After Cerny: Rangers agree move to sign £58k-p/w ex-Europa League winner

Rangers continue to strengthen their ranks as they look to hand Philippe Clement a side capable of going one step further than last season, and have had an offer accepted to sign a decorated veteran.

Rangers transfer news

There is plenty going on at Ibrox following Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup heartbreak last season, which saw them beaten by Old Firm rivals Celtic to both trophies. So far, much of the transfer business has been out, with Sam Lammers completing a move to FC Twente after a successful loan spell with fellow Dutch side Utrecht in their most recent departure.

Todd Cantwell has also handed in a transfer request as he looks to force through a move away, while Connor Goldson is in the final stages of agreeing a move to Cypriot side Aris.

Quizzed on potential new additions, the Rangers boss admitted he expected fresh faces between now and the Scottish Premiership getting back underway but refused to be drawn on who that could be.

Clement said: "I'm confident of that [new signings] because everyone is working hard for that. There's a good possibility, but no guarantees. There has to be a signature from three sides – the player, the other team and from us. It's working every day with the players who are available to make them better and to give them experience in pre-season of course. Because of the Euros everything starts slower. You see that with several teams where nothing has happened yet.

One of those duly arrived in the shape of Vaclav Cerny, who has moved to Ibrox on loan for the 2024/25 campaign and has brought plenty of excitement with him despite a tough season in Germany.

“It is a very nice day for me. I am happy to be here and I can’t wait to get started", he told the Rangers media team.

“Obviously from the first talks with the manager, it gave me a very good feeling and from there on I would say it went pretty fast. I was happy about the contact and just couldn’t wait to come down here and be here and experience it all.”

Meanwhile, there are also reports that Rangers have tabled an offer for Atletico Nacional defender Edier Ocampo, who is considered one of the brightest talents in Colombia. Now, they have agreed a deal for a player at the other end of his playing career.

Rangers agree Joan Jordan deal

That comes courtesy of reports relayed by The Daily Record, who claim that Rangers have agreed a deal to sign experienced midfielder Joan Jordan from Sevilla.

Rangers have struck gold on Beale signing who's worth more than Cifuentes

Philippe Clement has a player in his squad who has seen their value risen…

ByRoss Kilvington Jul 28, 2024

The Spanish midfielder, who has appeared 198 times for Sevilla, turned 30 earlier this month but could bring a wealth of experience to the Ibrox engine room. He has been part of the Sevilla squad that lifted the Europa League on two occasions, most recently in 2022/23, where his side defeated Roma in the final.

And a deal to bring him to Rangers is progressing, the report states. They relay claims that "a loan for the season with a €5million option to buy next summer has been deemed acceptable" by the Spanish outfit, who are under pressure to offload players to comply with financial fair play.

Now, they are waiting on Jordan's green light, with Rangers likely to have to cover his £58,000-a-week wage.

It is certainly a different calibre of signings to that which the Ibrox faithful have become used to in recent seasons, with both Cerny and Jordan arguably in the prime of their careers and potentially ready to lend their talents to Clement's upcoming title effort.

Legendary frontman Daei found the target on 108 occasions for Iran between 1993 and 2006. He would remain at the top of that chart until September 2021, when Portuguese sensation Ronaldo set about rewriting the history books.

Ronaldo is still going strong at 39 years of age, with his international goal tally taken to 135 and counting, with Daei telling of relinquishing a record to the all-time great: “Breaking records is part of football, and I’m happy that a player like Ronaldo was the one to do it. He’s an exceptional and hard-working player, and he’s proven those qualities throughout his career. Ronaldo is a huge role model for young players, and his record shows that anything is possible.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Daei has been nudged down to third on the all-time list after seeing eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi reach 112 goals for Argentina. There is, however, plenty to be proud of when it comes to forming part of an elite club alongside two of the finest talents to have ever played the game.

Daei added: “Messi is a genius and a unique player. He has incredible vision and game intelligence, and watching him play is always a joy. Messi is one of the greatest in history and, like Ronaldo, he inspires millions of people around the world.”

