Liverpool fans react as Adam Lallana to be offered new deal amid China and MLS interest

Many Liverpool fans have been reacting on social media after the Telegraph reported that Adam Lallana is to be offered a new deal at Anfield, having emerged as a target for clubs in China and Major League Soccer.

Lallana is out of contract on Merseyside next summer, but the Reds will sit down to discuss extending his spell beyond his current deal, which sees him pick up £110,000 per-week.

Jurgen Klopp is said to admire the 31-year-old for his leadership qualities and ability to play in a number of positions, having deployed the 34-cap England international as an attacking, central, defensive and wide midfielder throughout their time together.

Liverpool are ready to hold discussions with Lallana over extending his contract, but the former Southampton man would likely be offered longer terms and the promise of more regular football if he were to leave.

Clubs in China and MLS are thought to be interested in a potential deal, and may step up their advances when the transfer market reopens in January.

No sides are specifically mentioned in the Telegraph’s report, nor how much any interested party would need to offer to tempt Liverpool into selling.

Lallana is one of the Reds’ only natural attacking midfielders, while Klopp boasts five central and one out-and-out defensive option at Anfield in Fabinho.

With Fabinho one booking away from suspension, Lallana made his first Premier League start of the campaign in place of the Brazilian against Aston Villa at the weekend.

Lallana had made four outings in the top-flight before Saturday’s win, but no appearance was longer than the 19 minutes awarded against Manchester United when he scored the equalising goal.

Here are some of the reactions shared to the Telegraph’s report…

Newcastle United fans discuss Jamaal Lascelles after Mings’ England debut

A number of Newcastle United fans have been discussing Gareth Southgate’s view of Jamaal Lascelles after Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings became the 12th centre-back used by the England boss.

Mings made his Three Lions debut on Monday night alongside Manchester United’s Harry Maguire against Bulgaria, as Southgate opted to make a change at the back by removing Everton’s Michael Keane from the side that lost to the Czech Republic last week.

Southgate has previously trusted Phil Jones, Gary Cahill, Joe Gomez, Kyle Walker, Lewis Dunk, Phil Jagielka, John Stones, Chris Smalling and James Tarkowski as his central defensive options, and included Chelsea’s Fikayo Tomori in his England squad for the first time this international break.

A Newcastle fan calls for Sean and Matt Longstaff’s Mum to give birth to a starting eleven’s worth of Longstaffs in the video below…

Burnley’s Ben Gibson has also been named on the Three Lions bench thrice under Southgate, as has Fulham’s Alfie Mawson, although like Tomori, they did not enter the action to earn their senior debuts.

Newcastle’s Lascelles, meanwhile, is yet to earn a call-up to any England senior squad, with his last outing for the Three Lions coming in an U21 friendly against France in November 2014.

Since then, the Magpies captain has helped the St. James’ Park outfit return to the Premier League as Championship title holders and formed one of the best top-flight backlines in the Toon’s maiden campaign back in the highest tier of English domestic football.

United shipped 47 goals in the 2017/18 campaign, which only the top five of that season and seventh-placed Burnley could better. Newcastle conceded just one more in the 18/19 term, too, despite slipping from a tenth-placed finish to 13th in the Premier League standings.

Toon supporters are at a loss as to what more Lascelles needs to show in order to earn a maiden cap or a call-up by Southgate, with one calling the Derby-born defender’s continued absence “a complete joke”.

Others have suggested that Southgate has often chosen his teams on names over form and that it is “scandalous” that Lascelles continues to be overlooked.

Here are some of the messages shared…

Spurs fans hail Dele Alli after equaliser against Watford

Tottenham Hotspur fans have hailed Dele Alli after the midfielder rescued his side a point against Watford on Saturday.

The attacking midfielder scored in the 86th minute to salvage a draw for Mauricio Pochettino’s men in north London against the team that are currently rooted to the bottom of the league.

