Brett D'Oliveira sparks Lightning collapse as Worcestershire seal rare win

Jos Buttler suffered disappointment in his first match since being appointed England’s new white-ball captain after an astonishing Lancashire Lightning batting collapse in a 29-run defeat against bottom-placed Worcestershire Rapids at New Road.Eoin Morgan’s replacement was dropped before he had scored but then smashed 42 off 29 balls with three sixes and two fours and he and Phil Salt plundered 85 from 8.2 overs in pursuit of a 179 target. The Lightning looked well on course to seal the victory that would have booked their place in the quarter-finals.But then Club Captain Brett D’Oliveira’s career-best T20 return of 4-20 was the centre part of a dramatic reversal in fortunes for the Lightning.Ten wickets went down for 64 runs in 11.1 overs to leave Lancashire’s hopes of qualifying for the last eight now hanging in the balance heading into their final game with Birmingham Bears on Sunday. It was a mixture of poor strokeplay and some inspired bowling as Worcestershire, the 2018 winners, celebrated their second win of the campaign. The Rapids made two changes with Jake Libby and Dillon Pennington replacing Ed Pollock and Adam Finch. They were put into bat and Libby and D’Oliveira gave the Rapids a solid start in contrast to their trend this summer of losing too many wickets in the powerplay.Their opening stand was worth 49 in 5.1 overs before Libby (18) skied Luke Wood to mid-wicket.D’Oliveira raced onto 33 before he fell to a catch at long on against the bowling of Luke Wells.Rapids captain Moeen Ali looked in good touch and a six over mid-wicket off Wood sailed out of the ground. He had made 31 from only 17 deliveries and added 51 in 5.2 overs with Colin Munro before the pair departed in successive overs.Moeen picked out cover off Wells and then Munro, drilled Matt Parkinson straight to long on.But then recent signing, Kashif Ali, provided some acceleration with 27 off 15 balls including two sixes before he perished at deep mid wicket off Tom Hartley.Ed Barnard (11) was caught at mid-off but then Gareth Roderick produced the shot of the innings, a six over fine leg off Gleeson. When the Lightning batted, Mitchell Stanley bowled a superb first over with plenty of pace.Buttler was fortunate to survive when he edged the second legitimate bowler from the 21-year-old with Moeen spilling a straightforward chanceHe managed only two runs off his first seven balls but then smashed Stanley for six over wide mid on and then a scoop shot against the same bowler brought another maximum. The powerplay yielded 61 runs and Buttler looked set for a major contribution until he failed to connect properly with a full-toss from D’Oliveira and holed out to backward square leg.It was the start of a dramatic change-around in fortunes for the Lightning.Steven Croft was caught behind off Barnard and then D’Oliveira dismissed Salt, 44, and Dane Vila with successive balls before Tim David holed out to long on in his next over.Moeen came into the attack and removed Danny Lamb and Luke Wells in successive overs before Pat Brown’s two wickets helped to polish off the innings.

Watch out Madueke: Chelsea chasing £67m "monster" who’d shine with Neto

Since Todd Boehly and Clearlake took over Chelsea, the Blues have signed a pile of wingers in an attempt to freshen up their wide options in attack. Chelsea fans have been blessed in the past with Eden Hazard, Willian, Pedro, Arjen Robben and Joe Cole, all players that could swing the game in their favour with a moment of magic.

Raheem Sterling, Mykhailo Mudryk, Noni Madueke and Jadon Sancho have all been signed in the past two seasons, for a combined €221.20m (£184.4m), according to Transfermarkt, which will rise to over £200m when Sancho’s loan becomes a permanent next summer, for around £20m.

But perhaps the best of the bunch is Pedro Neto, who signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers this summer and has started brightly at Stamford Bridge.

Pedro Neto's record at Chelsea

Neto has already made 15 appearances since joining the Blues this summer, scoring three goals, providing three assists, and totalling 817 minutes played for the club so far.

The 24-year-old Portugal international has played on both the left and right wing for Enzo Maresca already this season and suits the Italian’s system extremely well, who likes to get his wingers 1v1 in high and wide areas, as a key focus for chance creation.

