Aaron Finch’s move away from opening might become more frequent but do not expect Australia’s white-ball captain to displace Mitch Marsh at No. 3.Eyebrows were raised when Ashton Agar opened in place of Finch in Australia’s T20I victory against Sri Lanka on Tuesday night. Part of the thinking was to stretch the batting line-up as much as possible and leave Marcus Stoinis and Matthew Wade at Nos. 6 and 7 respectively to give them more continuity in those roles after their pivotal performances in Australia’s T20 World Cup success.Related

Agar, the opener, wants to 'thrive than survive'

“We’re just trying a few different combinations to see where we land and get a bit more information with the World Cup (this year),” Finch said. “I think Mitch Marsh did a pretty amazing job of batting at three during the World Cup and throughout the West Indies and Bangladesh tours as well.”Finch is one of Australia’s finest-ever limited-overs openers, but instead came into bat at first drop in Canberra. The 35-year-old sees himself batting as low as No. 5 if needed, something he has done for Australia back in 2018, as the team plans towards defending their World Cup crown on home soil.Marsh, a hero in Australia’s World Cup triumph in the UAE last year, is sitting out the five-match series against Sri Lanka to prepare for the upcoming Pakistan tour. But Finch and interim coach Andrew McDonald are keen to tinker with new combinations and plan for all scenarios ahead of this October and November’s bumper T20 tournament.”I could potentially bat five in the next couple of games, although the coach isn’t too excited about that prospect but it’s something we’ll talk through and see what we want going forward,” Finch said. With the series already wrapped up following victories in the opening three matches, key quicks Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood will now rest to get ready for Pakistan. All three flew home to Sydney after the 3rd T20I in Canberra, while the rest of the squad travelled to Melbourne.Jhye Richardson, who starred in Australia’s Test victory over England in Adelaide before making way for Scott Boland, should return for Friday night’s T20I at the MCG. And star white-ball legspinner Adam Zampa is a certainty to be back after sitting out the third match.”Starc, Cummins, Hazlewood, between them they’ve had a big workload from the World Cup into the Ashes, and Josh coming off a bit of an injury,” Finch said. “They’re going to Pakistan shortly, so we felt that was important for them to stay at home and get out of the (bio-security) bubble for a day or two.”Australia’s Test squad will gather in Melbourne after Sunday’s T20I series finale before getting ready to embark on the historic tour of Pakistan.

Improvement in the present is considered to be important, but the USMNT are building towards the longer-term goal of being fiercely competitive at a home World Cup in 2026. Ream believes a squad loaded with talent will be firing on all cylinders by then, courtesy of their Argentine tactician.

Veteran defender Ream has told FIFA’s of the benefits that Pochettino brings: “He just brings an intensity and a focus in everything that he does, and he translates that into the players. Over the first couple of camps, that’s what we’ve seen and it’s been evident. He's going to continue that. He's going to evolve us. He’ll improve us in the way we want to play, in our transitions, movements, and rotations, trying to confuse opposition with different setups. He’s going to lead the evolution of who we are as players and as a nation. He's going to take that to a new level.”

Sheffield Shield: Henry Hunt, the hero in lone-hand for South Australia

Henry Hunt played an extraordinary lone-hand for South Australia, scoring his second consecutive Sheffield Shield century to defy Tasmania on the second day of the rain-affected clash at Bellerive Oval.Hunt made 134 out of South Australia’s 220, with Liam Scott (42) the only other team-mate to reach 15, as Peter Siddle ripped through the visitors, taking 4 for 42.Charlie Wakim made a fine 68 in reply, and Tim Ward faced 102 balls for 29 in the late afternoon to put Tasmania in a solid position only for Nathan McAndrew to remove both men in the fading light to leave the game well poised.Earlier, Hunt stood firm after South Australia collapsed to 5 for 78 in overcast conditions, with Test hopeful Travis Head falling cheaply for 14, chopping Lawrence Neil-Smith onto his stumps, attempting a lead-footed drive on the up. Since dominating the early season matches at Karen Rolton Oval, Head has had diminishing returns of 53, 23, 21, 9 and 14 on spicier surfaces at Adelaide Oval, the WACA and Bellerive Oval.Alex Carey also fell cheaply, slicing Siddle to point. Hunt was rock solid by comparison in his 236-ball epic. He struck 15 fours and three sixes to remain resolute while wickets tumbled at the other end. Scott provided excellent support in a brisk 65-run stand. Hunt was the last man out after adding 28 for the 10th wicket with David Grant facing just one ball. Jarrod Freeman picked up three wickets at the end of the innings.Daniel Worrall struck early in Tasmania’s first innings, squaring up Caleb Jewell with a peach to have him caught at third slip. Worrall operated with five slips at one stage, but Wakim and Ward negotiated the seaming conditions well as the sun came out in the afternoon. The pair shared a 96-run partnership, with Wakim striking eight boundaries in his fluent 68. But Wakim lost his off bail to a cracking off-cutter from Nathan McAndrew. Ward struck just one boundary in 102 deliveries he faced, playing very cautiously. But he fell driving at a ball that held up in the last over of the day, slicing McAndrew to point. Ben McDermott and Tasmania’s perennial night-watchman Neil-Smith survived to stumps.