Indeed, Abdoulaye Doucoure’s goal gave Watford hope of claiming their first win of the season but Alli was able to net late on, as he pounced on a defensive mix-up to beat Ben Foster and tuck the ball home.

There was some controversy over the goal, however, with VAR checking to see if the 23-year-old had handled the ball in the build-up.

The technology eventually gave the goal and Spurs claimed what could be a valuable point as the season progresses.

And fans have taken to Twitter to hail the goalscorer, who was actually left out of Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the games against the Czech Republic and Bulgaria, having struggled for form throughout the campaign. Indeed, Saturday’s strike was his first of the season.

The candidates who could take Man United’s Director of Football position

[long_read]

It’s one of the most talked about roles at Manchester United: who will become the club’s inaugural director of football. The Red Devils have been in an utter mess since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson, stumbling around season to season with no obvious end goal in sight.

Mish-mash transfer policies and constant chopping and changing of managers certainly hasn’t helped matters, which is why suggestions last season that Ed Woodward was considering appointing a sporting or technical director seemed like a breath of fresh air.

Last week, however, United’s executive vice-chairman appeared to pour cold water over those hopes. In a conference call with club investors, the 47-year-old insisted the Red Devils’ current recruitment approach is the “right one”, and played down talk that an appointment for a new behind-the-scenes role could be made.

But, as matters appear to get worse on the pitch (look no further than the West Ham debacle), perhaps Woodward should seriously reconsider his position on the matter. United desperately need someone fresh to take hold of the reins on the transfer front, and there are a whole host of names across the footballing world who would quite conceivably do a better job than the current man at the helm.

And with that in mind, let’s check out just who could be in the frame to be the club’s first-ever director of football…

[snack_break title=”Rio Ferdinand”]

Let’s start with arguably one of the more popular choices on this list (well at least on social media).

A cornerstone of United’s all-conquering teams in the 2000s and early 2010s, Ferdinand undoubtedly says all the right things when it comes to his former club. The ex-England international is a no-nonsense straight-talker who isn’t afraid to speak his mind. As someone who appears finely in tune with the club’s ideals, appointing the 40-year-old would undoubtedly go some way to addressing the disconnect that currently lingers at Old Trafford.

[snack_break title=”Paul Mitchell”]

Mitchell the footballer was hardly a Ballon d’Or worthy talent. But his career post-retirement? Well, that’s another story. Having previously worked at Southampton and Tottenham in the Premier League, the 38-year-old has developed a burgeoning reputation for spotting lesser-known talent and seeing them thrive.

The likes of Sadio Mane, Dusan Tadic, Toby Alderweireld and Dele Alli were all Mitchell-approved signings. He may have been the perfect man for United due to his proven track record, but sadly for United, Sky Sports confirmed he would be taking on the role of Technical Director of Red Bull’s Global Soccer division earlier this month.

He’s one for the Red Devils to keep a track on even with his recent appointment mind.

[snack_break title=”Marcel Bout”]

Perhaps not the most recognisable name on this list, but Marcel Bout (pictured left) is certainly a key figure amongst United’s backroom staff already.

Brought in by Louis van Gaal, the Dutchman has now taken on the role of Head of Global Scouting. As someone with such a significant position at Old Trafford, he could well be an in-house solution to United’s search for a director of football. But, if The Daily Mirror’s report is anything to go by, then perhaps the club should think again. It claimed Bout predicted now Juventus star Matthijs de Ligt would follow in his father’s footsteps of becoming too fat, and so the club decided against a move. Oh dear.

[snack_break title=”Edwin van der Sar”]

Another man with historic links to the club, Van der Sar would represent another popular appointment in Manchester. Quite crucially, the Dutchman already has considerable backroom experience in his time as Ajax’s CEO. The former United number one was at the top of the tree as the Eredivisie giants returned to the pinnacle of European football with their run to the Champions League semi-final last season. Van der Sar has admitted himself he would be open to taking on a new challenge sooner rather than later. Could that be United?