Neto’s ability as a two-way winger, to cut inside and let fly (as we saw against Arsenal last weekend), dink a clever inswinging cross into the box, but also that ability to beat his man for pace and go to the byline, makes the former Wolves man a nightmare for defenders.

But Chelsea seem to be in the market for a new striker and could be entering the race for a “monster” as dubbed by Ben Mattinson, who could really take Neto to the next level, and allow him to unlock his best skillsets.

Chelsea's search for a striker

According to reports from Spain, Chelsea look like the latest name to enter the race for Sporting CP striker, Viktor Gyokeres. Reports from the Daily Star state Gyokeres has a release clause of around €100m (£83m), but offers could be accepted for close to €80m (£67m).

Other big clubs reportedly interested include Manchester United and Arsenal. The Red Devils could prove to be an appealing project for the Sweden international, with his Sporting boss, Ruben Amorim, making the move to United recently.

Gyokeres has made 68 appearances since joining Sporting from Coventry in 2023, scoring 66 goals, providing 19 assists, and totalling 5,695 minutes played. If Chelsea are able to snatch the 26-year-old talisman, it could make for a great pairing with Neto, allowing both players to thrive.

Neto & Gyokeres combination

The prolific Sporting striker stands at 6 foot 1, has a stocky build, and uses his body well to win duels and protect the ball in the box. This level of box dominance is something the Chelsea squad lack, meaning the likes of Neto are unable to use their crossing qualities as often as they may like.

Chelsea’s current striking options are Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku, both of whom offer some excellent traits, but not the box occupancy and aerial dominance that Chelsea need in the squad, in order to get the best from Neto.

Jackson has made 12 appearances this season, scoring six goals and providing three assists in 901 minutes played. Nkunku has made 17 appearances in all competitions, scoring ten goals already, providing one assist, and totalling 688 minutes played.

You can instantly see the creative numbers Neto brings to the table, making 1.28 crosses into the penalty area per 90, 1.54 passes into the penalty area, and 2.56 key passes per 90. This mixed with the box occupancy of Gyokeres (shown by his whopping 9.46 penalty area touches per 90) would get the best of both players.

Jackson, in comparison, has only managed 4.79 penalty area touches per 90 this season, and has only won 23.8% of his aerial duels per 90 so far this season, showing the need for a more powerful striker alongside him in the squad. Whilst the 23-year-old Senegal international offers a lot for the Blues, Gyokeres would bring a more powerful body type needed upfront.

One man who could suffer from a knock-on effect of this deal would be Madueke, who has started the season in relatively good form under his new boss.

How Madueke could be affected by Gyokeres signing

Madueke could find himself sidelined if Chelsea acquire a box-dominant striker, as Neto could be moved over to the right wing in order to unleash the full utility of his creative toolkit.

The 22-year-old English winger has made 13 appearances so far this season for Maresca’s side, scoring five goals in his 890 minutes played. He has been an important part of the Italians’ system, being a direct 1v1 winger, who looks to beat his man, but also works hard defensively and uses that athleticism to get up and down the pitch.

As good as Madueke has been, one thing he is often criticised for, is his final ball, and the quality of his crosses when he creates opportunities to put the ball in the box, having averaged just 0.21 crosses into the penalty area per 90, across the last 365 days.

By putting Neto on the right instead, it would allow the Portuguese winger the ability to go both ways, cutting inside on his stronger left foot to put inswingers and clever passes into the box, and keep defenders guessing by beating them for speed down the outside.

That would certainly be a recipe for success with Gyokeres involved, even if it means handing Madueke a reduced role.

Imagine him & Ampadu: 49ers could seal "special" Rodon repeat for Leeds

Leeds United are not exactly where they want to be as they head into the final international break of the year, as they are outside of the automatic promotion places.

However, the Whites are within touching distance of both Sheffield United and Sunderland, in the top two, and are still in contention to secure automatic promotion to the Premier League at the second time of asking.

An impressive defence has been at the heart of their success so far this season in the Championship, as only Sheffield United and Burnley (seven) have conceded fewer goals than Leeds (nine).

