Steve Cooper could emerge as late candidate to replace Moyes at West Ham

It is believed a heavily praised manager could "emerge" as a late contender to replace David Moyes at West Ham, with the tactician's future still uncertain.

Moyes deal expiring as West Ham fans call for change

Moyes' tenure has been the best of any West Ham manager in recent memory, with the Scotsman securing European qualification in each of his full campaigns whilst also helping them to their first major trophy since the 1980s last year.

West Ham want proven Moyes replacement as Steidten takes to South America

The Scotsman is out of contract at the end of the season.

ByEmilio Galantini Feb 27, 2024

West Ham's Conference League triumph in Prague will live long in the memories of many supporters, but a large section of the Hammers fan base now also believe the time is right for change.

There have been some complaints over West Ham's dogged style of play, with their league form since 2022 not exactly proving imperious. West Ham found themselves in a relegation battle last season and it took them nearly two months to win their first game of 2024.

West Ham chiefs have reportedly been assessing alternatives to Moyes, although the Scotsman stated last week that a new contract is already on the table for him.

"I've had really good conversations with the owners, with David Sullivan and Karren Brady," said Moyes on signing a potential new contract.

"There's a contract there for me and I'm the one deciding I want to wait until the end of the season. There are plenty of reasons [to wait]. I've got to make sure it's the right thing for the club, for me and my family. I've spoken to the board. I've had a fabulous four years. We'll sort it out but I'm happy to wait."

According to various reports, West Ham are after a proven manager if they're to part company with Moyes, but one man who could come into the fold is ex-Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper.

Cooper could "emerge" as West Ham candidate

Despite eventually being handed his P45, Cooper was praised for his "10/10" job at the City Ground last year as the Welshman steered Forest away from relegation. Cooper had to deal with a bloated squad among other issues but managed to keep them in Europe's most sought-after division, and he's now a free agent who's ready-available for hire.

Journalist Dean Jones has now told GiveMeSport that he's not in the equation right now, but if other options fail, Cooper could emerge as a candidate to succeed Moyes at West Ham.

“At the moment, I don't think Steve Cooper is going to be in that conversation, but I can see why people would expect him to be," said Jones.

“Perhaps further down the line, if they were to be looking at options and they weren't falling into place, I think he could emerge as an option."

ESPN pundit now urges Arsenal star to leave and can’t believe he hasn’t

ESPN pundit Steve Nicol has urged one Arsenal star to pack up and leave the club, despite manager Mikel Arteta's praise and real admiration for the player.

Arsenal back on track as they chase first title in 20 years

The Gunners are back on the right path in the Premier League after a mid-season damp patch, beating Jurgen Klopp's table-topping Liverpool 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium last weekend.

The result both jolts their title rivals and moves Arsenal within two points of top spot, currently taken by the Merseysiders, but they'll also face stiff competition from Man City who've recently welcomed back both Erling Haaland and Kevin de Bruyne from their respective injury layoffs.

Arteta's side next face off against West Ham at the London Stadium this weekend, a fixture which brings plenty of challenges with it, and their London rivals have got the better of them already this season.

Nevertheless, as Arsenal's fortunes take a turn for the better, there is reason for supporters to feel confident going into their clash across the capital. One man who is very unlikely to take part, though, is former number one goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale – who has watched on as his spot is taken by 2023 summer signing David Raya.

Despite there arguably being little between the Spaniard and Ramsdale in terms of shot-stopping capability, the former has proved himself a more adept ball player, which has unfortunately relegated his teammate to the bench.

Nicol urges Ramsdale to leave Arsenal

Called "exceptional" by Arteta, the manager still rates him highly, but with Euro 2024 just around the corner, it's now looking more 50/50 as to whether he'll get the nod by Gareth Southgate for England.

As a result, ESPN's Nicol told Highbury Squad that Ramsdale should pack up and quit Arsenal and can't believe he hasn't already done just that.

“I absolutely still believe that the Ramsdale, Raya thing was absolutely wrong," said Nicol on the decision to axe Ramsdale in favour of Raya.

"I don’t think Raya has been any better than Ramsdale whatsoever in goal. Can he ping a ball 30 yards wide to the right or left better? Maybe he can. But I tell you what, the guy’s made, particularly early on, a lot of mistakes. And I guess that stubbornness that Arteta has is why he never made any changes.

cody-gakpo-aaron-ramsdale-liverpool-opinion

“And how Ramsdale’s still at the club is beyond me. I find it interesting. I watch Ramsdale on the sideline. And he always seems to be behind his team. He’s always still shouting, watching the game. The majority of players I played with, if we were sat on the bench, we’d be counting the pigeons in the roof, never mind watching the game. But when you see Ramsdale, he’s into it. He wants his team to win. He wants his players to win, he wants Raya to make saves.

“I mean, what a guy he must be in the dressing room. But at the same time, come the end of the season, he’s going to have to go, I may be a good guy, but where’s my career. He shouldn’t be sat on his backside on the bench. If I’m him, I’m out the door.”

