SAFC: Black Cats beast back in training

A Sunderland training ground development has emerged, regarding versatile gem Luke O’Nien…

What’s the latest?

The Chronicle Live have reported that the midfielder is back out on the field on Wednesday as he looks to complete his comeback from an injury.

O’Nien has been out of action since November due to a shoulder problem and he is now easing his way back to full fitness.

Buzzing

Sunderland fans will be buzzing with this news as the return of O’Nien could be a big boost to manager Lee Johnson for the second half of the season.

The Black Cats are working hard to battle their way out of League One and having as many of their players fit and available as possible could help them to achieve their goal. The midfielder is a proven performer at this level as he has previously shown that he can consistently deliver quality displays in a number of positions, which is why this update could delight fans and Johnson.

Wigan and Wycombe are the two teams above Sunderland in the table as it stands, with the latter sitting top and one point above them and the former having a whopping four games in-hand but currently level on points. This shows how tight it is at the top of the table and why every little advantage the Black Cats can accrue could be crucial in the coming months.

Only Ross Stewart and Tom Flanagan have averaged higher SofaScore ratings than O’Nien in League One this season and this illustrates his importance to the team as he has been one of their top performers this term. He has averaged a score of 7.11 across 16 appearances, playing in a plethora of roles throughout the XI – highlighting the versatility he brings as he can play at centre-back, right-back, right midfield, central midfield and in a holding position.

The ex-Wycombe man has won an impressive 65% of his duels and made 3.3 tackles and interceptions per game in the third tier. Fans will surely be delighted to see his tough-tackling midfield performances again in the coming weeks and this is why they will be buzzing with the news that he is back in training and working to shake off his shoulder injury.

AND in other news, Johnson must secure SAFC deal for £3.1k-p/w gem who has “all the raw tools to succeed”…

Aston Villa receive triple boost pre-Wolves

Aston Villa trio Lucas Digne, Marvelous Nakamba and Kortney Hause will all return to training ahead of the clash with Wolves next weekend.

The lowdown

Villa’s season run-in begins with the short trip to Molineux on Saturday afternoon following the international break.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/aston-villa-latest-developments/” title=”Aston Villa latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Digne missed the 1-0 defeat against Arsenal last time out after sustaining a hamstring injury just 10 minutes into the clash with West Ham United earlier this month.

Hause has been absent for the last three Premier League three matches with an abdominal problem, while Nakamba’s return has been long-awaited. The Zimbabwean underwent knee surgery in December, sidelining him for 14 top-flight games.

The latest

Birmingham Mail’s Ashley Preece and Leigh Curtis reported that Digne has already returned to full training with his national team France. Meanwhile, Hause will ‘link back up with the group at Bodymoor Heath’ at the beginning of the week.

However, Gerrard is expected to exercise caution with Nakamba as he resumes ‘full training’. The midfielder is unlikely to play against Wolves and could instead feature for the under-23s against Stoke City on Friday night as he aims to build up his fitness.

The verdict

The Wolves game may come too soon for Nakamba, while you’d imagine that Hause will be confined to the bench, given that he has only started four league matches this season.

However, Digne’s return is a significant boost for Gerrard. The 28-year-old leads the squad for accurate crosses per 90 minutes (1.3) and is also joint-second for chances created with 1.4 (level with Emiliano Buendia and John McGinn, behind Philippe Coutinho on 1.5).

Indeed, Gerrard believes that the £25m January signing fits his system to a tee, which is “vital” for the manager. The Frenchman could be a player who makes the difference against Villa’s Midlands rivals, given his prowess for creating chances, and having him back in training is very good news indeed.

In other news, the sale of this star could fund Villa’s summer spending plans.

Sunderland fans slam Gooch vs Accrington

Many Sunderland fans were critical of the performance of Lynden Gooch in their 1-1 draw at Accrington Stanley in League One on Saturday afternoon.

It was a frustrating game for the Wearsiders, who had to settle for a point in the end despite taking the lead through Aiden O’Brien and the hosts having Ross Sykes sent off for a second yellow card.

Gooch would not have been too pleased with his own individual performance, as he lost out on three of his four duels while also failing to record a single successful dribble, along with giving the ball away 19 times (SofaScore).

He was also the only Black Cats player to have played the full 90 minutes and record fewer touches than goalkeeper Ron-Thorben Hoffmann, highlighting his lack of impact on the match.

