Nottingham Forest hit gold selling £15m star who’s now worth less than Boly

Nottingham Forest’s development over the last few years under the ownership of Evangelos Marinakis has been nothing short of sensational, ending their 23-year exile from the Premier League.

The Greek shipping magnate has transformed the club on and off the pitch, looking unrecognisable from when he took the reins back in the summer of 2017.

Even in recent years, after the Reds secured promotion under Steve Cooper, he’s invested over £250m into new players giving the club every chance of being competitive in England’s top flight.

The City Ground is now home to numerous international stars, including £25m signing Morgan Gibbs-White who has taken his career to the next level in the East Midlands, leading to an England call-up, making him the first player since Stuart Peace to achieve the feat.

It’s a stark contrast from life under the previous ownership, with the club often posing as a laughing stock to many around the country after years of awful decisions conducted by the hierarchy.

Fawaz Al-Hasawi’s time as Nottingham Forest owner

Kuwaiti businessman Fawaz Al-Hasawi was seen as a saviour by many on Trentside after taking over the club following the tragic death of Nigel Doughty back in 2012.

The 56-year-old arrived with huge ambitions to take the club back to the Premier League within five years, but his time at the helm was a disaster, creating more problems than he solved.

He sacked manager Sean O’Driscoll during his first year in charge despite being a couple of points outside the play-offs, before appointing Alex McLeish, who would only last 40 days in the role.

Al-Hasawi would also spend big upon the appointment of club legend Pearce in 2014, but doing so in an erratic manner which broke FFP rules, with Forest enduring numerous windows under a transfer ban.

Such a period resulted in the loss of key players, dropping the Reds closer and closer to the relegation zone, with attendances dropping as low as 17,000 for some fixtures after his dismal running of the club.

The former owner had seven different managers during his five years in charge of the club, often leading to a revolving door at the City Ground – with no structure of continuity in place, leading to their decline.

His final boss during his time as owner was Mark Warburton, with the former Brentford and Rangers boss securing survival on the final day against Ipswich Town – saving the Reds from dropping into League One – potentially allowing for the success that has occurred in recent times.

Fawaz eventually sold up to now owner Marinakis in 2017, with the Greek doing unbelievable work in turning the club around into an established top-flight outfit in just a handful of years.

It’s safe to say the club conducted excellent business in offloading one talent who arrived during the ownership of Fawaz – especially considering his drop in stock over the last couple of seasons.

The player who Nottingham Forest struck gold offloading

Striker Britt Assombalonga arrived in a £5.5m deal from Peterborough in the summer of 2014, a then club-record transfer, forming an excellent partnership with Michail Antonio during that campaign.

The aforementioned pair combined for 42 goals in that Championship campaign, a year cut short for the big-money addition after his serious knee injury that kept him out for over a year.

However, the former DR Congo international would return for the 2016/17 season, which would be his final one at the City Ground, scoring 14 times and helping fend off any final-day relegation worries.

He scored two against Ipswich Town on the final day, securing a 3-0 win before departing in a £15m deal to join fellow second-tier outfit Middlesbrough – a then club-record departure.

However, his career has failed to kick on as many anticipated since his transfer to the Riverside, scoring 47 times in 161 appearances, before leaving on a free transfer at the end of his contract in 2021.

He’s since mainly featured in Turkey for various clubs, now plying his trade for second-tier side Amed SK, who joined this summer, scoring twice in his first 11 games for his new club.

As a result, his market value has plummeted to just £625k, a figure lower than current squad member Willy Boly who’s now only valued at £2m despite his run-in as a regular starter in 2023/24, which saw him make 20 Premier League appearances.

Given the finances at the time, it was a tough call to part ways with a proven goalscorer, undoubtedly taking away one of the biggest assets within the first team.

However, given his steady decline in recent years, Forest certainly made the right call in allowing him to leave, with the club in a much better place than Assombalonga in 2024.

Saved by Guehi: Crystal Palace star who won 11% duels let his team down

Oliver Glasner’s Crystal Palace have started to pick up some points, acquiring four points in their last two Premier League games.

