'Everyone is disappointed' – Ramdin

‘I did not stand up with the bat’ – Ramdin

West Indies captain Denesh Ramdin faced questions about his leadership after presiding over a second hefty defeat to Australia in as many matches, this time a 277-run mauling in three and a half days at Sabina Park.Ramdin top-scored for the hosts but it was the most measly of achievements, an innings of 29 serving only to ensure the West Indies managed to limp past three figures after at one point looking capable of emulating their dismissal for 51 by Australia at Trinidad in 1999.The abiding feeling was that the West Indies had slipped back into bad habits following the promise of a shared series against England, and plenty will wonder what effect Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s omission had on the dressing room, even if the 40-year-old’s supply of runs had dried up ahead of this encounter with Michael Clarke’s men. Certainly Ramdin looked wooden as a tactician, seldom reading the game in the optimal manner.”There’s a few bowling changes maybe when you look back at it, players who got starts and didn’t carry on,” Ramdin said. “Myself, not standing up with the bat as well, being able to contribute down the order. Some of our senior batters didn’t get off as we wanted to. Each series we look for a century from one of our top five and we didn’t get that. We need to go back to the drawing board.”They’re a good attack. They keep coming at us. We didn’t bat the amount of overs that we wanted to and they took all their chances. Everyone is disappointed. I think we didn’t bat as well as we wanted to, losing early wickets this morning. We had our plans to try to bat out the first hour and take into that afternoon session, bat out the day and return tomorrow, see how much we’d need. The Australians came at us all the time and they didn’t give us anything easy. That put us under some pressure.”Never was Ramdin’s captaincy more open to question than when he looked to have under-bowled a venomous Jerome Taylor on day one of the match at his home ground. Taylor took two wickets and did not conceded a run before lunch, but was restricted to a five-over new-ball spell before coming back to bowl a solitary over just before the interval.”When he bowled that long spell, when you look at our attack, you need to have him come back for a second spell,” Ramdin said. “That’s how it goes in cricket. Some guys need to step up. I don’t think Kemar Roach had the best of mornings that day. He came back on the second and third day. Other players just need to step up.”To some degree Ramdin was hamstrung by having only four bowlers at his disposal, whereas Australia’s consistent desire to play an allrounder provides them with far greater versatility. Jason Holder stepped up to top the West Indies batting averages this series, a sign he may well be ready to bat at No. 6.”The Caribbean gets very hot,” Ramdin said. “When you look at top teams they have an extra bowler in the top five in their batting lineup. That’s where we lack a fast bowler like a Watson or Ben Stokes or someone like that. Maybe if we can develop a player, our own player, like that, it’ll come in handy for us.”Jerome Taylor was bowling well for us in the last two series against England and Australia and there’s only so much one guy can do. I just hope the other guys can learn from that and step up.”

News on Smith lifts a bleak Manchester day

The only optimistic note on a grey day at Old Trafford was that Tom Smith’s back operation had been a success. Smith, appointed Lancashire captain in February, has led them in just one championship game