Journalist makes Man United manager claim

Mauricio Pochettino is the front-runner to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Manchester United manager, according to journalist Peter O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: United on the search for new manager

Solskjaer’s reign as United manager came to an end on Sunday morning following the 4-1 defeat away to Watford the previous day. The Norwegian had reached the point of no return after a run of just one win in seven Premier League matches, with a change being essential.

United are now on the lookout for a new manager and a number of candidates are believed to be in the race to take charge at Old Trafford.

[freshpress-poll id=“378953″]

The Latest: Journalist makes Pochettino managerial claim

One of those is reportedly Pochettino, who is currently manager of Paris Saint-Germain but whose family remains in England.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, O’Rourke talked up the chances of the Argentine taking over at United, saying it looks the most likely outcome:

“All signs seem to point towards Pochettino being their top target right now. He’s been a long-term target for the United hierarchy in the past.”

The Verdict: Right man for the job?

The main thing working against Pochettino is his lack of silverware, with the 49-year-old only winning a French Cup and French Super Cup during his time as a manager. In five years at Tottenham, he failed to win any trophies, but he also turned Spurs into a formidable side who reached the 2019 Champions League final.

Pochettino plays an attacking brand of football, which is sure to appeal at United – he has labelled Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel a ‘defensive’ coach – and he could perhaps get far more out of a hugely talented squad than Solskjaer, as was the case with players such as Dele Alli, Son Heung-min and Harry Kane.

The pressure would clearly be on Pochettino to win trophies at Old Trafford, but he is still at an age where he is learning as a manager and he could be the man to bring back more successful times to the red half of Manchester.

Hampshire target Warne for Twenty20

Hampshire are in discussions to sign Shane Warne, their former captain, for next season’s Twenty20 Cup. Warne led Hampshire from 2004 to 2007 and Rod Bransgrove, the chairman, confirmed that the club had made an approach.”Warne is the biggest name we’ve ever had at the club and, yes, we have spoken to him,” he told the . “You can never rule out getting Warne back to Hampshire, although he’s very busy and I wonder whether he’d get out of bed for the money we can offer.”Since retiring from international cricket in 2007, Warne has captained Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, winning the inaugural event with a young and relatively unknown side. He is also involved in a host of other activities, starring in the TV commentary box in this year’s Ashes, as well as playing international poker tournaments. In an effort to raise the profile of England’s Twenty20 Cup competition, counties will be able to include four overseas players in their squads next season but only two will be allowed in each game. Middlesex signed Adam Gilchrist earlier in the week and are hoping to sign Sachin Tendulkar.Hampshire, have already secured Ajantha Mendis, the Sri Lanka spinner, creating the prospect of an exciting pairing with Warne, but Bransgrove said Hampshire have other options.”Hampshire have also had talks with other big-name players that are reasonably well advanced. I’ve been talking about the potential of Twenty20 for some time and getting these superstars in is what it’s all about.”

Rangers: Barisic has been a standout

Rangers are enjoying a sublime season in the Premiership this term as they sit top of the table with 42 points after 17 games.

They have won 13 of their 17 matches, drawing three and losing just once. In that time, they have scored 38 goals and conceded just 18 times, with Steven Gerrard starting the campaign in charge before Giovanni van Bronckhorst came in last month.

Forget Tavernier

Captain James Tavernier may get the bulk of the plaudits with his outstanding contributions in the final third this season, but his fellow full-back Borna Barisic has also been a standout for the Gers.

Tavernier tops the Rangers squad with an average SofaScore rating of 7.86, whilst Barisic is second in terms of outfield players with a score of 7.26. The former has three goals and ten assists – from 1.8 key passes per game – in 15 Premiership appearances and averages a whopping 97 touches per match.

This shows how the ex-Newcastle man is the main outlet for the Gers in possession as he takes almost 100 touches per game despite playing at right-back.

Barisic, meanwhile, averages 76.6 touches per game and has also averaged 1.8 key passes – racking up two assists. This suggests that he has been more effective in his creation of chances in relation to the number of touches he has compared to Tavernier.

Former Gers player Alex Rae once lauded the full-back’s ‘terrific’ ability on the ball, saying: “He performs at good level week-in, week-out and has terrific quality in the final third of the park.”

Mark Wilson added: “He’s the best left-back in the country. He’s improved his defending and supplies assists and is a threat at set pieces.”

Tavernier averages 2.3 tackles and interceptions and 1.6 clearances per game, whilst Barisic averages 2.3 and 3.0 in the same categories. The Croatian has also won a higher percentage (62%) of his duels – winning 51 in total –  in comparison to the right-back (52%) in the Premiership. This shows that the left-sided defender has been stronger in his defending this season, to go along with his efficient chance creation.

