Norris: Rodrigo De Paul would’ve been a top target for Leeds

Rodrigo De Paul would have been at the top of Marcelo Bielsa’s transfer shortlist this summer, claims former Leeds United midfielder David Norris.

Leeds have been heavily linked with a move for the 27-year-old, with Goal reporting on the Yorkshire club and Atletico Madrid’s interest at the start of the month.

It is the latter, though, who have seemingly come out on top. According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the La Liga champions have struck a €35m (roughly £30m) deal with Udinese for De Paul.

It comes as a huge blow to Leeds, whose interest goes all the way back to the last summer transfer window.

Speaking exclusively to FFC about the Whites’ failed pursuit of De Paul, Norris said:

“It probably would have been in their top one or two targets, so when that doesn’t come off, it is always a little bit disappointing for the manager and obviously sometimes doesn’t look great from the outside in.”

Indeed, it certainly is disappointing for Bielsa given how long Leeds have been chasing De Paul.

As well as that, the Premier League outfit, of course, quite simply missed out on a quality player.

Last season, the Argentina international scored nine goals and provided nine assists in Serie A. He also averaged an impressive 3.4 dribbles per game, more than any Leeds player (via WhoScored).

SAFC fans love Sloanes exit

Sunderland fans have been reacting to the news that Tom Sloanes has resigned from the club’s Board of Directors with immediate effect.

The Black Cats suffered heartbreak last term. They appeared to be on the verge of automatic promotion to the Championship, but a poor run of form saw them drop into the play-offs instead. There, they lost to Lincoln City in the semi-finals, and their hopes were therefore over.

Sunderland will be aiming to go up again this year. There has been a lot of change at the club recently, in particular with Kyril Louis-Dreyfus replacing Stewart Donald as the club’s owner. There has now been another exit, as well, with the club confirming Sloanes has left his role at the Stadium of Light (safc.com).

The news was shared on Sunderland’s official Twitter account, and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about the Sloanes exit below

India hindered by poor captaincy

To say the least, I am highly disappointed by the way Ganguly led theside when their opponents were rebuilding their innings

Erapalli Prasanna16-Apr-2002

To say the least, I am highly disappointed by the way Ganguly led theside when their opponents were rebuilding their innings. He seemedoverly confident in Anil Kumble’s ability and persisted with SanjayBangar at the other end, allowing Hooper and Ramnaresh Sarwan tosettle down.

