Percy drops Steven Gerrard update

Aston Villa are set to make a formal approach to Steven Gerrard regarding the vacant managerial post at Villa Park.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to John Percy’s recent report for The Telegraph, in which the journalist revealed that Villa’s owners, Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens, view the 41-year-old manager as the perfect figurehead for their project at Villa Park.

Percy continues to suggest that the Rangers manager would be open to the possibility of a move to the Premier League side, who are hoping to appoint a new coach before the club’s next league fixture on November 20.

Fans will be buzzing

Considering the overall level of support the prospect of appointing Gerrard has generated amongst the Villa fanbase, the news that the club look set to make an official approach for the 41-year-old, in addition to the fact that the former Liverpool captain appears keen on a move to Villa Park, is sure to have left Villans buzzing.

Indeed, according to two polls recently ran on Football FanCast, Villa fans would prefer Gerrard to both Belgium national team coach Roberto Martinez and Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl – both of whom are also reported to be leading candidates for the position at Aston Villa.

Furthermore, a number of fans have also been expressing their desire for the former England international to be given a shot at Villa Park on Twitter, with one claiming that Gerrard’s passion and winner’s mentality is “what we need” at Villa, while another stated that they would “love to give Steve Gerrard a go” at their club.

It is not difficult to see why so many fans would like Gerrard to succeed Dean Smith, as, since his appointment in Glasgow, the 41-year-old has highly impressed, steering Gers to the league title last season without losing a single game – and stopping their bitter rivals Celtic securing ten consecutive Scottish Premiership crowns in doing so – as well as guiding the club to the last 16 of the Europa League in back to back campaigns.

As such, Percy’s latest update is sure to be very well received by many of the Aston Villa fanbase, as it would certainly appear as if, at present, all things point to Gerrard’s arrival in the second city in the not too distant future.

Aston Villa: Fans react to Paulo Fonseca links

Aston Villa have contacted Newcastle United-linked manager Paulo Fonseca ahead of possibly replacing Dean Smith at Villa Park.

That’s according to The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope, and, as to be expected, a number of Villa fans have been reacting to the rumours on social media.

Smith’s position in charge of Villa is thought to be in ‘serious jeopardy’ with four defeats from four in October leaving Christian Purslow with a big decision to make.

Hope stated that Smith is on borrowed time in the Midlands and informal contact has been made with Fonseca’s representatives.

The 48-year-old, recently labelled as ‘talented’ by Alex Goncalves (who runs Portuguese football channel @TugaScoutPT), has been linked with the vacant Newcastle job.

His last position in management came at AS Roma, with the 3-4-2-1 style boss having the likes of FC Porto, Braga and Shakhtar Donetsk on his CV.

Lumb ton boosts Hampshire

Division One

Yorkshire’s bowlers gave their team the upper hand on the first day of the Roses match by reducing Lancashire to 226 for 7 at Headingley. Yorkshire ambushed Lancashire by striking twice in the first three overs. Tim Bresnan struck first, inducing an edge from Steven Croft that was taken one-handed by Gerard Brophy, low and to his right. Matthew Hoggard dismissed Paul Horton in the next over, caught on the drive at backward point. Mal Loye and VVS Laxman had scored hundreds in the Roses match at Old Trafford but couldn’t repeat the feat today. Both batsmen were dismissed by Adil Rashid – Laxman made 50 – leaving Lancashire on 94 for 4. Mark Chilton then held up one end, remaining unbeaten on 73, but three more wickets fell at the other before play ended.Half-centuries from Hampshire’s openers followed by Michael Lumb’s unbeaten hundred led the visitors to a strong position – 345 for 3 – at the end of the first day against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge, although that was tempered by a season-ending injury to Michael Carberry. He and Jimmy Adams added 146 for the first wicket before Adams (55) played on against Andre Adams while trying to cut. Adams then caused Carberry’s injury with a rare delivery to climb off a length to break the left-hander’s left ring finger. Carberry had cracked 17 fours in his 86 but Lumb ensured that the momentum was not lost. He scored steadily, aid by a short boundary, well supported by James Vince and Liam Dawson, to finish on 103 at stumps.Click here for the report on the first day’s play between Somerset and Sussex at Taunton.Click here for John Ward’s report from Chester-le-Street where Durham are on top against Warwickshire.

