'I have not got justice' – Srivastava

Shalabh Srivastava, the Uttar Pradesh fast bowler who was banned for five years by the BCCI for conspiring to fix a match, has claimed he is innocent and has not been given justice. Meanwhile, TP Sudhindra, who was banned for life after admitting he took money to bowl a no-ball in a domestic game, will take legal advice ahead of his next step. The BCCI’s disciplinary committee found Srivastava guilty of agreeing, and negotiating terms, to fix a match though no fixing eventually took place. But the player maintains he could not have done so as he did not pay a single game in this year’s IPL.”I still maintain that I am innocent and I have not got justice,” Srivastava told the . “When I spoke to the BCCI officials, I told them that I have never been involved in any match-fixing. I told them that I haven’t even played in this year’s IPL… I thought I would get proper justice and won’t be punished as I am innocent.”Srivastava, 30, did concede that it was a mistake to be so friendly with people he did not know, but insisted that the subject of match-fixing was never discussed. “I had injured my knee and was recuperating in Lucknow. How could I have negotiated with someone and promise him to fix matches and bowl no-balls?”At this stage, however, he has not considered appealing against his ban. “I don’t know what to do now that I have been banned for five years. Maybe some sort of divine intervention would help me and that’s why I have come to seek Sai Baba’s blessings [in Shirdi].”As for Sudhindra, he told the : “I regret my wrongdoing.” He plans to consult his lawyers about his next step. He said he turned down an offer of Rs 1 crore (US$ 175,450) during the sting operation despite his family’s money problems. He was found guilty of taking Rs 5,000 to deliver a no-ball in a local game.”People don’t realise the financial state my family was in. I was trapped,” he said. “But I did decline an eight-figure offer made by the same people. I will come out with the true story soon. Let me talk to my lawyer first. I don’t want another youngster to be trapped like me.”Sudhindra and Srivastava are two of the five Indian domestic players to be banned by the disciplinary committee. The BCCI announced the penalties on June 30 after studying a report on the allegations, which had arisen in May after an India TV sting that alluded to the five being involved in match-fixing and negotiating for extra – and illegal – pay.The three other players – Madhya Pradesh batsman Mohnish Mishra, Goa offspinner Amit Yadav and Himachal Pradesh allrounder Abhinav Bali – were given one-year bans for bringing the game into disrepute through “loose talk and unsubstantiated bragging.” The punishments took effect from May 15, the date on which the IPL governing council suspended them.

Dawson dampens Leicestershire expectations

Part-time spinner Liam Dawson took three late wickets to undo Leicestershire’s good start on a rain-affected day

26-Apr-2012
ScorecardLeft-arm spinner Liam Dawson took three late wickets to enable Hampshire to finish in a much stronger position than they could have expected after Greg Smith’s bright half-century for Leicestershire. On a rain-ruined first day, play did not get under way until 2pm and at the close Leicestershire had slumped to 159 for 6 from 62.2 overs despite a promising start to their innings.Hampshire were led by former Australia international Simon Katich in the absence of Jimmy Adams, who missed the match for personal reasons, and Katich had no hesitation in fielding first in gloomy conditions. But Leicestershire found batting easier than they might have anticipated as bowlers struggled to cope with a wet ball and soaking outfield.Matthew Boyce and Smith put on 34 for the first wicket, while Jacques Du Toit made just 8 but his dismissal meant Smith was joined by captain Ramnaresh Sarwan in the best stand of the day, worth 81. Smith and Sarwan took the score to 146 for 2 before a late flurry of wickets following Dawson’s introduction to the attack saw four fall for 13.Smith was first to go, bowled by Dawson after an increasingly fluent innings of 68 from 168 balls and including seven fours. That was the signal for the Leicestershire collapse to begin, Dawson striking in his next over when Sarwan’s innings of 46 was ended by a slip catch by Sean Ervine.Kadeer Ali had his off stump knocked back by left-arm pace bowler Chris Wood before Dawson won an appeal for lbw against Nadeem Malik.Dawson came on as fourth change and only because Hampshire had chosen to leave out No. 1 spinner Danny Briggs, expecting the pitch to help their battery of pace bowlers. Dawson, who bowls only occasionally, ended the day with figures of 3 for 13.