He went on to say of being one of only three men to hit a century of international goals: “It’s a great honour. Football has always been a big part of my life, and being alongside players like Ronaldo and Messi makes all my hard work worth it. The achievement is more than just a number to me. It’s a testament to the love I have for the game.”

After playing an important role in Real Madrid winning the Champions League and La Liga in the 2023-24 campaign, Vinicius Jr. hoped to bag the prestigious Ballon d'Or for the first time in his career. However, on Monday in Paris, Manchester City's Rodri was handed over the Golden Ball instead. Real Madrid learned about the outcome hours before the ceremony, and the club decided to boycott the awards as a mark of protest.

After receiving support from his club, Vinicius' Brazil team-mates have also come forward to show solidarity with the winger. Juventus star Douglas Luiz wrote on Instagram: "We all know who really deserved to win the Ballon d’Or. We are all with you, brother, we will do everything so that you can win this ‘Ballon d’Or’ one day. I love you."

Meanwhile, Tottenham forward Richarlison posted: "All of us who live soccer look forward to the individual awards with great anxiety each season. Today, all Brazilians who love football woke up expecting to see another player from our country win an award for the best in the world after so long. Unfortunately, by criteria no one can understand, the prize did not come. And don't get me wrong, Rodri is a bad player who deserves to be among the best. But Vini not getting that Ballon d'Or was embarrassing, and the only person who lost today was football. I remember Vini saying his dream was to see all of Brazil cheering for him. And that day was today! You are a giant and the best in the world, kido! And no trophy will change that. Move forward and never be quiet! We're all together!"

Wriddhiman Saha sidelined with hamstring tear, could be a doubt for Australia Tests

Wriddhiman Saha has torn a hamstring, forcing him to miss the Qualifier 2 of IPL 2020 for the Sunrisers Hyderabad against the Delhi Capitals in Abu Dhabi on Sunday. This is the second match in a row Saha has missed because of the injury, having sat out the Eliminator against the Royal Challengers Bangalore earlier.David Warner, the Sunrisers captain, confirmed the injury at the toss prior to the Sunday evening game. However, it remains unclear how bad the injury is, as the BCCI has not made any comment on it so far.The timing of the injury would be a concern for the Indian team management and the national selectors, because Saha has been named in the Indian Test squad for the four-match series in Australia, which is scheduled to begin on December 17 in Adelaide followed by fixtures in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Rishabh Pant is the other wicketkeeping option in the long-format squad.India have already had to leave out Rohit Sharma (hamstring injury) for the tour, even though he has continued to play for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL after a short layoff, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who has a thigh injury. But Ishant Sharma, who had to miss most of the IPL with a muscle tear, is expected to be fit for the Tests in Australia. An earlier BCCI media statement had said that both Rohit and Ishant would be “monitored”.Saha had stretched his groin while batting against the Capitals in an earlier game at IPL 2020, but then played against the Mumbai Indians in the Sunrisers’ final league game, where he played a lead role in a crucial win. He has had a good time with the bat on the few occasions he has played this season, scoring 30 in 31 balls from the middle order first up against the Kolkata Knight Riders but then blossoming when pushed to the top of the order as the team dropped Jonny Bairstow to accommodate Jason Holder. Saha’s scores after that were 87 in 45 balls against the Capitals, 39 in 32 against the Royal Challengers and 58* in 45 against the Mumbai Indians.Apart from Pant, the Test squad bound for Australia has KL Rahul, the chosen man behind the stumps in the shorter formats, in the set-up. Rahul is the only stumper in the ODI squad, while Sanju Samson is also in the mix in the T20I party.

South Africa vs England: Will ODI series still go ahead after Covid-19 outbreak?

