Leeds ace who's been a "massive signing" would walk into Bielsa's best team

Leeds United head coach Daniel Farke is slowly showing supporters and the wider footballing community that he has what it takes to manage in the Premier League.

It is hard to blame anyone for having doubts over whether or not the German tactician could lead a team to safety in the top-flight, given his record in the division with Norwich City.

As you can see in the table above, Farke won six of his 49 matches in charge of the Canaries in the Premier League before he was sacked after 11 games in the 2021/22 campaign.

However, he has been backed financially in a way that he was not at Carrow Road, which has allowed the Whites to enjoy a solid start to the season.

The West Yorkshire outfit are 15th in the table with eight points in seven games after two wins, two draws, and three defeats, which is a respectable return for the newly-promoted outfit.

Farke is now hoping to emulate the success that Marcelo Bielsa had in the top-flight in the 2020/21 campaign after his side were promoted to the big time.

Ranking Marcelo Bielsa's best Leeds United teams

The Argentine head coach initially joined the club in the summer of 2018 and led the team to a third-placed finish in the Championship, but watched his team lose to Derby County in the semi-finals of the play-offs.

It was a terrific first season at Elland Road for Bielsa, even if it ended in disappointment for the club in the play-offs, but the best was yet to come for the manager.

In the 2019/20 campaign, Leeds racked up 93 points with 28 wins and nine draws in the Championship, ten more points than they managed in the previous season, to earn promotion to the Premier League and the second tier title.

It is, therefore, fair to say that Bielsa’s team in his second season was better than the one he had in his first, as they won ten more points to earn promotion.

However, that promotion-winning team was not the best side that the Argentine tactician had during his time at Elland Road, because of what was achieved in the Premier League the following season.

As you can see in the table above, Leeds were fun to watch as a free-scoring newly-promoted side that fired their way to a top-half finish in the top-flight, which turned out to be Bielsa’s best achievement in his time in West Yorkshire.

He was sacked after picking up 23 points from 26 Premier League games in the 2021/22 season, which should rank as his worst team, followed by his first season, then his second one, and the ninth-placed finish in the top-flight as his best side.

The team in the graphic above was his most-used starting line-up in the 2020/21 campaign in the 4-1-4-1 formation, including stars like Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha.

With Farke and his team looking to emulate the success that Bielsa’s team had in their first season in the big time, would any of the club’s current stars make it into that best XI?

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

As good as Luke Ayling was, and as much as he was a terrific servant for the Whites, there is a case to be made for Jayden Bogle walking into that Bielsa side in the 2020/21 campaign on current form.

Why Jayden Bogle would walk into Marcelo Bielsa's best team

There were some question marks raised over the English full-back’s ability to make the step up to the Premier League this season, because of the Sheffield United team that he was a part of in the 2023/24 season.

Bogle played 34 of his side’s 38 league matches at right-back as the Blades conceded a staggering 104 goals, per Sofascore, the most by any team in a 38-game top-flight season.

However, the 25-year-old star’s start to the current campaign suggests that he is more than capable of delivering quality performances in the Premier League, winning the club’s Player of the Month award for August.

Bogle has started all seven of the club’s matches in the Premier League this season and Leeds rank fifth in the division for xGA (7.9), per FBref, which shows that he is currently part of one of the best defensive units in the division.

Whereas, as aforementioned, Leeds were 16th in the top-flight for xGA with Ayling as their first-choice right-back in Bielsa’s best team at Elland Road.

As you can see in the table above, Bogle’s current defensive numbers topple Ayling’s in the 2020/21 campaign, which may be part of the reason why Farke’s defence is performing better than Bielsa’s did.

On top of that, Ayling did not deliver any assists in that season in the Premier League, which means that Bogle’s current lack of assists in the top-flight should not go against him in this debate.

The former Blades star, who was dubbed “sensational” and a “massive signing” by pundit Micah Richards earlier this year, also delivered more goals and assists combined (ten) last term than Ayling did in the 2019/20 promotion-winning season (eight), per Sofascore, which suggests that he has more potential to excel as an attacking force.