Looking to play Ranji from December 6 – Badrinath

S Badrinath, the injured India middle-order batsman, has said he hopes to return to first-class cricket in two weeks

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Nov-2011S Badrinath, the injured India middle-order batsman, has said he hopes to return to first-class cricket in two weeks. He has been sidelined since mid-October, after hurting his shoulder during the Challenger Trophy in Nagpur.”I’m making good progress. I have started batting from this week,” he said in Delhi. “I am aiming to play the upcoming Ranji match from December 6 [against Bengal]. I’ll get to know on Monday whether I would be able to take the field.”Badrinath is set to receive the Madhavrao Scindia award for the highest run-getter in last year’s Ranji season, where he amassed 922 runs at 131.71. “It was something I wanted to achieve. Last year I went into the season with an aim to do something phenomenal and make a statement with what I do on the field. So, I am happy I am able to achieve it and I hope it doesn’t go unnoticed.”He has missed the first three rounds of the Ranji Trophy, a tournament where he has been a heavy scorer over the past few seasons. Despite the early season set back, he has set his sights high this year as well. “I think I will come back and do whatever I can in the rest of the games. My aim is to make an impact. I have not got a triple century yet in a first-class game and that is what I want to do.”Badrinath, 31, last played for India during the tour of the West Indies earlier this year, and though there are several younger candidates for a spot in the middle-order, he remained optimistic of making a comeback. “I have been in the national team for a while, but didn’t get a chance to play [much]. In the back of my mind, I know I haven’t really lost. Maybe the [national] spots would open up soon and I feel I am the best guy to do the job.”

– Memórias boas do jogo no Barradão.

Ian Billcliff omitted from Canada's probables

Batsman Ian Billcliff is the only notable omission from Canada’s preliminary 30-man squad for the 2011 World Cup. Ashish Bagai has been named captain and the squad also includes veteran allrounder John Davison who has been actively involved with Cricket Australia as a spin bowling coach.Chris James, the chairman of selectors, said it was a tough decision to omit Billcliff, who has played 19 ODIs for Canada averaging just under 28, including three games during the 2007 World Cup in West Indies. “It was an especially difficult decision for us when it came down to Billy (Billcliff). Internationally, he has been one of our top-rated performers. Unfortunately we were unable to line up our schedules with the preparation tours and we had to leave him out.”Canada have just completed a short tour of India where they played against several sides. They next head to the West Indies for the Caribbean T20 in January where they will also play a few 50-over matches against Antigua and Somerset.”We are confident that we have found the right mix of youth and experience to represent Canada at the World Cup and build a solid foundation for the future of Canadian cricket,” James said. The final 15-man World Cup line-up will be named after their participation in the Caribbean T20 tournament.Canada squad: Ashish Bagai (capt), Waleed Ahmad, Manny Aulakh, Akshay Bagai, Harvir Baidwan, Trevin Bastiampillai, Umar Bhatti, Grant Broadhurst, Rizwan Cheema, Khurram Chohan, John Davison, Parth Desai, Jeremy Gordon, Tyson Gordon, Ruvindu Gunasekera, Amabhir Hansra, Sandeep Jyoti, Nitish Kumar, Usman Limbada, Henry Osinde, Hiral Patel, Cecil Pervez,Balaji Rao, Manrick Singh, Junaid Siddiqui, Zeeshan Siddiqui, Zubin Surkari, Hamza Tariq, Karl Whatham, Zameer Zaheer

Strauss backs struggling Collingwood for World Cup

Paul Collingwood has been told to go away and clear his mind before he regains his place in the one-day side, after being dropped for the opening match against Australia

Brydon Coverdale in Melbourne16-Jan-2011Paul Collingwood has been told to go away and clear his mind before he regains his place in England’s one-day side, after being dropped for the opening match against Australia in Melbourne. Collingwood has been a fixture of the ODI outfit for nearly a decade and has played at two World Cups, but despite being axed he appears almost certain to add a third to his resume, according to the captain Andrew Strauss.”It is a bit of a form thing,” Strauss said. “We feel that he’s been struggling with the bat for a while now. The best way for him to come back is to spend a bit of time out of the side and refresh his mind. He’s obviously a very important part of our one-day setup and will be going forward to the World Cup, but he’s not in great nick at the moment. It’s tough on him but it would have been tough on someone else to be left out as well.”Collingwood, 34, has retired from Test cricket, ending with a miserable series personally, as he made 83 runs in the five Tests at 13.83, but still an enormously satisfying one as his team won the Ashes away from home. He remains England’s Twenty20 captain but in the 50-over format, he faces a fight to win back his place, and it seems unlikely he’ll be in the mix until much later in the series.”It’s a seven-match series, so there are a lot of [selection] permutations,” Strauss said. “We’d like him to spend the next week or so just clearing his mind, and obviously doing some work in the nets, but primarily getting his mind clear and making sure he’s very clear on how he wants to play his game.”He’s not going to change his game, he’s going to play the same way. But sometimes you need a clear mind, and you don’t want to be thinking too much about the dismissals you’ve had recently, you just want to be able to go out and see the ball and hit the ball.”The form of Kevin Pietersen could make it even tougher for Collingwood to force his way back in, although it also provides him with some inspiration. Pietersen was dropped during the one-day series against Pakistan in September but in his first match back, proved he has plenty to offer the side, in compiling a classy 78 from 75 balls in the six-wicket loss at the MCG.”He showed his quality today,” Strauss said. “He’s able to clear the boundary, kept putting pressure on the opposition bowlers. He’s had a bit of a fallow period in one-day cricket but he showed his class today.”Pietersen’s efforts were not enough against an Australian side carried by a herculean 161 from Shane Watson, and it’s the second consecutive win for the hosts after they triumphed in the second Twenty20 in Melbourne on Friday. But there is plenty of time remaining for England to turn things around.”They’re one-nil up in the series now,” Strauss said, “but we’re still very confident that we can win this series.”

