Leeds now in talks to sell "hardworking" Marc Roca in permanent deal

Leeds United boss Daniel Farke will be keen to accelerate his potential plans for the January transfer window and now looks to be well down the line regarding a potential sale at Elland Road, according to a report.

Leeds falter in promotion race with defeat at Preston

Realistically, Farke has to perform something of a squad rebuild upon arrival at Elland Road as he was tasked with the chance of revitalising a club who endured a turbulent campaign last year. At the halfway point of 2023/24, it would have to be deemed that the German coach has done a decent job in his new capacity, with his side well in the race for promotion from the Championship.

49ers express interest in signing "outstanding" new full-back for Leeds

He could return to England for a cut-price fee…

BySean Markus Clifford Dec 24, 2023

Summer arrivals like Joel Piroe and Ethan Ampadu have all gone on to become key cogs in his machinery in Yorkshire. At the same time, enhancing existing players' abilities such as Crysencio Summerville, Georginio Rutter and Daniel James has helped to give the Whites a genuine chance of returning to the English top-flight at the first time of asking – between them, that trio have registered 41 goal contributions this campaign.

However, the Whites faltered on Boxing Day as Illan Meslier was sent off in a 2-1 defeat at Preston, with Liam Millar grabbing a late winner to severely damage Farke's hopes of finishing the campaign in the top two.

Come January, shipping players out of the door will be a useful avenue to generate cash for incoming deals, and the Whites are in an unusually advantageous position concerning potential outgoings due to the large quantity of players who are currently away from Elland Road on a loan basis. Now, it looks as if one loanee is now well on his way to departing Leeds on a permanent deal ahead of the January window, according to a report.

Marc Roca could leave Leeds United permanently…

According to Football Insider, Leeds and Real Betis are in talks regarding a permanent deal for Marc Roca, who joined the La Liga outfit in the summer window on loan.

The report states that Roca is keen to leave Elland Road for good and has instructed his agent to sever ties with the Whites following his departure earlier this year that came about due to a relegation release clause. Spending just one season in Yorkshire, the 27-year-old has since gone on to be a key player at the Benito Villamarin Stadium, featuring regularly in the Spanish top-flight and Europa League.

Labelled "hardworking" by former boss Julian Nagelsmann, Roca has appeared on 25 occasions this campaign across all competitions, registering two goals and four assists (Roca statistics – Transfermarkt).

Nevertheless, his time at his parent club looks to be coming to an end and selling him would allow Leeds to recoup some of the £10 million they paid to sign him for back in 2022 from Bayern Munich.

Stuart Broad given day off after being dropped for Barbados Test

Hotel considering legal action after story about seamer suffering from supposed attack of bed bugs

Stuart Broad and James Anderson chat with coach Trevor Bayliss•AFP

Stuart Broad has been given the day off after being left out of England’s team for the first Test in Barbados.Broad was bitterly disappointed to miss out to Sam Curran and Adil Rashid in the final XI. Instead of fulfilling the duties of 12th man on the second day at the Kensington Oval, Broad has been given the opportunity to take some time away from the game. He will be expected to report back as normal on Friday. It is not the first time this England management group has taken such a course of action. Players who have been left out or have little prospect of getting into the XI have similarly been given leave in the recent past with the management recognising that some time out of the team environment can be helpful in coming to terms with disappointment. A non-playing member of the squad will be given a day off on a rotational basis on each day of this Test. Chris Woakes has also been given Thursday as a day off.Meanwhile ESPNcricinfo understands the hotel where the England and West Indies teams are staying is considering legal action after it was suggested that Broad had suffered from bed bug bites during his stay there. The suggestion, initially reported by the BBC, has left the hotel management and officials at CWI deeply underwhelmed. They have suggested that Broad might have left his hotel room window open and been bitten by either sand flies or mosquitoes, both of which are common in the tropics. They also insist the bites had no bearing on his availability for selection. The BBC also claimed that England players were sleeping on mattresses in the hotel’s corridors to avoid the bugs; a suggestion that was described as “nonsense” and “not true” by the ECB. CWI chief executive, Johnny Grave, is also understood to have made his feelings known to the BBC.

