such matches don’t slip from our grasp.”Mortaza was not worried about a possible dip in his own form owing to the pressure of leading and resurrecting the team, having had captaincy experience with Khulna Division and Abahani Limited in domestic cricket. “There’s no need to think about it too much,” he said. “It all depends on how well you can overcome the burden. Captaincy definitely brings pressure but if you can enjoy it, it’s worth it.”His task could become easier with the readmission of former ICL players into the Bangladesh fold. While Ashraful’s team was depleted with the exodus of 13 players to the unofficial league, they could be available for selection during Mortaza’s term after the Bangladesh board offered them amnesty in May.”They haven’t returned to the national fold yet and I wouldn’t take too huge a stride forward, thinking about the future,” he said. “Hopefully they will get permission to play in the Dhaka League and the National Cricket League and, if they perform well, I don’t see why they can’t make it to the Bangladesh team. Once they are back in the squad, they will be like the others, who have come through on merit, and won’t need to be handled separately.”

Is Cristiano Ronaldo a Legitimate Golden Boot Contender?

The signing of Cristiano Ronaldo has sent Manchester United fans into dream land. He’s played three times for them so far, scoring twice on his league debut, and adding another in the Champions League during midweek.

Three goals in three games has shown he still has it, but does he have enough to be the Premier League’s Golden Boot winner this season?

He’s just 11/4 with Betfred to do so, making him the second favourite behind Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku. If he continues to score in the same vain as we’ve seen in his first two games, there will be plenty of people interested in using the best bookie offers to place their wagers on the Portuguese forward.

Can Ronaldo Last the Full Premier League Season?

One of the biggest question marks hanging over Ronaldo is not the quality he has, but whether he can last the full season. He’s going to turn 37 during the season, so if he wins the golden boot, he will become the oldest winner of the award there has ever been in this league.

On top of that, there is also the question mark over how he will handle the Premier League. He played here as a youngster in the past, but hasn’t during his prime years, and now comes back as a 36-year-old to face one of the most physically demanding leagues in the world.

Will Ronaldo be able to deal with the pressure he is under from defenders, and not only that, but will he be able to keep fit, and playing almost every game during the season? He will need to if he is to win the Golden Boot, as there are many players in with a chance, who have proven their ability to handle the toughness of the Premier League.

Despite all of this, there will be opportunities in the Premier League for him, when United play against the weaker teams in the league. His debut against Newcastle was a prime example of a game where he can shine, Newcastle struggled defensively, and there are many other teams who will have the same problems against United’s attacking force. Don’t be surprised to look through the Manchester United news during the season and season them racking up big scores against teams, and if they do, with Ronaldo involved, his chances of winning the Golden Boot grow.

Done it Before, Do it Again?

Pretty much every question surrounding Ronaldo is one he has answered in the past, albeit in weaker leagues that the Premier League. Over the past 15 years, he’s averaged 30 goals a season, which would be enough to win the Golden Boot, and probably, 25 would be enough this season.

With experience on his side, a desire to do well and a long history of scoring goals, it would be unwise to go against Ronaldo in his quest for the Golden Boot this season. It won’t be easier, this is a tough league, but as we’ve seen in the past, the bigger the challenge, the better this all-time great will play.

Rangers: McAvennie sends Goldson warning

Frank McAvennie has offered a brutal assessment of Rangers central defender Connor Goldson…

What’s the talk?

Former Scotland international Frank McAvennie has predicted that Rangers defender Connor Goldson will not be able to join a bigger club if he leaves Ibrox.

McAvennie has sent a warning to the defender and said that Gerrard should be making the point to him, amid reported interest from Premier League side West Ham.

He told Football Insider:

“He must think he deserves a better deal than everyone else. He has played well in a well-drilled defence, they work well together.

“I don’t think any of them are standout players, they just work so hard together, that’s why they were so good. He’s not as good as he thinks he is. I think he’s a cog rather than the star man. What is he demanding?

“Gerrard will be telling him that. If he leaves, he won’t find a bigger club, you know, get real.”

Fans would be buzzing

Steven Gerrard must now have a difficult conversation with Goldson in order to convince him to stay at the club in the long term. He must make a major call and tell the defender, to his face, that Rangers may be the best team he will ever play for, as McAvennie has predicted.

Whether or not Goldson can get a better move is irrelevant at the end of the day, Gerrard simply needs to state his case strong enough for the centre-back to believe it. He should be explaining to him how lucky he is to play, typically, in front of almost 50,000 fans every home game whilst competing for trophies year-in-year-out.

That may not be the case if he heads back down to England to join a team in midtable in the Premier League, for example.

Fans would be buzzing if this tactic managed to convince Goldson to put pen to paper. Back in February, Gerrard told The Scotsman: “Connor has been an absolute mountain for this team, a warrior.