Only the Blades (ten) have kept more clean sheets than Daniel Farke’s side (nine), which illustrates how impressive the West Yorkshire outfit’s defensive unit has been.

This has not been down to consistently exceptional goalkeeping from Illan Meslier, however, as the Frenchman has, actually, conceded 1.01 more goals than expected based on xG and made one error that directly led to a goal – the own goal against Sunderland.

The bulk of the credit must, therefore, go to the back four and central defender Joe Rodon has been at the heart of their defensive strength since the start of last season.

Leeds United's Joe Rodon masterclass

Farke swooped to sign the Wales international on loan from Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2023, in a move that turned out to be a masterstroke.

Rodon featured in 43 of the club’s 46 regular season matches in the Championship and all three of their play-off games in the 2023/24 campaign, starting 45 of those games, which shows how important he was to the German head coach.

The Spurs loanee helped the team to keep 17 clean sheets in the regular season games, thanks – in part – to his dominant defensive work at the back.

As you can see in the table above, Rodon won the majority of his duels on the deck and in the air, whilst rarely being dribbled past by opposition players.

Leeds then wanted to make the deal permanent and reportedly paid £10m to do so during the summer transfer window, with Archie Gray moving to Tottenham going the other way.

Rodon actually endured a difficult start to the current campaign, with an error that led to a shot, an error that led to a goal, and a penalty giving away, but he has steadied himself in recent weeks.

The Welshman has started all 15 of the club’s Championship games and won 50% of his duels, helping his side to keep nine clean sheets, this term.

The 49ers could now repeat the blinder they played with Rodon, who the club had on loan before signing permanently, by securing a deal for Joe Rothwell next year.

Leeds United's stance on Joe Rothwell

Speaking to Leeds United News recently, journalist Graeme Bailey claimed that the club “would like to keep” the central midfielder beyond his current loan.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The Englishman is currently on a season-long loan from Premier League side Bournemouth and there is no option to make the move permanent in next summer’s transfer window.

When asked about the possibility of a permanent move for the midfielder, Bailey said: “It would depend on Leeds’ ambition when they get promoted. A very good squad player, he can play a plethora of positions as well. He’d be one they would like to keep, but they’d need to get promoted.”

The reporter added that it would be “difficult” for the Whites to bring him back to Elland Road if they fail to secure promotion back to the Premier League this season.

Rothwell’s contract with the Cherries does not expire until the summer of 2026 and this means that they can still demand a fee for his services next summer, and will not be forced into a deal.

The 29-year-old midfielder, whose skill in pre-season was hailed as “pretty special” by LUTV pundit Tony Dorigo, has stepped up for Leeds this season, amid injuries to Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev, and has shown enough to suggest that he would be a fantastic permanent addition.

Joe Rothwell could be Joe Rodon 2.0

The English maestro could follow in Rodon’s footsteps by enjoying a brilliant time on loan with the club before joining permanently the following summer.

Rothwell has been starting regularly alongside Ao Tanaka, in the absence of Ampadu and Gruev, and caught the eye with his impressive performances in the middle of the park.

He has started seven of his 15 appearances in the division for the Whites and provided a calming and creative presence in midfield for Farke’s side.

As you can see in the table above, Rothwell has been reliable in possession, with his 90% pass accuracy, and offered incisive play in the final third, with a whopping 21 chances created in seven starts.

Captain Ampadu is currently due to be out until January with a knee injury and the Wales international could form a strong partnership with the Englishman, when both players are fit.

Ampadu is more of a defensive presence in midfield, rather than offering a lot of creativity, and he could be the holding player of the two, which would allow the Bournemouth loanee to push on and make things happen in the final third.

In the Championship this season, the ex-Chelsea man has averaged 3.5 tackles and interceptions per game and a duel success rate of 69%, whilst only making 0.7 key passes per game.

Whereas, Rothwell has only made 1.2 tackles and interceptions per game, winning 50% of his duels, and this suggests that they would complement each other well, with a good blend of defensive and progressive qualities.

Leeds sold a "magician" who's now worth more than Rutter & Summerville

The former Leeds United star’s value has soared since his move from Elland Road.