Therefore, there is a genuine case to be made that the 25-year-old star is good enough in the present day to walk into Bielsa’s best team in the ninth-placed Premier League finish.

Hopefully, the current campaign will be a success, with a similarly impressive league finish, and fans will be talking about which players would make it into Farke’s best team in the future.

Tribe, Kellaway extend Gloucestershire's winless title defence

Half-centuries from 21-year-olds Ben Kellaway and Asa Tribe propelled Glamorgan to a 40-run Vitality Blast South Group win over Gloucestershire at Bristol, leaving the trophy holders without a victory in five matches. The visitors posted 189 for six after winning the toss, Kellaway hitting a career-best 53 and Tribe a scintillating 63 not out off 28 balls, with five sixes and five fours. Ajeet Singh Dale claimed three for 17 from four overs. In reply, Gloucestershire stumbled to 149 for nine, Cameron Bancroft making 52 and D’Arcy Short 34. Leg-spinner Mason Crane finished with a career-best four for 20 as the Welsh county secured a fourth group success.Batting at number three, Kellaway found himself facing only the third ball of the game after Will Smale had been bowled by David Payne. It was 27 for two in the fourth over when Kiran Carlson miscued a pull shot off Singh Dale to be pouched at mid-wicket.Kellaway had still moved to 34 by the time the six-over powerplay ended with his side 48 for two. Colin Ingram increased the scoring rate with a straight six off Short’s first delivery and claimed another maximum by smacking Tom Smith over long-off.A pulled six took Kellaway to his maiden T20 fifty off 30 balls, with nine fours, but he fell in the next over advancing down the pitch to off-spinner Ollie Price to present wicketkeeper Bancroft with a simple stumping and Ingram went for 38, taken at fine-leg off Singh Dale.Chris Cooke and Dan Douthwaite fell cheaply, the former superbly caught one-handed by Price at long-on. But Tribe ensured Glamorgan of a competitive total with a late blitz that saw 22 come off the 19th over, bowled by Smith and a further 19 off the last, sent down by Payne.Glamorgan opted to take pace off the ball as early as the second over of Gloucestershire’s reply, delivered by left-arm spinner Imad Wasim. Bancroft got the scoreboard ticking with a four and a six off the first two balls of the third over, bowled by Timm van der Gugten.Miles Hammond fell for a ten-ball duck, sweeping a catch to deep mid-wicket off Imad, and by the end of the powerplay Gloucestershire were anchored on 30 for one. Bancroft and Short put together a stand of 63 without ever cutting loose and when Short top-edged a sweep off Crane to be caught at short fine leg the hosts were 76 for two in the 12th over.Price fell lbw to a full delivery from Crane and Jack Taylor was caught at fine leg by Ingram off Ned Leonard before Ben Charlesworth suffered a second successive first ball duck when driving a catch to long-off to give Crane his third wicket.Bancroft had taken 43 balls over his half-century and when he top- edged a reverse sweep of Crane to be caught at short fine-leg the outcome was beyond doubt, despite a late assault by Graeme van Burren, which brought him 32 runs off 14 balls.

Man Utd plotting to kick star out and do one of the headline deals of 2026

Manchester United have made some intriguing signings this summer as they look to improve under Ruben Amorim and could soon move for an exciting star who is set to be a free agent in 2026.

Manchester United's goalkeeper situation remains unresolved

Truthfully, Manchester United haven’t had an easy start to the campaign and their performances have delivered mixed results, albeit a last-gasp 3-2 victory over Burnley last weekend was a much-needed development at Old Trafford.

At the time, Amorim expressed sympathy for Altay Bayindir after his bumpy performance between the sticks, which may be his last for quite some time after Senne Lammens’ £18.2 million arrival at Old Trafford from Royal Antwerp.

He said in his post-match press conference: “Guys, they are humans. Manchester United, everything is (huge). Everybody talks about the goalkeeper. And you can see, I can change the goalkeeper in the situations that happen. We are in that moment. I think it is hard to be a Manchester United goalkeeper in this moment.

“But if you look at the first goal, we can defend it better. We suffered a quite similar goal against Fulham, because we don’t do the full rotation of the team when the ball is on the other side. All these small things have nothing to do with the goalkeeper.”

