Newcastle fans react to Jetro Willems picking up an injury against Chelsea

Newcastle have not had the best start to the new year both on and off the field but the win against Chelsea could signal a turnaround in their fortunes.

There have been no additions in the transfer window so far but the Magpies picked up a very impressive win at home against the Blues, though the victory did have a downside to it.

Jetro Willems, who has impressed many with his performances since joining on loan earlier in the summer, was forced off with injury inside the opening 15 minutes.

A football legend: Can you get over 80% on this Gazza quiz? Find out now…

It looked like a bad one, too, with the wing-back receiving treatment for quite a lengthy period on his knee, raising fan concern that the Dutchman may have damaged himself seriously.

For Steve Bruce, it is the latest in a long line of frustrating injuries that his squad has picked up, with the likes of Dwight Gayle and Javier Manquillo unavailable for the visit of Chelsea.

Matt Ritchie made a long-awaited comeback from a fitness problem and he replaced Willems, looking accomplished in doing so as he helped his side keep a clean sheet against a team that has scored 39 goals in 23 league games this term.

However, if Willems is out long-term then Bruce and Mike Ashley have some thinking to do with regard to signing a replacement, with one fan stressing the need for reinforcements.

Other supporters share their sentiment in regards to how bad the news could be, with many fearing the worst and expecting the 25-year-old to never play for the club again, as his loan hasn’t been made permanent by the club.

Newcastle have set their rights on one possible new arrival this month and he could provide the squad with a much-needed boost amid the downturn in results recently.

Daniel Levy simply must secure vital Christian Eriksen agreement ASAP

According to a recent report from The Daily Mail, Christian Eriksen’s future at Tottenham remains somewhat uncertain. The Denmark international made the move to the North London club back in 2013 after impressing at Dutch heavyweights Ajax, with the 26-year-old going on to become a vital member of Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs squad in the last few years.

Yet reports suggest that, with his contract up in the summer of 2020, chairman Daniel Levy and the club’s hierarchy are willing to let his deal run down into the final 12 months, but having been able to tie the likes of Pochettino, Harry Kane, and Dele Alli down to new deals recently, alongside the reported interest in Eriksen from Real Madrid, Levy must act fast by securing Eriksen’s future as soon as possible.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, while Tottenham became the first Premier League team since the transfer window began to fail to sign a player during the most recent summer market, the club did work extremely hard to retain some of their most prized assets, with messrs Pochettino, Kane, and Alli all penning new contracts with the North London club.

Arguably, those agreements were just as important as signings in keeping the squad and indeed the manager together as they seek to continue building towards a Premier League title push, with their position of third place and six points behind leaders Liverpool indicative of the outstanding work Pochettino and his squad have done in recent years.

And one man who has been pivotal to Tottenham’s recent rise to become one of the top teams in the country is Danish star Eriksen, who very much makes Spurs tick in the middle of the park such is his remarkable quality on the ball.

The 26-year-old has been an absolute revelation at the North London outfit following his move from Ajax back in 2013, with the attacker bagging 62 goals and laying on 78 assists in only 251 appearances for Spurs, equating to a direct contribution every 144 minutes of action.

That is a remarkable return to underline just how influential and thus integral the midfielder is to this Tottenham side – ultimately, when Eriksen is at his best, Spurs are extremely dangerous and consistently carry an attacking threat in the final third of the pitch.

Arguably, a lot of what good Spurs do in the final third is instigated by the Denmark international, whose departure would leave a gaping hole in Pochettino’s attacking ranks, and not one that would be easy to fill – losing him is surely unthinkable for Tottenham fans.

And that is why, having got some great business done during the summer in extending the contracts of Pochettino, Kane, and Alli, to name but a few, Levy must do the same again by giving Eriksen what he wants to stay at Tottenham.

Real Madrid are currently fifth and a staggering ten points behind La Liga leaders Barcelona after just 18 games of the season – that simply isn’t good enough for one of the biggest clubs in world football, who will surely seek to address that by spending big come the summer, with Eriksen one man likely to be of interest.

And while it may be tricky for Spurs to keep hold of the Danish ace regardless of whether he pens a new deal, chairman Levy would have much greater power in negotiations were he and his team to strike a pivotal agreement with the 26-year-old as soon as possible.

Celtic fans are spot on: Rodgers must try and lure Patrick Roberts back to Parkhead

Celtic supporters have been pretty upbeat in recent times after seeing their side record an emphatic victory heading into the second international break of the season.

