O duelo

Higor Leite cobrou falta, Erivélton desviou e venceu o goleiro Andrey.

Debutant Vitori removes openers

After bowling Zimbabwe out for 370, Bangladesh scored at a brisk rate, but lost three wickets to give Zimbabwe the advantage

The Report by Firdose Moonda in Harare05-Aug-2011
Live Scorecard and ball-by-ball details Bangladesh managed to stage a fightback on the second day in Harare•Associated Press

Zimbabwe and Bangladesh ended a competitive second day with the Test finely balanced between the sides. Bangladesh batted with a similar caution to the one Zimbabwe’s batsmen implemented on a pitch that remains good for batting but offers something for the bowlers as well.Zimbabwe’s opening bowlers, debutants Brian Vitori and Kyle Jarvis, made a threatening start but Chris Mpofu and Elton Chigumbura operated as containing, rather than attacking, change-bowlers. Ray Price chipped in with economical overs towards the end of the day and worked to deceive the batsmen with generous flight.Vitori and Jarvis made impressive starts to their international careers, bowling at good pace and extracting fine carry from the pitch. Left-armer Vitori got consistent away movement from the left-handers while bringing the ball into the right-handers. He controlled the short ball well and was rewarded when Imrul Kayes was forced to play at one that held its line and got an outside edge through to first slip. He dismissed Tamim Iqbal in similar fashion, making him play at a length ball that caught the edge and found a diving Brendan Taylor at second slip. Jarvis was the quicker of the two though he occasionally pitched it too full. The pair proved a handful for Shahriah Nafees, who was dropped by Tino Mawoyo at third slip when he was on eight, and he shuffled through a frenetic first hour, looking restless and edgy. Nafees was allowed to become more comfortable after tea and judged when to leave with more assurance.Mpofu and Chigumbura both bowled a focused line and continued to pepper Nafees and Mohammad Ashraful with short balls, though the strategy failed to make an impact. Even before the match started, Zimbabwe talked up using a back-of-a-length line to intimidate Bangladesh but Nafees and Ashraful contended with it admirably.Ashraful played with almost Brendan Taylor-like patience, watching, leaving, and playing only when the occasion called for it. The bulk of his runs came in boundaries, with the pick of them being a straight drive that was pushed past the non-striker with impeccable timing. He held his own even when Nafees ran out of luck and was bowled by a Price delivery that popped off the bat and onto the bail. Together with Mahmudullah, he saw Bangladesh to a reasonably safe position overnight.Zimbabwe would have been disappointed with their batting as their middle and lower order collapsed with eight wickets falling for just 66 runs. They showed only glimpses of the concentration and application shown by their top order, with poor shot selection costing them.Shafiul and Robiul Islam began the morning with the opposite approach to the one they employed on day one and bowled wicket to wicket and fuller instead of wide of offstump or too short, forcing defensive strokes and making it hard for Taylor and Hamilton Masakadza to score. After 13 overs, the pair had added just nine runs to the overnight total and appeared to be stagnating.Masakadza eventually managed to bring up his second Test century with an elegant clip to square leg. His innings was a display of maturity and technical aptitude and once he reached his milestone he was able to play with more freedom.Taylor, who had batted sedately for the most part of his innings, reached his 50 off 140 balls with a rare shot of aggression, a crunching cut. Just as Taylor and Masakadza were getting ready to up the tempo, Masakadza drove away from his body and found the edge, which was gobbled up by Kayes at first slip. With that breakthrough, Bangladesh went into hunting mode and Mahmudullah was brought on after 19 overs. His only task was to remove left-hander Craig Ervine, which he did by trapping him lbw, and he was promptly taken out of the attack after two overs. Taylor crept back into his shell with those two losses and struggled with his footwork, causing his own undoing, when he slashed at a Robiul delivery and was caught behind. The panic set in when Shakib Al Hasan removed Elton Chigumbura on the stroke of lunch, with the former captain getting a top edge in his attempt to sweep, giving Bangladesh bragging rights after the first period. They kept up the intensity after the break with Shakib keeping five men around the bat. Rubel Hossain showed the same aggression in bowling to the lower order and removed Price but it was Shakib who made big breakthroughs, enticing Tatenda Taibu forward with a full delivery and getting Vitori to hole out to deep midwicket.

Ruhuna, Wayamba advance to final

A round-up of the semi-finals of the Sri Lanka Cricket Inter-Provincial Twenty20

ESPNcricinfo staff30-Jul-2011Ruhuna advanced to the final of the Sri Lanka Inter-Provincial Twenty20 tournament, beating Kandurata by seven runs at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Asked to bat, Ruhuna’s batsmen put in a collective effort, with useful 20s from Dinesh Chandimal, TM Sampath, Janaka Gunaratne and Chinthaka Perera. Perera’s was the quickest, his 21 coming off 10 balls and boosting Ruhuna to 155 for 8. Kandurata faltered in their chase, struggling at 29 for 4. But Tharanga Paranavitana launched a fighting recovery with a 33-ball 46 and Jehan Mubarak made a steady 28 to give Kandurata hope. But left-arm seamer Chanaka Welegedara cut through the lower order to pick up three wickets and help Ruhuna edge the semi-final.The first semi-final between Basnahira and Wayamba at the Premadasa Stadium was decided by a coin toss, owing to persistent rain and the difficulty in accommodating a bowl-out to decide the finalist. Wayamba went through to the final after winning the toss. The winner of the final will take part in the qualifier stage of the Champions League to be held in India later in the year.