Sourav Ganguly and his boys, when they set off on their tour of theCaribbean, knew one thing for sure – that this was their bestopportunity of rewriting the history of the 1971 tour of the WestIndies. This Windies team is nowhere near the class and competitivestandards of the ones of the yesteryears. Players of the calibre ofSir Garfield Sobers, Rohan Kanhai, Alvin Kallicharan, Sir VivianRichards and Gordon Greenidge are in another league altogether whencompared to the present lot.In the bowling department too, the West Indies do not even have onebowler who could claim to be in the league of Andy Roberts, MalcolmMarshall, Michael Holding, Joel Garner, Curtly Ambrose or even LanceGibbs. The only players who are of genuine international class in thepresent team are Brian Lara and the skipper Carl Hooper; their bowlingis an apology when compared to the attack that they once possessed. The Indian fans, thus, would have been heartened as their side got offto a promising start to the Test series by having the West Indies onthe mat early on the first day. I thought Javagal Srinath bowledbeautifully to pick up three early wickets, including that of BrianLara. But after that, a story that has been played out often beforestarted to do so again; two vital catches dropped in a short span oftime, and Hooper, the biggest beneficiary of such generosity, Hooper, went on to compile a superb innings. In my opinion, Sarandeep Singh was under-bowled, andGanguly should have gone for a combination of Srinath and SarandeepSingh to attack the two new batsmen. It was nothing other than poorcaptaincy, and poor bowling by Kumble and Bangar, that helped the WestIndies get out of jail.Ganguly captained the side unimaginatively, giving the impression thathe was waiting for the match to take its course and allowed things todrift. I am not even sure whether he had a game plan at all. It wasbaffling to see Hooper and Shivnarine Chanderpaul score runs freely,Ganguly doing nothing to stop the flow.Harbhajan Singh’s absence was felt badly at this stage; I have astrong feeling that Ganguly depends just too much on Harbhajan’sability to get wickets. This may possibly have affected his captaincy;he also failed to set the kind of field required to save the runs. Insumming up, therefore, Ganguly looked a totally lost man on theground.I always believed that how the Indian opening batsmen deal with thefirst few overs by the West Indies pacemen would set the trend for therest of the series. Dillon sorted out Ganguly on a docile wicket withsome purposeful fast bowling. I fail to understand the reasoningbehind Hooper’s decision not to declare at the overnight score andhence refused his fast bowlers an opportunity of using the earlymorning moisture in the wicket.Once again the Indian middle-order was exposed, and the onus fell onSachin Tendulkar to play a crucial knock. The little master playedadmirably to score a useful 79 runs, inspiring Rahul Dravid and VVSLaxman to handle the pace attack much better as well. The two batsmenplayed with a lot of tenacity and courage, something they alsodisplayed against the Australians in the epic Kolkata Test.Dravid, in particular, showed tremendous character and determinationto play one of his best Test innings that I have seen. Many followersof the game do not accord enough credit to this lad from Karnataka. Ihave known him for a long time, and it is no secret that he possessesan abundance of natural talent and fighting abilities. His batting inthis Test match would make any cricketer proud. If not for the rainplaying spoilsport, Dravid may even have gone on to a double hundred.I must also commend Sarandeep Singh highly for the valuable support hegave to Dravid. It not only helped Dravid reach his century but alsohelped his side avoid the follow-on. I hope the team managementretains Sarandeep for the second Test; they should play three spinnersand should have a close look at the utility of Bangar. As for Deep Dasgupta, it is not the missed catches and stumpings thatcause worry; it is the fact that he has trouble in even gathering theball. He seems to have lost confidence in his own ability and appearsto be taking his eyes off the ball before gathering it. I think thecoach has an obligation to help players who need technical assistance, and Dasgupta definitely needs it. One can only think, then, that AjayRatra would do better behind the stumps than Dasgupta. From what I have heard, the wicket at the Queen’s Park Oval in Portof-Spain is a re-laid one. I think both the teams are currently at thesame level, and India enjoy the edge only in the spinning department. If the visitors are to pull off a win, they will have to bowl last sothat the spinners can cause maximum damage to the home side.

Zimbabwe stumble to 248/8 on opening day

Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Zimbabwe threatened to make good their skipper’s threat of putting a 450-plus score on the board

Anand Vasu21-Feb-2002Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Zimbabwe threatened to make good their skipper’s threat of putting a 450-plus score on the board. However, a threat alone, without a show of force, is never worth much. Just when the support cast decided to click, the lead actor dropped out. Without a big knock from Andy Flower, it was evident that there was no way Zimbabwe would do better than their eventual 248/8. No disrespect at all to Stuart Carlisle and his fighting 77, though; he did his bit admirably.Zaheer Khan, fresh from his consecutive 10-wicket hauls in domestic cricket, generated good pace on a wicket that is better suited to a game of clay-court tennis than three seamers charging in and trying to snuff out defensive batsmen. Flat, dry, and with cracks that threaten to open up and beckon to the tweakers from as early as the morning of the third day, this is a standard Nagpur wicket. To his credit, the Baroda left-arm seamer made the best use of what little movement there was early on before using the old ball to reverse-swing prodigiously. Bowling from over the wicket to the right-handers, Zaheer Khan managed to get a good angle going away from the batsmen, ending the day with figures of 3/45. Anil Kumble, a bit lucky at times, backed up well, taking 3/72.Nasser Hussain, in England’s recent tour of India warned of “turgid cricket.” Carlisle has said to the press that he wanted to “attack like the English.” He means it. Despite a lot of people writing off Zimbabwe, Carlisle the batsman took his job very seriously indeed. Maybe there were no flashing drives, no powerful horizontal bat shots, and the spectators may have been less than thrilled with Carlisle’s approach, but it did the visitors a world of good.Carlisle, living upto the new-found responsibility of being captain, showed that he was not overawed by the reputation of India being tigers at home, and he certainly is not alone in that respect in this Zimbabwean team. The Royal Bengal, thus, looks to be highly endangered, struggling to survive these days. Hitting tweaker Harbhajan Singh over long-on for a six was only the icing on the cake – a wholesome, sumptuous one, rather than the rich kind associated with flat batting wickets.Keen to stick around in the middle, Carlisle negotiated the swinging old ball with care until a comedy of errors sorted him out. The visiting captain edged an off-break from Harbhajan Singh, only for keeper Deep Dasgupta to grass the catch. The batsmen should never have contemplated a single. Never run off a misfield, they say; but perhaps in Zimbabwe, they do not have any old sayings about running off dropped catches. Before Carlisle could make the 22 yards to safety at the bowler’s end, Shiv Sunder Das had fired the ball across for the bowler to whip off the bails, saving his East Zone colleague the blushes. A captain’s knock of 77 (204 b, 10×4, 1×6) came to a sorry end.Aside from Carlisle’s knock, there were two events that Zimbabwean scribes can write home about. Depending on whom you support, and whether you want the good news or the bad news first, here they are.”Flower blooms,” “Andy blossoms,” “Indian bowlers wilt” and similar horticultural headlines were dashed by a searing in-swinging yorker from Zaheer Khan. Andy Flower’s 3 will please the Indians no end. Nightmares of the last series, when Flower averaged an uber-Bramanesque 270, will slowly recede into the background. The good news for Zimbabwe was the tidy half-century that Alistair Campbell helped himself to. Batting with elan, the tall left-hander timed the ball sweetly to the fence on nine occasions. On 57, Campbell must have had visions of another century at Nagpur. After scoring a boundary and a brace, with the adrenaline running high, Campbell slapped a cover drive to VVS Laxman at short cover. The sharp catch was held, and Zimbabwe had lost their second wicket. That apart, the batting card did not make healthy reading Trevor Gripper, Gavin Rennie, Grant Flower, Heath Streak and Tatenda Taibu all failed to reach even 25.Travis Friend provided some welcome entertainment towards the end, thrashing the ball around to all parts to reach 33 off just 31 balls with six hits to the fence. In doing so, he injected some life into Zimbabwe’s batting display. That might have brought a smile to the Zimbabwe camp, but it will not be enough to take the visitors to a comfortable score in this Test match.