'Not just Bayern Munich' – Julian Nagelsmann's future to be decided 'in the next few days' as agent confirms talks

Julian Nagelsmann's agent has claimed that his client is being pursued by multiple clubs and "not just Bayern Munich".

  • Nagelsmann close to Bayern return
  • Other clubs also vying for coach
  • Could confirm his future by end of the month
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

There have been reports that Bayern Munich are poised to re-appoint Nagelsmann as their new manager following Thomas Tuchel's departure at the end of the current season. Despite the strong interest from Bayern, Nagelsmann is also listening to offers from other clubs who are keen to bring him on board, according to his agent Volker Struth.

    WHAT VOLKER STRUTH SAID

Speaking on the 'Spielmacher- der EM-Podcast von 360Media mit Sebastian Hellmann,' Struth addressed the speculation surrounding Nagelsmann's future and said: "Everyone is currently asking me the same question: Is Nagelsmann going back to Bayern or what is Nagelsmann doing? (…) This will be decided in the next few days. It will be decided shortly. In the next five, six, seven days. (…)

"It would be complete nonsense to say that we are not talking to interested parties. Without me wanting to say who the interested parties are. I can only say, it's not just Bayern Munich. That's normal. That's my job, and it would be a bit of a joke towards the media to say we're not having conversations. Of course, we are having conversations now. It has also been announced by Julian himself that he will probably make a decision about his future in April.“

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

The possibility of Nagelsmann's return gained traction after Xabi Alonso, who was initially considered for the position, opted to remain at Bayer Leverkusen. This development prompted Bayern to intensify their efforts to secure Nagelsmann's services. Sporting directors Christoph Freund and Max Eberl are believed to be leading the negotiations with Nagelsmann's agency, Sports360, discussing contract terms that may span either three or four years.

  • HOW DID BAYERN RESPOND

Bayern CEO, Jan-Christian Dreesen, also seemingly admitted that they are indeed in touch with Nagelsmann along with a few other candidates.

Speaking to after Bayern's Champions League victory over Arsenal he said: "We'll see. We've spoken with a few candidates! Today that is not the topic. We are happy to reach the UCL semifinals beating Arsenal. And today we are not talking about coaching issues. Today, we are happy with Thomas Tuchel, with the team, and all those who have done a wonderful job today."

Ange’s transfer plan for January shared amid key Spurs injury blow

Ange Postecoglou wants to add a fresh face to one key area of the Tottenham squad as the January transfer window approaches, coming amid some real injury concerns.

Van de Ven and Maddison injuries

Spurs suffered their first defeat of the Premier League campaign on Monday with a 4-1 loss at home to Mauricio Pochettino's Chelsea. The encounter has pretty much everything a neutral could hope for; sending offs, VAR controversy, goals galore and a bold move by Tottenham to maintain a high line despite being down to nine men in the second half.

In what was, arguably, the division's most entertaining encounter of 2023/2024 so far. However, it was an evening that spelt horror for Postecoglou, who lost a quartet of star players in Destiny Udogie, Cristian Romero, James Maddison and Micky van de Ven.

Udogie and Romero will now sit out temporarily through suspension, while Maddison and van de Ven could be sidelined for the foreseeable through injury. The extent of Maddison's problem hasn't been officially confirmed yet, but van de Ven may be set to miss a fair chunk of games. Postecoglou, speaking after his side's loss to Chelsea, has described the Dutch defender's injury as a "significant" one.

The 22-year-old pulled up clutching his hamstring and could barely leave the pitch without assistance.

"It's too early but looking at Micky you're thinking it's a pretty significant one so you'd assume he'll be out for a little while." said Postecoglou on Maddison and van de Ven.

"Madders got a knock on the ankle and we'll just have to assess him and see how it is."

Spurs have started the new campaign with real aplomb as Postecoglou cements himself as a real fan favourite; winning eight out of their opening 11 top-flight encounters while remaining unbeaten until their last game. If Tottenham wish to maintain their excellent early-season form, the January transfer market comes as a solution to plug gaping holes in Postecoglou's squad.

Postecoglou "keen" to bolster key area

Writing for Football Insider, journalist Pete O'Rourke has shared the Tottenham manager's plans for the winter window. It is believed Postecoglou is "keen" to bolster his centre-back options in particular, amid van de Ven's injury blow.

