Newcastle must unleash Michael Ndiweni

Newcastle have struggled throughout this season in the Premier League and are currently 17th in the table as it stands.

The Magpies are one point ahead of 18th-placed Norwich and have the second-worst defensive record in the division, with 44 goals conceded in 22 games.

However, they have also struggled to find consistent goalscorers. They have netted 24 goals in 22 games and are now set to be without their top scorer Callum Wilson for the majority of the campaign.

The ex-Bournemouth forward has been tipped to return for the last few matches of the season and has scored six Premier League goals this term, with 18 since the start of the 2020/21 campaign. This shows how important he has been to the team and why his absence is a major blow for Howe’s squad heading into the next few months.

Forget Wilson

It is time to forget about Wilson for now though, as he will not be back for a little while yet, and start focusing on potential solutions at the top end of the pitch. How can Newcastle replace his goals?

January signing Chris Wood has scored three league goals in 20 appearances for Burnley and the Magpies combined this season and does not appear to offer the same goalscoring threat as his teammate. This means that it could be the right time to dip into the academy structure to find a new first-team hero.

One young player who has been making waves at youth level is teenage centre-forward Michael Ndiweni. The Chronicle recently reported that he has been called up to training with the senior squad after impressing Howe, which suggests that he could have the potential to make the step up.

In the academy this season, Ndiweni has scored an outstanding 12 goals in 13 matches. This means that he has found the back of the net every 1.08 matches this term, including eight goals in 10 Under-18 Premier League games. He even managed to score in his one EFL Trophy outing, despite being on the pitch for just 17 minutes, which further highlights his goalscoring instincts.

Whilst there is no guarantee that the 18-year-old will be able to translate this form into senior level, it does show that he is a young player with potential who knows how to score goals. With Newcastle currently lacking in that department, the timing could be right for Howe to unleash him in the Premier League to solve his Callum Wilson problem in the coming weeks and months.

The teenage dynamo could be hungry to grasp a first-team debut with both hands, and his hunger to impress could be a useful quality to have in a relegation fight as every player needs to give 100% to the cause to pick up points. Howe must now make the call and give Ndiweni an opportunity, whether that comes off the bench or from the start, as he can be the solution to the Magpies’ attacking woes.

Spinners cement Yorkshire's advantage

Yorkshire have not won a Roses match, remarkably, since 2002 but are in a strong position to correct that shortcoming after dominating the first and last sessions on day two

Jon Culley at Old Trafford29-Jun-2010
ScorecardYorkshire have not won a Roses match, remarkably, since 2002 but are in a strong position to correct that shortcoming after dominating the first and last sessions on day two here, where Adil Rashid offered further evidence that his self-confidence is beginning to flow back after a difficult few months.Rashid has always been a bowler in need of regular reassurance and the dismal way in which he was handled by England during the winter has been seen – not only by his own county – as damaging to his morale. Being dropped from the tour to Bangladesh and overlooked for the World Twenty20 seemed to a good few independent judges to be precisely what the young legspinner did not need, particularly after largely being left to carry the drinks with England in South Africa.A winning contribution to a Roses match would only be good for his self-esteem, and after he and the teenage offspinner Azeem Rafiq shared six wickets between them – five in the final session – there was reason to believe that Yorkshire’s eight-year wait for a victory over the old enemy might be about to end, although a bad weather forecast for Thursday is less encouraging.Rashid’s form has been returning in the last month, particularly in the shortest form of the game. In the Friends Provident t20, he is the country’s leading wicket-taker with 20 wickets so far, five more than his nearest pursuer among the slower bowlers, and the skill and intelligence with which he bowled here blunted Lancashire’s hopes of mounting a substantial reply to Yorkshire’s 447.They were 94 without loss and 101 for 1 at tea but were comprehensively hauled back in the last session.Until then, against Yorkshire’s seam attack – lacking Ajmal Shahzad and Tim Bresnan but disappointingly wayward nonetheless – openers Paul Horton and Stephen Moore had looked comfortable, putting together Lancashire’s best opening stand of the season by some distance. But, bowling unchanged for 19 overs at the Statham End in his first spell, Rashid stifled their progress by conceding only 38 runs and, for good measure, claimed the first three wickets, increasing his haul in first-class Roses matches to 31 in eight games. He has taken five in an innings on three occasions. Each of his successes this time demonstrated a different skill, from the caught-and-bowled chance he snapped up when Moore parried back at him from high on the bat, through Horton’s leg-before dismissal to a ball that went straight on, to the turn and bounce that accounted for Mark Chilton, via an edge to slip. The spell altered the complexion of the contest after Lancashire had given themselves some hope that closing on Yorkshire’s 447 – a total allowed to swell rather negligently by Lancashire in the morning – might not be beyond them.Horton, who averages 73.37 in Roses matches, had taken the score to 101 for 1 with a boundary just before tea and completed his fifth half-century in seven matches against Yorkshire just afterwards. But his departure for 63 at 131 for 2 was followed swiftly by Chilton at 143 and when Azeem Rafiq, the 19-year-old offspinner, took revenge for a big six struck by Steven Croft by having the allrounder caught at slip next ball, Lancashire were beginning to wobble. That wobble turned into a bit of a crisis, however. With half a dozen overs left in the day, what they needed most was to reach the close without further damage, especially after allowing Yorkshire to add 68 more runs in the morning before they could take the last two wickets, missing out on a bowling bonus point too.Instead, Simon Katich, on his Championship debut against a county he represented four times in 2002, was snapped up bat and pad by Adam Lyth off Rafiq, who secured his third wicket by bowling nightwatchman Simon Kerrigan between bat and pad for a duck. Lancashire are still 111 short of avoiding the follow-on.