This leaves the Eagles in 17th place, two points outside the relegation zone, after their 2-2 draw against Wolves this weekend.

Despite Wolves having 57% possession, Palace created the better chances, taking 19 shots during the game, generating four big chances, equating to 2.51 xG (expected goals). Wolves, on the other hand, generated four big chances too, but only equating to 1.53 xG.

There were some poor performances during the game for both sides, but the Palace defenders do deserve credit, as both their goals came from central defenders, with Trevoh Chalobah scoring the first in the 60th minute, and Marc Guehi scoring an equaliser in the 77th minute.

Chalobah and Guehi performances vs Wolves

The two Palace goalscorers were heavily involved in the game, not only scoring their goals but also having some big moments (both positive and negative) when defending.

Chalobah was dribbled past three times during the clash, and also made an error leading to the Wolves equaliser, making it 1-1 in the game.

Guehi has played every single game for Palace, captaining the side on all 13 occasions, and scoring two goals already this season. Chalobah, who is on loan from Chelsea, has only just secured his spot in the side, making five appearances for the Eagles so far, totalling 448 minutes played.

The Palace captain was particularly impressive, winning 100% of his ground duels, whilst making 6/8 long passes during the game, and, of course, scoring the equaliser.

But there was another Palace man who wasn’t quite as strong in the duel, only winning 11.1% of his ground duels compared to Guehi’s flawless tally.

Will Hughes' performance in numbers

Awarded a 6/10 match rating by GIVEMESPORT for his performance against Wolves, Will Hughes was a notable underperformer at Molineux on Saturday evening.

He was particularly poor in possession of the ball, losing possession 12 times, only winning one of his nine ground duels during the game (11.1% success rate), and picking up a yellow card.

This yellow card will see Hughes miss Palace’s next game when they face Fulham next week at Selhurst Park, which could see Cheick Doucoure restored to the side alongside Daichi Kamada, as Adam Wharton remains unavailable through injury.

Hughes had an 84% pass success but he completed just one of his four cross attempts and one of his three long balls. On top of that, he failed with both of his dribble attempts and was coincidentally dribbled past on two occasions.

Whilst the 29-year-old is a hard worker and puts himself about in the middle of the park, the lack of efficiency was apparent against Wolves, and this is further backed up by his metrics.

The answer for Glasner could present itself perfectly now though, as a more attack-minded midfielder such as Kamada, with creative passing and dribbling qualities, could be partnered with the duelling monster of Doucoure, to provide balance in midfield in the absence of Wharton.

A new era for Australia, an Ashes to define Root's England

After a bizarre build-up the Gabba is the scene for the opening act of a series full of unknowns

Alex Malcolm07-Dec-2021Big Picture There are always nerves and excitement on the eve of an Ashes series, but some actual cricket being played might be sweet relief to Australia and England and their fans alike after a bizarre build-up. There have been both literal clouds and thunderstorms that have hampered both teams’ preparation in Queensland following the T20 World Cup, while the figurative clouds of racism in English cricket and Tim Paine’s resignation have loomed over both teams in the lead-up.In pure cricketing terms, on paper at least this isn’t quite the mismatch it has been touted in some quarters. These are two middling teams, ranked third and fourth on the ICC Test rankings, but they diverge in many ways. One team barely plays while the other might be playing too much. Australia have played one four-Test series since January 2020, which they lost at home against an understrength India, and have not played overseas since the 2019 Ashes. England, meanwhile, are about to play in their fifth series of the calendar year having played six Tests in Sri Lanka and India and six at home against New Zealand and India again, but have won just four of those 12.For Australia, it is the beginning of a new era with Pat Cummins to lead his nation for the first-time, becoming the first Australian fast-bowling captain since 1956, while there will be a new man behind the stumps in Alex Carey. But it is the same formidable attack that won 4-0 four years ago, while David Warner, Marnus Labuschagne, and Steven Smith all loom large in home conditions.Pat Cummins and Joe Root at the launch of the men’s Ashes•Getty Images