[snack_break title=”Luis Campos”]

A man who was reported to be on United’s list of targets whilst Jose Mourinho was in charge (the pair had worked together at Real Madrid), Campos (pictured far right) is one of the most highly-rated individuals in his profession. In his time with French side AS Monaco, the Portuguese man oversaw the arrivals of  Joao Moutinho, James Rodriguez, Bernardo Silva, Benjamin Mendy and Tiemoue Bakayoko, amongst others. Not to mention negotiating the club-record £72m sale of Nicolas Pepe to Arsenal this summer from his current role at Lille. The perfect candidate for a rebuild job at Old Trafford?

[snack_break title=”Sir Alex Ferguson”]

Is it time for the messiah to come home and rescue the club? Sir Alex Ferguson has seen first-hand the kind of mess United currently find themselves in, watching on from the stands like the rest of the Old Trafford faithful.

Surely it must eat away at him seeing his dynasty die a slow and painful death? His management days may be over, but a role as director of football where he could perhaps have the final input on matters, and thus not fully have him come out of requirement may be what’s needed.

Ferguson doesn’t need United, but United certainly need him.

[snack_break title=”Eric Cantona”]

Cause you know, why not? ‘The King’ has become almost as big of a superstar off-the-pitch in recent years, as he was in his playing days at Old Trafford.

From his iconic “when the seagulls follow the trawler” in 1995, to his equally bizarre quoting of William Shakespeare’s King Lear this year, Cantona has made a habit of leaving us all scratching our heads.

United have been riddled with managers and players pulling in different directions, and so having the Frenchman’s wacky single-mindedness may just be a strange cure. If anything, the potential opportunity of having the 53-year-old kung-fu kick Ed Woodward in the boardroom may just be worth the price of handing him the director of football role.

Leeds’ Liam Cooper paints a negative picture despite victory

What a difference just three days make. Only at the weekend, Leeds fans were concerned with Marcelo Bielsa and the way their team was playing.

Yet, flash forward to Tuesday evening and they were defeating previously unbeaten West Brom.

It was an ideal way to bounce back from a loss against Charlton, hitting back to return to the top of the table.

The goal came courtesy of a driven effort from Gjanni Alioski as for once, Leeds were the team that perhaps didn’t deserve to win.

They had the least possession but still came out on top against an Albion team inspired under Slaven Bilic.

This was a different performance from the Whites. The frailties and lack of focus that was there against both Derby and Charlton were eradicated as a steely nature and attitude was shown at Elland Road.

There were plenty of positives to take from the win but it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows in west Yorkshire.

Jamie Shackleton had to go off injured but the biggest concern should lie with Liam Cooper.

The image above shows the Scot trudging off the pitch on Tuesday evening as he paints a picture of discomfort and negativity.

Cooper appeared to pull up with a muscle problem and was consequently replaced by Gaetano Berardi in the first half.

Leeds did go onto keep a clean sheet but it will be a big negative that one of their most influential team members and club captain faces up to six weeks out.

The Whites are already missing Adam Forshaw and Pablo Hernandez to injury so to lose two more of their squad is far from ideal.

After all, Leeds had used just 17 squad members this season before Tyler Roberts and Luke Ayling appeared on Tuesday – a league-low for the Championship. Bielsa will have to dig deep into his reserves to ensure results are still attainable.

Chelsea’s cup final loss proved that Ruben Loftus-Cheek can be Sarri’s missing jigsaw piece

Chelsea’s loss to Man City in the Caraba Cup final gave the Stamford Bridge faithful and Maurizio Sarri a lot to think about. The fixture highlighted that Chelsea are still a team that can defend well, that Maurizio Sarri perhaps isn’t as tactically inflexible as he’s made out, and, perhaps most important of all, it highlighted that the Blues had improved significantly since the last time City and Chelsea met.