Brendan Rodgers’ men went into their encounter with St Johnstone in the Scottish Premiership at the weekend off the back of losing 3-1 to Red Bull Salzburg in the Europa League a few days earlier, and thus seeking a response at McDiarmid Park on Sunday. And the Bhoys produced arguably their best performance of the season in putting six past Tommy Wright’s side, four of which coming from James Forrest alongside strikes from Odsonne Edouard and Callum McGregor to seal a comprehensive victory for the defending champions.

Thus, there have been many thrilled Celtic fans up and down the country in recent times, several of whom have been taking to Twitter in recent times to comment upon Patrick Roberts’ current loan spell at Spanish side Girona, which isn’t really going to plan for the attacker.

As such, many of those supporters are calling for their side to try and re-sign the 21-year-old come the New Year, and they are absolutely right to do so as luring the Englishman back to Parkhead, given his efforts at the club in the past, could prove to be a January masterstroke.

The former England Under-20 international is currently on the books at Premier League champions Manchester City following his move there from Fulham back in 2015, but such is the embarrassment of riches available to Citizens boss Pep Guardiola, Roberts has only mustered three senior appearances for the club in the last three years.

In fact, he has enjoyed two-and-a-half years on loan at Celtic as he sought the regular football he was never likely to get at the Etihad Stadium, in which time he certainly became a fan favourite given his exploits for the Bhoys.

Roberts bagged six goals in just 11 league games in his first spell in the second half of the 2015/16 season before taking it up another level the campaign after in netting 11 goals and laying on 19 assists for Rodgers’ side, thus helping them to the clean sweep of domestic honours.

Yes, injuries seriously thwarted his time at the club in the 2017/18 campaign, restricting him to only 18 appearances in all competitions, but there is little doubting that Roberts proved his worth for much of his time north of the border, and as such could be exactly what the Bhoys need heading into the second half of the season.

Sunday aside, it has been something of a struggle for Rodgers’ team this season with a number of lacklustre performances, yet bringing someone energetic and dynamic like Roberts to Celtic Park could help inject that spark that has been often missing from the champions this season.

And with the 21-year-old only mustering five La Liga appearances for Girona this term, none of which having been starts, the lure of a return to Celtic, and the likelihood of more regular football than he is currently getting in Spain, may be of interest to the Englishman.

Thus, those Celtic fans calling for Roberts’ return in January are absolutely right, as were he to live up to the expectations of his previous spell at the club, Rodgers could pull off a January masterstroke in bringing him back to Parkhead.

Newcastle should target Danny Ings instead of Salomon Rondon

With Aleksandar Mitrovic seemingly destined to depart Newcastle United for a fee in the region of £20 million, Rafa Benitez will have some funds to put towards the signing of a new centre-forward this summer.

The identity of the Magpies’ ideal centre-forward target appears to be that of Solomon Rondon – a player who was recently relegated to the Championship with West Bromwich Albion. With a rumoured relegation release clause of £16.5 million written into his contract, it’s easy to see why Newcastle are expressing an interest.

But a move for Rondon would represent a sideways step at best for Newcastle as the Venezuelan cannot offer much more than what Dwight Gayle currently provides at the spearhead of the attack.

With that in mind, Newcastle should turn their attention towards a player with a ruthless streak in the penalty area who is reportedly available for a similar price to Rondon, namely Danny Ings.

According to a recent report from The Liverpool Echo, Ings wants to leave Liverpool this summer in search of regular first-team opportunities following a nightmare injury-plagued three seasons for the former Burnley talisman.

The same report claims that Liverpool will demand £20 million for Ings, with Southampton, Leicester and Crystal Palace joining Newcastle in the race for his signature.

Although Ings has been sidelined for the majority of the past three years, the form he demonstrated at Burnley when he broke onto the scene in the Premier League is enough to suggest that he could become a resounding success on Tyneside.

The 26-year-old was never a player who relied on blistering pace to thrive in the final-third, as his intelligent positioning sense and composure in the penalty area enabled him to bag 11 goals from 35 appearances with the Clarets before he swapped Turf Moor for Anfield in 2015.

Therefore, the torrid injury problems he has suffered should not prevent him from rediscovering his goal-scoring touch next season now that he is back to full-fitness.

Both Benitez and the Newcastle supporters would need to be patient with Ings next season during an inevitable acclimatisation period after such a long period of time away from regular first-team football, but if they are willing to invest their trust in his ability there’s no doubt he would be a far better option than Rondon this summer.

Man United fans believe they can win the title after Swansea win

Manchester United blitzed Swansea City 4-0 on Saturday, following up last week’s duplicate scoreline against West Ham United.