Andre Onana has opened talks over a move to the Saudi Pro League and could be set to move on to a new challenge, leaving the Red Devils to undergo a change of the guard in a key position at Old Trafford.

Neither Bayindir or Onana are in favour at the minute and reinforcements will be required should either leave the club, which could prompt the Red Devils to go all out for an elite stopper in 2026.

Manchester United plot showstopping move for Mike Maignan

According to reports in Spain, Manchester United will look to launch a showstopping move for Mike Maignan in 2026 once his contract expires at AC Milan, when his future will be one of the ‘headline’ deals of the next summer window.

With the Red Devils plotting to ‘kick out’ Onana, the France international is seen as a ‘masterstroke’ signing without the need to pay a transfer fee, evidenced by the fact he kept 61 clean sheets in 166 appearances for the Serie A giants.

Man Utd's most expensive signings of all time

A number of their additions haven’t lived up to expectations.

Sharing the same ESN agency as Manchester United winger Mbeumo, per Transfermarkt, the Cayenne-born stopper has retained a 60% save percentage in the Italian top-flight this term, though he could now be primed for a move to Old Trafford less than a year from now.

His current employers are said to be under pressure due to his contract situation and external interest from others in his services, something that is only likely to grow the longer he refuses to put pen to paper on new terms at San Siro.

Winners and losers from around Europe's biggest leagues: Xabi Alonso hurting after humiliating Madrid derby drubbing but Massimiliano Allegri silencing haters by putting AC Milan back on top of Serie A

Liverpool weren't the only European team to lose their 100 percent record this weekend. Over in Italy, Napoli slipped to second in the Serie A table after being beaten 2-1 by a Christian Pulisici-inspired AC Milan at San Siro.

However, Bayern Munich maintained their flawless start to the defence of their Bundesliga crown by hammering Werder Bremen on Friday evening, with Harry Kane making more history in the process, while French titleholders Paris Saint-Germain returned to winning ways after losing their perfect record in Marseille last week by cruising past Auxerre at the Parc des Princes.

Of course, these weren't the only major talking points of the latest round of matches across the continent. Below, GOAL runs through the biggest winners and losers from this weekend's action in Europe's top leagues…

Getty Images SportWINNER: Julian Alvarez

Julian Alvarez certainly doesn't lack bottle. He didn't think twice about stepping up to the mark when Atletico Madrid were awarded a spot-kick early in the second half of Saturday's dramatic derby at the Metropolitano.

The last time he had taken a penalty against Real, his desperately unfortunate 'double-touch' had effectively cost Atletico a place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. On this occasion, though, Alvarez kept his footing – and his cool – to put his side 3-2 ahead.

Twelve minutes later, Alvarez struck again – this time from a fantastic free-kick to make it five goals in two Liga games for a striker that had drawn a blank in his four previous outings.

"I had been getting chances," the Argentine pointed out after Atletic's stunning 5-2 triumph. "It would have been more worrying if I hadn't been, so I was relaxed. I just had to work on being more efficient, take the chances that came."

He certainly did that against both Real and Rayo Vallecano, resulting in Atletico doubling their points haul to climb to fourth in the table. Perhaps even more significantly, Alvarez's spectacular return to form also went a long way towards quelling speculation that he is unhappy at Atleti.

"I feel very looked after," he insisted on Saturday. "I just work every day to improve and help the team. The season is very long, still a lot to play for." However, the World Cup winner did also add: "I just think short-term, and no further."

Alvarez, then, remains a player well worth watching – for a variety of reasons.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportLOSER: Xabi Alonso

Diego Simeone was overcome with emotion after Atletico's derby demolition of Real Madrid. With less than 10 minutes to go in Wednesday's clash with Rayo Vallecano, the Rojiblancos were 2-1 down and in very real danger of extending their worst-ever start to a season under Simeone. However, after an Alvarez-inspired late comeback against Rayo, and a historic rout of Real, Simeone was shedding happy tears on Saturday night.