“I can’t describe to you how well he has done for this team, not just in terms of what you have seen on the pitch but also his leadership on the inside of the club and his availability every single day.”

This shows how highly-valued the £27k-per-week beast is at Rangers, on and off the pitch with his leadership. He also played 38 Premiership matches for the Gers as they won the title last season, helping the team to keep an astonishing 26 clean sheets in that time.

Goldson averaged a phenomenal SofaScore rating of 7.39, showing that he was consistently brilliant at centre-back in the Premiership. This highlights how important he has been to Gerrard’s side and why fans would be delighted if he signed a contract extension to stay at Ibrox.

Ex-WHU man Anderson makes Moyes dig

Felipe Anderson has taken a sly dig at West Ham manager David Moyes, saying he has improved a great deal from playing under Maurizio Sarri instead.

The Lowdown: Anderson left Irons

In 2018, the Hammers signed Anderson from Lazio for £36m, a then club-record fee (BBC).

He had his moments at the London Stadium, scoring 12 goals and providing 13 assists in 73 matches in all competitions, but he returned to Lazio in the summer after an unsuccessful loan spell at Porto (Transfermarkt).

The Latest: Anderson makes veiled Moyes dig

Speaking to Football Italia, the Brazil international spoke about his move back to Italy. He said:

“I have improved a great deal already with the coach.

“I am convinced over time the whole team will understand fully what he wants from us. I always wanted to work on my consistency, even within a single game, and I’m getting there. The idea is to be constantly focused and ready from the first minute to the 90th.

“I know that I am capable of making the difference, but I used to struggle with the pressure when I was younger. It’s different now, I am on the right path.

“Everyone knows I feel at home with Lazio. I’ve always expressed my love for Italy and the city of Rome. I never lost contact with my friends here, even after leaving. I feel that I’ve returned a more mature player.”

The Verdict: Didn’t work out

Anderson showed his talent at Lazio during his first spell at the club, scoring eight goals and providing nine assists the season before he moved to the Premier League. However, he was unable to replicate that form on a regular basis at West Ham.

With two goals and two assists in seven Serie A matches this term, he appears to be enjoying life back in Italy. Likewise, the Hammers are in good form, qualifying for the Europa League last term via the Premier League. It seems both parties are better off away from each other than together.

In other news, West Ham fans were far from happy with this Moyes call against Brentford.

Phillips surprised by David Moyes plan

Speaking to Football Insider, Sky Sports pundit Kevin Phillips has been left surprised by  David Moyes’ plan for West Ham involving Lukasz Fabianski and summer signing Alphonse Areola.

The Lowdown: Moyes plotting Fabianski axe…

Already it appears that the manager has a plot underway to axe one of his ‘untouchable’ West Ham mainstays in the Polish goalkeeper.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-developments-2/” title=”West Ham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, according to Football Insider, the Scotsman is planning to replace his current number one with Areola in the starting XI over the coming weeks.

It is said that Moyes wants to phase the Frenchman in gradually as he looks to make Areola his new goalkeeping first choice.

The Latest: Phillips left surprised…

Speaking to Football Insider in reaction to this development, Phillips has been left surprised by Moyes’ plan but insists that Fabianski is a professional and will help Areola regardless, despite him possibly feeling a little bit ‘aggrieved’.

“He’s [Areola] going to be the number one eventually,” the former Sunderland striker explained.

“That’s why he was brought in. He can learn from Fabianski. It won’t be ideal and I’m sure he will feel aggrieved.

“But he’s a pro and he will help Areola settle into the club. Fabianski has that experience so it does surprise me slightly.

“I’ll never go against David Moyes considering what he’s done but that’s a major change.

“If he does make Areola number one he will have a player behind him pushing and that’s always a good thing.”

The Verdict: Good move by Moyes?

Currently on loan from Paris-Saint Germain, Areola enjoyed a consistent spell in the Premier League with Fulham last season despite their relegation, keeping nine clean sheets in 36 starts.

Scott Parker even lauded the player as ‘exceptional’ and we believe he could be the ideal long-term replacement for Fabianski as the 36-year-old Poland international reaches his twilight phase.

Wolves fans on Agbonlahor prediction

Some Wolves fans have been left fuming at Gabby Agbonlahor after his prediction involving them emerged on talkSPORT.

Speaking on talkSPORT’s Sunday show, the former Aston Villa and England international striker has now predicted that the Midlands club will be in a relegation battle this season after their 2-0 home loss at the hands of Brentford in the Premier League at Saturday lunchtime.

As Agbonlahor put it, the performance was ‘shocking’, but some members of the Molineux faithful believe that he is being too reactionary as it is still very early on in the campaign.

There are also his past connections with AVFC to contend with as well, and so it is not a surprise at all to see so many WWFC supporters disagree with his opinion despite the poor result and disappointing performance.