As the clans gathered at Cardiff and Yorkshire ran through Warwickshire quicker than stomach trouble on a campsite, one did not have to be a cricketing paranoid to think that the main action was taking place many miles away from Emirates Old Trafford this damp Monday. The only optimistic note of the grey afternoon was struck when it was reported that Tom Smith ‘s back operation had been a success. Smith was appointed Lancashire captain in February but has been able to lead his team in just one championship game this season.Yet the 25.4 overs that were possible on the first day of Lancashire’s Division Two match against Essex were important to players in both teams. By common agreement Lancashire produced their worst championship cricket of the season in last week’s grimy draw against Northamptonshire. Glamorgan, third, may trail by 50 points but they have a couple of games in hand and still have to play Lancashire twice. Ashley Giles will be on the lookout for the least speck of complacency among his players. And as Glamorgan fought their own battle against the weather in the urban pastoral of Queen’s Park, Chesterfield, they may have been heartened to hear of Lancashire’s struggle to a very moderate 96 for 4 against Essex on a day when James Porter added Paul Horton and Karl Brown to the 15 opening batsmen he had already sent packing this season.Porter bowls with a commendably high action and he is not scared to pitch the ball up. Those qualities may have led to him being milked for a few boundaries as the openers added 48 in 8.2 overs on the first morning but they also helped him achieve his successes. The first of these came when Horton pushed forward at a ball which moved enough off the seam to catch the outside edge and fly to the safe hands of Jesse Ryder at first slip; the second arrived just two balls later as Porter’s bounce surprised Karl Brown with the resulting nick being safely cupped by second slip Liam Dawson. If that catch helped Dawson feel that he belonged in the first game of his one-month loan from Hampshire, what happened over the next 15 overs may have turned him into an adopted son of Southend. Summoned into the attack by James Foster in the 16th over of Lancashire’s innings, the slow left-armer’s third ball had Alviro Petersen leg before for 14 when he played back to a delivery to which he might have gone forward.Having lunched on a moderate 92 for 3, the home side’s innings trespassed into outright mediocrity when Ashwell Prince tried to pull the first ball of the afternoon session to the boundary but only bottom-edged it onto his stumps. That gave Dawson his second wicket of a day which was soon to be cut short by the weather. A typically pugnacious clout over mid-on by the new batsman, Alex Davies, was the last scoring shot before a shower sent the players back to the pavilion just before two o’clock.

Franklin gives note to not write off Middlesex

The odds against Yorkshire retaining the title may be shortening every day but Middlesex ought not to be discounted as contenders just yet, even though Andrew Gale’s team clearly have some momentum.

The odds against Yorkshire retaining the title may be shortening every day but Middlesex ought not to be discounted as contenders just yet, even though Andrew Gale’s team clearly have some momentum. A win for Middlesex here would take them above Durham into second place, albeit having played a game more than the leaders.Yorkshire, moreover, would have a comfortable lead (assuming they go on to beat Warwickshire at Edgbaston). Yet if Middlesex can stay in touch there is the possibility that Yorkshire’s visit to Lord’s in the penultimate round in September could be a title decider. Yorkshire won by four wickets at Headingley in June but it was a close contest in which the