Jadhav, Tripathi hurt Punjab

Kedar Jadhav’s first century of the season and his unbroken 148-run partnership with Rahul Tripathi all but ensured Maharashtra would deprive Punjab of an outright win

Kedar Jadhav’s first century of the season and his unbroken 148-run partnership with Rahul Tripathi all but ensured Maharashtra would deprive Punjab of an outright win and earn a point from their Ranji Trophy Group B encounter at the Maharashtra Cricket Association stadiumAt the end of the penultimate day, Maharashtra were 259 for 3 in their second innings, with a lead of 78. But with the new ball due in seven overs, the hosts will need to be sensible against the Punjab seamers in the first hour tomorrow.Although Jadhav and Tripathi batted well, Punjab let the game drift and lost an opportunity to claim six points. At 370 for 8, they had a lead of 160 runs and should have either attacked or declared to make best use of a pitch that aided seam bowling under early morning conditions. Maharashtra’s top order had already faltered once on the first morning.Instead, Gitansh Khera and Sandeep Sharma played sedately. Khera had even declined singles off the first couple of balls of the over and as a result, the last two wickets added just 21 runs in 10 overs. The innings, however, ended on an unfortunate note as last-man Maninder Singh was caught behind off Samad Fallah’s seventh ball with umpire Amardeep Pathania forgetting to call the over.Despite wasting the first hour, Punjab’s new-ball pair came hard at the Maharashtra batsmen. Siddharth Kaul had Chirag Khurana caught at deep fine leg and Sandeep induced an edge from Vijay Zol to the wicketkeeper Khera to leave the score at 23 for 2.Ankit Bawne, promoted to No. 4, steadied the ship along with in-form opener Harshad Khadiwale. In the last over of the session though, Bawne was hit on the helmet while trying to duck under a short ball from Maninder. The blow forced an early lunch and the Bawne did not return when play resumed.Jadhav came out with Khadiwale and Maharashtra enjoyed a spree of boundaries in the half hour after lunch. Khadiwale, for a change, was the more aggressive of the two and his back-to-back upper cuts off Maninder were a treat. But soon after he completed his second fifty of the season, Khadiwale was bowled by Maninder. At 111 for 3, Maharashtra were 70 runs away from making Punjab bat again. Tripathi joined Jadhav and their association reached 59 at tea and the deficit was almost wiped out.Bawne waited with his pads on throughout the last session, but Jadhav and Tripathi ensured he got more than enough rest. Jadhav eased past his half-century and began toying with the Punjab bowling. He charged at Harbhajan Singh and collected a six over long-off and was able to rotate strike at will against the seamers.Tripathi also displayed his prowess with two powerful drives – one through cover and the other down the ground – off medium pacer Amitoze Singh. Punjab were missing Yuvraj Singh’s left-arm spin at this stage. The allrounder was resting at the hotel after playing through fever on the second day. So Harbhajan turned to Gurkeerat Singh’s part-time offspin to restrict the scoring. The only time the fourth-wicket partnership was in danger was when Tripathi survived a close shout for a stumping off Amitoze in the last hour of play. Khera had walked in a couple of steps before the ball was delivered and had quickly clipped the stumps when Tripathi offered no shot. The decision was referred to the third umpire, but the benefit of doubt went in favour of the batsman.Jadhav, meanwhile, cruised to his 11th first-class hundred off 129 balls. In the next over, Tripathi also raised his second fifty of the match.

Mentiroso gordo safado – escreveu o jogador do Colo-Colo.

Scorchers hand Strikers their first loss

Two wickets apiece from left-arm spinners Brad Hogg and Ashton Agar stifled the Adelaide Strikers and handed them their first loss of the tournament by defending 133 at the Adelaide Oval to give the Perth Scorchers an 18-run win