The 49ers must, then, ensure that they can strike a permanent deal, whether that is in January or next summer, for the midfielder to make him Rodon 2.0 for Leeds.

Arsenal must regret signing high-earning flop who’s now worth just £8m

Arsenal’s dealings in the transfer market have allowed Mikel Arteta’s side to challenge for the Premier League title over the last couple of years, coming within touching distance of ending their two-decade wait for a title.

Signings of players such as Gabriel and William Saliba have undoubtedly improved the backline, helping the Gunners register the best defensive record of any side in England’s top-flight last season.

Arteta’s men only conceded 29 times in their 38 matches, but it wasn’t enough as they finished two points behind eventual champions Manchester City, with hope of going one better this season.

This summer saw the club bolster their defence even further with the addition of Riccardo Calafiori, with the Italian scoring a screamer against Pep Guardiola’s side just a couple of games into his Arsenal career.

However, not all of the Gunners’ recent additions have been a success, as to be expected, but some more than others have ended up costing the club a pretty penny in recent times.

Arsenal’s transfer window in summer 2019

The summer of 2019 saw the arrival of the aforementioned Saliba from French side Marseille, with the defender now looking to be worth every penny of his £27m fee.

However, the hierarchy also completed a £72m deal for winger Nicolas Pepe from Lille – a club-record deal at the time, but a transfer that would prove to be a complete disaster.

The Ivorian would only make 122 appearances in North London, scoring just 27 times – rapidly falling down the pecking order after Arteta’s arrival just a few months into Pepe’s time in England’s capital.

He would subsequently depart the Emirates on a free transfer last summer, ending his four-year tenure – spending his final campaign on loan at Nice before having his contract terminated.

David Luiz was just another player who was signed, in an attempt to provide a steady experienced option to prevent the club from sliding down the Premier League table.

However, the Brazilian’s move would also be a disaster, only making 73 appearances – which included a torrid display against Manchester City which saw him score an own goal before being sent off for a second bookable offence.

Despite the lack of impact by the aforementioned duo, there’s another addition who’s failed to impress, often struggling with injury issues at the Emirates.

Kieran Tierney’s market value in 2024

After joining the Gunners for £25m from Celtic under Unai Emery, there were high expectations on left-back Kieran Tierney to be a success in North London, but unfortunately, injuries have plagued his stint at the club.

The 27-year-old – who presenter Adam Keys described as “phenomenal” – had a strong start to life at the Emirates, making 24 appearances in his debut campaign, but his injury record has constantly plagued him in recent years.

Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney.

His standstill in development saw the club bolster the department with the additions of Calafiori and Oleksandr Zinchenko over the past couple of seasons, with the Scotsman facing a huge task in regaining his place.

The £110k-per-week earner spent last season on loan at LaLiga outfit Real Sociedad but suffered the same fate with his injury issues restricting him to just 20 appearances in the league.

As a result, the full-back has seen his value take a nose dive, with Tierney now only valued at £8m as per Transfermarkt – a drop of £17m after his transfer to Arteta’s side five years ago.

Given his lack of impact due to his fitness problems, the Spaniard could look to offload him in the coming months to allow for added investment in his first-team squad.

Arsenal'sKieranTierneyreacts

There’s no denying the defender’s talents, but unfortunately, his setbacks have become too frequent, which could see the hierarchy cash in to avoid losing any more money on their £25m investment, which they must now regret given what has happened since his move to London.