"Brilliant" £46k-p/w wantaway Newcastle star subject of four-club chase

As Newcastle United prepare for a busy summer transfer window, one wantaway player could be heading for the exit door amid a four-club battle to secure his signature.

Newcastle transfer news

Following a transfer window to forget last time out, sporting director Paul Mitchell has already made his first move of 2025. Getting off to the perfect start, Newcastle confirmed the news that 17-year-old forward Vakhtang Salia will join the club from Dinamo Tbilisi on his 18th birthday in a deal that could benefit the Magpies for years to come.

Speaking about the deal, Mitchell told Newcastle’s official website: “We’re delighted to get ahead of a number of other top clubs to sign Vakhtang. Scouting and recruiting emerging talent is an essential part of building a sustainable future, particularly within the current PSR framework, so the market is fiercely competitive.

“We continue to scout extensively, both domestically and overseas, with a view to securing players who can come through our talent pathway and, ideally, become part of the first team in future. We look forward to working with Vakhtang and wish him every success during his remaining time with Dinamo Tbilisi.”

However, as one striker arrives, another could be heading for the exit door. According to The Sun, Callum Wilson is the subject of a four-club chase and wants to leave Newcastle with his contract coming to an end this summer.

Southampton, Fulham, Crystal Palace and Brentford are all reportedly keeping tabs on the forward ahead of a potential January switch, which would see Wilson get one last Premier League move.

Newcastle would be wise to keep "brilliant" Wilson for now

Although losing him for free in the summer will be far from ideal, Newcastle simply do not have the squad depth to lose Wilson in the January transfer window. As we’ve seen this season, one injury to Alexander Isak would leave the Magpies without a natural No 9 to call upon. Add in their enforced makeshift backline at times and it’s a problem that Eddie Howe could do without.

With Wilson’s £46,000-a-week contract ticking down, he has a decision to make. Still battling back from yet more injury struggles himself, he should be keen to bow out of St James’ Park fit and firing.

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson

At his best, Wilson has received high praise from Howe, who previously told reporters via Chronicle Live: “He was outstanding like he has been whenever he has played this season, but he’s a brilliant player to have in the squad and what an impact.

“He’s always had the desire to score, it’s what he lives for, the team has got him in good areas and it’s his job to finish that off. I’ve managed him for a long time and it’s great to see him get the rewards his performances deserve.”

Rangers had a starlet who was like "Wayne Rooney", then he left for £0

Glasgow Rangers head coach Philippe Clement is currently under pressure at Ibrox after losing for the second time in eight Scottish Premiership matches on Sunday.

The Light Blues were beaten 1-0 by Kilmarnock and Football Insider reports that the board are preparing to sack the Belgian head coach if results do not improve.

As well as results, Clement may also want to improve his use of academy talent, as Ross McCausland has been the only player to emerge as a first-team regular in his year in charge so far.

Rangers forward Ross McCausland.

The Northern Irish youngster has played 52 first-team games for the club and contributed with six goals and seven assists in all competitions to date, but one of his former teammates once looked like a greater prospect and never made the grade.

Rangers though they had their own Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney produced 253 goals and 139 assists in 559 matches for Manchester United throughout his terrific career as a player, often deployed as either a centre-forward or an attacking midfielder.

First Impressions

What did pundits and fans alike think about their new star signing when they arrived? Football FanCast's 'First Impressions' series has everything you need.

Rangers once thought they had a talent with similar attributes to the England legend when versatile forward Charlie Lindsay was coming up through the ranks.

Speaking during the 2020 Alkass Cup, former footballer Chris Makin hailed Lindsay as a “natural finisher” and claimed that the youngster reminded him “so much of Wayne Rooney” in the way that he played in an attacking midfield or wide left role – as he was the joint-top scorer at the tournament at the time.