Two wickets apiece from left-arm spinners Brad Hogg (2-11) and Ashton Agar (2-24) stifled the Adelaide Strikers, who suffered their first loss of this season as the Perth Scorchers defended a total of 133 to win by 18 runs. The Scorchers’ win was set up first by an unbeaten fifty from Adam Voges, and later by four bowlers who took two wickets each to move them to second in the points table. The Scorchers’ top three batsmen didn’t get great starts after they were put in to bat, scoring a total of 41 runs before Voges, at No. 4, led the charge. After Adam Zampa disturbed the top order, Shaun Tait and Ben Laughlin knocked the stumps to reduce the Scorchers to 5 for 75 in the 13th over. However, Voges resisted and counterattacked, and combined with Ashton Turner and Yasir Arafat to charge them to 6 for 133, striking six fours in his 36-ball 54.The Strikers started with a strong opening stand of 38 in 5.2 overs, before the openers fell within 10 runs. They lost their third wicket without much progress and were 3 for 65 in the 11th over, and never recovered from there. Hogg struck in his third over with the wicket of Travis Head, and from thereon the chinaman bowler and Arafat ran through the middle and lower order, aided by a run-out.Hogg came back to have Ryan ten Doeschate caught at long-off in his next over for 4 and Agar bowled Johan Botha with a quicker delivery to leave them reeling at 92 for 7. The win was sealed after Arafat dismissed Zampa and Kane Richardson in successive overs as the Strikers lost their last six wickets for 41 runs. Andrew Tye was the fourth bowler to pick two wickets. The loss does not affect the Strikers’ position in the table as they still sit at the top and have a two-point lead over the Scorchers and Sydney Sixers.

Praveen, Badrinath benefit from lower base price

Players who went unsold because of a high base price in the 2014 auction benefitted from lower base prices and attracted bids in the 2015 auction

Arun Venugopal and Amol Karhadkar16-Feb-2015

Praveen Kumar: “I don’t understand the concept of base price … It’s my brother who takes care of such matters”•BCCI

Medium-pacer Praveen Kumar had opted for a base price of INR 2 crore [approximately $333,000] in the player auction in 2014. He remained unsold. In 2015, he lowered his base price to INR 50 lakh [approximately $83333] and fetched a final price of INR 2.2 crore [approximately $367000], after more than two teams bid competitively for him.Praveen’s sale is an example of how the base price was an important factor in determining who got bought this year, despite going unsold in 2014. He was lucky in 2014, when Mumbai Indians signed him as a replacement because Zaheer Khan got injured. But others like him, who set a higher base price, had to miss out on the whole IPL season.Praveen told ESPNcricinfo the decision to lower his base price wasn’t his. “I don’t understand the concept of base price. Neither did I fix the price last year nor did I do so this year. It’s my brother who takes care of such matters.”Praveen wasn’t alone in going unsold in 2014. Batsman S Badrinath, who also didn’t get a bid last year with a base price of INR 1 crore, also benefitted from a reduced price this time. He was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore at base price for INR 30 lakh.”Auction is honestly not under my control. It is dictated by so many factors,” Badrinath said. “For me, the important thing was to play in the IPL, and play well. That was my top priority. That’s why I went for this base price.”Even left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha, who had a base price of INR 2 crore last year, and was subsequently bought by Mumbai Indians for INR 3.25 crore, made a significant cut this year. Ojha, who had his action cleared by the BCCI only days before the auction, was bought again by Mumbai Indians for his base price of INR 50 lakh. The franchises said players have become smarter. “The auction dynamics are such that when you lower the base price you have a better chance of teams getting involved,” Venky Mysore, Kolkata Knight Riders’ managing director and chief executive, said. “They have realised that many of them would fetch more with a lower base price than having a higher base price.”Several England cricketers have failed to attract bids over the years because of their high base price. This year, they were joined by some of their Australian and West Indies counterparts.”The best example is Marlon Samuels and Cameron White. They put 1.5 crore [as their reserve price]. Had they put 50 lakh, may be they would have ended up with 1.5 crore,” said TA Sekhar, director of Delhi Daredevils. “If a franchise has a budget of 1 crore for a player, it can extend it by about 50 lakh. Beyond that it will not go. Last year, David Hussey asked me, I told him to put Rs 50 lakh. This year also, he somehow put 1 crore and didn’t get a bid.”Irfan Pathan also suffered because of a high base price. He remained unsold in the first round and got a solitary bid for his base price of INR 1.5 crore [approximately $250,000] when the franchises could recall some of the unsold players. The exception among those with a higher base price was medium-pacer Zaheer Khan. He is recovering after breaking down in the 2014 IPL but was bought by Daredevils for INR 4 crore [approximately $667,000] – four times his reserve price. Daredevils didn’t let him go even when Mumbai Indians big competitively to buy Zaheer back.”In case of Zaheer Khan, it was purposely that both us and Mumbai Indians waited for the second round. They also thought that maybe they would get him cheaper but we had to have him on board and went all the way for him, so the players should realise lowering the base price always works better.”