Province Bowl team do the double

Western Province B completed a five wicket victory over Border B to complete the double, having already claimed the UCB Bowl 3-Day competition earlier in the week

Peter le Grange27-Mar-2002Western Province B completed a five wicket victory over Border B to complete the double, having already claimed the UCB Bowl 3-Day competition earlier in the week.Border never really got going in their innings after being sent in to bat in cool conditions with rain always threatening, and despite chipping away at the WP batting order, were always on the back foot in the field.Gareth Berg bowled Smith in the third over to set the visitors back, but Laden Gamiet and Burton de Wett kept the scoreboard ticking along nicely with a 54 run partnership off 72 balls. After Gamiet fell to Mark de Stadler, the aggressive Wayne Wiblin immediately got on with the boundary hitting. Their partnership of 40 off 51 balls raised the 100 in the 22nd over, at which point they were well placed to post a commanding score.Berg then returned, bowling de Wett with the first ball of his second spell. Paul Harris joined the attack, strangling the batsmen from the start. Wiblin managed just two singles off the last 16 balls he faced before lashing out at Ian Trott, and the middle order subsided to 140 for 6 in the 36th over. The experienced duo of Ian Mitchell and Piet Botha batted out the overs, their unbeaten partnership contributing 52 off 59 balls, and Border had posted a respectable but not overawing target of 4.3 to the over. Harris had the best return, taking a single wicket but conceding less than three an over, despite being hit for two successive boundaries by Sodumo in his fifth over.Heavy rain during the lunch break threatened to force the match into a replay, but the rain was short lived and the innings began just ten minutes late with no reduction of overs. Rashaad Magiet made a purposeful start, scoring 12 off his own bat in the first two overs. Botha tightened up, but his opening partner Maketa was rested after conceding 13 in his opening spell of three overs.Botha was rewarded with Magiet’s wicket in the 11th over, but Ryan Maron and JP Duminy broke the back of the task with a partnership of 79 off 116 balls. Maron could have been dismissed several times, but luck was on his side. Their partnership was broken in comical circumstances as he and Maron were involved in a massive misunderstanding. Maron rode his luck, hitting out whenever possible to record his 50 off 87 balls, and went on to reach 60 before he eventually succeeded in getting a faint edge to Justin Kreusch. The home side then had a flutter, Jonathan Trott and Wesley Euley following Maron in quick succession. Jonathan McLean steadied the ship, scoring at more than a run a ball and lofting two sixes. He almost ran himself out with the scores tied, but survived to hit the winning run with 12 balls to spare to bring down the curtain on yet another extremely successful season for the Western Province Bowl squad.

Estamos em outro momento, é outro time.

A gente conversa.