Division Two

It was a good day for bowlers at Chesterfield with 13 wickets falling on the first day between Derbyshire and Northamptonshire. Derbyshire chose to bat and were dismissed for 255 after which Northamptonshire lost three batsmen on their way to 137. Derbyshire got off to a steady start, with their openers adding 47, before the trouble began. Jack Brooks and Johann van der Wath cut through the top order, finishing with 4 for 76 and 3 for 92 respectively, as Northamptonshire began to make inroads. They were stabilised a little by James Pipe and Garry Park who scored half-centuries but even their efforts were not enough to take the score past 300. In reply, Northamptonshire progressed to a sound 131 for 1 before they lost Rob White (62) and Stephen Peters in quick succession. White’s was an aggressive innings – he pulled Nantie Hayward for six and sliced Steffan Jones over third man for another – as he reached his fifty off only 41 balls.Half-centuries from Matthew Spriegel and Chris Schofield helped Surrey recover after a weak performance from their top order against Essex at Colchester. David Masters, Chris Wright and Danish Kaneria cut through the line-up, reducing Surrey to 136 for 5, with James Foster taking three catches, before Essex met resistance. Spriegel and Schofield revived the innings with a 127-run association for the sixth wicket before Tim Phillips had Spriegel caught for 61. Schofield, however, remained unbeaten on 87 as Surrey ended the day on 304 for 6.Josh Cobb, the 19-year old batsman, returned to the Leicestershire line-up after missing three games with a brisk 72 to lead his team to 332 for 8 against Gloucestershire at Grace Road. Cobb outscored Paul Nixon, who made 57, but Leicestershire kept losing wickets in clusters and were 182 for 5 at one stage. James Taylor, however, provided stability with his unbeaten 76 and, with help from James Benning (37) and Wayne White (23), led Leicestershire past 300. Steve Kirby was the best bowler for Gloucestershire, taking 3 for 64, while Jon Lewis and Richard Dawson took two each.

Smith must unleash Cantwell at Norwich

With Dean Smith the front runner to become the new Norwich City head coach, there are many questions on how he could develop the talent brewing at Carrow Road.

The Canaries are currently struggling to pick up points in the league, and after their first win away to Brentford, the board pulled the plug on head coach, Daniel Farke, after four seasons. The decision came after a number of poor performances, that has seen some popular players dropped from the team this season, including local talent, Todd Cantwell.

It isn’t completely clear why Cantwell has been dropped to the U23’s as of late, but there have been many rumours surrounding his removal from the first team.

Farke did briefly speak out about Cantwell’s absence after the 7-0 loss to Chelsea.

The German coach said: “The rules are clear for each player. You have to be physically and mentally prepared and show consistency in training and be available. The standards and the levels are the same for every player.”

Meanwhile, the young gem’s former coach Gary Cockaday noticed his ability from a young age, he told The Athletic: “He did things every week that were just special. It was God-given. No one taught it.”

Cantwell reportedly impressed a number of Premier League established clubs in his previous season in the top flight, and has often been the topic of transfer rumours to Arsenal, but nothing materialised, with Norwich not happy to sell for less than £30m.

The 23-year-old midfielder, was previously linked to Villa under Smith after Jack Grealish made his move to Manchester City in the Summer. Speculation suggested that the Villians were poised to make a move for the Norwich star, but after signing his teammate, Emiliano Buendia, for £38M, interest died off.

