ScorecardThe second Test between Bangladesh and New Zealand did not start on the third day as well after relentless rain ensured a hat-trick of wash outs.Although there was no rain when play was scheduled to begin at 9.00am, the start was delayed because of water on the covers and a soggy outfield. There was going to be an inspection at 11.00am but it started to drizzle before then. The covers were finally removed but the umpires, after inspecting the ground, felt that it would take too long to dry it out and decided to abandon play for the day.The weather forecast for Tuesday is more promising with sunny intervals predicted but too much time has been lost for the possibility of a result. The Mirpur game will decide the two-Test series after New Zealand won the first match in Chittagong by chasing 317. They were given a scare when Bangladesh bowled them out for 171 in the first innings, with Shakib Al Hasan taking career-best figures of 7 for 36. But Daniel Vettori scored half-centuries in both innings and picked up nine wickets to guide his team to a three-wicket win. New Zealand won the preceding ODI series 2-1.New Zealand: (likely) 1 Aaron Redmond, 2 Jamie How, 3 Jesse Ryder, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Brendon McCullum (wk), 6 Daniel Flynn, 7 Grant Elliott, 8 Daniel Vettori (capt), 9 Kyle Mills, 10 Iain O’Brien, 11 Jeetan Patel.Bangladesh: (likely) 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Junaid Siddique, 3 Rajin Saleh, 4 Mohammad Ashraful (capt), 5 Naeem Islam, 6 Mehrab Hossain jnr, 7 Shakib Al Hasan, 8 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 9 Mashrafe Moratza, 10 Abdur Razzak, 11 Shahadat Hossain.

Hedley Howarth, who was New Zealand’s leading slow bowler during the early 1970s and a key man in their first Test win on the subcontinent, has died at the age of 64. Howarth, the elder brother of the former New Zealand captain Geoff Howarth, collected 86 wickets at 36.95 in his 30 Test appearances.A left-arm orthodox bowler, Howarth occupies a significant place in New Zealand’s history as the man who bowled them to victory against India in Nagpur in 1969-70. India were chasing 277 in the fourth innings but Howarth’s 5 for 34, including a wonderful catch off his own bowling, ensured the hosts never got close.New Zealand’s 167-run win was their first Test success on the subcontinent. It was also in that part of the world that Howarth collected his only other five-wicket haul in a Test, when he picked up 5 for 80 against Pakistan in Karachi.Howarth’s control and flight made him a useful prospect at international level and he was often used in long spells to dry up the scoring. A dangerous bowler on the first-class scene, Howarth picked up 541 wickets at 25.27 in an Auckland career that lasted nearly two decades.Justin Vaughan, the chief executive of New Zealand Cricket, said Howarth would be remembered as an important player during a positive era for New Zealand. “Hedley was part of a Test era in the early ’70s that saw New Zealand performing consistently on the world stage,” Vaughan said.”His bowling was a big factor in that success. He remained closely involved in the game after his retirement – especially in Auckland – and his loss will be keenly felt by the cricketing community throughout New Zealand.”

– Hoje, no primeiro trabalho visando o jogo, observamos as melhores formações.

Update provided on Saints target Mendez

Juan Sanchez, the agent of Southampton target Brais Mendez, has confirmed that there has been interest from ‘many clubs’ in Mendez’s services.

The Lowdown: Saints eye Mendez

Southampton are said to be interested in the 24-year-old winger (TuttoMercatoWeb), who currently plays for Celta Vigo in La Liga.

There are several other clubs also linked with his services, however, including Norwich City, Lyon, and an unnamed London side.

The Latest: Agent provides update

Speaking to Marca, Sanchez has provided his thoughts on the interest in his client. He said:

“It is inevitable that the clubs are attentive to a player like Brais, 24 years old and with the season he has had. It is normal that there is interest in him and that they exist clubs that ask you. From then on, it is a matter that depends on whether they want to talk to Celta about an offer possibility. That may or may not happen. There is still a lot of market. Of course there are many clubs that ask about their situation because he is a very striking and high-quality player.”

The Verdict: Top talent

Mendez is far from a household name on these shores, but he is becoming a more and more familiar face in Spain and La Liga. He enjoyed the best season of his career from a goalscoring perspective last term, finding the back of the net on nine occasions – he has now done 25 times throughout his career (Transfermarkt) – and that even earned him a call-up to the Spanish national side (AS), albeit as part of the training camp and not to go to the European Championships.

Mendez has three years left on his contract with Celta and is valued at £12.6m (Transfermarkt) – he will not come cheap for Ralph Hasenhuttl and co. However, sometimes, you must speculate to accumulate, and in this case it may be worth the Saints parting with a bigger sum for a talented player who seems to be getting better every year.

In other news, Southampton fans are livid at news on this defender.

Palmer worried following West Brom sporting director development

Former West Brom midfielder Carlton Palmer has told Football FanCast in an exclusive interview that the Baggies not hiring a new sporting director could be bad news for the club’s manager.

Luke Dowling recently left the position and it looks like the Midlands outfit are not looking to appoint a direct replacement.

According to Football Insider, West Brom plan to scrap the director of football model they currently have at the club and will instead allow their manager to work directly with the recruitment team on transfers.

Palmer, however, fears the lack of a director of football or sporting director just leaves room for the owner or chairman to interfere in football matters.

“It’s bad news. It sounds like the chairman [or owner] is trying to call the shots, and you can’t do that.

“If you’ve got a chairman who knows the game, then that’s fine. But if you’ve got a chairman who doesn’t know the game…”

All in all, it would be an interesting move, with a lot of clubs today having a director of football, as Football Insider points out.

But perhaps it could work out, if the manager is actually in control and does not have the owner or chairman overruling him on football matters.

AVFC: Villans make contact for Mohamed Camara

Aston Villa and West Ham have both made contact with Young Boys over a possible swoop for centre-back Mohamed Camara.

The Lowdown: Villa’s busy summer

Villa haven’t wasted any time in the current transfer window, with two big signings already sealed.

Emiliano Buendia joined in a club-record deal from Norwich City, while Villa pipped Burnley and Watford to bring Ashley Young back to the club on Thursday.

England’s Under-16 captain Josh Feeney could also be making the move from Fleetwood Town, and it seems as if Camara may well be Johan Lange’s next big target.

The Latest: Source shares Camara contact

According to Sports Witness, who were told by a source, both Villa and the Hammers have asked for information on the 6 foot 3 defender.

Camara extended his deal with the Swiss side just last month, however, the report claims they would sell the Guinea international if a convincing offer comes in.

The 23-year-old, who has five international caps to his name, made 39 appearances in all competitions last season.

The Verdict: A possible Engels replacement?

Should Villa firm up their interest with a convincing offer that appeals to Young Boys, Camara could end up replacing the outgoing Bjorn Engels.

The Villa defender is set to move to Royal Antwerp after a deal was agreed between the two clubs on Friday, so you’d expect Dean Smith will look to bring in another senior centre-back alongside Ezri Konsa, Tyrone Mings and Kortney Hause.

Camara’s Transfermarkt valuation stands at just £2.7m, but it appears as if it will take a lot more than that to bring him to Bodymoor Heath.