champions needed another outstanding performance from Jonny Bairstow to give them the edge.Middlesex strengthened their first-day position by adding 62 runs before Nottinghamshire could claim the final three wickets. The eighth-wicket partnership that turned Sunday in Middlesex’s favour was broken in the eighth over of the morning by a Brett Hutton inswinger. Toby Roland-Jones fell to another swinging ball from Hutton to which he offered no shot but his runs and those of Tim Murtagh were valuable in helping Dawid Malan extended his career-best to 182 not out as Middlesex claimed a fourth batting point for only the second time this season.Nottinghamshire announced the highest membership numbers in the county’s 174-year history, revealing a 15 per cent increase to 8342 for 2015, during the afternoon. Those members need to show some forbearance at the moment, as their team struggles to recover from a poor couple of months in Championship cricket and Twenty20, which has clearly been a key driver in their popularity boom. The win over Worcestershire last week was a step in the right direction in their bid to avoid relegation in the Championship, which would clearly have negative consequences for membership next year. Yet the shortcomings that have undermined them in the last couple of months remain.Alex Hales, whose compelling start to the season brought him 639 runs from his first eight first-class innings, has only 90 from his last seven, the latest ending on 18 when he went to cut a ball from Harris but succeeded only in chopping it down on to his stumps. Michael Lumb, still feeling his way back after missing the first two months of the season following an arm operation, pushed tentatively at a ball from James Franklin and was caught behind.Franklin, the veteran former New Zealand left-armer, was the only Middlesex bowler who managed to make the ball swing to any noteworthy degree. It was the first over of his second spell, from the Pavilion End, that undermined Nottinghamshire’s progress towards a more substantial reply after Brendan Taylor and Steven Mullaney had added 71 for the third wicket. He bowled Taylor with an inswinger that the former Zimbabwean captain played all round and, two balls later, took a return catch in his follow-through as Riki Wessels tried to flick the ball away on the leg side.Taylor made 77, his second half-century in as many matches and his fifth all told in the Championship, three of which he has converted to hundreds. He has 742 runs for the season so far, which is a fair return given that his signing brought Nottinghamshire more criticism for importing another batsman at the expense of home grown talent, although with Jake Libby injured after his impressive introduction last season there were extenuating circumstances. Only Jonny Bairstow and James Hildreth have scored more Division One runs than Taylor.Speaking afterwards, Taylor said he felt he owed his team-mates some runs after putting down two chances in the slips on the first day. “I’ve been fairly consistent in the slips over the years but I’ve dropped a few too many this season,” he said. “It’s been a little different catching Duke balls to Kookaburra ones but they’ve been very catchable chances I’ve put down. There’s no excuses.”Samit Patel cannot cite unfamiliarity with the make of ball as an explanation for his two misses at point on Sunday, which between them cost 162 runs, nine to Harris and 153 to Malan. He had carefully cleared 12 of his personal deficit by the close, with Mullaney, who batted impressively under some pressure, unbeaten on 57, his second half-century of the season, although with 45 more needed to reach Nottinghamshire’s first target, of avoiding the follow-on, the two will need to work with equal diligence on the third morning.