Dean Smith’s work at Aston Villa with their very own local talent, Grealish, is one of his most famous accomplishments. Guiding the Championship playing teenager into becoming a £100m Premier League player, who is now a household name and starter in the England and Manchester City team.

The £19.8m-rated dynamo displays similar capabilities and positioning attributes to the former Villa coaches prodigy, but has failed to reach his full potential under Farke.

The appointment of Smith at Norwich would surely be of huge advantage to Cantwell, who earns £25k-per-week, with the opportunity to work under a coach who clearly understands how to tap into the potential of a young attacking midfielder needing structure and guidance to elevate their performance and career.

The Canaries are yet to announce their new manager, but are expected to make a decision before the end of the international break.

Rangers: Gerrard must axe Scott Arfield

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard could have some tough decisions to make next summer as a number of players are due to be out of contract.

Connor Goldson, Steven Davis, Leon Balogun, Scott Arfield and Jon McLaughlin are just a few of the first-team names on the expiry list, although the club hold a one-year extension option for Balogun.

This means that Gerrard, along with Ross Wilson, could be set for some difficult conversations in the upcoming months as Rangers plot their squad for the 2022/23 campaign.

His time’s up

One player who the club should be looking to move on is Canadian international midfielder Arfield. Gerrard must make the tough decision and cut ties with the experienced ex-Burnley man as his time is up at Ibrox.

The 33-year-old has only played six times in the Scottish Premiership this term, with one start to his name to date, and has averaged a dismal WhoScored rating of 6.40. In the Europa League, he has played 12 minutes of football off the bench in the three group stage games against Lyon, Sparta Prague and Brondby combined.

This suggests that the £16k-per-week dud is not deemed good enough to play regularly in the Europa League or Premiership for Rangers. At the age of 33, he could still have a few years left in the tank to go somewhere else and play week-in-week-out, which is why Gerrard ruthlessly axing him from the squad could work for all parties involved.

In terms of how his departure would affect the squad, a replacement could already be in the works. TEAMtalk reported last month that Rangers are closing in on a deal to sign Joe Rothwell on a pre-contract deal in the January window.

This means that the 26-year-old would arrive at Ibrox on a free transfer in the summer, providing the perfect opportunity for Gerrard to allow Arfield to leave, with Rothwell taking up his place in the squad.

Therefore, it is time for the former Premier League midfielder to leave Glasgow at the end of the season. The succession plan, with Rothwell, appears to be well underway and his lack of involvement on the pitch this term suggests that Gerrard does not rely on his footballing ability enough to warrant paying him £16k-per-week for another two or three years.

Liverpool fans love potential Klopp plan

A number of Liverpool supporters love journalist Simon Hughes’ plan for Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, urging him to return after taking a sabbatical.

Klopp has been a game-changing figure at Liverpool from the moment he walked through the door back in October 2015, spending six memorable years at the club.

The 54-year-old has transformed the Reds on and off the pitch, guiding his side to Premier League and Champions League glory and playing some of the best football in the club’s history.

Worryingly, Klopp’s current deal expires in the summer of 2024 and the German has been vocal about taking a break from football at some point.

According to The Athletic‘s Hughes on Twitter, an ideal scenario would see Pep Lijnders take charge of Liverpool for a year while Klopp takes a sabbatical before he returns refreshed and raring to go again.

Leeds’ Tyler Roberts was shocking vs Fulham

Leeds United sealed their path into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup thanks to a penalty shoot-out victory over Fulham on Tuesday night.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side had Illan Meslier to thank as the French goalkeeper denied Rodrigo Muniz in sudden death to send the Whites home happy.

But while Leeds may have booked their passage into the next round of the competition, one man who really let his manager down with a woeful display was Tyler Roberts.

One of a number of senior, or at least established first-team players, on the pitch as Bielsa went with a fairly strong starting line-up, the Welshman looked completely off the pace as he led the line.