Two games in, eight goals scored and zero conceded. Red Devils supporters can’t ask for more right now with Jose Mourinho’s men looking in the imperious form that has made the club such a force in the English Premier League over the last 25 years.

Eric Bailly, Romelu Lukaku, Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial were all on the score sheet with the Swans powerless to resist a good old-fashioned thrashing.

Avoiding any of their direct top four contenders until October, they might see their good run go on for a while yet too and the results so far have left fans dreaming of title glory once again.

There’s a long way to go of course but if they can keep racking up the goals and victories for another month or so, their positivity, confidence and momentum could be hard to stop.

Supporters took to Twitter to share their thoughts on United’s title credentials…

Merson expects Man United to ease past Blackburn

Manchester United may not have been able to rise above sixth spot in the Premier League but they are enjoying the longest unbeaten run out of any side in the top-five European leagues and secured a comfortable victory against St Etienne in the Europa League last night.

The defending FA Cup champions tackle struggling Championship side Blackburn and will be expected to seal their place in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup but, despite their issues, Blackburn should not be taken lightly and the risk of an upset will be on Jose Mourinho’s mind.

Despite that, Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson believes the Red Devils will continue their fine run in all competitions with a comfortable win. Making his predictions for the fifth-round, the former Arsenal defender said:

“I can’t see this being too difficult for Manchester United. One thing Jose Mourinho always does is take the cups seriously. They are already in the EFL Cup Final and I just don’t see them slipping up here. Blackburn are second bottom of the Championship and their priority has to be staying in that division this season.”

Going strong in the Europa League and having a favourable draw in the FA Cup, as well as sealing their place in the League Cup final against Southampton, many will feel the Red Devils have a chance of securing a treble.

Could this forgotten star give Arsenal the title race x-factor?

League run-ins can often be decided by small margins, a moment, a decision, a slice of good luck. This season more than ever, with so many teams in with a chance of the title, any factor that can give a side the edge during the crucial last few weeks and months of the campaign will be most welcome.

And in a returning player, Arsenal may have just that edge. Having been out for nine months with a knee injury, Danny Welbeck got a run out with Arsenal’s under-21s last week as he continues his long road to recovery and first-team action.

He may not have the overall game-changing ability of Alexis Sanchez or the defence-splitting eye for a pass of Mesut Ozil, but the 25-year Mancunian’s return to fitness may have come at the perfect time for Arsene Wenger, and could tip the balance in the Gunners’ favour as they head towards ‘squeaky bum-time’.

His direct running, pace and industry on the flanks will be particularly useful for a side all too often reliant on Sanchez providing those attributes. Seemingly flogged to death by Wenger at times, the Chilean has yet to return to top-form following his own comeback from injury last month.

If Welbeck can return to a good level of fitness over the next few weeks, he will provide Wenger with an extra option in attack and a viable alternative to Sanchez should the dreaded injury bug at Arsenal strike again or a tight game need changing.

Clearly not as skilful as his South American counterpart, Welbeck nonetheless has the ability to stretch defences, his pace best utilised in getting behind the opposition back-line as he cuts in from the left, a la Thierry Henry in past seasons.

Neither Theo Walcott nor Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain offer consistent performances from a similar position, and the former Manchester United youth product can provide extra competition to his fellow countrymen – the three of them possessing similar approaches.

But Welbeck arguably has the edge here, combining the strength and work-rate of Oxlade-Chamberlain with the increased goal-threat of Walcott. Despite his recent goal against Bournemouth, ‘The Ox’ is far from being a natural goalscorer and had gone a season’s worth of games without finding the net before his strike against the Cherries.

Walcott, too, who despite improving in his general forward play and having on occasion been deployed in his favoured position up-front, has still only scored three league goals this season. He never quite seems to fulfil his promise or potential when it comes to the crunch.

Now Welbeck is hardly what you would call a prolific scorer, but he has showed, in his time with both Man United and England, that he has a natural goalscoringing instinct. Given a good run in the team, and the right opportunities, Welbeck is certainly capable of achieving a goals-to-game ratio of one in three, a welcome return from a player not assigned the main striking role and one that can help back up an inconsistent Olivier Giroud.

Additionally, the youngster from Longsight, Manchester is surprisingly good in the air, a welcome addition to a generally diminutive Arsenal side. Other than Giroud and perhaps the centre-backs at set-pieces, headed goals are few and far between at the Emirates and Welbeck can definitely help out in this regard. He’s no stranger to the big occasion either, performing well in both Champions League games for Manchester Utd and Internationals for England.