For England, despite some of the youth in their squad, it is being seen as a legacy series for both Joe Root’s captaincy as well as their two most prolific fast bowlers in James Anderson and Stuart Broad, on their fifth and fourth tours of Australia respectively. Root lands down under in the form of his life, while the fitness of Anderson and Broad remains a question. Ben Stokes is here but has not played a competitive game of cricket since July and has not played a red-ball game since his last Test in March. However, his class and competitiveness can never be questioned. For all the unknowns, the cold reality for England is they have lost nine of their last 10 Tests in Australia without a victory. In England’s last 20 Tests in Australia, there has been one constant in the only games they haven’t lost. Alastair Cook scored 67, 235 not out, 148, 82, 189, and 244 not out in the three wins and two draws interspersed among 15 defeats. If Root is to cement his legacy as England captain it will take something equally monumental.Form guide (most recent first)

James Anderson sits out first Test with an eye on Adelaide pink-ball contest

Can captain Pat Cummins buck the bowler-leader trend?

Eyes on David Warner, but Australia's biggest challenge will be when he's gone

Joe Root: 'Ashes will define my captaincy'

In the spotlight England openers have held the key to Ashes success in Australia with Geoff Boycott, Chris Broad and Cook all having extraordinary series to help England win in 1970-71, 1986-87 and 2010-11 respectively while Michael Vaughan carved out three centuries in 2002-03 to help England avoid a series whitewash. Over to you then, Rory Burns. The left-hander proved his mettle against Australia in the 2019 Ashes series with a century at Edgbaston and two other half-centuries in the face of Australia’s pace onslaught. He started last home summer in even better touch against New Zealand but experienced diminishing returns against India, although a 153-ball 61 at Headingley helped England to a series-levelling win. Burns needs more than one hundred in this series if England are to triumph. As Vaughan proved though, even three might not be enough. The same can be said of David Warner. It is hard to get a gauge on where he currently is as a Test batter because he has played just two Tests in 23 months and was injured for both. Much has been made of the search for his partner, but Warner has had some doubters himself. The T20 World Cup proved that when he scores runs in any format Australia wins trophies. He has the capabilities of ripping the series from England’s hands in two hours on the first morning at the Gabba. But the ghosts of 2019 and Broad still linger in the mind. If both Broad and Anderson don’t play in Brisbane, that will certainly give Warner a boost. If he can give Labuschagne and Smith a platform, and Australia’s bowlers a total to defend, then the home side will be very hard to stop.Team news Australia have named their XI without much hesitation. Marcus Harris was locked into partner Warner weeks ago while the debate around Mitchell Starc and Jhye Richardson was far more vociferous in public than it was at the selection table with Starc never in any real doubt to miss out. Alex Carey was eventually named as Paine’s replacement after some deliberation about Josh Inglis. The final decision was between Travis Head and Usman Khawaja to bat in the middle-order. The selectors sided with the younger man in spite of Khawaja’s experience and far superior record at the Gabba.Australia 1 David Warner, 2 Marcus Harris, 3 Marnus Labuschagne, 4 Steven Smith, 5 Travis Head, 6 Cameron Green, 7 Alex Carey (wk), 8 Pat Cummins (capt), 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Nathan Lyon, 11 Josh HazlewoodJames Anderson will be rested by England in preparation for Adelaide. Stokes’ return gives England a lot more flexibility and shores up the top five. There was debate about the No. 6 slot but Ollie Pope will play his first Test in Australia instead of the experienced Jonny Bairstow. Stokes also allows for a more balanced attack. England look set to go with the pace of Mark Wood and the seam and skill of Chris Woakes and Ollie Robinson. The final call may come down to pitch and conditions. There is rain forecast and England may risk playing four quicks by playing Broad instead of Leach.England 1 Rory Burns, 2 Haseeb Hameed, 3 Dawid Malan, 4 Joe Root (capt), 5 Ben Stokes, 6 Ollie Pope, 7 Jos Buttler (wk), 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Ollie Robinson, 10 Mark Wood, 11 Stuart Broad/Jack LeachJoe Root takes a look at the pitch for the first Test•Getty Images