The teenager had signed for Rangers from Northern Irish outfit Glentoran earlier that year and caught the eye at U18 level, given Makin’s comments, before making his breakthrough in the B team in the 2022/23 campaign.

In that season, the Northern Ireland U19 star produced a staggering 20 goals and 14 assists, whilst playing as a winger or a number ten, for the B team, which shows that the exciting prospect was in lethal form for the Gers at the top end of the pitch.

Why Charlie Lindsay left Rangers

At the end of that campaign, after a sublime haul of 34 goals and assists, the Rooney-like talent decided that he wanted to go and play first-team football, as per pundit Carlton Palmer.

It was claimed that Rangers wanted to keep the teenage starlet but he decided to leave on a free transfer in search of regular football, and moved to Derby County in the summer of 2023.

Former Rangers boss Michael Beale.

Michael Beale was in charge at Ibrox at the time and seemingly did not give enough of a guarantee that there would be opportunities for him moving forward in Glasgow.

The move to the Rams in England did not work out for Lindsay, though, as he made seven U21 appearances before joining Glentoran on loan for the second half of the season, and then signing for the Northern Irish side permanently earlier this year.

Since his return to Glentoran, having left them to sign for Rangers in 2020, the 20-year-old gem has scored three goals and failed to provide a single assist in 16 first-team games.

More valuable than Butland: Rangers hit gold with star whose value's soared

ByDan Emery Oct 18, 2024

He still has plenty of time left to fulfill his potential, at the age of 20, but he has so far failed to live up to the Rooney comparison from 2020 and did not make the breakthrough at first-team level for Rangers, despite his sensational form for the B team.

Arsenal show Havertz faith after summer striker decision

Mikel Arteta ultimately chose to stick with on-fire centre-forward Kai Havertz after deciding not to bring in a striker before summer transfer deadline day, with the German repaying that show of faith.

Havertz’s latest heroics in a 2-0 win against PSG – opening the score with a towering header beyond the on-looking Gianluigi Donnarumma – add to his tally of five goals and an assist across nine appearances in all competitions so far.

Since signing from Chelsea last summer, the versatile 25-year-old has gone on to become a key Arsenal player despite early criticism. However, Edu and Arteta did attempt to bring in an alternative to Havertz and Gabriel Jesus over the summer.

Arsenal made an offer to sign Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig, and were involved in a high-profile Premier League race against Chelsea and Man United for the Slovenian’s signature. However, Sesko decided instead to remain at Leipzig – penning a contract extension with the condition of a “gentleman’s agreement” that he could leave in 2025 or 2026.

Arsenal are believed to be weighing up the possibility of bringing in a new striker next year instead, and Sesko remains on their list alongside a host of other star names.

Reports claim Edu is looking at Marcus Thuram of Inter Milan, with Sporting Lisbon sensation Viktor Gyokeres on Arsenal’s radar as well. The stellar form of Aston Villa star Jhon Duran has led to Arsenal chiefs believing he’d be an even better capture than Gyokeres, according to Football Transfers, but Sesko remains at the forefront of their thinking.

Arsenal send scouts to run rule over Sesko at Leipzig this week

According to The Boot Room, Arsenal scouts were at Leipzig this week to run the rule over Sesko, with the 21-year-old seemingly impressing as he bagged a brace against Juventus in the Champions League.

While the 21-year-old was ultimately on the losing side, Sesko showcased his proficiency yet again – picking up where he left off from last season. The former Salzburg starlet has chalked up six goals and three assists in eight total appearances so far this term, following a 2023/2024 campaign where he netted 18 in all competitions.

“Benjamin Šeško is among the game’s top young talents and has enormous potential to become a top player,” said Leipzig technical director Christopher Vivell.

“He has all the qualities to do that. He’s extremely quick, has a great jump on him and is strong in the air. Benjamin is a real goalscorer, who despite his 1.95m (6’4″) is mobile and technically strong. His abilities make him a special player with a special profile.”

Sesko’s new deal is rumoured to include a £63 million release clause, a mark-up from his previous one in the summer, but it could still represent good value for money.

Chelsea now reach agreement on personal terms with £250k-p/w Jadon Sancho

Chelsea once again find themselves at the centre of the headlines even as the transfer window approaches its final hours, having reportedly reached an agreement over personal terms as they work to do a last-minute deal.

