Southampton and Sport Republic set to appoint "top level" permanent manager

Southampton and Sport Republic have seemingly made their permanent St Mary’s manager decision during the international break.

Southampton's manager targets

The Saints are yet to announce Will Still’s full-time successor after parting ways with the 33-year-old following the 2-0 defeat to Preston North End earlier this month.

A number of candidates have been linked with the St Mary’s vacancy, including former Wolves manager Gary O’Neil, Stoke City’s Mark Robins and even Frank Lampard at league leaders Coventry City. There have also been suggestions that former West Brom and Middlesbrough boss Tony Mowbray could be an option on a short-term basis.

Tonda Eckert has been in caretaker charge of the Saints following Still’s exit, recording back-to-back Championship victories against QPR and Sheffield Wednesday to steer Southampton clear of the relegation zone.

He was quizzed on taking the role on a permanent basis prior to the win over the Owls, to which Eckert said:

Eckert is still in his role as interim manager during the international break, and by the looks of things, it could get even better for the 32-year-old.

Southampton on course to appoint Eckert as full-time manager

According to talkSPORT, ‘Eckert is going to be given the job full-time’ at St Mary’s after impressing in his two games in charge.

The Saints are seriously considering their caretaker and appear to have made the decision, should this claim prove accurate.

Eckert has already impressed supporters with back-to-back victories, and he has also come in for praise from Saints star Finn Azaz, who called him “top level”.

“Since his first meeting, I was really impressed. It hasn’t been drastic changes. He’s been able to watch from outside and tweak a few things. He has been able to instil his message and new energy and his drive and a new voice. As I say, it hasn’t been drastic changes.

“We are playing in the same shape almost. We went out there with similar personnel, [there were] just a few tweaks. I would like to thank him. He’s been top level.”

Jose Altuve Emotionally Advocates for Alex Bregman to Be Brought Back to Astros

Alex Bregman potentially played his last game for the Houston Astros on Wednesday as the team lost in the wild-card to the Detroit Tigers.

The longtime Astros third baseman is set to become an unrestricted free agent this winter, and it's possible Houston won't pick him back up. However, many fans and even his teammates hope the Astros make an offer to him.

Jose Altuve was especially emotional after Wednesday's game, giving Bregman a big hug on the field and telling him "You're coming back."

Altuve spoke to media after the game and advocated for his teammate to be brought back to the organization next season. He can't imagine not playing on the same team as Bregman.

"Now, it's time to make it happen," Altuve said. "We're not going to be the same organization without him. In my mind, there's not a chance this is the last one."

Bregman admitted he hadn't really had time to process Wednesday potentially being his final game in an Astros uniform. He tweeted out a simple message to fans later in the night: "Thank you Houston."

Altuve's been an Astro his entire MLB career, as has Bregman. The two stars have been teammates since Bregman joined the Astros in 2016. They've won two World Series titles together.

Samit Patel serves Notts a reminder of his class

Veteran spinner gets one over old club with three matchwinning wickets

Derbyshire Falcons broke their duck for the season and recorded a first Blast victory at Trent Bridge since 2013 as Samit Patel delivered a reminder to his former club that he can be a match-winner even at the age of 40.The veteran left-arm spinner, who took 208 T20 wickets in 21 seasons in Nottinghamshire colours, claimed another three for 14 as the Falcons consigned the Outlaws to a third straight defeat on their own turf, going down by 46 runs as they finished on 153 for nine chasing a target of 200.Opener Aneurin Donald’s 73 off 34 balls gave the Falcons a platform that was ultimately exploited by Brooke Guest (37 off 24) and Ross Whitely (35 off 16) in an unbroken sixth-wicket partnership of 65 of 33 balls out of 199 for five, after leg spinner Calvin Harrison had taken three for 32.Home skipper Joe Clarke posted his third half-century of the season but with Matt Montgomery’s 27 the next best score, his side were never in serious contention, leaving them with just two wins from their opening six matches. Afghanistan’s teenage spinner Mohammad Ghazanfar (two for 26) and on-loan Fynn Hudson-Prentice (two for 38) backed up Patel with the ball.Put in, Derbyshire were 61 without loss in their batting powerplay, Donald riding his luck profitably as he survived chances on five and 39.Harrison found some turn to bowl Caleb Jewell with his first ball and was involved again as Donald, having raised his sixes tally to five after going past fifty in 25 balls, found the all-rounder’s big hands at wide midwicket off left-arm spinner Liam Patterson-White, who returned the favour as Wayne Madsen holed out to cover, giving Harrison a second wicket.Rob Lord, on his Blast debut, picked up his maiden wicket as Patel failed to clear mid-off before Harrison had Martin Andersson leg before sweeping. But Guest and Whitely, the latter smiting two sixes as Australian pacer Sams conceded 30 in his last two overs, took Derbyshire to their highest total of the season.A stiff task quickly became harder for Notts as Ghazanfar removed Lyndon James, caught at midwicket, and Jack Haynes, leg before, in his first seven deliveries before Freddie McCann somehow managed to shovel a ball from Fynn Hudson-Prentice over his own shoulder and on to the stumps, leaving them 22 for three before a horrible moment at the start of the sixth over saw wicketkeeper Guest and Ghazanfar, running in from mid-on, collide going for the same catch off Clarke on 25, with neither man holding on, after which a dazed Ghazanfar left the field, thankfully only temporarily.Clarke was dropped again at extra cover on 46, the shot taking him to his third fifty of the season, but a 55-run partnership with Matt Montgomery (27 off 19) ended when the latter was bowled by Patel, who celebrated extravagantly as the Notts skipper slapped a wide delivery straight to Pat Brown on the extra cover boundary at 99 for five, picking up his third in his next over as Tom Moores missed.Sams was caught on the cover boundary, Patterson-White and Lord falling to Brown in the last over as Notts finished on 153 for nine.