The 25-year-old has made 88 appearances in all competitions since joining Arsenal from Bournemouth, keeping 32 clean sheets in that time and conceding 98 goals (Transfermarkt).

Newcastle weighing up offer for highly-rated Rennes ace Desire Doue

Newcastle United are set to submit a bid for a highly-rated player whose "name is on everyone's lips" at his current club, according to a new transfer update from abroad.

Newcastle transfer news

A plethora of names have emerged as potential transfer targets for Magpies this month, as Eddie Howe looks to resurrect a season that is threatening to peter out. One player who has been linked with a move to Newcastle is Everton midfielder Amadou Onana, who is seen as someone who could make up for the absence of the injured Joelinton, with the Brazilian expected to be missing for many months. Similarly, Bournemouth's Philip Billing is also seen as an option in that area of the pitch, should he wish to leave the Cherries this month.

Meanwhile, Lazio star Alessio Romagnoli is the latest defender to be backed to join the Magpies, as Howe looks to bolster his options there, amid rumours of a move for Sporting CP ace Goncalo Inacio. In terms of attacking additions, VfB Stuttgart's Serhou Guirassy is considered a target, with the Portuguese continuing to enjoy an excellent season, scoring 17 goals in just 14 Bundesliga appearances in 2023/24 to date.

On the flip side, Kieran Trippier has been strongly linked with a shock move to Bayern Munich before the end of the January transfer window, while Callum Wilson is wanted by Atletico Madrid.

Newcastle readying Desire Doue move

According to a new update from L'Equipe [via Get French Football News on X], Newcastle are expected to submit a bid for Rennes midfielder Desire Doue before the end of the month, with Borussia Dortmund also interested in snapping him up.

desire-doue-newcastle-transfer-news-opinion-premier-league

A fellow update on their website claims that "Newcastle and Dortmund have both sought information in recent days to understand the potential grounds of signing the 18-year-old before submitting an offer later in the window".

Doue, who doesn't have a weak foot, appears to be a player of enormous potential, and can play as a central midfielder, attacking midfielder or second striker, so it is exciting to see Newcastle in the race to acquire his signature in January, acting as a long-term signing who could reach great heights over time.

At just 18, the Frenchman has already made 55 appearances for Rennes, scoring six goals and registering two assists in that time, while back in 2022, Breaking The Lines said of him:

"Desire Doue is the name on everyone’s lips on the streets of Rennes. Rivers of praise and attention have been steadily flowing since his goal against Brest on August 31, when he became the first player born in 2005 to score in all five of the major European leagues."

Doue has already won one cap for France's Under-21s, despite his tender years, and his potential as a player means that Newcastle may do all they can to beat Dortmund to his signing.

Long-term planning at St James' Park is essential, and the attacking midfielder could be seen as someone who can be a poster boy for the future, making this one to watch in the final weeks of the window.

Botafogo goleia o Moto Club e avança à segunda fase da Copa do Brasil

Sai, zica!

The club will now aim to end the season on a high as they face Nottingham Forest in their final game of the campaign on May 19 at Turf Moor.

Tyrone Mings injury recovery hits setback as Aston Villa problems mount

Aston Villa have lost a bit of momentum over their last two games and Unai Emery has now been handed a worrying injury update on one of his star men, according to an expert in the subject.

Aston Villa look to January as form stalls

On a crisp night at Old Trafford, Aston Villa surrendered a comfortable two-goal lead to lose out 3-2 at Manchester United, as Emery's men looked lost in the second half despite their incredible start to the Premier League campaign.

Although well on track to finish in the Champions League slots, a loss against the Red Devils coupled with a draw at home to Sheffield United has left the Villans in a position where they have to fight past their first minor blip this term; however, the January transfer window will offer up a great opportunity to add more strength in depth to their talented squad.

Aston Villa now move to sign new £17m "assist machine" for Emery

He could be set to leave his current employers in 2024…

BySean Markus Clifford Dec 24, 2023

Bolstering across the front looks to have become a priority for Aston Villa with the mid-season window around the corner, and reports suggest that Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho is a player of interest who they believe they can acquire for between £5-10 million. The Nigeria international is out of contract at the King Power Stadium in the summer of 2024. At the same time, RB Leipzig attacker Timo Werner is also on the radar in the West Midlands.

Injury worries could also tempt Emery into trying to recruit reinforcements after it emerged that Lucas Digne is potentially set for a spell on the sidelines after hurting himself in his side's defeat at Old Trafford. Now, the Spaniard could be set for some further bad news regarding the availability of one of his key men who has been out with a long-term injury.

Aston Villa injury update – Tyrone Mings

Speaking to Aston Villa News, injury expert Dr Rajpal Brar has indicated that long-time Aston Villa absentee Tyrone Mings' injury is "more significant than previously thought" as the England international continues to battle back from a serious ACL issue.