Rain forces stalemate in first round of matches

A round-up of the first round of games from the Bangladesh National Cricket League

Rabeed Imam09-Oct-2010

Mohammad Ashraful was at his best against Khulna•Associated Press

Considering the odds the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had to overcome to get the 12th version of the National Cricket League going, the first week of the tournament was a classic anticlimax. First, there was the issue of the availability of venues and with renovation and development for World Cup 2011 going on at the main grounds, the home-and-away format was sacrificed for neutral grounds and the duration of the event shortened. Then the New Zealand series put paid to the chances of the international stars participating in the league. As if that wasn’t enough, a late monsoon pushed the NCL’s start back by a week. When it finally kicked off, the three matches had a total of five completed innings as rain, courtesy a depression in the Bay of Bengal, forced an indefinite postponement of the tournament. Dhaka Division, however, weren’t complaining after making good use of the three days of reasonable weather up north in Rajshahi against Khulna Division but the rains held sway in the other venues.Despite having players of quality, Dhaka have not had the desired results in recent past. All that could change this year with a batting line-up boasting the class of Mohammad Ashraful, Mehrab Hossain Jr, Shamsur Rahman and the exciting talent of Rony Talukder, Shuvagoto Hom and Anamul Haque. Khulna on the other hand remain a shadow of their 2007-08 ‘dream team’ without Mashrafe Mortaza, Shakib Al Hasan, Abdur Razzak, Imrul Kayes and now retired Habibul Bashar, and they were under pressure from the start after putting Dhaka in on a true surface.Having lost his place in the Bangladesh side, captain Ashraful hit a fluent 113 to revive his World Cup hopes. With the ball coming on to the bat nicely, Ashraful was unstoppable and after his exit, Hom, a stand-by for the New Zealand series, and the Bangladesh Under 19 wicketkeeper Anamul went after the Khulna attack to reach their maiden first-class tons as Dhaka surged to 496. At 191 for 6, Khulna were staring at the prospect of following on after Tushar Imran’s promising 54 was neutralised by an Ashraful delivery. Khulna captain Saghir Hossain (65) tried to lift the spirits on day three, a tough ask with Dolar Mahmud and Syed Rasel already headed for Dhaka on emergency call-up to the national team. Left-arm spinner Elias Sunny polished off the tail to finish with 5 for 77 as Khulna folded for 277 giving Dhaka the batting bonus. Ashraful did not enforce the follow-on and when Dhaka batted again Shamsur punished the severely-weakened Khulna bowling on way to a rapid 102. Closing at 170 for 5 with a lead of 489, Dhaka must have fancied full points with a clinical last-day effort. The elements however, had other plans. On a dodgy outfield battered by continuous showers in Jessore, champions Rajshahi Division were frustrated when just 15 overs could be bowled on a dry first day against Sylhet Division. On day two they found Enamul Haque Jnr (4 for 43) using all his experience and guile under a murky sky and on a sluggish pitch. Khaled Mashud’s side were dismissed for 160 and the Sylhet openers were at the crease for around five minutes and two balls before the skies opened up. Not another ball was bowled as the game was washed out.In Bogra, the towering Barisal Division left-arm seamer Shafaq Al Zabir impressed with an inspired new-ball burst that had Chittagong Division gasping at 3 for 16. Zabir was once considered the next great hope after Mortaza but could never live up to that billing. Here, however, he was in his element and had openers Gazi Salahuddin and Nafees Iqbal lbw by bringing the ball back in menacingly. Nazimuddin (91) steadied the innings but Barisal continued to take wickets at the other end. Chittagong were all out for 202 and Barisal closed the first day on 55 for 2. They limped to 119 for 6 in the 37 overs of play on the second day, but rain scuppered what was turning into an interesting tussle.Player of the week – Mohammad AshrafulKnowing that every innings matters if he wants to return to the Bangladesh side, Ashraful batted like a man possessed against Khulna. His timing, which had deserted him even in the Bangladesh nets, was back and there was a calmness and assurance about him that has not been on view recently. Dhaka had three centurions in the first innings but only one of them actually showed the way. Ashraful’s captaincy was also imaginative and he was not shy in taking the ball in his hand when others couldn’t make inroads.