So whilst Welbeck’s return is far from the stellar-signing in the January transfer window that many Arsenal fans may have hoped for, there are enough positives to view it as a significant factor when it comes to the fine margins of a title run-in. Adding his pace, goals and experience to the Arsenal side at this stage of the season could prove crucial down the line.

Players returning from injury are always a welcome sight for mangers, and an extra option on the flanks/in attack for Wenger may also mean he no longer has to consider Aaron Ramsey in a wide position – his ability to control a game from a central position far more beneficial to the Gunners than being stuck out on the right.

Welbeck’s return may come a touch too late to help Arsenal in the Champions League, but then again you’d probably need a lot more help to try and defeat Barcelona!

Far more crucial for a side seeking a first league title in 12 years is his return at a time that could just tip the scales in the north Londoners’ favour and see the Premier League trophy winging its way to the Emirates come May.

Ex-Wrexham star reveals what it would take for Paul Mullin to leave Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney behind

A “top Championship club” would have to come in for Paul Mullin in order for the Wrexham star to consider a transfer elsewhere, says Brett Ormerod.

Prolific presence in the lower leaguesFeeling settled in North WalesBecome a star on and off the pitchWHAT HAPPENED?

The 29-year-old striker has established a reputation as one of the most potent frontmen in the lower leagues – with 47 goals recorded across all competitions last season as the Red Dragons won the National League title in record-breaking style. Mullin’s exploits have attracted plenty of attention – with the ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary series aiding that cause – but he is tied to a contract through to 2026 and feels settled in North Wales, close to his Merseyside roots.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT ORMEROD SAID ABOUT MULLIN

With that in mind, former Wrexham striker Ormerod has told when asked if Mullin could attract interest from higher up the footballing food chain in January: “Maybe so, yeah. Everyone has an opinion of you as a player and for me, the question is about which Championship club would come in for him. If Wrexham get promoted this season, they'll obviously build a squad to make a push for the Championship themselves and if you're somewhere playing football, you're on good money, happy and settled – there's so much to consider. Paul Mullin is playing football and he's happy. I think it'd have to be a top Championship club to get him away from Wrexham. If Wrexham get promoted this year, Paul Mullin should be thinking 'why should I go anywhere else?'. This club is going places, it's got everything. It's got great media coverage, he gets to meet Will Ferrell, which I'm jealous of because he's one of my favourite actors of all time. It must be amazing to be in and around Wrexham right now, however, it does come with its own pressures I suppose.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

While rubbing shoulders with Hollywood superstars – as Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney call the shots at SToK Racecourse – Mullin has also released his own book, ‘My Wrexham Story’. Ormerod added on making the most of new-found fame: “Fair play to Paul Mullin. A football career is short and people get caught up looking at the A-listers. Football is like every other sport, the elite get paid a substantial amount of money and everyone else is trying to make a living out of it. Football is a funny old game, because you can have a great career in the lower leagues on paper earning modest money but retire at 35 having to enter the real world with no real-world experience, a mortgage, two kids and you've got to go and find your way in life. On the flip side, you can be a top prospect at Man City earning big money, not be playing by the age of 24/25 and still be a millionaire. You have to say fair play to Paul Mullin because you've got to make as much money as you can, while you can.”

GettyWHAT NEXT FOR MULLIN & WREXHAM?

Mullin has hit a further nine goals for Wrexham this season, taking him to 88 in total through 112 appearances, and he has Phil Parkinson’s side sat among the League Two frontrunners – with the ambitious Welsh outfit setting their sights on reaching the Premier League at some stage.

Ricardo Pepi's war of words with Augsburg shows he's backing himself for another big transfer this summer

The USMNT striker could make a big move this summer after a very public falling out with Bundesliga side Augsburg.

Ricardo Pepi looks set to bet on himself this summer.

It wouldn't be the first time he's done that, looking back. It was just last year that the young forward wagered that he was ready for a leap to the Bundesliga and a move to one of the division's worst teams – one desperate for a new star.

Both he, and Augsburg, lost that bet.

It was, in a word, catastrophic. Pepi never got going in Germany, effectively costing himself a World Cup spot, and Augsburg were stuck with a€18 million (£15m/$20m) signing they had no clue what to do with. Both sides swung big, both sides missed.

Now, less than a year later, they find themselves on opposing sides of another crossroad. On one side, Pepi, whose spell in the Netherlands has him feeling ready for a new challenge; on the other, Augsburg, who feel they've been disrespected and have no desire to let him leave.

What happens next will set the tone for the rest of Pepi's career. He's still just 20, but this move, this next big move, will likely be the difference between success or failure at Europe's top levels.