"I cried at the end because there were many emotions inside me," the notoriously aggressive Argentine admitted. "The season started in a very complicated fashion and there is a lot of effort from many people who are not seen, so this felt wonderful."

Inevitably, Xabi Alonso was experiencing very different emotions after he and his players suffered a humiliating derby drubbing.

"We are hurting, as are the fans," the former Bayer Leverkusen boss said. "It was a derby and it's a deserved defeat. It was a bad game. We didn’t start well, we didn't play well collectively, with and without the ball."

Alonso had, of course, won his first six Liga games as Real's new boss but there had been a nagging suspicion that the brilliance of Kylian Mbappe up front was papering over the cracks in Madrid's midfield and defence; the derby illustrated why.

The French forward drew los Blancos level with a characteristically clinical first-half finish but stormed down the tunnel at full-time, clearly and understandably frustrated with a dreadfully disjointed display from the visitors.

Restoring the fit-again but tactically ill-disciplined Jude Bellingham to the starting line-up was, in hindsight, a very premature decision – one that Alonso had to defend in his post-match press conference – while Madrid's obvious vulnerability in the air was belatedly and brutally exposed by Atleti.

Alonso was right to point out that Real remain in "a construction phase" – but it's clear that the project is not quite as far along as some pundits and supporters had initially claimed.

Getty Images SportWINNER: Harry Kane

There has been a lot of talk in recent days about Harry Kane returning to Tottenham Hotspur. However, while Thomas Frank publicly admitted that he "would like to see Kane back" in north London, he also predicted that the England captain would "probably stay at Bayern and continue performing well" – and it's difficult to disagree, on either count. Kane looks happy in Munich, because he's playing brilliantly in Munich.

As well as finally ending his trophy drought by firing Bayern to last season's Bundesliga title, Kane has also smashed a succession of goalscoring records. He broke another on Friday night – and it might just be his most impressive to date.

With his brace in the 4-0 win over Werder Bremen, Kane made it 100 goals for Bayern in just 104 appearances. No player across Europe's 'Big 5' leagues has become a centurion at a single club in fewer matches since 2000 – not even Cristiano or Erling Haaland (both of whom achieved the feat in 105 games, for Real Madrid and Manchester City, respectively).

"From a personal point of view, 100 goals for Bayern Munich, I'm extremely proud of that," Kane wrote on . "I'm privileged to play for this great club and to do it in record time, 104 games as well, is for sure something I'm proud of."

Even more encouragingly for Bayern, Kane insisted the idea of rejoining Spurs hadn't entered his mind. "I'm really happy here," he stated. "I have two years left on my contract. I'm enjoying every moment. [Returning to England] is not in my thought process.

"I'm enjoying it with the team, with the coach, and hopefully we continue to be successful." If Kane keeps scoring at this ridiculous rate, there's every chance they will be.

AFPLOSER: The Allegri haters

Massimiliano Allegri's 'the ends justifies the means' approach to football is not for everyone. Even at Juventus, where the mantra is 'winning is the only thing that counts', many supporters were glad to see the back of the coach after his dreadfully dull second spell in Turin. Consequently, some Milan fans were unsure about their club's decision to rehire Allegri during the summer. As the old Italian saying goes, 'Reheated soup is never good.'

However, 14 years after Allegri won a Scudetto with Milan, there's now talk of him repeating the feat – which is remarkable, really, given he oversaw an embarrassing loss at home to Cremonese on the opening weekend of the new Serie A season.

Since then, though, the Rossoneri have reeled off four successive wins, including a wonderfully spirited 2-1 victory over Napoli on Sunday night that saw Milan move ahead of the Italian champions on goal difference at the summit of the Serie A standings.

It's still very early days, of course, but credit where it's due, Milan were as good going forward during the first half of their fully-deserved victory over Antonio Conte's side as they were stubborn in the second – particularly after the dismissal of Pervis Estupinan.