Despite the loss, Chelsea can take a lot of lessons from the game, and perhaps the most obvious of these surrounds Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Chelsea have struggled for midfield creativity this season, with neither Ross Barkley or Mateo Kovacic able to impress at Stamford Bridge.

However, on Sunday, fans got perhaps their best sighting yet of Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Brought in during the closing stages of the game, he immediately settled in the Chelsea midfield – and it’s fair to say that he impressed throughout the final minutes of normal time and throughout extra time.

Perhaps most impressive was his dribbling. He achieved 4 successful dribbles against City – the second of any Chelsea player on the pitch – despite his limited minutes. Only Eden Hazard was ahead of him, and that goes some way to highlighting the impact that he’s able to have. He was direct and to the point, and that’s what Chelsea have recently been lacking. Barkley (who had just 2 successful dribbles) and Kovacic (who didn’t feature) always pass sideways or backwards, and they’re rarely eager to drive forwards. Loftus-Cheek’s presence gave Chelsea a new way to attack, and his influence was huge.

Stats only tell half the story, though. He’s quick on the ball, he’s technically gifted, and he’s a relentless runner. In truth, Loftus-Cheek offers exactly what Chelsea’s midfield needs, and he could be hugely useful over the course of the rest of the season.

He’s had fitness problems this season, but he looks to be past the worst of them. It’s time for Maurizio Sarri to trust him.

Man Utd’s striker woes could be solved with tactical switch for Daniel James

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Having sold Romelu Lukaku to Inter and Alexis Sanchez to the Nerazzurri on a season-long loan, it was painfully obvious Manchester United landed themselves in a bit of a pickle.

The Red Devils – who have historically boasted some of the greatest strike-forces in Premier League history – headed into the current campaign with just Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood as their sole options up front.

A 4-0 demolition job over Chelsea in the opening game of the season delivered a rosier tint on the club’s outlook. However, a series of stuttering results and injuries have since painted a rather bleaker picture. The only real silver lining for United so far? The incredible success story of summer signing Daniel James. And he could well turn out to be the answer to United’s big question too.

On the chalkboard

The Welsh wizard has been utilised from the left-hand side, and to good effect too. The former Swansea ace has cut on to his stronger right-foot and terrorised opposition defenders with his directness – on average this season, James has been fouled 2.3 times per game.

Against West Ham on Saturday, Rashford was forced off with a suspected groin injury mid-way through the second-half, and that prompted Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to bring on Jesse Lingard. Whilst the England international came on to play the centre-forward role, there was one highlight that should give the United boss some food for thought.

James found himself in the number nine position, and Lingard slipped a ball in behind the Hammers defence. The former showed an incredible turn of pace to try and latch on to it, but was denied by a sprawling Lukasz Fabianski. That phase of play hinted the winger could well be reinvented as a central striker over the coming weeks and months.

Added to his three goals already for the club, the 21-year-old averages 2.3 shots per game, and has shown that he has the willingness to always make runs in behind – look at his goal against Chelsea for instance. Make no mistake, United’s injury problems have highlighted the kind of crisis they have up front. A tactical switch for James could well be the answer for the short-term.

Rangers: Best XI post-January window

Rangers enjoyed a busy January transfer window as they brought in a number of players to bolster Gio van Bronckhorst’s squad at Ibrox.

Ross Wilson was hard at work as he secured deals to bring in James Sands, Amad Diallo, Aaron Ramsey and Mateusz Zukowski, with John Souttar also set to join at the end of the season.

The Gers are two points clear of Celtic at the top of the Premiership table and these additions could help them to land a second successive league title.

How could van Bronckhorst’s best XI now look? Here is our take on it…

The back four may remain exactly the same, with Zukowski the only addition to the head coach’s immediate options for the rest of the season.

James Tavenier has averaged an outstanding SofaScore rating of 7.81 for the Gers, with the skipper popping up with five goals and ten assists from right-back in the Premiership. This shows that there is no need for the Polish recruit to come straight into the XI and he could spend the next few months learning from the club captain and developing his game on the training pitch.