Tyrone Mings' injury history at Aston Villa (Transfermarkt)

Injury

Season and time absent

Calf injury

2019/20 – 5 days out

Muscle strain

2019/20 – 22 days out

ACL tear

2023/24 – 198 days and counting

Brar told the outlet: "Firstly, I just want to say how glad I am to see Mings being so open and candid with his recovery, the bad and the good. This is oftentimes what fans don’t see and don’t realise when players through go major injuries so any time a player shows that side, it makes them that much more human to fans."

tyrone-mings-aston-villa-unai-emery-ollie-watkins

As for recovery, a key piece of information is that the injury looks to have been more significant than previously thought so the timeline will be stretched out a bit. He’s still in the relatively early phases with mobility work and light strengthening."

Having made just one appearance this campaign, the former Bournemouth man, who was previously labelled "fantastic" by old boss Steven Gerrard, looks like he will be out for some time to come as the Villans look to maintain their push for Champions League football.

'Both goals were nothing' – Alexi Lalas suggests Lionel Messi's 'magical moments' in MLS are being overhyped after seeing Inter Miami star keep up 'torrid pace' against Nashville

Alexi Lalas says that Lionel Messi's goals against Nashville were unremarkable finishes but his consistency has made Inter Miami "must see TV".

Lalas says Messi double "nothing"Consistency of performance real proof of "greatness"Messi on pace for "historic" production levelsWHAT HAPPENED?

The Argentine superstar was on target twice and laid on another for Sergio Busquets as The Herons swept to a 3-1 win over Nashville on Sunday.

But while former USMNT star Lalas described Messi's brace as routine, he added that the sheer consistency and productivity of the World Cup winner is providing MLS with the excitement previously associated with his performances with Barcelona and Argentina.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT ALEXI LALAS SAID

“He is incredible," Lalas said on his State of the Union podcast. "And this was such an interesting game because the goals that we have now started to associate him with MLS, we've been doing it for years with Barcelona and Argentina, we're associating with these magical moments.

"And yet both of these goals were nothing. If it wasn't Messi, we'd be like, yeah, okay, whatever, just scored a penalty and then a broken play that he did finish off.

"But, the greatness is in that Messi is doing this and he's doing it consistently and for this team in pink, each and every time they go out, they must see TV. And more often than not, they are delivering. And individually, when it comes to Messi right now, he is on a torrid pace and if he were to keep this up, we would see a historic production."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Messi has racked up nine goals and five assists in just 724 minutes of action this year and has helped raise Miami to a level where they are clear favourites for the MLS Cup, having previously been among the league's also-rans.

But, as Lalas also alluded too, the key will be keeping the great man fit as a series of minor injuries have hampered his game time since arriving in Florida.

Vijay slams brisk hundred in drawn game

M Vijay showed sparkling form, hitting a brisk century, while KL Rahul broke a lean run with a half-century on the final day of the India’s tour match

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Dec-20181:18

‘Australian conditions suit my game’ – Vijay

A solid top-order show from Murali Vijay and KL Rahul headlined the final day of the drawn encounter between India and Cricket Australia XI. Vijay demolished an inexperienced host bowling attack as he made a 132-ball 129 laden with 16 fours and five sixes, while Rahul hit form with a 98-ball 62, following a string of low scores.Australia batsmen made the Indian bowlers toil at the start of the day, as they amassed 544 from 151.1 overs, after beginning the day 6 for 356. Harry Nielsen, who added 44 runs to his overnight score to bring up 100, was dismissed by Virat Kohli in the 21st over of the day. Aaron Hardie’s 86, and three 30-plus contributions from the tail, helped the hosts take a 186-run lead.In reply, Rahul reached his half-century shortly after tea in the 25th over, while Vijay was batting on 33. There was a short break in play in the 30th over, when a grimacing Vijay sought medical attention to his right thumb, and he resumed playing with a bandage on the finger. In the very next over, D’Arcy Short got the much-needed breakthrough as he dismissed Rahul for 62.Overcoming the pain in his thumb, Vijay set off to entertain the sizeable crowd at the SCG once he crossed 50. He destroyed the young Western Australian offspinner Jake Carder for 26 runs in an over, including three fours and two sixes, to move from 74 to 100. He smashed three more fours and two sixes before falling to Daniel Fallins in the 44th over, following which the teams shook hands with 15 minutes left to play.Vijay had been recalled for the Australia tour after losing his place due to poor form in the last two away Tests against England earlier this year. He impressed in a county stint with Essex and his first-class form was enough to get him picked for the Tests. Speaking about his comeback after the match, Vijay said his focus, even when he was out of the team, was on making sure he was always ready for the top level.”You’ve got to find ways to be in that positive frame of mind, where even if you’re not part of the team, you’ve still got to make sure you keep your work ethics to the top level, and once you get a chance, you should be ready to go,” he said. “That’s my basic funda. Once you play international (cricket), you’ve got to handle responsibility well. Whether it is four years or your first year, it’s about taking the responsibility and doing it for your team. Age doesn’t matter here.”