So, while doubts remain over the true strength of Allegri's new side, it's well worth remembering that Milan don't have any European football to worry about this term, meaning talk of a title challenge maybe isn't that fanciful…

Australia look to adapt to conditions quicker with the bat after surviving another scare

Alana King bailed them out with the ball and says some adjustments will be made after a second sub par batting display

Australia keep finding a way to beat England, thanks in large part to the brilliance of Alana King and the bowlers, but the legspinner feels the batting group can make some adjustments ahead of the third ODI in Hobart after an extraordinary collapse almost cost them the game in Melbourne on Tuesday.Australia hold a four-point lead in the multi-format Ashes series after winning the first two ODIs. In the second at the Junction Oval, they defended 181 despite losing 8 for 49 after being 131 for 2 batting first, with King claiming 4 for 25 with the ball. The bowlers have been holding their end of the bargain, with the spin duo of King and Ash Gardner causing England no end of problems.Related

But Australia’s batting has been shaky. They have been bowled out inside 50 overs in two of their last three ODIs and they lost six wickets chasing just 205 in the first ODI against England and were fortunate not to lose more.King said the batters will have a conversation about adjusting their methods ahead of the third ODI in Hobart on Friday.”I think it’s maybe just adapting to conditions a lot better and trying to find a way of scoring when it’s quite tricky,” she said after the second ODI. “They’ve got some world-class bowlers – [Sophie] Ecclestone is the No. 1 bowler in the world at the moment – so just trying to find ways to still be positive against her and even [Lauren] Filer at the top. You know she’s got the raw pace and aggression, so there’s no doubt there’ll be some conversations had between now and the next one in Hobart. But I’m sure we’ll adapt as quick as we can.”Australia have been able to adapt with the ball in both games so far. They have been shocked by the amount of spin on offer at both North Sydney Oval and the Junction Oval in Melbourne, and King and Gardner have thrived as a result.”I’m pretty stoked that there’s a bit of bounce and spin, a lot of purchase as well,” King said. “I’m going to stick to my strengths and that’s still bowling it really well, ripping it out of my hands, and get as much as I can out of the wicket. That’s just finding my pace, but more importantly, finding my length.”King’s length control was impeccable throughout her spell in the second game. Her delivery to knock over Danni Wyatt-Hodge was the perfect legbreak. It drifted into leg stump, pitched and spun sharply past Wyatt-Hodge’s front-foot defence and hit the top of off. Wyatt-Hodge wore a look of complete bemusement as King and Australia celebrated. But even King wasn’t sure how much it had turned.”I’ve not really seen it, so I’ll let you know when I’ve had a couple of looks at it,” King said. “She’s a pretty dangerous player, so to see the back of her pretty early on was pretty special.”King is in a purple patch of form after barely bowling in the first four ODIs she played this summer. King bowled just 13.1 overs across the three-match series against India in December, taking four wickets at 17.50 and a strike rate of 19.75.But in her last three ODIs, she has bowled 26 overs for figures of 3 for 34, 2 for 35 and 4 for 25. She has not played a T20I since the 2023 World Cup final, with Georgia Wareham Australia’s preferred legspinner in that format. It would be a surprise if King is not considered for the T20Is against England in this series and she’s certainly willing to put her hand up.”I’m grateful and very privileged whenever I get to put on the jersey,” King said. “I absolutely love it, and I love this group, and I’ll do anything to help this group win and put us in good situations, I guess. And if that’s bowling some hard overs, I’m more than happy to do that for the skipper and do what’s best for the team. So absolutely love playing for Australia, and there’s no doubt I love the Ashes as well.”