Therefore, Barisic has been a standout for Rangers and is deserving of immense credit for his performances in the top-flight, potentially more so than Tavernier based on the pair’s underlying statistics.

However, both have been outstanding and are key to how van Bronckhorst’s team operates with their quality from the full-back positions.

Aston Villa are admirers of Thomas Frank

Aston Villa are thought to be admirers of Brentford manager Thomas Frank, according to The Athletic’s Gregg Evans.

The Lowdown: Frank’s time at Brentford…

The Dane was actually Dean Smith’s assistant at the west London club and took over as their manager when the latter joined Villa back in 2018. Since then, he has taken charge of 161 games, winning 79 of those and taking the Bees into the Premier League.

Brentford have impressed in their first Premier League campaign, beating Arsenal and West Ham and drawing with Liverpool, whose manager Jurgen Klopp labelled Frank ‘incredible’ and ‘entertaining’.

Villa are now on the hunt for a new manager after sacking Smith, and it seems as if they may look to take another Brentford manager three years on after securing the 50-year-old.

The Latest: Villa are admirers of Frank

Evans shared a story on The Athletic regarding Smith’s sacking and the contenders to replace him.

Well-known targets such as Steven Gerrard, Ralph Hasenhuttl and Kasper Hjulmand were mentioned, but the journalist added that Villa are admirers of Frank.

Evans also claimed that NSWE are prepared to pay compensation to get the manager they want, which would not preclude any candidates who are currently in a job.

The Verdict: Lange to be key?

Sporting director Johan Lange will reportedly play a key role in bringing in a new head coach, so a move for fellow countryman Frank could be a realistic one. The pair know each other well after sharing an office when coaching at Lyngby, and the Brentford boss has impressed in his first season as a manager in the English top flight.

Lightning may well end up striking twice when it comes to Brentford bosses leaving for Villa, so the links to the 48-year-old may be worth keeping a close eye on during the international break.

In other news: Five-honour boss also in NSWE’s Villa’s thoughts; he’s ‘one of the best’.

CPFC: Hughes is McArthur’s natural heir

Crystal Palace secured a famous victory against Manchester City over the weekend to put some daylight between themselves and the bottom three.

The result ended a run of four consecutive draws for Patrick Vieira’s charges and cemented the progress that’s been made during the Frenchman’s short reign.

In just a few months, Vieira has transformed the playing squad and style of play in south London significantly, and now the results are beginning to match their performances on the pitch.

However, there is still a lot of work to be done in order to ensure Palace’s long-term success.

Several experienced campaigners such as Vicente Guaita, Joel Ward and 34-year-old James McArthur are still being heavily relied upon by Palace, but the natural heir to their ageing Scottish midfielder could already be at the club.

Over the summer, Will Hughes was one of many new faces to arrive at the capital club, but unlike many of the latest acquisitions, he’s yet to make his mark for Vieira’s charges.

In fact, the combative 26-year-old hasn’t played a single minute for Palace, leading to questions being asked over his current and future role at the club by supporters.

After being asked for his thoughts on Hughes’ situation by a fan on Twitter, The Athletic’s Palace reporter Matt Woosnam offered his thoughts.

“Thoughts on the Will Hughes situation? @MattWoosie,” wrote @rileyeagles, before another supporter added: “Do you think he’s the replacement for Jimmy Mac, but he’s currently undroppable?”

Woosnam then replied to the two fans, saying: “Basically this. He’s a long-term McArthur replacement. Will write about him at some point.”

And it’s easy to understand why Vieira currently feels McArthur is undroppable from his starting XI at this moment in time.

As per WhoScored, the former Wigan Athletic ace has averaged 2.2 tackles per league game this term, 1.1 interceptions and 1.7 defensive dribbles, placing him in the top-four for each metric when compared to his teammates.

Nevertheless, Hughes is also capable of adding some steal to the middle of the park when called upon and earned some staunch praise from former teammate Adrian Mariappa after impressing at Vicarage Road.

“He’s an outstanding player. To see the quality he’s got, he has so much flair and is a terrific player,” said Mariappa.

During Hughes’ last full season in the Premier League during 2019/20, the former England U21 international put up some impressive figures, averaging 2.5 tackles per game, 1.2 interceptions and 1.4 defensive dribbles, indicating he has the quality to continue McArthur’s good work.

Therefore, Vieira must unleash the £6.3m-rated beast sooner rather than later or risk losing him before he’s had a chance to showcase his credentials in a Palace shirt.