Pitch and conditions It has rained in Queensland for what has felt like a month. There has been some respite in the last week but showers and a possible thunderstorms are forecast for the first two days. The pitch had a solid covering of live green grass on it a day out from the match, but Cummins believed it looked like a normal Gabba surface.Stats and triviaEngland have not won in Brisbane since 1986-87. They drew famously in 2010-11 after being behind in the game but the Gabba-ttoir is no longer the impenetrable fortress it once was for visiting teams after India finally broke the 32-year 29-match drought in January. Nathan Lyon has sat poised on 399 Test wickets for nearly 11 months. His first wicket will see him become just the third Australian behind Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath to take 400 Test wickets and he would become 17th Test bowler overall to reach the milestone and just the seventh spinner. There is one glaring hole in Root’s imposing Test record and that is he has not scored a Test century in Australia. In 17 Test innings, he averages 38.00 and has passed 50 six times but has never reached three figures, with a highest score of 87. Australia and New Zealand are the only nations where he has played 10 Test innings or more and does not average 50 plus. Smith’s last two Ashes series have been extraordinary. In 14 innings he has made 1461 runs at 121.75 with six centuries, two double-centuries and five half-centuries. Carey joins a trio of Australians in making his Test debut after captaining Australia’s ODI team after Aaron Finch and chairman of selectors George Bailey. He has played 83 internationals for Australia already having served an apprenticeship similar to Adam Gilchrist who played 76 ODIs before his Test debut.Quotes

Callum Wilson expected to return to Newcastle squad vs Chelsea

Newcastle United have been plagued by injury problems in the past year or so, but it looks as though an “incredible” player is now “close” to being back in the fold.

Newcastle's injury problems

The Magpies’ form since their superb 2022/23 season has been patchy, in truth, with both performances and results too often proving to be inconsistent. While Eddie Howe and his players deserve an element of criticism for this, there is no question that injuries have also played a big part in Newcastle’s shortcomings, leading to them struggling to hit the levels they want to in the Premier League.

Newcastle United defender Sven Botman.

Centre-backs Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles have been long-term fitness casualties for the Magpies, having suffered serious knee issues, while Kieran Tripper has recently joined them on the sidelines with a hamstring problem.

There have also been so many others players unavailable at different times, however, including Nick Pope, Dan Burn, Joelinton, Joe Willock, Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak, meaning it has been hard for Howe to field a settled starting lineup.

"Incredible" Newcastle ace "close" to return

Providing a key update on the injury situation ahead of Saturday’s clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge [via The Northern Echo], Howe said that Newcastle striker Wilson is “close” to returning from injury, having impressed in training.

“He’s (Wilson) close. He’s trained and looked really good, but collectively we have to make a decision on the long term interests of Callum. What we don’t want to do is push him too early, so let’s see how he does this week.

“It will be massive (to have him back). You could see (against Brighton), if we had a fit and firing Callum Wilson available, in any sense whether that’s starting or coming off the bench, it will have lifted our performance. Not just the player, but the character of the player and the leadership qualities he possesses. He’s been a big miss.”

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson

This is an enormous boost for Newcastle, and while Wilson may not definitely be available for the trip to Chelsea, it now looks like a matter of time until he is back on the pitch. Admittedly, the 32-year-old may not quite be the force he once was, with injuries not helping – he is in the final year of his contract, too – but he is a player who Howe values greatly.

Newcastle United must freshen up their squad in the January transfer window

ByRoss Kilvington Oct 21, 2024

Having the £46,000-a-week Wilson available suddenly gives Newcastle some much-needed added firepower, with the Englishman scoring 48 goals in 108 appearances for the club, and his return could help coincide with a change in fortunes for the Magpies.

Wolverhampton Wanderers wages: Who is the best paid player at Wolves and everything you need to know about Wolverhampton's salary bill

How much does every Wolves player earn annually and who receives the most into their account?

Wolves returned to the Premier League in 2018 after a six-year absence from the English top-flight and they have held their own since.

In the first season since their return (2018-19), Wolves finished in seventh place and punched way above their weight under the tutelage of Portuguese manager Nuno Espirito Santo, who is currently working wonders at Nottingham Forest.

