India fly miles for match without context

ESPNcricinfo previews the one-off Twenty20 between South Africa and India at the Wanderers

Start time 1730 (1530 GMT)This game will mean a lot to Jacques Kallis•Associated Press

Big PictureIf you thought India’s away season had ended with the Asia Cup, then you are wrong. There’s one more game, a Twenty20 against South Africa at the Wanderers, shoehorned into the tiny gap between the Asia Cup and the start of the IPL, which starts five days later. It’s the sort of scheduling usually reserved for unofficial charity games. South Africa have just arrived from a full tour of New Zealand. When this game was announced officially earlier this month, the big question was not , but .Cricket South Africa has announced that this will be an annual affair, following last year’s Twenty20 game between the two sides at the Moses Mabhida stadium in Durban. That match was Makhaya Ntini’s farewell game. Tomorrow’s match is dedicated to Jacques Kallis, and the proceeds will go to his scholarship foundation. The game might be for a noble cause, but is anybody aware that it is even happening? National newspapers in India have dedicated vast amounts of column space to the lead-up to the IPL. There’s little mention that the national team has flown to the southern hemisphere again, to play a solitary match. The channel broadcasting the game in India have started a countdown to the game as a bid to aggressively market it in the middle of two ongoing international series.Fans can be forgiven if they say they are fatigued, but MS Dhoni, the India captain, insists his team is not. It is his style to put a positive spin on everything, even when the ship is sinking. His team and the support-staff have clocked so many air miles in the last few months that they probably feel sick at the sight of airport lounges and hotel rooms. A one-off match with little context is the last thing they would have wanted.South Africa have shown some compassion, resting their jet-lagged senior Test players (except Kallis and Lonwabo Tsotsobe). There’s no rest for India’s seniors, bar Sachin Tendulkar (though he doesn’t play T20 internationals). Perhaps this could be seen as a last-ditch attempt to end a horrific season with a win. The IPL franchises have already vented their displeasure about the odd scheduling of this game because the India players are missing from the pre-tournament camps. The hosts are winding down their domestic season so this game hardly disrupts their plans.A year down the line, if you forget this game took place, don’t beat yourself up. In this era of “cricket excess”, it’s hard enough to remember a game which finished yesterday.Form Guide(most recent first)
South Africa WWLWL
India WLLLWIn the spotlightWhen Richard Levi’s name was called out at the IPL auction this year, it did not create a ripple. A blazing century off 45 balls (a record for Twenty20 internationals) in Hamilton made those franchises sit up. He was promptly signed up by Mumbai Indians. This will be most Indian fans’ first chance to see him.India’s bowlers conceded 329 and 289 in their last two one-day internationals. Their generosity peaked in the match against Bangladesh, where they dished out full-tosses by the dozen. That malaise affected Australia recently. Praveen Kumar and Irfan Pathan have shown they can bowl swinging yorkers, though sporadically. Death bowling could be the difference for India.Pitch and conditionsA batting track is expected. The altitude in Johannesburg, though, could test the India players.TeamsThe hosts seem to be approaching the game quite casually. The 13 players did not train, and the captain Johan Botha hadn’t even met the coach Gary Kirsten the day before the game. There were rumours that the uncapped batsman Farhaan Behardian will play.South Africa (probable) 1 Richard Levi, 2 Farhaan Behardian, 3 Jacques Kallis, 4 Faf du Plessis, 5 Colin Ingram, 6 Albie Morkel, 7 Dane Vilas/Morne van Wyk (wk), 8 Johan Botha (capt), 9 Wayne Parnell, 10 Rusty Theron, 11 Lonwabo TsotsobeIndia, for whatever logic, picked 15 players for a solitary match. There were no announcements from the India camp. Robin Uthappa, coming off good form for Karnataka in the domestic one-dayers, looks good for a recall. Manoj Tiwary has sat on the bench ever since he scored a one-day century in December. Will his wait end?India (probable) 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Robin Uthappa, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Rohit Sharma, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 Ravindra Jadeja, 7 MS Dhoni (capt/wk), 8 Irfan Pathan, 9 R Ashwin, 10 Praveen Kumar, 11 Ashok DindaStats and Trivia India are returning to the venue where they played their first ever Twenty20. Albie Morkel is the only survivor for South Africa from that game. India lead the head-to-head in Twenty20s by an overwhelming 4-1. The Wanderers has the highest runs-per-over – 8.23 – among grounds which have hosted a minimum of eight games.Quotes”There are a lot of young players we are trying to groom, and hopefully it will pay dividends in the future. From our point of view there is a lot of talent around, we need to give them the exposure they require.”
.”With the World Twenty20 coming up in October, every T20 game is important and you can learn in every game.”
Johan Botha says preparation for the World Twenty20 will be the focus in the one-off game.Edited by Dustin Silgardo