Western Australia quicks combined to bundle out Redbacks for 128

Western Australia 2 for 42 trail South Australia 128 (Richardson 3-22, Morris 3-25)Jhye Richardson snared three wickets as South Australia were skittled for 128 before Cameron Green helped Western Australia overcome some early batting wobbles in the rain-affected Sheffield Shield clash. The entire morning session on Wednesday was washed out by rain, but WA made up for lost time when play finally began by producing a devastating bowling performance on a juicy wicket.Richardson, who suffered a back spasm during the previous Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania, finished with 3 for 22 from 11.3 overs while Lance Morris took 3 for 25 from eight overs to put WA in the box seat. Jake Carder top scored for SA with 37, but no other batter was able to pass 20.In reply to SA’s paltry total, WA were in strife at 2 for 17 after opener Sam Whiteman fell for a duck and Shaun Marsh was dismissed for 11.But Green and Cameron Bancroft safely guided the Warriors to 2-42 before bad light stopped play late in the day. Green is vying for a spot in the Ashes and is keen for a big knock after returning scores of 9, 7, 13 and 5 in his four most recent knocks. Those low scores came after he scored 106 against South Australia in the Shield opener last month. Richardson could also be in the frame for a reserve fast-bowling slot.”We’re definitely still in the game,” Carder said. “It was nice to get some time out in the middle. I was disappointed that I didn’t go on with it. When I got out I was the only recognised batsmen left, so it was disappointing.”SA openers Jake Weatherald and Henry Hunt both fell cheaply to leave the Redbacks at 2 for 23. But the biggest collapse came after the Redbacks had moved to 2 for 41, with the visitors losing 3 for 0 in a catastrophic period, which included the loss of dangerman Travis Head for 9 who gloved a pull down the leg side against Cameron Gannon.Alex Carey was then run out by a direct hit from D’Arcy Short before Jake Lehmann fended a short delivery first ball to the keeper”We won a good toss today,” Gannon said. “There can be pressure on a bowling group to take wickets when you see a green surface like that. When you’ve got people like Jhye Richardson and Lance Morris bowling rockets, and some control with myself, Joel [Paris] and Greeny at the other end, it’s a pretty well balanced attack.”

Raheem Sterling is the flop signing of the season! England outcast has no future at Arsenal OR Chelsea – and his days in the Premier League could be numbered

The former Manchester City star has been little more than a spare part at the Emirates Stadium, and his career is now in real danger of fizzling out

"It’s a perfect fit for myself to be at a football club like this," Raheem Sterling said after joining Arsenal on loan from Chelsea on the final day of the 2024 summer transfer window. At the time, it wasn't easy to disagree. After all, Sterling was reuniting with former Manchester City assistant Mikel Arteta, who helped Pep Guardiola bring the very best out of the winger at the Etihad Stadium between 2017 and 2019.

Arteta has also followed a similar tactical blueprint to Guardiola since his appointment as Arsenal head coach, so it felt like the ideal move for Sterling to rediscover his best form after two largely frustrating seasons at Chelsea. To quote the infamous Gary Neville meme: "This was the no-brainer. This was the banker, this was the one that couldn't fail."

But fail it has, and spectacularly so. We are now past the midway point of the 2024-25 season, and Sterling has been restricted to just seven starts for Arsenal. He's only scored once, in a Carabao Cup third-round win over Bolton Wanderers, and has a solitary goal contribution to his name in the Premier League.

As such, it's already safe to say that Sterling has no future at Arsenal, or indeed Chelsea. Sterling's days in the English top flight could well be numbered, too, because, in his current state, the 30-year-old is simply not good enough to mix it at the very highest level.

  • Getty/GOAL

    Premature praise

Sterling was, unsurprisingly, omitted from Lee Carsley's first England squad in early September, which was actually a good thing. The international break afforded him two weeks to get up to speed at Arsenal's London Colney training base, and Arteta was impressed by his application.

"He looks great. He's got a lot of energy, a smile on his face and he's at it. He wants to prove a point, and when someone's got that in his belly you sense it straight away," Arteta said at a press conference before Arsenal's short trip to Tottenham for the north London derby.

"Obviously I don't need to know anything else about his quality and what he can bring to the team. In his personal life a lot of things have changed, but with the player I was really surprised. The first call I had with him I knew in the first 10 seconds we have to bring him because he really wanted it. That was my only question mark: 'what stage is he at in his career?' [But] after 10 seconds, I knew already before the next questions that we needed him here.

"What I see is hunger. He's a player that wants to play every minute of every game. When that's not the case, he's not happy. He wants to play every single day and I see that. His commitment and the level of energy that he's bringing to the team is a big boost. You can feel it walking through the door. We are better with him. He's going to make us better."