They repeated the feat in the 2019-20 season by finishing seventh again, but then they lost several key players such as Ruben Neves, Raul Jimenez, Diogo Jota, Conor Coady, etc. Since the 2020-21 season, Wolves have failed to finish the league campaign in the top half of the table.

This season, the club is fighting to avoid relegation, and fans are anxiously hoping to steer clear of the drop to the Championship. However, players like Matheus Cunha, Nelson Semedo, Rayan Ait-Nouri, and Jorgen Strand Larsen have the potential to be the key to securing their survival and preserving their top-flight status.

So, who is the highest earner at the Molineux Stadium this season? And who is on the opposite end of the spectrum?

Chris Dent hit an unbeaten 112 as Gloucestershire cruised to an eight-wicket win over Kent Spitfires in the Royal London Cup at Beckenham, with 74 balls to spare.Graeme van Buuren added an aggressive 51 not out as Gloucestershire closed on 219 for 2, leaving the visitors with an anxious wait to see if Lancashire would deny them a place in the quarter-finals by beating Essex at Old Trafford.Ollie Robinson made his highest List A score of 75 but Kent failed to build on a solid opening partnership and were restricted to 218 for 9. Van Buuren took 3 for 34, with James Bracey taking five catches.Gloucestershire began the day in sixth place in the table, but knowing they would qualify on points-per-game in third if they won and Lancashire lost to Essex. The visitors won the toss and asked Kent to bat under unexpectedly cloudy skies.Robinson was dropped on 12 and 21 and Kent advanced to 61 without loss, but the hosts toiled after Tawanda Muyeye pulled Jared Warner to Tom Smith at midwicket for 30.Van Buuren then bowled Jack Leaning for 16 and had a disgruntled George Munsey caught behind off the next ball. Harry Finch bottom-edged the hat-trick ball for a single but fell in the next over for one, becoming Ollie Price’s maiden victim at county level when he was caught behind.Robinson then edged Van Buuren behind and Bracey claimed his fourth catch of the innings when Josh Shaw found Grant Stewart’s inside edge and was out for six.Darren Stevens gave Kent some hope with 40, but when he was caught by Bracey off Matt Taylor Kent were down to the bowlers, with six overs remaining. Harry Podmore made 19 but when he tried to accelerate he holed out to Taylor and Smith took a steepling catch.Warner bowled Nathan Gilchrist for five and it was left to James Logan and Matt Quinn, unbeaten on 17 and 3 respectively, to nudge the total towards something defendable.Just how defendable it was became clear as Gloucestershire marched to 72 without loss before Price was lbw to Leaning for 24 in the 12th over. Logan trapped Bracey lbw, attempting to reverse sweep for 23 and Muyeye was unlucky not to take his first Kent wicket when Dent was dropped on 70, but the Spitfires were doomed by failure to make any further inroads.A Van Buuren six over midwicket sent a number of supporters to the exit and Dent reached his century with an edge through the vacant slip area for a single off Quinn, before cutting Stewart to the boundary for the winning runs.

Reps of £30m-rated free agent approached Liverpool on weekend over move

Representatives of a “world-class” player approached Liverpool over a potential move to Anfield, according to a new update from journalist Graeme Bailey.

Liverpool fail to strengthen midfield

The Reds had a quiet summer in the transfer window with Giorgi Mamardashvili signing from Valencia, but remaining with the La Liga side until at least the end of this season. Meanwhile, Federico Chiesa arrived from Juventus, adding further depth in attacking wide areas.

There have been many who felt that Liverpool were crying out for another midfielder, however, with a move for Real Sociedad ace Martin Zubimendi eventually falling through. It became clear that the Spaniard was a genuine target, but he decided to stay put at his current club.

Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi

A move for 17-year-old Sunderland starlet Chris Rigg has been mooted in recent days, but he would be one for the future and wouldn’t be able to join the Reds until at least the January transfer window.

There is still a chance for Liverpool to bring in free agents, however, in terms of players who don’t have a club currently, and an intriguing update has emerged regarding one individual.