Philander prepares for tougher examination

Philander is in the fledgling stages of a career that looks set to take off with all the glory of an eagle in full flight and he cannot be expected to take a five-for every time he walks on to a cricket field

Firdose Moonda in Hamilton12-Mar-2012

Vernon Philander: “If there is movement, I am probably the one bowler that will exploit it”•AFP

More than Newlands, the Wanderers or SuperSport Park, the pitch at the University Oval in Dunedin is the surface Vernon Philander should remember best. It is the only one on which he has not taken a five-wicket haul in an innings and, by implication, has provided him with his biggest challenge so far.Philander is in the fledgling stages of a career that looks set to take off with all the glory of an eagle in full flight and he cannot be expected to take a five-for every time he walks on to a cricket field. What he can expect is for things to get tougher after his dream start, and Brendon McCullum and Ross Taylor and to a lesser extent Trent Boult, gave him a glimpse of what that might look like. With New Zealand nine down going into the third morning, Philander was handed the ball, a gesture that could be seen as him being given the opportunity for another five-for. Instead, he dished up five juicy length balls in succession to Boult who responded by planting them over the boundary rope. Perhaps what made it more insulting was that it was another bowler who was giving Philander the treatment. In the second innings, it was a more intense battle against New Zealand’s two set batsmen. Philander was properly tested. Although he still kept his usual line outside the off stump and got occasional movement away from the batsmen, he did not find the edge. He was forced to try different things on an unresponsive pitch, adjust his gameplans and out-think the opposition rather than just outplay them and he admitted it gave him a few more things to ponder.”Your biggest test is always away from home,” Philander said. “I’ve had the luxury of playing at home in my first few games so it’s a bit of a mental test having to come here and perform as well as I have at home.”The New Zealand tour is Philander’s first Test series outside South Africa and although he maintained that his line will probably work anywhere in the world, he said his lengths have had to change. “It’s a touch slower than what we have back home .So I’ve got to bowl it slightly shorter than what I would do at home,” he said. The Seddon Park pitch in Hamilton is expected to be similar to the one the teams played on in Dunedin and, if anything, it will be drier and more difficult for the rest of the seamers. The one thing on offer may be movement and if it’s there, Philander is convinced he can make it work for him. “If there is movement, I am probably the one bowler that will exploit it,” he said. “I always back myself to get something out of the wicket and with the new ball it’s a big plus for me [to try and do that].”His opening partner, Dale Steyn, has not had the same success of late. Steyn took two wickets in the Test but it has become a talking point that he has not had a five-for in an innings where he has bowled with Philander, something that may be tough if Philander keeps taking all the available wickets. While analysts have started to discuss whether Steyn is bowling within himself, Philander does not believe there is anything to be concerned about. “Dale is a wonderful bowler and bowlers always go through patches like that sometimes,” he said. “It’s going to take one spell to get him back.”Kruger van Wyk said he expected as much from the man he played against in first-class cricket in South Africa at least six years ago, before moving to New Zealand and is enjoying facing him again.”There are not too many weak links in the South African side. Philander has been a top performer in first-class cricket for as long as I can remember, even when I was back there,” he said. “They ask a lot of questions of you as a batter so you have to be on top of your game. But we are up for that challenge, we look forward to playing some good sides and you want to be tested against good players. It will be great to face them again.”

West Indies chase elusive victory

ESPNcricinfo previews the third one-dayer between India and West Indies in Ahmedabad

The Preview by Siddarth Ravindran04-Dec-2011Match factsMonday, December 5
Start time 1430 (0900 GMT)Can West Indies lift their performance and close out a match to keep the series alive?•AFP