A partida

'Family man, genius, and NZ's finest ever'

Ross Taylor and Martin Guptill recall their fondest memories of their mentor and pay tribute to the fallen New Zealand hero

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Mar-20163:44

‘Passionate, emotional, genius, inspirational’

Ross Taylor has said that a letter from Martin Crowe late last year inspired him and played a key role in his knock of 290 against Australia in Perth. Taylor spoke of a one-and-a-half-page note as he and Martin Guptill fondly remembered Crowe, their mentor, who died on Thursday after a prolonged battle against cancer.Crowe’s name has often found mention when Taylor and Guptill’s success has been spoken of. “It was the first time in my career that I actually doubted how long I’d be playing this game,” Taylor said. “He (Crowe) wrote a one-and-a-half page letter, one of the most amazing letters I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading, and it was about me and just a little reminder of why you play this game. I’m sure in time I’ll show people the e-mail, but it was pretty special and I must admit, I definitely wouldn’t have got 290 without this e-mail.”But in saying that, he sent a message after I bettered his record of 188 and said that that was the only record he was proud of and I took that off from him. But, he was still in good enough spirits to tell me that his highest Test score, 299, was better than mine. That put me back to earth very quickly. That e-mail may have only been a small thing, but it had a huge influence on the way I batted that day.”Taylor and Guptill shared very close relationships with Crowe, the extent of which was best reflected in the words Crowe chose for the two batsmen, just before World Cup final last year. “To see the two sons I never had, Ross Taylor and Marty Guptill, run out in black, in sync with their close comrades, will be mesmerically satisfying,” Crowe had written. “I will hold back tears all day long.”Guptill had not known Crowe for as long as Taylor did, but Crowe still had a massive influence on his career. “The last two years, it’s been valuable and I won’t forget my time with him,” Guptill said.”He’s very positive, he just wanted to push me to be the best I can be. I’ve got a lot of stuff we’ve worked on together, I’ve got it locked away in my head.”Taylor remembered how it was only on the insistence of Ian Smith that he first approached Crowe. “I was probably a little different to most Kiwi kids,” Taylor said. “My favourite players, growing up, were Sachin Tendulkar and Mark Waugh. I didn’t mind Hogan, I enjoyed watching him in the 1992 World Cup, but I didn’t really model my game on his. But I had just come into the New Zealand team, I was in limbo.”I knew Ian Smith very well, I went to school with his son Jarrod and we were good friends. I was just talking to Smithy one day and said I was enjoying playing cricket, but want to be better, and he said, ‘I think it’s about time you gave Martin Crowe a call.’ It was pretty nerve-wracking, ringing a New Zealand great, but he was pretty open and I flew up and stayed in his house in Auckland.”He’s just a genius. He was a pretty hard taskmaster. That’s what I needed in my career, for someone to kick me up the backside when needed. But at the same time, he understood when to pump your tyres up a little bit. I don’t think I’d be the player I’ve become without the guidance he gave me throughout and I owe a lot of my career to what he passed on to me.”Taylor was especially emotional while talking about the time he first learnt of Crowe’s illness, during New Zealand’s tour of England last year. “When I first found out, he was pretty open about the illness. He sent a message through a couple of days before the Test in Leeds and said, ‘I’m not well and if I do pass away, please do not come back for the funeral.’ His last wish was for me and Gup to bat together. So Kane [Williamson] knicked off and I went out to bat, glove-punched Gup and we both said at the same time, ‘this is for Hogan.’ I’m sure he’ll be looking down and telling me to play straight.”Guptill was packing his bags to leave for Dubai for New Zealand’s preparatory camp ahead of the World T20 when he received news of Crowe’s death. “I was with my wife Laura and she got a notification from New Zealand Herald, saying he had passed away and, straightaway, I just felt very numb. We knew it was coming but didn’t know when. And when it eventually did, it still came as a bit of a shock and one that will take some time to get over.”Ross has known Martin longer than I have. We were both quite emotional getting on that plane. We shared a glass of wine together in memory of Hogan, so that was a nice thing to do while we were in the air.”Calling him a family man, Guptill fondly recalled the time he spent with Crowe outside of cricket, particularly the night before his wedding as well as the day when Crowe, along with his entire family, went to watch the NRL grand final of 2014 with Guptill’s family.Guptill summed up Crowe as one of New Zealand’s finest ever. “When I was a lot younger, in the lounge, watching the Test matches at Eden Park, I used to pad up and pretend to be while Martin was batting on TV, so that’s one thing I’ll take away from his early career. I don’t remember too much of him playing, to be honest. All I remember is him being a seriously good player and probably our finest ever.”Taylor recounted Crowe’s first impression of him as a “dirty slogger” and summed up Crowe as a passionate man who loved and wanted to give back to the game. “I had only just started playing first-class cricket and Leanne (Taylor’s manager) rang him up and said, ‘I’ve got a new player, Ross Taylor, can you go and have a look at him?’ I think I batted at 5 then for CD (Central Districts) and I saw Martin walking around the boundary, like a selector at an age-group tournament. I think I got about 40 off 25 balls on the first morning of a first-class game and Hogan said to Leanne, ‘he’s nothing but a dirty slogger.’ But things have come a long way. Hopefully, I’ve improved from that slogger back at Eden Park No. 2.”He was passionate, emotional, and a genius. He had a kind heart and I think he just wanted to be included and give back to the game of cricket that had been so good to him. He saw what I wanted to do and I just hope I was able to give him a little bit of personal satisfaction out of my career because he did give me a lot.”