Southee, Boult NZ's best ever new-ball pair – Hadlee

Tim Southee and Trent Boult have earned the highest possible praise from the highest possible source in New Zealand cricket, with Richard Hadlee declaring them the country’s finest ever new-ball combination

Brydon Coverdale in Auckland25-Feb-2015

Tim Southee and Trent Boult have earned the highest possible praise from the highest possible source in New Zealand cricket, with Richard Hadlee declaring them the country’s finest ever new-ball combination. Hadlee also said the current outfit led by the “inspirational” Brendon McCullum was the best group New Zealand had ever put together for a World Cup campaign.Hadlee should know; not only is he the best cricketer New Zealand has ever produced, he played in three World Cups himself – including a semi-final in 1983 – and watches the bowlers with the most expert of expert eyes. Only three New Zealanders have taken a five-for in a World Cup game: Hadlee in 1983, Shane Bond in 2003 and Southee last week, when he claimed 7 for 33 against England.”I think particularly with Southee and Boult, it’s our best ever new-ball combination in our history,” Hadlee said. “The way those two bowlers complement each other, with the left and right arm and their various swing skills, they’re wicket-taking bowlers. They’ve proved that successfully, particularly over the last 12 months.”It’s fair to say that they’ve come of age. They’re at the top of their game at the moment. And they’re young, they’re going to be around a long time. That’s good for New Zealand, because you’ve got to bowl sides out in all forms of the game, and that’s what they’re doing.”The attack has been key to New Zealand’s outstanding start to the World Cup campaign, with three wins from their first three games, but their biggest clash so far will come this Saturday, when they take on Australia at Eden Park. Hadlee was speaking at a public event in Auckland, where the reception given to the New Zealand players showed how popular they are in their country.”Australia came out here in ’82, we had 44,000 at Eden Park,” Hadlee said. “I think it will still be the biggest ever crowd in the history of New Zealand cricket. We might near match that on Saturday. We’re starting to replicate what went on many, many years ago.”What they’re doing now, the way they’re playing, the fact the country has got in behind them … They’ve had three very good wins. They’re in a very good position on the table at the moment. Another win or a rained out game and you get to seven points and you’re in a quarter-final. I think these lads are probably the best ever one-day side that we’ve put together in a World Cup competition.””I think these lads are probably the best ever one-day side that we’ve put together in a World Cup competition”•Getty Images

However, much has been made of the fact that New Zealand have reached six World Cup semi-finals but are yet to win one, and they know that the knockout phase of the tournament is where the real business takes place. That is where New Zealand will need McCullum to really come to the fore, as both a leader and a calming influence on the group.”The way that he’s captained the side has been inspirational,” Hadlee said. “The way that he fields and leads the side in the field, he puts his body on the line, and his batting ability as well, if he can put all three things together, the other players will follow that.”There’s probably four or five match-winners in our side, either with the ball or the bat or being an allrounder. This is probably one of the best balanced sides that we have had. The selectors have got an interesting problem in picking the XI out of the 15, because they’re all good enough to play.”Strangely, given the proximity of the two nations, this will be only the third time in New Zealand’s last 96 ODIs that they have faced Australia, the last two meetings having also come in ICC events. A bilateral series has not been held since 2009-10, which has prompted the boards of the two countries to put the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy up for grabs in Auckland this weekend.”I’d like to think we should be playing a lot more, particularly contesting in 50-over cricket or even T20 cricket, the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy,” Hadlee said. “I think it’s a nice thing to have and for the players to play for … There’s a lot of rivalry between the two countries. At the end of the day we do love each other. We do have close relations with the economy and those sorts of things, but on the sporting field it’s a bit different.”Despite his effusive praise of the current New Zealand side, Hadlee was quick to respond when asked which team would go in to this Saturday’s match as favourites.”Australia,” he said. “I’m not putting pressure on our boys at all.”That horse might already have bolted.