Arteta really should have listened to his initial gut feeling. A lot had changed for Sterling, and not for the better. A few encouraging training performances should not have prompted such a glowing appraisal, and the Arsenal boss was soon made to regret it.

    'Stunk the place out'

Despite Arteta's big billing, Sterling was only given brief cameos in Arsenal's 1-0 win at Tottenham and their subsequent draw with Atalanta in the Champions League, before being left on the bench for the duration of a 2-2 draw with Manchester City. The Chelsea loanee's full debut finally came in the Carabao Cup on September 25 – an occasion he marked with a goal and an assist as the Gunners thrashed Bolton 5-1 at the Emirates Stadium.

But that performance against a mediocre League One club counted for little. He subsequently had to make do with a 16-minute run-out in Arsenal's 4-2 win over Leicester three days later, and was an unused substitute again as Arteta's side kick-started their Champions League campaign with a 2-0 home victory against Paris Saint-Germain.

It wasn't until October 5 that Sterling got his first Premier League start, but that was against a newly-promoted Southampton team still looking for their first win. Sterling squandered his chance to stake a claim for a regular role, too, losing possession 10 times before being taken off on the hour mark with the scoreline locked at 1-1. Gabriel Martinelli gave Arsenal much more impetus in attack after replacing him, and the hosts ended up winning 3-1.

Things got even worse for Sterling after that. Between October 19 and December 14, he would only see 60 minutes of Premier League action, leading Stan Collymore to label him a "massive disappointment". The former Liverpool striker added to : "He’s stunk the place out so far. He’s an experienced player who has won everything there is to win, he was expected to push the dressing room up another level and he hasn’t done that."

    Permanent decline

Before Arsenal's 0-0 draw at home to Everton last month, Arteta attempted to explain Sterling's lack of game time, insisting it wasn't down to "tactical reasons". He instead suggested that Sterling was an indirect victim of a defensive injury crisis that had seen the likes of Takehiro Tomiyasu, Ben White, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Riccardo Calafiori sidelined.

"It's been tough and very difficult for me as well to accept that I haven't given him more," Arteta said. "When he hasn't started the games, 90 percent of the subs that I make is related to saving minutes or because of injuries or avoiding injuries. I would like him to play much more as I think he can impact the team in a very good way."

The Spaniard added on Sterling's mindset: "He's very good in the dressing room and is absolutely desperate to play. He had this very important role [at Man City], impacting every game, and suddenly you are in this position for a while. Not just here but at Chelsea as well. So it's always very difficult and I feel a lot of sympathy for players when they are in this moment. Hopefully we can change it."

And therein lies the rub. This is not the same Sterling who posted over 20 goal contributions in all competitions across six successive seasons for City, a bona fide match-winner capable of embarrassing even the best defenders in the world. We only saw glimpses of those qualities at Chelsea, where he had similar issues holding down a place in the team, and now he appears to be in a permanent decline.

    State of play

Arteta has done his best to shield Sterling from criticism, but there is no escaping the truth. He hasn't played much because Arsenal have a host of better wingers to call upon, it's as simple as that.

Bukayo Saka is the Gunners' first-choice man on the right flank, while Martinelli and Leandro Trossard have been preferred on the left. Sterling also operated as a false nine at times for City, to great effect, but he has not had a look-in through the middle either because of Kai Havertz's reinvention as a No.9.

When Arteta has a full-strength attack available, there is no room for Sterling. The former Liverpool and City star is no longer equipped to match the explosiveness of Saka, the unpredictability of Martinelli, or the guile of Trossard, and that has been painfully evident whenever he has stepped in for the Gunners.

However, all is not lost quite yet. Saka suffered a serious hamstring injury at the end of December, and back-up centre-forward Gabriel Jesus underwent surgery on a ruptured ACL earlier this week. It has been reported that both men could be out until at least the end of March, which means Sterling is likely to get more opportunities.

Sterling recovered from his own knee problem in time for Arsenal's third-round FA Cup tie against Manchester United on January 12, and ended up playing 80 minutes from the bench as the game went to extra-time. The Gunners eventually lost on penalties, but Sterling's display was a major positive; he caused the United backline some real problems and had a spring in his step for the first time since his summer move.