Uncertainty reigns after Paarl cancellation with possibility England party could face 10 days in quarantine

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Dec-2020What is the current state of the tour?
Having completed the three-match T20I series with relatively little drama, issues surfaced ahead of the first ODI, scheduled for Friday in Cape Town. The game was initially postponed, after a positive Covid-19 test in the South Africa squad, and the Newlands fixture pushed back. However, two more positive tests among staff at the Vineyard Hotel, where both teams are staying, led to Sunday’s ODI in Paarl being delayed and then cancelled.Have there been any further positive tests?
The England camp subsequently revealed that they had returned two “unconfirmed” positives after a round of retesting on Saturday evening. These are awaiting independent ratification, after which the ECB will consult with CSA about the fate of the tour – although no decisions are expected until Monday.Could the remaining ODIs still be played?
In theory, yes. The rearranged fixture at Newlands has already been moved again, and won’t now be played on Monday. But should England’s two unconfirmed positives come back negative, then it is possible the ODIs could be played as back-to-back games on Tuesday and Wednesday. What happens if England’s two positive cases are confirmed?
The England players and staff are currently self-isolating in accordance with South African guidelines. Should the presence of Covid-19 be confirmed, those who tested positive would be required to remain quarantined at the hotel for a 10-day period, along with anyone deemed to have come into close contact with them. That would in turn mean missing the chartered flight that is due to take England home on Thursday.Would that have any knock-on effects?
Aside from unwanted stress and missing out on family time in the run-up to Christmas, some players might find deals to play in the Big Bash League at risk. Sam Billings, Tom Curran, Lewis Gregory, Liam Livingstone and Jason Roy are due to fly to Australia at the end of the series, but already face serving a 14-day quarantine period on arrival. With the BBL starting on Thursday and running through until early February, delays to their departure from South Africa could curtail availability for the tournament. For those players who are also likely to be in the England Test squad, there is also the looming prospect of a tour to Sri Lanka at the start of next year, scheduled to depart on January 2. If their return to the UK was put back until December 17, they would have little more than two weeks at home before being asked to travel to another bio-bubble for the two-Test series. How did individuals contract Covid-19 in a bio-secure environment?
This remains unclear. Although South Africa produced two positive tests ahead of the T20I series, those infections likely occurred before the squad came together. Thursday’s positive was “a more recent case that occurred within the bio-secure environment,” according to CSA medical officer, Dr Shuaib Manjra. CSA said subsequently it had investigated and discounted the possibility of a breach of protocol by the players. However, it is understood that not all of the hotel staff have been staying on site. What might be the implications for South Africa’s summer?
The whole tour was worth around US$4.2m in broadcasting money to CSA, and the loss of half of the fixtures would mean a significant financial hit. Equally damaging, confirmation of a bio-security breach could cast doubt on whether upcoming tours by Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Australia will go ahead as planned. Will there be any impact on the World Cup Super League?
If the series is cancelled due to the coronavirus, there is the potential for the three fixtures – worth 10 points each – to be rearranged (although few windows in which to squeeze another tour). In the case that the games go down as abandonments, then points would be shared, with South Africa and England taking 15 each.

Sunil Gavaskar: Wanted to be an attacking opener like Rohit Sharma

He also believes the current Test team under Virat Kohli is the best-ever India team

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Aug-2020

Sunil Gavaskar praised Rohit Sharma’s attacking style•BCCI

Sunil Gavaskar, the first man to 10,000 Test runs, was a batting template for an entire generation of Indian cricketers. He’s pleased that the next generation is raising the bar further. In an interview on ‘s E-Inspiration series, Gavaskar praised Rohit Sharma’s attacking style in particular, saying he would have loved to have been a free-flowing opener like Sharma.Since the start of 2015, Sharma has averaged 62.36 in 97 ODI innings and strikes at 95.44, with 24 centuries during that period. He is also currently the only batsman to have made multiple double-centuries – three – in ODI cricket, and is part of one of the most prolific ODI partnerships in history alongside Shikhar Dhawan. In the last home season, India transitioned him into a Test opening role as well, where he made a boisterous start with three centuries in five games.Gavaskar himself had a successful career as an ODI opener, finishing with an average of 35.13 in 108 matches. And while a strike rate of 62.26 was not automatically frowned upon during his playing time, he suggested that more belief in his own abilities might have made him score at a faster rate.”The way you see a Rohit Sharma opening the batting in one-day cricket, Test cricket smashing from the first over,” he said. “That is what I wanted to play. Circumstances and, of course, lack of confidence in my ability did not allow me to do that. But when I see the next generation doing it, I am absolutely over the moon, I love watching the next generation because there you see progress. You see how they are setting the bar higher for the next generation.”On a related note, Gavaskar said that the current Indian Test team under Virat Kohli is the best they’ve ever had. India are currently third in ICC’s Test rankings, one rating point behind New Zealand, and two behind Australia who are No. 1. They do, however, have a 64-point lead at the top of the World Test Championship standings as they brace for a Test series against Australia at the end of the year.Virat Kohli receives the ICC Test mace from Sunil Gavaskar•ICC