ECB Reporters Network30-Jun-2024Sri Lankan pace bowler Vishwa Fernando spearheaded a ruthless Yorkshire bowling performance to skittle Derbyshire for 76 on the opening day of the Vitality County Championship match at Chesterfield. On a challenging Queen’s Park pitch, Fernando took 5 for 30 and Jordan Thompson claimed 4 for 31 as Derbyshire subsided in less than 28 overs. It was the third lowest score against Yorkshire in the championship this century and the visitors turned the screw with James Wharton racing to a maiden first-class hundred from only 101 balls. When bad light ended play, Wharton was 116 not out and Johnny Tattersall unbeaten on 41 with Yorkshire 283 for 5, a commanding lead of 207.Derbyshire’s decision to bat first on a green pitch under cloud cover was questionable and the hosts soon had reason to regret it as Yorkshire’s seamers ran through them.Ben Coad celebrated his return from a back injury by removing Mitch Wagstaff lbw with a full length ball in his first over and there were signs of what was to come as he and Fernando repeatedly beat the bat.Luis Reece and Brooke Guest managed to survive for the best part of 14 overs but once Reece edged Fernando low to first slip, Derbyshire fell apart.Although there was enough in the pitch for Fernando and Thompson to exploit, it was a feeble batting display with only four players making double figures.Thompson beat Guest’s defensive push, Fernando removed Wayme Madsen with an inswinging yorker and then trapped Aneurin Donald on the crease with his next ball.Ross Whiteley survived the hat-trick but when David Lloyd was lbw playing across the line at Thompson, Derbyshire had lost five wickets for 10 runs in 23 balls.Rain provided Derbyshire with some respite but after lunch was taken early, the procession continued.Whiteley was brilliantly caught one handed at gully by Thompson who then had Alex Thomson taken low down at third slip before Fernando plucked out Sam Conners middle stump with another inswinging yorker.Zak Chappell struck some defiant blows, including a straight driven six off Thompson who had the last word by having him caught at second slip.Derbyshire’s total was the lowest at Chesterfield since they were bowled out for 57 by Leicestershire in 1989 and to have any chance of staying in the game, they needed early wickets.Yorkshire’s attack had reaped the benefits of maintaining a consistent, probing line but Derbyshire lacked the same discipline, bowling too short or too full.By the time Reece had Fin Bean lbw, Yorkshire had reached 61 in the 13th over and although Adam Lyth drove back a return catch to Reece, the visitors steadily pressed home their advantage.Shan Masood produced some elegant strokes before he played across the line at Daryn Dupavillon and after George Hill and Matthew Revis went cheaply, Wharton grew in confidence to dominate the bowling. After reaching 50 off 63 balls, he pulled Dupavillon for six and launched Thomson over wide long on for another before driving Reece for his 18th four to reach three figures. With Tattersall, he took the game further away from Derbyshire as the pair shared an unbroken stand of 118 on a day of total Yorkshire dominance.

Approach made: Nottingham Forest enquire to sign "underrated" £20m forward

Nottingham Forest are now making enquiries over a summer deal for an “underrated” forward, who is expected to have an asking price of around £20m, according to a report.

Nottingham Forest gearing up for European adventure

Having managed to qualify for a European competition for the first time since 1996, Forest may need to improve their squad depth in the upcoming transfer window, and they have now started to identify potential targets in a range of different positions.

Despite missing out on Champions League due to the 1-0 defeat against Chelsea on the final day, the Tricky Trees may still be in a strong position to attract quality players from some top clubs, courtesy of securing qualification for the Europa Conference League.

With Morgan Gibbs-White being heavily linked with a move away from the City Ground, however, it may be particularly important to bring in new attacking options, who are capable of providing goals and assists on a regular basis.

According to a report from GiveMeSport, Nottingham Forest have a new target in mind who could fit the bill in that regard, having now started to make enquiries about a potential summer deal for SC Freiburg forward Ritsu Doan.

Forest are now stepping up their pursuit of Doan, but there could be competition for his signature from Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt, with the Bundesliga sides known to be admirers.

Frankfurt are currently preparing an offer for the Freiburg star, so the Tricky Trees may have to move quickly if they are to secure his signature, with an offer in the region of £20m likely to be deemed acceptable by the forward’s current employers.

"Underrated" Doan impressing in the Bundesliga

The Japanese winger enjoyed an impressive 2024-25 campaign in Germany, picking up a combined 19 goals and assists in 36 matches in all competitions, during which time he also received praise from football talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Not only that, but the 26-year-old is also willing and able to pitch in defensively, ranking in the 92nd percentile for tackles per 90, and the 95th percentile for clearances over the past year, when compared to other wingers and attacking midfielders.

As such, Doan could be a bargain signing for Nottingham Forest at just £20m this summer, at which point Nuno Espirito Santo may have to bring in at least one new winger, amid recent reports that Manchester United are now considering a move for Callum Hudson-Odoi.