Chelsea transfer news

The Blues are looking to end their summer as it started by welcoming incomings for Enzo Maresca's side. It was always likely to be a busy day at Stamford Bridge, of course, as Todd Boehly and others look to rediscover the balance in Maresca's squad by offloading several frozen out players and replacing them with fresh faces.

That includes Raheem Sterling, who is one of many to have been left training away from the first-team and told to leave the London club if he wants any form of game time this season. Maresca recently told the press via Fabrizio Romano: “All the players who in this moment are training apart will NOT get any minutes in case they stay. My advice to Sterling? He knows exactly what he has to do. It’s not just Raheem, all of them."

Raheem Sterling

Even as they look to thin out a packed squad, however, there's still arrivals on the cards, including a direct replacement for Sterling. According to Romano, Chelsea have now agreed personal terms with Jadon Sancho, who earns a reported £250k-a-week at Manchester United, and are now awaiting Manchester United's verdict on their two loan bids offering differing structured deals.

Sancho, like Sterling, is unlikely to receive the minutes that he's after with his current employers, opening the door for a late exit. Whether that exit is to Chelsea remains to be seen, however.

Now or never for "gifted" Sancho in the Premier League

When Sancho finally made his way to Manchester United after a lengthy transfer saga in 2021, resulting in a deal worth a hefty £73m, he was one of the best wingers around. All signs pointed towards an excellent piece of business by all involved at Old Trafford. Yet, three years later and a falling out with Ten Hag in between, Sancho finds himself heading for the exit door with more of a whimper than a roar.

Having shown glimpses of his best when on loan at Borussia Dortmund last season, however, there's still every chance that Chelsea land the bargain of the summer if they secure a loan, plus an option or obligation to buy, for Sancho.

Described as "gifted" by former Dortmund boss Edin Terzic during that loan spell in the last campaign, there's a player still in there waiting to burst into life in the Premier League. But it's now or never for Sancho, who wouldn't exactly be arriving in an environment known for helping new signings find success.

Nonetheless, a move to Stamford Bridge is one that Sancho seemingly wants after reportedly agreeing personal terms with Chelsea.

Scouts sent: West Ham eyeing up teen talent who’s "balling out" this season

Julen Lopetegui has endured a difficult start to life at West Ham United in the Premier League, having replaced David Moyes in the dugout over the summer. The Spanish head coach has won one of his first five matches in the division and has lost all three of his games at the London Stadium so far.

His side were comfortably beaten by Chelsea on Saturday, losing 3-0 in the early kick-off, and he may already be looking ahead to the January transfer window to make further additions to his squad.

The Hammers will be putting plans in place to potentially dip into the market to bolster the team and are reportedly looking at an impressive talent from the Premier League.

Latest West Ham transfer news

According to HITC, 18-year-old Southampton winger Tyler Dibling is on West Ham’s radar ahead of the upcoming January transfer window. The report claims that the London side have already sent scouts to watch the teenage prospect in action in the top-flight against Ipswich Town on Saturday.

However, they are far from the only team showing an interest in the young gem. Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, Crystal Palace, and Manchester United also sent scouts to keep tabs on his progress with the Saints.

HITC does not reveal whether or not any of those sides are willing to make an official offer for the English starlet, who talent scout Jacek Kulig claimed has a “brilliant” left foot, or how much Southampton would want for their academy graduate.

West Ham’s scouts picked a fantastic match to go and watch to assess the youngster’s quality, as he enjoyed a terrific afternoon against Ipswich.

Tyler Dibling's performance against Ipswich

The scouts in attendance for Dibling’s performance against the Tractor Boys on Saturday will surely have been impressed by his display at St. Mary’s.

It was a perfect start to the game for the 18-year-old as he brilliantly took the ball into his path and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to give his side the lead after five minutes.

The West Ham target, who also won a penalty against Manchester United earlier this month, also caught the eye with his general play throughout the match.

The Southampton winger also created a ‘big chance’ for his team and held his own in physical duels, winning eight of his 13 battles for the ball. This suggests that the teenage wizard, who completed 75% of his attempted dribbles, is already able to physically compete in the Premier League, despite only being 18.

Dibling, who U23 scout Antonio Mango claimed is “balling out” at the moment, is a sublime prospect who has already shown that he can deliver quality performances in the top-flight at such a young age, which is why he is such an exciting target for the Irons.