Davies stars as Surrey show class

Openers Steven Davies and Rory Hamilton-Brown blasted 107 in just 10.1 overs as Surrey started their Friends Life t20 campaign in style

02-Jun-2011
ScorecardOpeners Steven Davies and Rory Hamilton-Brown blasted 107 in just 10.1 overs as Surrey started their Friends Life t20 campaign in style by overwhelming Gloucestershire by eight wickets under The Oval lights.Victory came with three overs in hand as Davies, with 92 not out from 55 balls, and Hamilton-Brown, who made 45 from 27 balls before being stumped off a wide, thrashed the Gloucestershire bowling to all parts. Muttiah Muralitharan, making his debut for Gloucestershire, was hit for 14 by Davies from his first over – including a six over long on.There were three sixes and 13 fours in all for left-hander Davies, who thrilled a 8,249-strong crowd with some exquisite as well as powerful strokeplay. Gloucestershire’s 155 for 8 always looked like being an inadequate total on a true Oval surface, but the power of Surrey’s reply was still quite astonishing.Hamilton-Brown took three fours from David Payne’s opening over, and Davies did the same to Jon Lewis in the second over. Surrey were 28 for no wicket after those two new-ball overs and 54 without loss after five. Then came Muralitharan’s expensive first over and Davies’ half-century arrived in only the ninth over. By the end of that, Surrey were 95 and Gloucestershire just did not know where to bowl at the rampant opening pair.It was a great start to the Twenty20 competition for Surrey, who are also top of their Clydesdale Bank 40 group and have lost just one match in all competitions. They also saw a fine debut from fast bowler Dirk Nannes, the Australian and former Holland Twenty20 specialist, who took three wickets. Nannes made two early inroads into the Gloucestershire batting, striking in each of his first two overs for his new club to remove Alex Gidman to a catch at the wicket and Chris Taylor, who miscued an attempted hook to short fine-leg.Kevin O’Brien and Kane Williamson, with sixes over long on and long off respectively from the bowling of Yasir Arafat and Chris Schofield, briefly put the pressure back on Surrey’s bowlers. But Ireland’s World Cup star O’Brien was then well caught by Zander de Bruyn in the deep for a 19-ball 24 and – later in the same over – Hamish Marshall edged to wicketkeeper Davies, who took a smart catch standing up to seamer Tim Linley.Williamson was badly dropped on 25 by Gareth Batty at long off, as he tried to clear the ropes off Schofield, and with the fielder knocking the ball over the boundary for four to compound his error. The young New Zealander was, however, run out shortly afterwards for 32 and Gloucestershire were 94 for 6 in the 15th over when Richard Coughtrie was lbw trying to reverse-sweep off spinner Batty.A stand of 45 in 4.2 overs between Will Gidman, who improvised superbly in an innings of 40 not out from 37 balls that contained only two fours, and Ed Young revitalised the Gloucestershire innings.Young swung a ball from Matt Spriegel high over mid-wicket for six and also belted four fours in his 28. Young was lbw aiming a paddle-sweep at Arafat, but Jon Lewis then came in to hit his first two balls, from Arafat, for four and six. Nannes, however, trapped Lewis lbw with the final ball of the innings to give himself excellent figures of 3 for 25.

Test cricket is the 'pinnacle' – Bopara

England batsman Ravi Bopara has insisted that Test cricket is “the pinnacle” after putting his county ahead of a lucrative IPL contract in order to strengthen his claims for an England Test spot

England batsman Ravi Bopara has insisted that Test cricket is “the pinnacle” after putting his county ahead of a lucrative IPL contract in order to strengthen his claims for an England Test spot. Bopara, who made a low-key start to the County Championship for Essex against Kent at Chelmsford, was one of a host of players left unsold during the IPL auction in January.Rajasthan Royals, on the lookout for a replacement for Paul Collingwood, whose knee surgery ruled him out of the Twenty20 tournament, subsequently contacted Bopara with a £100,000 offer but he turned them down in order to focus on his return to the Test side.”It was a tough decision [to turn down IPL offer], but my ambition as a youngster has always been to play Test cricket and to play for my country,” Bopara told . “Not everything’s about money. I’ve got to make sure I fulfil my ambitions and my talent as a cricketer. Although Twenty20 is a very important part of the game, Test cricket is always going to be the pinnacle.”Bopara, whose last Test was against Australia at Headingley in 2009, consulted Ronnie Irani and Graham Gooch prior to making his decision. “It’s important for me to get back into that Test side,” he said. “I recognise this is a great opportunity with a spot available, so I spoke to Graham Gooch and Ronnie Irani and they thought the best decision was for me to stay and perform for Essex and push for selection.””Nothing’s going to get me in that side apart from numbers. Wickets, runs, anything I can contribute to Essex will make a difference in me being selected. Every season is a big season, but this is my opportunity to get back into that team. There are spots available now, and somebody’s got to take it.”The first Test of the English summer is on May 26, against Sri Lanka, and there is a vacancy to be filled in the middle order following Collingwood’s retirement. Eoin Morgan is generally regarded as the favourite for the position having been the spare batsman in Australia, but he will spend the next five weeks at the IPL so a strong start from Bopara in the Championship will keep the selectors interested.Bopara also comes with the advantage of being able to offer some useful overs which would replace the part-time medium pace of Collingwood and supplement a likely four-man attack from England.Gooch, batting coach for England and Essex, agreed that Bopara could only force a return through good returns in the Championship. “I think he has made the right decision,” he said. “He is very motivated to achieve and if he wants to make his mark on the Test side he will only do that with championship runs. He can’t further his cause in the IPL, however many runs he gets.”