Watson health kick works wonders

Shane Watson is unique for an Australian cricketer: he doesn’t drink or lift weights. Since injuring his hamstring for the umpteenth time during the World Twenty20 last year he has restructured his training and cut out alcohol in an effort to get the most out of his body.So far it is working and he has contributed with bat and ball in the opening two Tests, which took his career tally to five games. “I’m off drinking while I’m playing and training to give myself every chance I possibly can to be right throughout this big workload,” Watson said. “It’s important to look after the body.”Only at the end of the Indian Premier League, when his Rajasthan Royals team won the competition, did Watson break his ban and have a couple of glasses of champagne. “I’ve saved money and a few headaches as well,” he said, smiling. He still joins the celebrations but his new tipple is diet Pepsi or soda water.Until the change in regime he was hurt a couple of times a season, but with the new approach he was able to string enough state and one-day international games together to prove to Australia’s national selectors he was the man to replace Andrew Symonds. He picked up 3 for 45 and scored 41 in the first Test in Bangalore and added a fine 78 in the first innings in Mohali.”To me it’s not a sacrifice,” he said. “The things I’ve been able to achieve over the past six months are not things I thought I could do 13 months ago.”He has been working with Brisbane health expert Victor Popov and now does pilates, running, cycling and swimming instead of lifting weights. His old programme had him training like a rugby league player.”I haven’t touched a weight for 13 months,” he said. “The things I’ve been doing are pilates, hamstring strength, calf strength, which is just body weight stuff. I don’t know the inside of a gym. Bowling is the thing I need to do, running and bowling. I feel my body shape is changing, it’s a lot lighter, but I feel I haven’t lost strength.”The old aches don’t return so frequently, and if he notices any changes he can adjust quickly to limit the pain. “My inner core strength wasn’t great and my pelvis was moving around quite a bit,” he said. “When it’s out of line, my hamstring gets tighter and so do my glutes.”Also, because of the stress fractures early in my career, I’ve had nerve issues through my back into hamstrings and lower legs because of the healing I’ve had since I was a young kid. I have to make sure my nerves are not irritated, which is another piece of the puzzle.”Other things are maintenance every day, making sure I’m warm, and swimming. It’s quite a big puzzle to make sure everything is in alignment, but I love doing it. I’ve learned so much about my body. It’s also exciting to know where I’m at. If something is slightly out I understand how to get it fixed or under control.”

Is this Celtic’s Edouard successor?

This is the summer of change at Celtic Football Club. However, whether their mass upheaval on the field and behind the scenes will be enough to snatch the title back from their fierce rivals remains to be seen.

The Hoops have got rid of some major names behind the scenes and they now have a pairing of Dominic McKay and Ange Postecoglou at the helm.

That being said, life for the Australian and former Scottish rugby director hasn’t got off to the greatest of starts.

Celtic have been dumped out of Europe’s premier competition at the first hurdle and lost their opening Premiership game to newly promoted Hearts.

Those matches have some common themes; defensive mistakes and a lack of goals for Odsonne Edouard. The Frenchman has failed to find the net this season and has attracted criticism as a result.

Edouard cannot be accused of not trying but he does look a shadow of the man who so consistently has reached over 20 goals a season since signing for the Bhoys.

His chance at reuniting with Brendan Rodgers has come and gone after Leicester pulled the plug on a move but Brighton remain interested in his services.

If he leaves then Celtic will have their backs against the wall. Leigh Griffiths has signed a new contract and the J-League’s top scorer – Kyogo Furuhashi – is now a Hoop.

There will be a bedding-in period for the Japan international, however, so he cannot be tasked with succeeding Edouard immediately.

Instead, they should look towards Kevin Nisbet, a man who’s started this campaign in the same vein he ended the last one; scoring goals.

The striker was included among the Scotland squad for Euro 2020 and has witnessed a rapid rise in recent years. His form has been fantastic and he’s been regularly linked with Celtic as a result.

A bigger move will be forthcoming in the not too distant future but Postecoglou must ensure his side lead the negotiations.

Dubbed a “wonderful” player by Frank McAvennie, the Hibs forward has found the net on 19 occasions in 48 matches, proving he has what it takes at Premiership level.

Impressively, he looks as though he can take his game to the next level. Rising high to reach a James Forrest cross in a pre-Euro 2020 friendly, he scored against the Netherlands during an eye-catching 2-2 draw.

He is clinical in the air and has immense composure in front of goal. He may not have the grace and poise of Edouard but he is still ruthless.

Celtic have looked to other nations to provide competition to their main striker in recent years – namely Albian Ajeti and Patryk Klimala – but their lack of goals dictate that they have been failures.

Consequently, the newly formed recruitment team should look closer to home and bring Nisbet to Paradise.

If Edouard leaves, he could make or break their Premiership title bid. He scores goals and knows the top-flight inside out.