“I believe this team is the best ever Indian Test team in terms of balance, in terms of ability, in terms of skills, in terms of temperament. Can”t think of a better Indian Test team,” Gavaskar said. “This team has the attack to win on any surface. It doesn’t need any help [from] conditions. They can win on any surface. Batting-wise, there were teams in the 1980s that were pretty similar. But they didn’t have the bowlers that Virat has.”Much of India’s recent success in Tests, particularly the series win in Australia last year, has been credited to a potent and versatile bowling attack. The fast bowlers have near-identical numbers to the spinners under his captaincy, to the degree that no other Indian captain has ever had. The roster was part of the management’s plan to develop a bowling attack that would work anywhere in the world, and has made India a strong threat in overseas Tests. What’s left now, suggested Gavaskar, is a more rounded batting line-up.”[…] Without a question, India has got such a varied bowling attack today and that is so essential. There is a saying that if you don’t take 20 wickets, you won’t win a match. We have got the bowling to take 20 Australian wickets on one run less than what India has scored. You need to score runs also. We saw that in England in 2018. We saw that in South Africa in 2017 when we went there. (India lost both series)”We got 20 wickets every time but we didn’t score enough runs. But now I think we have also got the batting to be able to score more runs than Australians.”

Man Utd eyeing £86m star who’s an even bigger wonderkid than Mainoo

Now that the 2023/24 Premier League season is complete, Sir Jim Ratcliffe can finally undertake his first transfer window as Manchester United owner.

It’s clear that wholesale changes will occur at the club after an underwhelming season, with only a select few safe from being put up for sale.

However, as players depart, others must arrive, but this time around, it’s been reported that younger players will be prioritised over ready-made superstars.

With that in mind, there is a potential summer signing who could very well be an even bigger wonderkid than Kobbie Mainoo.

Man Utd eye up promising defender

According to a report from journalist Graeme Bailey, Man United are eyeing a move for the highly-rated Jorrel Hato.

Having scouted the defender for some time, he’s become a player that the Red Devils admire and could look to sign this summer.

However, they won’t be alone in their bid to sign Hato, with Arsenal also interested in acquiring his services and in pole position to do so.

In order to sign the Ajax ace, a report – via TEAMTalk – in March stated that the club will demand a huge £86m, which could be a stumbling block for both Premier League sides.

Why Hato could be a bigger talent than Mainoo

Mainoo’s rise to becoming a consistent first-team starter this season has been a joy to watch, arguably one of the best moments to have occurred over the campaign.

The 19-year-old midfielder has been absolutely immense over his 24 Premier League starts, showing the maturity and mentality of a seasoned professional.

Just six months ago, Mainoo was slowly announcing himself to the world, but after scoring three wonderful Premier League goals, there’s a genuine chance that he’s on the plane to Germany with England this summer.

Hato is also a player who’s followed an identical path to first-team glory as Mainoo, stepping up for a struggling side and performing at an extremely high level despite being just 18 years old – one year the United midfielder's junior.

As you can see by the table above, Hato is already performing at such a high level, which is completely remarkable considering his age.

The left-footed defender has started 33 matches in the Eredivisie this season – more than Mainoo – operating in three different roles: at centre-back, at left-centre back in a three, and as a left-back.

It’s clear from the statistics that Hato is a fantastic technician, boating incredible passing range and accuracy, which is why he’s been labelled as “magnificent” by football scout Jacek Kulig.

On top of that, he’s a dominant defender who’s not afraid to enter duels, taking on a proactive approach that would suit a team that opts for a high line, as shown by his tackles, interceptions, and balls recovered.