This comes after the Australian previously hinted at activity in the new year, explaining that the mid-season window will be an "important" one for Spurs.

Micky van de Ven

"It is important they come in now. The January window, like for every club, is an important one," said Postecoglou on January transfers.

"My view on the January one is that if you can get your business done early in the window it certainly is more helpful because you leave it until the end of January and sometimes what you train to gain you've missed that opportunity by waiting a whole month.

"That's sometimes out of your control so having Johan in is good. I'm sure we'll have a lot of discussions between now and then and I'm looking forward to working with him."

In terms of rumoured names, it's been claimed that Spurs are eyeing Fulham's Tosin Adarabioyo, with Tottenham also targeting Lloyd Kelly of Bournemouth.

Yolani Fourie, Moseline Daniels in South Africa women's World T20 squad

They replaced Raisibe Ntozakhe, who has been suspended for an illegal bowling action, and Saarah Smith, who sustained an injury during practice

Liam Brickhill02-Nov-2018Cricket South Africa has announced two changes to the squad for the Women’s World T20, which begins on November 9. While one of the changes – the naming of a replacement for offspinner Raisibe Ntozakhe – was expected, the other comes after a surprise injury to one of the team’s rookie members.Ntozakhe was suspended for an illegal bowling action in October and was replaced by Yolani Fourie, another offspinner from Gauteng, while she works on remodelling her bowling action. Left-arm medium pacer Moseline Daniels was also called up after Saarah Smith sustained a proximal phalanx basal fracture on her pinky finger during a practice session on Saturday. The injury will take four to six weeks to resolve.”It’s very unfortunate,” said coach Hilton Moreeng of Smith’s injury. “We feel her pain as one of our squad members who worked extremely hard through the winter to find herself in her very first World Cup. To end it so prematurely for her it’s very disappointing and we wish her a speedy recovery and we know that she will make a good come back. She’s got a strong head on her shoulders.”Going forward now, after a discussion with the rest of the selectors, the players coming in are both suitable replacements, players who have both been to World Cups before so we will have that experience to fall back on and we know that they will be able to add value to the team from game one.”South Africa will play in Group A in St Lucia against defending champions West Indies, England, Sri Lanka and World Cup Qualifier winners Bangladesh, with their opening game against Sri Lanka on 12 November. In two unofficial warm-up games so far, they have lost to England by 17 runs and India, narrowly, by three runs.South Africa squad: Dané van Niekerk (captain), Chloe Tryon, Lizelle Lee, Suné Luus, Shabnim Ismail, Masabata Klaas, Mignon du Preez, Marizanne Kapp, Laura Wolvaardt, Zintle Mali, Robyn Searle, Tumi Sekhukhune, Trisha Chetty (wk), Yolani Fourie, Moseline Daniels

'The situation matters more to me than strike rates' – Hanuma Vihari

Almost exactly a year ago, India A travelled to South Africa for two unofficial Tests and a one-day triangular. Hanuma Vihari was only part of the squad for the two four-day games against South Africa A, and he only got to play in the second of them, in Potchefstroom. He scored 7 in the first innings, and in the second dig he walked in when India were two runs away from their target of 224. He faced one ball, and hit the winning boundary. It’s hard to draw any conclusions from a match like that, but for Vihari it was an opportunity missed. He knew what it meant to be part of the India A set-up, and didn’t want to miss out when the next tour came along. Despite getting such a limited opportunity, Vihari says the tour taught him a lot, especially since he was in close proximity to Rahul Dravid, the India A coach.”Going to South Africa and playing in those conditions, especially [since] it was my first tour, I learned a lot from that tour,” Vihari told . “I knew what was coming after that. I knew I had to perform a lot in the domestic season again to get back into the India A squad because that tour didn’t go well for me, especially with the bat.”I had only one innings – I didn’t perform, but I knew I had to perform more in the domestic season to get back into the side, and grow in the India A level, because if you have to play for India, you have to score in the A team, there’s no other choice.”So I knew I had to do well again. It helped me a lot in South Africa, especially with Rahul sir. It was the first tour with him, for me, and he gave us advice in that tour, it helped me a lot.”Since then, Vihari has made good his desire to keep scoring heavily. He scored a century in his only match in the Duleep Trophy and another hundred in the Irani Cup, those two knocks sandwiching a Ranji Trophy season in which he made 752 runs at an average of 94.00 – including a career-best 302 not out. On the tour of England with India A in June-July, he made scores of 69 and 147 in the one-day triangular series, and a 68 in an unofficial Test against West Indies A. Back home, he made 202 runs at 67.33 in two four-day games against South Africa A.All those runs have catapulted Vihari into India’s Test squad for the last two Tests in England. He knows it won’t be easy for him to break into the first XI immediately – apart from the established middle-order batsmen, he also has Karun Nair to get past – but he is mindful that he has to be ready mentally to grab the opportunity when it does arrive.”To be honest, if you see the Indian side, it’s tough to get into the side, but once you get into the side you have to make sure that you grab that opportunity,” he said. “That’s the only thing I’m thinking about. I know that opportunity will come, but I have to be really ready for the opportunity. Once it comes I really want to grab it and make it my own.”And when he does get the opportunity, he wants to show the world that he can adapt his game to any situation.”It’s more the situation that matters to me rather than the strike rates I’m batting at,” Vihari said. “Sometimes on a good day you’ll bat at 60-70 in a four-day game, but sometimes you have to grind for the team, you have to bat at 45-50 as well.”If you have that mental ability to bat differently at different situations, you’re rated as one of the best batsmen, you can score consistently at a higher level as well.”

