Newcastle takeover claim from Bernard

Olivier Bernard has dropped a big claim on the potential takeover of Newcastle United by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium.

The Lowdown: Cases await

Mike Ashley is currently awaiting two cases against the Premier League over his stalled takeover deal with the KSA group.

One is the upcoming Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) hearing, which is set to take place on Wednesday at 10:30 am, and the other is the separate arbitration proceedings, which are set to commence next year after further delays (The Mag).

The Latest: Bernard on takeover

Speaking to The Chronicle, former Magpies player Bernard has now claimed that he still thinks that the proposed takeover will happen despite delays in proceedings, but admits that he cannot put a timeframe on its potential completion:

“There’s a lot of going on at the club in terms of selling to new owners. I suspect everybody feels the same way, some will feel it’s quite imminent but at the same time quite far.

“Everybody chooses to go week by week hoping for a better tomorrow. Even the owner has said himself it should be done in the next few months.

“It’s coming, I think there will be a takeover, the problem is when? It’s not clever for the owner to put money in when he thinks he’s sold the club.

“That leaves a difficult situation on the pitch because we as fans want more quality on the pitch. But at the same time, we all want the club sold and hopefully now the Premier League can decide if this takeover takes place or not.”

The Verdict: CAT case key

The upcoming CAT case is likely to be key in terms of the direction of where the potential takeover is heading.

A positive result for the St. James’ Park faithful would give them supreme confidence going into the arbitration process, whereas a negative one may even cancel the proceedings.

Nonetheless, the focus now should be about the team getting results on the pitch after a tough start that sees the North East club low down in the Premier League table, as relegation could spell the end of the takeover dream.

Flintoff optimistic he'll be fit for Test

England received a boost ahead of Wednesday’s opening Test against West Indies after Andrew Flintoff came through a long session in the nets at Sabina Park and indicated that he should be fit to play

England received a boost ahead of Wednesday’s opening Test against West Indies after Andrew Flintoff came through a long session in the nets at Sabina Park and indicated that he should be fit to play.Flintoff, who injured his side in the tour opener last week, was considered doubtful but he has made a quicker than expected recovery. “All things are pointing to being all right, so barring a mishap tomorrow I should be fine,” he told the BBC. “It’s all right when you’re fresh. Having bowled today I’ll see how I cope tomorrow, send a couple more overs down and hopefully take it from there.””We’re cautiously optimistic at the moment,” Andrew Strauss, the captain, said. “Fred is ahead of where the medical staff wanted him, so that is really encouraging but you can never be 100% sure on these things until the day before the game. Once the scan came back with no tear, we were always keen to play him in the first Test but you never know how these things will react and how stiff and sore he is going to be. So far he looks as though as he has come through it well and we will see how he goes in the two practice days before the Test.”If Flintoff does play then it will allow Strauss to go into the game with five front-line bowlers, something that will make his life easier after England struggled against a West Indies A side last weekend.”Certainly the bowlers were forced to bowl a lot of overs and they responded very well,” said Strauss. “The way they kept bowling spell after spell after spell was encouraging and showed they are in pretty good physical condition. “It’s a little bit hard to say how incisive they were because this wicket was ridiculously flat.”The other question mark surrounds Steve Harmison, who was dropped for England last Test in Mohali and who blew hot and cold in the drawn warm-up match in St Kitts. However, memories of his career-best 7 for 12 when England last played a Test at Sabina Park will be at the back of everyone’s minds. With the pitch likely to be fast, Harmison’s chances of a recall seem good.”From Harmy’s point of view it was great for him to play two matches and get a lot of overs under his belt,” Strauss said. “We all know that the more Harmy bowls, the more rhythm he gets into and the quicker he gets it through as well. I think he got better and better each spell he bowled and he has definitely got his name in the hat. It was difficult to tell much from this last pitch but his areas were good and his pace increased throughout.”Harmison himself, inevitably faced with a barrage of questions about his 2004 performance, was revealing little. “I don’t remember much about that day, it is a bit of a blur. I’m not really one for watching old tapes, so I can’t recall it specifically.”I’m looking forward to going back, especially if they produce a wicket like that, but I don’t want to count any chickens.”

ICL recruits begin fight against bans with letter to PCB

Pakistan’s ICL recruits have finally restarted a legal process to fight the bans imposed on them by the PCB from playing domestic and international cricket.