As per Sofascore, he made just four successful passes in the time that he was on the pitch, while he only had 14 touches too – both of those actually being lower than goalkeeper Illan Meslier, and a real indication of how he struggled to get into the game.

The Welshman also lost 50% of his duels, including the only one he contested in the air, and it was no surprise that after just 55 minutes on the clock, he was subbed off by Bielsa for Adam Forshaw.

And, writing in his post-match player ratings for Leeds Live, Beren Cross gave him a five, saying: “Tried to ask questions of the Fulham defence, but only got the one opening he wanted. Was well charged down by Marek Rodak.”

It was a performance that raises yet more serious questions about whether he’s actually good enough to be competing for a Leeds team who want to re-establish themselves as a Premier League force, especially when you consider he’s now yet to score or assist in seven games this campaign.

Roberts hardly set the world alight at Elland Road last season too – he managed just one goal and provided two assists in 27 top-flight matches – despite the fact the 22-year-old seems to be a clear favourite of Bielsa’s (one run of form saw him start 12 consecutive games in the Premier League).

The Leeds boss himself said: “He has played many games in a row and has shown he has the resources to justify his starting position in the team. He has virtues that are very difficult to find in football at the moment. He has all the resources necessary to unbalance offensively and still has a lot to grow to make these attempts useful and efficient.”

Well, on Tuesday night, Roberts did nothing to prove why he’s a starting calibre player for Leeds, and why his time in the team might well be up.

Meanwhile, this Leeds star was Bielsa’s real hero vs Fulham…

Spinners put CCC on top

A round-up of the third day of the 13th round matches of the Regional Four Day Competition

Cricinfo staff06-Apr-2009A 128-run for the ninth wicket between wicketkeeper Chadwick Walton and Kevin McClean, and a good bowling display, put Combined Campuses and Colleges firmly on top against Barbados in Bridgetown. Barbados were struggling at 167 for 7 at stumps on the third day after spinners Ryan Austin, Anderson Sealy and Kavesh Kantasingh took five wickets between them. The home team are just 25 ahead with three wickets in hand – only Dwayne Smith offered some resistance with a fighting 87 – and with a day left, CCC, who have won twice this season, are the favourites. Barbados had fought well on the third day, capturing eight wickets and limiting CCC’s overnight lead to 36 but they were denied by Walton (87) and Mclean (50 not out). Ryan Hinds took 6 for 89 for Barbados but his efforts were undone by a hapless batting performance.Jamaica, who have already won the competition, held the edge against Guyana in a closely contested match in Montego Bay, extending their lead to 296 at stumps with three wickets remaining. Their bowlers did an admirable job in the morning session to run through the Guyana tail, taking four wickets for 40 to bowl them out for 308 and secure a lead of 81. Medium-pacer David Bernard (4-85) and legspinner Gavin Wallace (3 for 39) bagged two wickets each before lunch to hand their team the advantage. However, Jamaica faltered in their second innings after a solid start, as spinners Davendra Bishoo and Veerasammy Permaul shared five wickets to put them under pressure. At one stage, Jamaica slumped from 95 for one to 159 for six, but Brendan Nash (40 not out) and Daren Powell (27) eased the nerves by adding 48.Trinidad and Tobago retained control of their contest against Leeward Islands in Anguilla, despite a career-best 5 for 88 by fast bowler Bront Defreitas. The brothers Ganga were the stars as first Daren shephered the innings with an unbeaten 96 and then Sherwin bagged two wickets at the death to leave Leewards struggling at 142 for 4, only 12 runs ahead. Defreitas had helped Leewards claw back into the match after T&T were sitting pretty at 292 for 3 overnight. But Daren Ganga stayed firm and held one end together to help his team secure a sizeable 130-run lead. Leeward responded well initially; Keiran Powell (40) and Runako Morton (72) made useful contributions. But a double-burst from Sherwin Ganga in a space of five runs meant T&T remained the favourites for a win going into the fourth day.