Aggie Beever-Jones: Chelsea's WSL breakout star looks destined for Lionesses success

Named on England's bench for the first time in February, the 20-year-old has been the Blues' super-sub this year – and now her role is set to increase

Aggie Beever-Jones has ticked a lot of things off her footballing bucket list this season. She's scored her first Chelsea goal; she's found the back of the net at Stamford Bridge; she's made her Champions League debut and she's even mixed it with England's senior team. But the London Football Awards this month, at which she was named Women’s Young Player of the Year, highlighted just how quick her rise has been.

The 20-year-old might look relatively unfazed when she is running at some of England and Europe’s best full-backs, but getting up on stage in a room full of people to accept an accolade like that? “She found it quite intimidating,” Chelsea boss Emma Hayes revealed. “She'd never been to an awards like that before – but I doubt it will be the last award she gets in her career.”

Enjoying a breakthrough season that included her scoring in five successive Women's Super League games, all but one of those appearances coming as a substitute, Beever-Jones’ role with the English champions is about to become much more important. However, despite her age and relative inexperience, she appears absolutely ready for it – even if an acceptance speech might prompt a few butterflies in the stomach.

GettyPlenty of potential

For those who have watched Beever-Jones at England youth level, it has always felt more a case of when, rather than if, she would make her mark in the WSL. She is an electric forward, one with all the confidence to drive at players, and the versatility to play out wide or as the No.9.

She’s racked up 13 goals in 30 appearances with the Lionesses' under-age sides, one of the highlights coming around two years ago when her second-half hat-trick secured England’s place at the UEFA Under-19 Women’s Championship, via a 3-0 win over Belgium.

“She's a great character who has a huge influence on the group just because of the sort of bubbly nature that she has,” Gemma Davies, England’s U19s coach at the time, said after that Belgium win. “She's very funny but down to earth and hard-working – and probably hard-working is key. You saw that, I think, in her performance. She's super diligent and hard-working and that sort of led to her staying in the game, because I think at this age, players can have a tendency to kind of drop off, switch off, lose focus in moments, but she, throughout 90 minutes, just stayed in the game. You saw that in the three goals that she scored and also her performance.”

AdvertisementGettyBrilliant in Bristol

But if it rarely felt in doubt that Beever-Jones would become a WSL regular, there was always uncertainty over whether it would be with Chelsea, just because of the sheer depth and competition that exists in the squad of the English champions. Loan spells were vital, then, and the 20-year-old has had two great ones.

At the start of the 2021-22 season, aged 18, she joined Bristol City in the Championship for a season that would help to kickstart her senior career. "They welcomed me like I was one of their own and helped me in many ways both on and off the pitch, with living away from home and getting the support I needed,” Beever-Jones told . "Then on the pitch, they trusted me to play, which as a younger player is something you really need. You need that game time to experiment, try new things and make mistakes. I was able to do that at Bristol City."