To concede 593 for 9 against a county with designs on a third successive Championship, be riven by an injury crisis which saw their coach and analyst pressed into fielding duties on the final day and yet still emerge with a draw was a commendable effort by Hampshire as they braced themselves for the hospital waiting rooms that lie ahead.Fidel Edwards, Hampshire’s talisman as they escaped relegation on the final day last season, was the latest casualty after badly damaging an ankle in the pre-match warm-up and being carried from the outfield. It remained unclear whether the ankle was broken – he remained in Leeds after the match for further tests – but Hampshire are provisionally estimating a lay-off of two months, which equates to half the Championship season.A fortnight into the season, roughly half the Hampshire professional staff has been injured, included six frontline bowlers, a calamitous situation which makes draws against Warwickshire and Yorkshire, two sides with Championship pretensions, quite something.Loan signings are inevitable to see them through the coming weeks, although no Division One side is likely to be overly generous and the quality of any Division Two signing would be dubious. Any agent for Kolpak or dual national signings is likely to receive a call.Considering that Hampshire were also hampered by injuries in this match to Sean Ervine, who will discover back in Southampton whether he has rebroken the finger that disrupted his 2015 season; Liam Dawson, who has an abdominal strain; and Chris Wood, whose knee niggle did relent enough for him to bowl in the second innings, Yorkshire still had an opportunity for victory when Hampshire’s innings ended, 140 behind, half an hour in the final day.But their second innings faltered against excellent Hampshire bowling. From 43 for 4 in the 18th over, when the prodigious run scoring of Jonny Bairstow for once failed to deliver (Ryan McLaren producing a good one to have him caught at the wicket), it became evident that they had abandoned hope of working themselves into a position to declare. Bairstow has averaged close to 100 in the Championship since the start of last season, but he can expect a regular England Test place this summer and Yorkshire need to cover his runs from other sources.”It’s not panic stations – it the first game of the season,” said their captain Andrew Gale. “We were a bit sloppy and a bit soft. We have flagged it up and it won’t happen again. But there’s going to come a time in the season when you can’t rely on your Jonny Bairstows to keep standing up and making unbelievable contributions. The lad is playing a different game to the rest of us I think.”The alibi for Yorkshire’s caution was that this Headingley surface remained too true for any undue risk to be taken.”A lot of credit to Hampshire who didn’t lie down and die,” Gale said. “I felt it was a good decision of theirs to bowl first on a pitch which flattened out a bit. I didn’t think that there was enough time to set a game up after we had lost a few wickets and we had to concentrate on a solid draw.”That flattening-pitch alibi looked just a little threadbare in the hour before tea, however, as Will Smith’s offspin found enough turn to suggest that it would have been more advantageous for Adil Rashid to be bowling in the final session instead of batting out the overs. It might have benefited Rashid, too – a rare chance to bowl in encouraging conditions at Headingley in April being not exactly a common one. Considering that 21 overs were lost to bad light on the opening day, and unbroken sunshine came to the batsmen’s aid, this surface does not deserve to be talked down.”The wickets we took early probably halted their progress, but with 40 overs to go I thought they might have a crack at us,” said Hampshire’s captain James Vince. “After 150 overs in the field maybe thought it wasn’t worth taking the energy out of their bowlers on a flat wicket.”There are concerns in Yorkshire’s top order, tempered naturally by the fact the season is one game old, including two failures for Alex Lees, the latest when he was lbw during a demanding new-ball spell from James Tomlinson. Lees, as a young one-day captain carrying much responsibility, will hope to reverse last season’s slip in form before life becomes too demanding. As for Tomlinson, he had wondered if his Championship opportunities might be limited after the signing of another left-arm quick, Reece Topley – another early-season casualty – but he was impressive here.It took 12 overs for Yorkshire to find the boundary and even they, two in succession, were leg byes. The most tortuous innings was played by Gary Ballance who took 28 balls to get off the mark and who needed 36 balls for 4, at which point he thrashed Chris Wood to a carefully-stationed short cover. Adam Lyth wafted a wide one to slip. Jack Leaning was beaten in the flight by Smith. Gale’s measured 46 guarded against disaster.Hampshire’s 12th man Mason Crane, coach Dale Benkenstein and analyst Joe Maiden had to field for much of the final day, presumably leaving Hampshire short of data as well as bowlers – just the sort of thing to send shivers through a modern dressing room. But who needs data when they can just wallow in memories of a draw as battling as this, one which leaves them with one defeat in eight since they began the recovery last season that ultimately saw them escape relegation.