World Cup-winner Pogba is a product of the Red Devils’ famed academy system, having made a senior breakthrough under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2011. • WHAT SAHA SAID

Former United striker Saha has told of a potential third stint in England: “I’ve heard some rumours that Paul Pogba will be offered the opportunity to come back and train with Man United in the New Year, and I think that would be a great opportunity for Paul. He needs to get back to his best level as quickly as possible, and training with top players will help him to do that. I think he would be thrilled to have the opportunity to go back to the club.

“I also think that Paul Pogba is still a very special player. When you think about midfielders, Pogba has unique qualities. I think the United squad lacks power in the midfield, and we’re missing a skilful player that can play box-to-box, so he would be a good addition (to the United squad) because he’s a different profile of player to what United have.

“When I look at Pogba, I think that many teams in the Premier League would find signing him as a free agent an attractive proposition. Forget about the salary, I’m sure Paul is ready to find a compromise on that as he wants to play football again after such a long time on the sidelines. When I think about Pogba, there are more positives with signing him than there are negatives, and I think he’s a player that should interest Manchester United in January. All the top clubs in the Premier League should see signing Pogba on a free transfer as an amazing opportunity. That’s how I see it.”

Farke could land Gruev upgrade in late Leeds swoop for £23k-p/w star

Leeds United fans would have been understandably relieved after Friday night's clash away at Sheffield Wednesday, picking up their first three league points of the season at the expense of Danny Rohl's Owls.

The 2-0 win would be secured via goals from Brenden Aaronson and Daniel James, as the Whites largely dominated proceedings at Hillsborough, with more possession and shots in their favour compared to the hosts.

Still, Daniel Farke and Co will be desperately trying to get more deals in through the door between now and the end of the transfer window getting closer, with this midfield gem still firmly on the Championship club's radar.

Leeds still chasing deal for Koln star

As per a recent report from German outlet BILD, Koln midfield star Dejan Ljubicic is still pushing for a late move to England, with the Austrian target keen on leaving Koln behind for pastures new at Elland Road before the deadline on Friday.

Further backed up by a report in the Sunday Mail – as relayed by MOT Leeds News – which states that snapping up Ljubicic's services is a main priority now, after Manor Solomon completes a medical to join on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, everything seems to be going full steam ahead on the transfer front in West Yorkshire.

Dejan Ljubicic for FC Koln.

Whilst the signings of Solomon and Ramazani in through the door will undoubtedly help Leeds in their depleted forward positions, picking up Ljubicic would also benefit the Whites in their holding midfield positions, away from over-relying on the likes of Ilia Gruev, whom he could be an upgrade on.

The Bulgarian arguably struggled against Wednesday – with a lack of attacking presence coming from the 24-year-old throughout – whilst Ljubicic would offer Farke's men a more attack-minded option from deep, to complement the battling nature of Ethan Ampadu who will do the dirty work instead.

What Ljubicic would offer Leeds

The wantaway Koln number seven would show off his obvious strengths when it comes to his attacking game versus Eintracht Braunschweig last time out in Bundesliga 2 action, with Ljubicic firing in two goals from the middle of the park.

The final scoreline would read 5-0 in Koln's favour, with the likelihood now that the £23k-per-week ace – as per Salary Sport – could swap Germany for West Yorkshire, to play for another fallen giant swamped in the second tier.

Unlike Gruev, who failed to register a single shot on James Beadle's goal during Leeds' Friday night win, Ljubicic was a constant livewire for Koln going forward versus Braunschweig, with seven shots registered in the 5-0 demolition job just from the Austrian alone.

Also showing his willingness to play dirty in that exciting Bundesliga 2. contest, with three duels won, the current Koln number seven could end up displacing Gruev, who was also purchased from Germany once upon a time after lining up for Werder Bremen.

Dejan Ljubicic for FC Koln.

Of course, the former Bremen man has performed for the Whites in the past – with a sublime free-kick soaring in last campaign from the 24-year-old helping Leeds to a dominant 4-0 play-off semi-final win over Norwich – but there will be a concern in the air that Farke's men are not sweeping opponents aside with ease, having amassed 13 total efforts on the Wednesday goal.

With Joe Rothwell waiting in the wings too who can give Leeds more going forward from the middle of the park, alongside Ramazani and Solomon exciting the Elland Road fanbase with what they can add up top, Ljubicic joining feels like the next logical step Farke and Co will make in this frantic window.

He could well go on to become a better talent than Gruev in the first-team mix for the Championship side, as Leeds go about strengthening in areas that need more depth before deadline day.