“We were part of the process and that’s what we hope to be – part of the process for these players that go on and play at the top level,” Robins boss Lauren Smith said. “I hope she [carries] on smashing it because I’m so pleased that she’s managed to get herself into that squad and get onto the pitch. For Emma to rely on her week in, week out is so pleasing to see because she is a phenomenal talent.”

GettySharpening her game

After an impressive season in the second-tier, it was only natural that Beever-Jones made the step-up to the WSL with her next loan spell, and it was Everton who got the chance to utilise her talents. Having helped Bristol to a third-placed finish the year before, the youngster had been able to showcase her attacking abilities, but a temporary switch to Merseyside helped develop another side of her game entirely.

Though a good footballing team, Everton are not one of the WSL’s big fish, and so there were games that Beever-Jones played in where it was backs to the wall stuff and there was more emphasis on her to track back and help out on the other side of the ball.

“At Chelsea, we’re ball dominant and at Everton, we had to defend a lot more,” she told . "For me at the time, that’s what I needed to work on, so it was a perfect fit for me to go to Everton and work on that part of my game. After the chats I’ve had with Emma and Denise [Reddy, assistant to Hayes], they can see the progression I’ve made, and that was ultimately what the loan was for."

GettyBacking herself

Beever-Jones had the opportunity to return to Everton on loan ahead of this season, and that’s certainly what Toffees boss Brian Sorensen hoped would happen, but the departure of Pernille Harder to Bayern Munich opened up a bit of space in the pecking order in Chelsea’s attack, and their 20-year-old academy product chose to stick around. That decision is paying dividends, too. She’s made 20 appearances for the Blues so far this year, scored seven goals and provided two assists. "She went on loan as an academy player and came back as a first-team player,” Hayes said.

It’s being reflected with her national team, too. Now part of the U23s side, one which has fed a number of promising players into the senior team recently, Beever-Jones was called up to train with the Lionesses during a joint-camp in February, and was even part of the matchday squad for the friendly against Austria, for the first time in her career.

“She's so coachable, that's one thing I will say about her,” Hayes said of the 20-year-old this month. “She will take on any bit of information to get to the next place. I think she had a really good experience with England, she got moved up to the seniors, I think that was really nice for her to meet Sarina [Wiegman] and get some exposure to that. There is only one direction as far as I'm concerned, there's only one place she's going to go, and I think that will be a more regular feature with the England team going forward.”

Tottenham: Spurs could revisit move to sign "brilliant" £30k-p/w player

Tottenham Hotspur could be set to revisit a deal for one of their summer targets, according to a fresh report in the last 48 hours.

Who are Tottenham linked with?

With Ange Postecoglou still searching for a replacement for Harry Kane, Lille’s Jonathan David and Brentford’s Ivan Toney are the two strikers to have been linked with a move in January, but it’s no secret that the boss is in the market for a new centre-back.

The Lilywhites could be set to sanction the sale of Eric Dier who is attracting significant interest from Jose Mourinho at AS Roma, and despite having been credited with an admiration for Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba to replace him, another candidate was wanted in September, and he's already in the Premier League.

On deadline day, Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly was the subject of a £20m bid from Daniel Levy but this offer was turned down by Andoni Iraola’s side who were adamant to hold onto their prized asset, though chiefs might be able to take a second bite at the cherry. The England youth international will be out of contract at the end of the current campaign meaning that the upcoming window is his club’s final opportunity to cash in should they not want to risk losing the 25-year-old for free (Bournemouth contracts).

Lloyd Kelly transfer update

According to Football.london who have shared a transfer update on Lloyd Kelly, Spurs may decide to turn their attention back towards the defender at Bournemouth in January, whilst also providing some news on the pursuit of Chelsea's Conor Gallagher.

"Amid interest in Chelsea's Conor Gallagher and Bournemouth's Lloyd Kelly during the summer market, the football club could potentially revisit moves for the highly-rated duo.

"Whereas a transfer for Gallagher may now be incredibly hard to pull off as he has started all eight of the Blues' league games this season and also captained the side when Reece James and Ben Chilwell have been missing, a deal for Kelly may prove to be a bit more straightforward.

"Having sold Davinson Sanchez to Galatasaray after the closure of the Premier League transfer window, Spurs are short on options at centre-back and Postecoglou is well aware of that fact."

Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly.

How tall is Lloyd Kelly?

Standing at 5 foot 10, Kelly isn’t the tallest for a centre-back, but his height doesn’t stop him from being a rock at the heart of Bournemouth’s backline where he’s currently averaging 2.3 clearances per top-flight game this season (WhoScored – Kelly statistics).

The Bristol-born talent, who is naturally left-footed, is also a versatile operator having previously been deployed at both left-back and right-back alongside his usual role in the middle, so he would be able to easily adapt to the manager’s demands should he ever want to alter his formation or team selection (Transfermarkt – Lloyd Kelly statistics).

Furthermore, Kelly, who earns £30k-per-week (Bournemouth salaries), has once previously beaten the Lilywhites, so if he’s already a “brilliant” player now, as hailed by journalist Josh Bunting, imagine how much more he could flourish under the guidance of Postecoglou.

Ben Brown seals deal on pitch as Jason Gillespie works magic off it

Sussex supporters sitting in the deckchairs at Hove could bask in the Bank Holiday sunshine and the feeling of a first win under their new coach

Bruce Talbot at Hove07-May-20182:49

Durham’s remarkable turnaround

ScorecardIf Sussex supporters seemed reluctant to drag themselves away from the County Ground it was entirely understandable. Why bother trying to shoehorn yourself on to a crowded beach when you can sit in a deckchair on a blissful Bank Holiday afternoon, sup a pint and celebrate a victory that suggests Jason Gillespie is working his magic again?Apart from the addition of Ishant Sharma, who didn’t play in this game, the squad Gillespie inherited is the same that badly underachieved under his predecessor Mark Davis. There is certainly a more positive atmosphere in the dressing room, according to the players. Gillespie arrived with no pre-conceived ideas about some of the younger members of the squad and youngsters like Harry Finch and Ollie Robinson have responded to the freedom he has given them to play without being burdened by the consequences of failure. Here, Finch scored his maiden Championship hundred and Robinson took eight wickets although it was skipper Ben Brown, using all his experience of these relaid Hove pitches which are producing such riveting contests, who led his side to the first win of the Gillespie era just before tea.As Brown and Michael Burgess ticked off the runs Gillespie sat impassively at the back of the players’ balcony. But if he gave the impression of someone in control of his emotions during a tense chase there was no disguising his delight as he waited at the top of the steps to embrace his captain after a three-wicket victory had been secured.”That’s why I’m a fan of county cricket,” he said. “That was a fantastic four days and I’m so proud of the way the guys kept going against what was a very good Middlesex side, led by Browny who was magnificent.”It was a situation Brown revels in. More than the odd ball kept low while one delivery from James Harris which he tried to cut leapt off a length and flew past his face. But it was no minefield. He stayed leg side of the ball to take lbw out of play and improvised impishly at times as he and Burgess put together the match-winning stand of 87.And while Gillespie remained calm, Brown’s guttural roar of delight would have been heard on the crowded seafront when Robinson bunted James Harris down to long leg for the winning boundary. Sussex could probably do with another experienced top-six batsman but that is not such an issue when 10 of their team here has scored a first-class hundred, including nightwatchman Danny Briggs whose stand of 87 for the third wicket with Stiaan van Zyl at the start of the day seemed to have set up a comfortable run chase.Briggs hit Harris for three fours in an over and it was a surprise when he drove Ollie Rayner to short cover. There wasn’t much turn for Rayner’s offbreaks and it was the belated introduction of Australian Hilton Cartwright which gave Middlesex hope. Bowling stump to stump to a run-saving ring field, he removed van Zyl and Luke Wright with successive balls before Harris picked up Finch in the last over before lunch. Brown then took charge and although Burgess was pinned lbw by Dawid Malan, Sussex only needed 15 to win.A second defeat in three is hardly an ideal start to Middlesex’s bid for an immediate return to Division One but it’s worth bearing in mind that they were without six internationals here, for one reason or another. While praising a “fantastic” innings by Brown, captain Malan admitted his team had underperformed with the bat. They will be in the shake-up though.Brown says the challenge for Sussex is to try back this win up at Canterbury in their next game. They are by no means the finished article but the Gillespie effect already seems to be working.