In midfield, Ramsey could replace Scott Arfield as one of the three, playing alongside Glen Kamara and Joe Aribo. The £16k-per-week Canadian gem has popped up with some important goals this season, scoring three goals in 15 Premiership outings this season.

However, the arrival of the former Arsenal man could force him to be resigned to a place on the bench for the rest of the campaign. Ramsey is a proven performer at the top level, having scored in the Premier League and Serie A for the Gunners and Juventus throughout his career, and could – therefore – bring an added level of quality to the side.

This could also leave January signing Sands on the bench, with Kamara starting in the dictating midfield role slightly behind Aribo and Ramsey. The Finland international has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.03, completing an impressive 91% of his attempted passes, whereas Sands has recorded a score of 6.95 and completed 87% of his pass attempts.

Whilst there may not be a great deal between them, statistically, Kamara has been at Rangers longer and could have van Bronckhorst’s trust for now. However, the USA international could work his way into the XI and keep his place if he continues to put in solid performances when called upon.

In the front three, Diallo could be the club’s best option on the right-wing. He had a dream debut as he scored in the 3-3 draw with Ross County, whilst also creating one chance and completing one dribble.

Rangers have struggled for goals in the right-wing position, with Scott Wright and Ianis Hagi managing just four between them. This is why Diallo could end up being a regular starter as his competitive bow for the club suggests that he could be the goal threat they have been lacking.

Aston Villa eye Stefan de Vrij move

Aston Villa are tracking Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij, who is also wanted by Tottenham, as per Football Insider.

The Lowdown: De Vrij profiled

De Vrij is represented by Mino Raiola, the same man who looks after another Villa target in Paul Pogba.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/aston-villa-latest-developments/” title=”Aston Villa latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Dutch centre-back turned 30 last month and has been with Inter since 2018, where he has made 155 appearances.

He has been labelled a ‘monster’ by former Lazio defender Mauricio and now seems to be wanted in the Premier League.

The Latest: Source shares De Vrij interest

Football Insider shared a story on Saturday afternoon regarding De Vrij. They were informed by a recruitment source that the defender is on Villa’s radar, with Steven Gerrard seeking the addition of an A-list centre-back in the summer.

De Vrij was valued at £40m in January but will be into the final 12 months of his Inter contract at the end of the season.

The Verdict: Revenge on Spurs?

Villa’s Premier League rivals Tottenham are also after De Vrij’s services this summer, with Antonio Conte keen on a reunion with the Inter Milan centre-back.

Spurs pipped Villa to the signing of midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur late in the January transfer window, so it looks as if the Midlands club could now get their revenge by beating the north Londoners to the chase for the Dutchman.

A new centre-back appears to be high on Gerrard’s wish list, so this could be a transfer link to keep a close eye on over the coming months.

Villa fans react to Hause exit rumours

West Ham are keen on signing Aston Villa defender Kortney Hause this month.

That’s according to reliable Hammers source ExWHUemployee, with the rumours receiving plenty of attention from a number of Villa supporters on social media.

Steven Gerrard has already lost one centre-back this month after Axel Tuanzebe cut short his season-long loan to join Napoli. That has left Tyrone Mings, Hause and Ezri Konsa as their only senior options in that position, with the latter of the three going off injured against Manchester United on Saturday.

According to ExWHUemployee, West Ham are looking at a move for the 26-year-old, who fits the wage structure at the London Stadium.

Described as a player with pace by journalist Pat Rowe, Hause has made eight appearances this season, with talks over a move to West Ham at a ‘primary stage’.

Villa fans react

The AVFC Faithful shared the links regarding Hause and West Ham on Twitter. Here is what these Villa fans had to say in reply, with the majority against the move due to the shortage of centre-back options at Villa Park.