And Pepi is ready to push all of his chips into the middle of the table yet again, but will Augsburg be willing to let it happen? We'll find out.

  • Getty

    Pepi's initial wager

After lighting up MLS, Pepi found himself emerging as the U.S. men's national team's new star. He was the striker of the future, headed to the World Cup where he'd lead the line in Qatar.

And of course, as he grew into that role, European clubs came calling. It became a matter of when, not if, Pepi would make the leap across the Atlantic to join a club that would give him the chance to make the leap in his own career.

He inevitably settled on Augsburg, a club struggling in the Bundesliga and desperately in need of goals. They put down big money to sign Pepi, thinking they'd landed the striker of the present and future who would lead them to better things.

    It didn't happen.

Pepi failed to scored across 16 appearances and, although the club narrowly survived relegation, it was clear that this partnership wasn't working out.

    A lifeline in the Netherlands

In September, Augsburg announced that Pepi would spend the 2022-23 season on loan with Groningen. For the German side, it was a chance to give Pepi a change of scenery that would, maybe, restore some of his depleted value. For Pepi, it was a step back down the ladder that would allow him to play in a league that could be more his pace.

There were initial concerns. Groningen, like Augsburg, aren't the strongest side in their league. They aren't a club that is dominating possession, creating chances and scoring goals, finding themselves in the lower echelons of the Eredivisie. Would this just be a repeat for Pepi, who was so often starved of service in Augsburg?

As it would turn out, it isn't. Pepi has scored 10 goals in the Eredivisie this season, tied for seventh-most in the league. Everyone else in double digits plays for the league's top eight teams. Pepi and Groningen, meanwhile, sit second-bottom in 17th.

Groningen may very well get relegated this season, but its no fault of Pepi's, as the striker has been one of the squad's only bright spots. He's been involved in 13 of the team's 27 total goals, too. If the club survives, it'll be thanks to him.

Pepi is scoring goals again, for both club and country, having made his USMNT return in March. And that brings us to everyone's favorite question, especially for players on loan: what next?

  • Getty Images

A war of words over his next move

Pepi and his agent say they know what's next: there's no way in hell the striker is going back to Augsburg.

Speaking to recently, the two said that the intention is to go elsewhere, citing disrespect and broken promises from the German club.

"For me it is clear: I do not want to go back to Augsburg. I have already let the club know that," Pepi said. "I have been promised and promised things that have not been fulfilled. Then it is simple: then you have to look for another club."

His agent Jaime Garcia added: "We appreciate the investment the club has made, but once he came in, it seemed they didn't know how to handle such an investment. The manager didn't speak to him, the director wanted him so badly that he twice did not show up for an appointment with Ricardo that he had scheduled himself.

"The coach talks about him at a press conference, but does not respond to a message Ricardo sent him for four days. Is that respectful? But maybe he knew that Ricardo wanted to tell him that he doesn't want to return to Augsburg. And then an 18-year-old boy from Texas is criticized for not showing anything in the average 28 minutes of playing time. Tell me: what can you show in such a short period of time?"

The club, meanwhile, is unconvinced by Pepi's latest comments, with sporting director Stefan Reuter pushing back in a recent interview.

"Ricardo has a long-term contract with us. With his qualities, he fits in very well with our style of play. The coach also thinks highly of him. Of course I understand what his agent has said,” Reuter told "But the facts are clear and there have been no inquiries, let alone offers, for him so far. So a sale is not an issue for us at the moment. As always, we would consider concrete and adequate offers. But we will discuss that directly with him and the agent, not through the public."

    Where next for Pepi?

Should he move on from Augsburg, it appears he'll have no shortage of suitors.

Pepi has been linked with the Premier League, with differing reports as to whether or not the striker himself wants the switch. It would represent another big bet from Pepi, who could quickly find himself in a situation similar to what he experienced at Augsburg if he doesn't hit the ground running.

Notably, though, he's been linked to two Dutch giants – PSV and Feyenoord. A shift up the Eredivisie ladder makes significant sense for a player of Pepi's age. With either club, Pepi would be making a big jump to a big club, with Feyenoord currently leading the league and PSV in second. He'd be playing with a much better team with much better players, and getting European experience. As a striker, what else could you want?

Starring in the Europa League or Champions League is a quick way for a player to put himself on the radar of the real giants, and both Feyenoord and PSV have sent plenty of players to those big-hitters in the past.

It is the decision Pepi will face this summer: whether to take a small step or a giant leap. That all depends, though, on whether or not Augsburg allow him to make that decision at all.