Rehan Ahmed stars for Leicestershire as Lancashire's winning start ends

Legspinner claims 3 for 16 to breach Old Trafford’s defences in five-wicket win

ECB Reporters Network04-Jun-2025Rehan Ahmed put Lancashire Lightning in a spin with a superb three for 16 from four overs and later a crucial 27 as Leicestershire Foxes breached fortress Emirates Old Trafford to claim an impressive Vitality Blast victory.Legspinning allrounder Ahmed is due to link up with England for their T20I series against the West Indies later this week, and he claimed season’s best figures across all formats, limiting the Lightning to 145 for seven on a used pitch. He bamboozled a home batting line-up which saw opener Keaton Jennings top-score with 39 off 19 balls before Chris Green added a crucial 36 not out off 29 late on.The 20-year-old then came in with Leicestershire’s chase in limbo at 47 for three in the sixth over and contributed again to a five-wicket win with nine balls remaining, hitting two fours and a six in 23 balls. The Foxes have now won two and lost one at the start of the North Group, while Lancashire’s three-game winning start came to an end with a first defeat. In T20 history, Lancashire have won 89 of 124 matches at Emirates Old Trafford, losing only 31. But Leicestershire are the most successful visiting county here, winning on six occasions since 2003.Six of the seven home wickets fell to spin, giving the Red Rose, who later employed four spinners, a taste of their own medicine.Ahmed bowled Michael Jones, Australian overseas Ashton Turner and Tom Hartley as the score fell to 114 for seven after 17 overs.Left-armer Liam Trevaskis also impressed with two for 17 and captain Louis Kimber struck once with his part-time offies.Kimber made the initial breakthrough when Luke Wells pulled to deep midwicket – 15 for one in the second over.Captain Jennings then advanced Lancashire to 45 for one in the fifth over. He drilled Kimber for an arrow straight six added to six boundaries before slicing Matt Salisbury’s seam to short third. From there, wickets fell regularly. At its worst, Lancashire were 95 for six in the 14th over.Aussie all-rounder Green then accumulated his 36 with only one six and a comical all-run four off the last ball of the innings which came as the ball pin-balled around Leicestershire’s fielders.Green then played a big part at the start of the Foxes’ chase, striking twice with his off-spin as the score slipped to 47 for three in the sixth over.He trapped Rishi Patel lbw and bowled Shan Masood. Sandwiched in between, Sir James Anderson had a pulling Sol Budinger caught at deep backward square-leg.But Ahmed was to the fore once more.Having come in at number five, he saw captain Kimber fall for a quick-fire 40 off 22 balls to Hartley’s left-arm spin – 63 for four in the eighth over – before lofting Charlie Barnard’s spin over cover for six.And while Barnard later got revenge by bowling him, the damage had been done in a 59-run partnership with busy wicketkeeper-batter Ben Cox, who was also excellent for a run-a-ball 38 not out.

Roelof van der Merwe agrees early Somerset exit

Cult figure released from final year of contract to spend more time with family in South Africa