Pakistan’s ICL recruits have finally restarted a legal process to fight the bans imposed on them by the PCB from playing domestic and international cricket. A letter has been sent by the legal firm of retired judge Fakhruddin G Ebrahim to the PCB on behalf of the players. Currently, however, the communication is not “a legal notice”, a board official said.”No legal action is being taken just yet but we have received a letter from the firm,” the official told Cricinfo. “The letter asks us why we have banned them and under what rules.”The board has not responded yet, though it is understood the issue will be brought up at the ICC executive board meeting due to take place in Perth on January 31. Only after a clearer picture emerges from there will they respond to the queries. The move comes more than a year after a group of ICL players, led by Imran Farhat and Taufeeq Umar, first attempted to take the matter to court. They started the process towards the end of 2007 but it then petered out. The process has started again, said a prominent ICL player, because the environment is ripe for it.”We tried doing it in 2007 but Nasim Ashraf [the then PCB chairman] had too many connections in the government of the time,” the player told Cricinfo. “Whenever we did something or tried, it would come up against a dead end because Ashraf would use his friends in power to stop proceedings. So we decided to just wait it out till the government changed. Now it has and so has the administration and we feel, from the comments they have made, that we can progress this time.”The current board administration under Ijaz Butt has been far more ambiguous about the ban on the players than the one under Ashraf and seems far more willing to look for ways out of the situation. Pakistan has 19 players in the ICL – some of them, like Abdul Razzaq and Mohammad Yousuf, still good enough to play for the country.Javed Miandad, the PCB’s director-general, has openly called for the bans to be removed claiming they hurt Pakistan and are only in place to appease BCCI interests. Butt, however, has been vague and often confused over the stance. He insists it is up to the ICC to resolve the matter and that the PCB does not want to ban the players.”We don’t want our players to be banned because they have contracts with the ICL,” Butt said on a TV show two weeks ago. “But unfortunately we can’t do anything unless the ICC changes its stance on this issue.”The PCB has not directly banned the players, We have banned them under the ICC rules,” he said. “The rules state that no tournament can be held without the home board’s permission and, in the case of the ICL, the Indian board [BCCI] does not recognise it as it runs its own league, the IPL.”Board officials have been examining legal aspects of the case since before the letter was sent to fully brief Butt before he attends the Perth meeting. The letter has been sent on behalf of almost all of Pakistan’s 19 ICL players and Moin Khan, coach of the ICL’s Lahore Badshahs team, is believed to be handling the matter as a representative of sorts.

West Ham fans erupt over Carabao draw

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United supporters have erupted over the official announcement involving their team’s progression in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening.

David Moyes’ men put a regrettable 2-1 weekend defeat to Manchester United behind them as they exacted revenge with a memorable 1-0 win at Old Trafford.

Manuel Lanzini scored the only goal of the game to eventually confirm his side’s place in the Carabao Cup Last 16 in what was a solid and impressive display from the Hammers overall.

However, following this brilliant evening up north, an official announcement was then dropped which has left West Ham fans with plenty to say.

Indeed, as confirmed by the club, the Irons will play host to Premier League champions Manchester City in the next round as they gear up to take on yet another Premier League giant.

Erupting over this news, it’s safe to say supporters are cursing their luck with West Ham seemingly having it all to do.

Forest dealt Grabban injury blow

Nottingham Forest have been dealt a major injury blow ahead of their upcoming Championship clash.

What’s the latest?

In recent comments made to the Nottingham Forest YouTube channel, Steve Cooper revealed that he expects to be unable to call upon Lewis Grabban for the trip to Barnsley on Wednesday evening, as the centre-forward picked up a thigh injury in the Reds’ 1-1 draw with Millwall last weekend.

Speaking about the condition of the 33-year-old, Cooper said: “He’s doubtful. That’s obviously a little bit disappointing for him because he did so well against Huddersfield and started quite well the other day. We’re working as hard as we can to get him ready but whether he features again this week, I’m not too sure.”

Cooper will be gutted

While Grabban has not exactly been in the best form of his career so far this season, considering the fact that Cooper dubbed the centre-forward a “really important” player in his Forest side after the Millwall game, the absence of the Jamaica international for the trip to Oakwell is sure to have left the 41-year-old gutted.

Indeed, over his eight Championship appearances this term, the £1.08m-rated man has scored two goals and registered one assist, as well as taking an average of 0.9 shots and making 0.8 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the 33-year-old average a SofaScore match rating of 6.70, ranking him as the Reds’ joint 10th-best player in the second tier this season.

As such, despite his rather average level of performance so far this term, the loss of the striker will nevertheless dent the club’s chances of picking up a positive result against Barnsley – with Cooper undoubtedly being desperate to secure his first win as the new Forest manager, in order to start moving his side up the Championship table.