Liverpool were approached over signing "world-class" ace

According to Bailey on X, Liverpool were one of the clubs who Adrien Rabiot’s representatives approached to speak about a move for the Frenchman around the same time that he agreed a deal with Marseille over the weekend, with Arsenal and Tottenham also mentioned in the update:

There would have arguably been clear plus sides to Liverpool signing Rabiot on a free transfer, not least because of the vast experience he now has in his locker. The 29-year-old has played for some of Europe’s biggest clubs in Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus, and he has even been described as “world-class” by David Trezeguet, who lauded him during his Juve days:

“We are talking about a problem for Juventus because in Italy he may have been targeted for criticism, but in France it’s completely different. He is world-class, an extraordinary player. Now he will evaluate his options and will go back to being the important player he always was.”

Liverpool’s midfield does arguably feel one man short currently, especially with Harvey Elliott out for the foreseeable future and Curtis Jones missing at the start of the season, and Rabiot could have helped fill that void.

That being said, he does turn 30 next year and may have demanded big wages because of the free nature of the move, and there have even been question marks about his attitude in the past, which may not have appealed to Arne Slot.

The positives may have outweighed the negatives when it comes to the £30m-rated Rabiot, but ultimately, it is understandable why the likes of Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes seemingly weren’t interested in snapping him up for Liverpool.

After Morato: Forest close in on £25m star who’d be deadly with Ward-Prowse

Nottingham Forest’s deadline day is well underway, with the club wasting no time in making various key additions to the squad.

The club have already agreed a €15m (£12.6m) deal with Benfica for centre-back Morato, whilst also reaching an agreement to sign midfielder James Ward-Prowse on a season-long loan from West Ham United.

It’s not the first time the Reds have been linked with a move to sign the Brazilian defender, with the club targeting a move for the 23-year-old last summer, but were eventually priced out of a move.

As for Ward-Prowse, his loan move could be a great deal, providing injury cover for Danilo, whilst bringing excellent set-piece quality to help aid Nuno Espírito Santo’s side in attacking areas.

However, despite the recent flurry of activity, more incomings are expected at the City Ground before tonight’s deadline, highlighting the ambition of owner Evangelos Marinakis.

A deal for one player seems to be heading in the right direction, potentially taking the Reds’ deadline-day incomings to three.

Nottingham Forest closing in on deal for exciting talent

According to German outlet BILD, Nottingham Forest are edging closer to a deal to sign Eintracht Frankfurt striker Omar Marmoush before the 11pm deadline.

It was confirmed yesterday that the club had made a third bid for the Egyptian forward, with the Bundesliga outfit holding out for €30m (£25m) to part ways with the talent who scored 17 goals in all competitions last season.

The latest report from BILD claims that ‘concrete negotiations are underway’ over a move for Marmoush, with the 25-year-old wanting a move to the Premier League this summer.

The Reds have been hunting for a striker in the last couple of weeks, with Eddie Nketiah and Santiago Gimenez both on their shortlist, but it appears Marmoush could be the chosen one, potentially forming an excellent partnership with one of the other new additions.

Why Marmoush would be deadly with Ward-Prowse

As previously mentioned, Ward-Prowse is edging closer to a move to the City Ground, with the 29-year-old set for a medical later on this afternoon.

He could be a brilliant piece of business on a temporary deal, bolstering the club’s midfield department, whilst also providing ammunition to the forward line.

The former Southampton ace registered eight assists in the Premier League last season, with his set-piece delivery falling into the hands of the attackers – none more so than potential new addition Marmoush.

Ward-Prowse is a superb option in possession, completing 83% of the passes he attempted in the Premier League last season, with an average of 4.3 progressive passes per 90 – showcasing his ability to play the ball into forward areas, handing the Egyptian with a plethora of opportunities in front of goal.

The deal for the Frankfurt talent could finally spell the end of the club’s hunt for a new talisman, with the 25-year-old having the ability to add that needed cutting edge to Nuno’s frontline.

It may be another expensive addition at around the £25m mark, but he would provide that top-level forward that the Reds have been searching for – further boosting Forest’s chances of pulling clear of any relegation battle during the 2024/25 campaign.