Newcastle: Ryder’s Lingard update

Newcastle United ‘aren’t giving up’ hope of signing Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard, The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder writes, revealing Eddie Howe is a huge admirer.

The lowdown

Newcastle’s efforts to sign Lingard during the January transfer window continued until Deadline Day.

They offered to pay a fee to take him on loan in addition to covering the entirety of the player’s £75,000-per-week salary.

But Manchester United’s board blocked the move, even after interim manager Ralf Rangnick had given Lingard permission to leave, and that left the player ‘extremely disappointed’.

But The Red Devils may be powerless to stop him leaving at the end of the season, when his contract is due to expire.

The latest

Ryder sets out ‘Howe’s stance’ on Twitter and in his article for The Chronicle, as the manager said: “Jesse Lingard is a player I have always admired.”

He says Howe has indicated that Newcastle ‘will be in the hunt’ once again come the summer.

If the Magpies survive and Lingard decides to run down his contract, ‘he could be an intriguing free transfer’.

The verdict

Lingard on a free would be a superb bit of business. He showed on loan at West Ham last season, where he scored nine goals and provided five assists in 16 appearances, that he can be explosive in the right environment. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer even called him ‘brilliant’ after that temporary stint.

What’s more, in Transfermarkt’s estimation, he’s an £18million player, so to get him for nothing would be an incredible coup.

The problem for Newcastle, of course, is that they may not be the only club in the running.

Indeed, as recently as last Sunday, sports journalist Pete O’Rourke told Give Me Sport that the Hammers would ‘definitely’ be in the mix for the signing.

If, as you’d expect, Lingard looks back fondly on his time in London, they may have a key advantage.

Spurs will forever regret Madueke exit

Tottenham Hotspur will surely be reeling from their decision to let Noni Madueke leave for nothing in 2018.

No one could’ve predicted his rise but the 19-year-old sensation has now emerged as one of Europe’s brightest prospects outside of the five major leagues.

The electrifying winger made his debut for the Lilywhites’ U18 squad aged just 15, highlighting just how far ahead of his peers he was, but Spurs were never able to keep hold of him.

Following in the footsteps of Jadon Sancho, the young Englishman opted to swap England for the Netherlands, rejecting Manchester United to join 24-time champions PSV Eindhoven in a free transfer.

One that got away?

After a breakthrough campaign in 2020/21, where he scored nine times and laid on eight assists, Madueke is enjoying another exemplary season for the Dutch giants.

A muscle injury has curtailed his progress somewhat but that hasn’t stopped him from making his mark whenever he has featured – as per Transfermarkt, the former Tottenham gem has delivered ten direct contributions across 20 appearances, managing a goal or assist once every 112.9 minutes.

It’s 27 goals and assists from only 56 senior appearances, which is remarkable, even for the Dutch top-flight.

“He’s fast and has the capability to trick his opponent. He brings creativity and is very explosive in his actions. That’s what PSV needs,” once claimed former PSV midfielder Tommie van de Leegte.

Whilst it is the influence of former Red Devils forward Ruud van Nistelrooy that has seemingly taken Madueke’s game to the next level.

‘PSV academy coach Van Nistelrooy was behind Madueke’s conversion from a No.10, believing his one v one dribbling ability and speed would make him better suited to a wide role,’ revealed the Daily Mail last year.

As a result of his impressive performances for the Dutch outfit, the teenager has seen his value soar. When he arrived at the Philips Stadion, he was worth only £540k but the England U21 international is now valued at a whopping £16.2m by Transfermarkt – a whopping 2,233% increase.

That’ll have chairman Daniel Levy fuming, at least, as he’s either missed out on a future star or the prospect of cashing in for hefty profit in the future. Either way, he made a massive mistake in letting the young talent leave so soon.

Cricket Australia in no rush on Howard decision

Cricket Australia will not finalise its next candidate for the ICC vice-presidency until August

Cricket Australia will not finalise its next candidate for the ICC vice-presidency until August after its board decided only to review the events that led to John Howard’s rejection last week. Australia and New Zealand must make another joint nomination for the role, which includes two years as the global organisation’s president from 2012, and there will not be a swift conclusion to this complicated episode.Jack Clarke, Cricket Australia’s chairman, led the teleconference from London on Friday and briefed his board on the way Howard’s appointment was blocked at the ICC’s annual conference in Singapore. Howard has not withdrawn from the race but will stand by Cricket Australia’s decision if it does not retain him.No names were discussed as possible new candidates and the board will not be asked to consider a nomination until its next meeting on August 13. “Jack gave a highly detailed debrief to the directors and one of the key things he stressed was that Australia and New Zealand were joined at the hip throughout this process,” a Cricket Australia spokesman told Cricinfo. “They want to remain that way as they move forward.”New Zealand Cricket’s board will discuss the situation on July 23 before further talks take place between its chairman Alan Isaac and Clarke. When the ICC board rejected Howard’s elevation it gave the organisations until the end of August to provide another option. One person who is definitely not in contention is Mark Taylor, the former Australia captain. He has ruled himself out due to his commentary, business and family interests. Allan Border, a former board member and Test leader, is also not interested. In the early stages of the process New Zealand promoted its former chairman Sir John Anderson for the role, but Howard, 70, won the nomination following a decision made by an independent panel. That move was stopped in Singapore when six board members from Asia, Africa and the West Indies signed a letter opposing Howard. The issue did not even get to a vote.