Furthermore, not only has the number four developed into a consistent key player for Ajax, but he’s taken on the responsibility of the captain’s armband this season, which highlights how much he’s valued as a talent. Not even Mainoo can manage that.

To be performing at an even higher standard than two of United’s key centre-halves this season just proves how incredible he truly is, and he could just be an even bigger prospect than Mainoo.

But one thing is crystal clear: Man United must do all they can to sign Hato this summer.

Cricket Australia chief stands by pay cuts, apologises to staff for poor communication

Questions from employees are believed to have been about the way the stand downs were handled

Daniel Brettig29-Apr-2020

Kevin Roberts speaks to presspersons in Melbourne•Getty Images

Kevin Roberts, the Cricket Australia chief executive, has given no indication the governing body will rethink its drastic cuts to the salaries of staff who have been stood down, even though he apologised to employees for the way the decision was communicated. As the CA chairman Earl Eddings and fellow director Paul Green prepared to present to their state association owners and players union partners on Thursday, Roberts addressed all staff via videoconference and stated his regret on behalf of his executives. Nevertheless, he appeared determined not to make any material changes to a model that saw some 200 staff stood down on 80% pay cuts while executives and the remainder of staff remained at work on 80% of their regular pay.ALSO READ: CA to open books to states, announce contractsMounting anger at the way that CA has handled the switch from a position of absorbing the Covid-19 pandemic shocks within the business and making deep cuts to staff pay, state association grants and revenue projections for the players under the governing body’s MoU with the Australian Cricketers’ Association has forced Roberts to address staff directly. Meanwhile, the sense of anger and distrust has compelled Eddings and the board to deal urgently with their owners and partners.Questions from staff to Roberts are believed to have referenced issues around the way the stand downs were handled, with staff given only a brief period to agree in writing to the move, while the chief executive is understood to have claimed that CA should have shared more information about its finances sooner.ALSO READ: Roberts ‘stumbled’ explaining CA’s financial battle – SpeedThese details, when shared with the states and the ACA, will be a matter of interpretation as much as they are numbers in black and white. Roberts had previously stated that CA, with average monthly revenue outflows of between A$30 million and A$40 million [US$19.5 to 26.1 million approx.] for the year, was looking at being down to A$40 million in cash by August, a level of reserves deemed insufficient given the uncertainties ahead due to the pandemic. However, it appears almost impossible that CA’s cash position can get any lower than A$40 million, given scheduled arrivals of ICC disbursements in July, sponsor fees in July and August, and instalments from broadcast rights deals with Fox Sports and Seven domestically in September and from Sony for international rights in October. Added to CA’s investments and the debt facility secured from banks, the governing body may be looking at having more than A$200 million [US$130.5 million] available at precisely the time Roberts warned it was in danger of going broke.ALSO READ: CA chief won’t back down on drastic staff cutsIt is that wide variation that has caused states to ask for as much financial detail as possible, with the underlying truth that ultimately the associations of New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Queensland, Western Australia and Tasmania would be required to prop up the central governing body in the unlikely event that it did become insolvent.Despite a longstanding drift towards the centralisation of decision-making, allied to a move to a financial model in which they received annual guaranteed grants in exchange for a loss of direct representation on the CA board, the states remain in possession of reserve powers over the composition of the board and – should they so wish – a revision of how it is constituted. As sporting governance experts Colin Carter and David Crawford stated in their 2011 review that led to the current board and financial models: “Under our recommended model, the States will control Board appointments and, if there is reason to do so, can at any stage dismiss the Board. That is the States’ protection. And we also find it difficult to imagine that the CA Board would fail to understand that adequately funding the State structures and teams and recognising existing stadium commitments is in the best interests of cricket. As the AFL Board seeks to protect the viability of its own shareholders, so we would expect that cricket’s leaders would do the same.”The simple solution is also the right one. The Board should be free to allocate cricket’s resources and there should be no pre-conditions other than ensuring that each State should be provided with an agreed level of funding that will enable them to fulfil their role.”