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Mar-2025Roelof van der Merwe has left Somerset by mutual consent after agreeing an early exit from his contract, bringing a long association with the county to an end.Van der Merwe first played for Somerset in 2011 as an overseas player, then returned as a local in 2016 after switching national allegiance from South Africa to the Netherlands. He has played for the county 185 times across formats and was due to return for white-ball cricket in 2025, but has terminated his deal ahead of the next season. He said in a club statement that, at 40, he felt unable to commit to spending the summer in the UK and away from his family, who are based in South Africa. Van der Merwe still intends to play internationally for the Netherlands.”With the English white-ball season now running from May until September, that’s a long time to be away from my wife and children,” van der Merwe said. “At this stage of my career, I feel that it’s time to put my family first whilst still looking to pursue my international career. I spoke with the club, and they agreed to release me one year early and I’m grateful for that.”There’s a great group of players here and we had some great success together. Somerset will always have a special place in my heart, and I’ve loved every minute. The club, the members and supporters have been phenomenal. Somerset hasn’t just been about cricket for me, it’s been a real part of my life for nine years.”Van der Merwe was part of two trophy-winning squads at Somerset, playing in their win over Hampshire in the 2019 Royal London Cup final and making 10 appearances as they won the T20 Blast in 2023. Last year, he played 12 games in the Blast, including all three knockout games as Somerset lost to rivals Gloucestershire in the final. His finest moment in a Somerset shirt came in 2017, when he walked in at 22 for 5 in a chase of 291 in a televised 50-over game against Surrey and thrashed 165 not out off 152 balls. Another highlight was a 15-ball 48 not out to rescue a three-wicket win in a rain-reduced T20 game at Bristol in 2022.Andy Hurry, Somerset’s director of cricket, said that the club “totally respect and understand” van der Merwe’s decision. “To say that he has been a tremendous servant to the club would be something of an understatement,” Hurry said. “To put it simply, he is the absolute personification of the model professional.”During his time with Somerset, he has put in countless match-winning contributions with the bat, the ball and in the field. His work ethic has been exemplary from day one and he is a genuine role model as well as being an incredibly popular member of the dressing room.”Roelof will rightly be remembered as one of our most important players of recent years and everyone associated with the club wishes him all the very best as he seeks to end his career positively with the Netherlands. He will forever receive a warm welcome at the Cooper Associates County Ground.”

Florian Wirtz was right to reject Bayern Munich for Liverpool as Michael Ballack admits Bundesliga not a 'challenge' compared to Premier League

Wirtz completed a blockbuster €137 million (£116m/$149m) move from Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool this summer, turning down the chance to join Bayern. The Bundesliga champions explored a €100m (£84m/$109m) package but ultimately lost out, as the 22-year-old opted to test himself in the Premier League. Former Chelsea and Bayern star Ballack has now backed Wirtz’s decision, insisting the Bundesliga is "no longer a true challenge" for top-tier players.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The ex-Leverkusen star's decision reflects a growing trend of elite German talent bypassing the Bavarians for opportunities abroad. Ballack pointed out that the Premier League has long since overtaken the Bundesliga in competitiveness and global prestige, meaning players like Wirtz and see more value in testing themselves in England. The Reds' big-money gamble highlights their intent to return to Europe’s elite, while Bayern’s struggles to lure homegrown stars underline a worrying decline in their pulling power.

  • WHAT MICHAEL BALLACK SAID

Ballack told : "Let’s take Wirtz as an example: Does it make sense for him and his development to play in the Bundesliga for Bayern for another two or three years? Of course, he wins championships there. But is the Bundesliga still a challenge for him at the highest level? No, because the Bundesliga was overtaken by the Premier League years ago. That’s the reality. That’s why it’s generally no longer as attractive for the absolute top players."

Man Utd now keen to sign £20m star who Michael Carrick called "terrific"

As they prepare to step up their chase for Benjamin Sesko, Manchester United are now also reportedly keen to sign a talented midfielder who former star Michael Carrick labelled “terrific”.

Man Utd readying first Sesko offer

Despite missing out on European football last season, Manchester United have maintained their attraction this summer and have welcomed both Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo as a result. Both attacking additions had other options, but chose to hand Ruben Amorim two instant upgrades in his Old Trafford frontline.

It’s a decision which some may question, but one that Sesko could now follow. According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United are now readying their first bid to sign the RB Leipzig star, who favours a move to the Red Devils over Newcastle United this summer.

Whilst many have suggested that United have simply won the bidding war to sign players such as Cunha and Mbeumo, Amorim has insisted that money has not been the deciding factor.

He told reporters: “Cunha and Bryan, they had different solutions [offers]. They had Champions League offers. And they wanted to come here. People that say that they come here because of the money… that is a lie. That I know for sure. So, I’m really happy with that.

“That is the key point. They have to want to come here. I think what we can do to the fans is that we want players who have proved [themselves] already.”

Even with Sesko potentially following suit, however, Manchester United’s business may not be done there. Reports are now suggesting that they’ve also set their sights on signing a midfield talent this summer.

Man Utd keen to sign Hayden Hackney

According to GiveMeSport, Manchester United are now keen to sign Hayden Hackney ahead of interest from Tottenham Hotspur this summer. The Middlesbrough midfielder is keen to leave the Teesside club and is willing to wait it out for the likes of Spurs and potentially United to come calling in a deal worth around £20m.

Of course, if the Red Devils want to know more about the England U21 star then they could turn towards Michael Carrick for answers. The former Old Trafford star worked with Hackney for three years at Middlesbrough and was often full of praise for the 23-year-old.

Hayden Hackney for Middlesbrough.

The former Boro boss told reporters after the midfielder signed a new contract at the club in 2022: “I think it’s the right thing, it’s fair from both sides,” said the head coach.

“Hayden has been terrific since I came and the couple of games before that he played really well. That’s kind of how it works, you get rewarded for your good work. He fully deserves it. He’s been a credit to himself and his family with the way he’s handled it.”