Big PictureIt’s been more than a month since West Indies landed in India but they are yet to win a game. They haven’t been pushovers though, and have made India work hard for victory in most of the matches. Their captain, Darren Sammy, has regularly lauded the never-say-die spirit and character of his team, but another defeat on Monday will leave them with only dead rubbers to break their duck. West Indies’ ODI successes in their previous two home series have also come only once the trophy was lost.India have far less to worry about. While the form of the openers is a little concerning, most of their experiments have paid off. They can’t complain too much about the manner in which their new-look pace attack has fared in the first two matches, Rohit Sharma has played two match-turning innings on his comeback, and Ravindra Jadeja has flourished as an allrounder at No. 7. The team management would like some runs for Virender Sehwag and Suresh Raina, though, before the series is over. The massive crowds at the previous two matches in Cuttack and Visakhapatnam have sparked off talk about how India needs to play more at smaller cricketing centres. With the scheduling once again ignoring the weekend, it will be interesting to see what the response is on Monday in Ahmedabad. The Sardar Patel Stadium has already hosted three World Cup matches this year, including a high-profile India v Australia quarter-final. Will the fans show up for a one-day game in which the biggest names on both teams are missing?Form guideIndia WWWWW (Most recent first)
West Indies LLLWWIn the spotlightWhen India toured the West Indies earlier this year, Suresh Raina was the captain of the side, on the back of crucial innings in the quarter-final and semi-final of the World Cup. He failed in the one-dayers in the Caribbean, but had a more fruitful time against England. Still, Virat Kohli’s outstanding form all year, and Rohit’s recent resurgence means Raina could find himself out of the XI when MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh return. He needs a solid innings or two in the remainder of the series to make his case for a place in the starting XI for the Australia tri-series.It’s only two months since Denesh Ramdin made his comeback to the West Indies side after more than a year on the sidelines, partly as a result of not scoring runs. His batting in the few chances since his return haven’t merited him a position as high as No. 6 in the line-up, and he needs to tighten up his keeping as well – dropping Kohli early on proved very costly for West Indies in the second ODI.Pitch and conditionsThe track at the Sardar Patel Stadium will allow the bowlers to extract pace, curator Dhiraj Parsana said on the eve of the match. “The wicket here has always been good for batting, but the bowlers would also have a good time I believe, as they would be able to get good pace,” Parsana said. “The side that wins the toss should bat first.” However, dew could be a factor here, prompting the captains to decide otherwise. “Efforts have been made to keep the [effects of] dew to a minimum,” Parsana said. “We have stopped watering the field three days prior to the match and have also sprayed [the outfield with] a special kind of chemical.”Team newsFor the home side, the person whose place is most under the scanner is Parthiv Patel. The lack of an alternative wicketkeeper in the squad, though, will keep Parthiv in the XI for only his second international game at his home ground. It is unlikely there will be any experimentation in the make-up of the side that won the first two games.India (possible) 1 Parthiv Patel (wk), 2 Virender Sehwag (capt), 3 Gautam Gambhir, 4 Virat Kohli, 5 Rohit Sharma, 6 Suresh Raina, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 R Vinay Kumar, 10 Varun Aaron, 11 Umesh Yadav.West Indies have to decide whether they need to play two specialist quicks when they have three medium-pace bowling allrounders – Darren Sammy, Kieron Pollard and Andre Russell – in the side. There’s also Lendl Simmons to turn to in case a few overs of medium-pace are needed. Marlon Samuels alone isn’t enough for the spin department, particularly in the subcontinent. How they will find a place for an extra spinner remains to be seen.West Indies 1 Lendl Simmons, 2 Adrian Barath, 3 Marlon Samuels, 4 Darren Bravo, 5 Danza Hyatt, 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 8 Darren Sammy (capt), 9 Andre Russell, 10 Kemar Roach, 11 Sunil Narine/Ravi Rampaul.Stats and triviaIndia have now won 11 successive one-dayers at home, comfortably a record, beating their previous longest victorious streak of seven matches between 1981 and 1983Viat Kohli is now 57 short of Jonathan Trott in the race to be the highest run-getter of the year in one-dayersWest Indies have played India at the Sardar Patel Stadium four times, winnings on three occasionsQuotes”It’s difficult to say I am satisfied when you are losing. But we have shown a lot of spirit and created opportunities to win.”

“McGrath is my hero. I am inspired by him and trying to bowl like him.”

Australia look long-term for Ryan Harris

Ryan Harris, Australia’s preferred pace spearhead, has almost certainly played his last Test match for 2011

Daniel Brettig02-Dec-2011

Ryan Harris is Australia’s best fast bowler when fit•AFP

Ryan Harris, Australia’s preferred pace spearhead, has almost certainly played his last Test match for 2011, and will not return until he can get his injury-afflicted body fit enough to guarantee five days of strong bowling. One of the most problematic men among the quintet of players omitted from the Brisbane Tests, Harris, 32, is Australia’s best bowler when fit, but seemingly less likely to remain so with each match he plays. Pat Howard, the team performance manager, has decreed Harris must be brought to a point at which he is capable of performing for five days before he can resume with the team.At present, Howard indicated, two or three days of bowling and fielding is about the best Harris can manage. Currently convalescing after a hip/pelvis complaint, Harris is understood to have been placed on a longer-term fitness program over the next month, and is unlikely to be considered for the Hobart Test or the Boxing Day match against India. He is scheduled to return to bowling in Brisbane on Monday, but will not be rushed back.”The medical team are working particularly hard with a mandate to try to get him back to produce a really good five-day outcome,” Howard told ESPNcricinfo. “We know we could rush him back quickly and get him bowling for two or three days and that doesn’t really help him in the long-term or Australian cricket, so we’re really looking at how do we get Ryan back to play at his best for five days. We all know if we can get him back to that stage, then we’ve got a fantastic asset playing for Australia.”Harris bowled some outstanding spells to help Australia win a Test series in Sri Lanka, and was also among the wickets in the first Test against South Africa in Cape Town. However a hamstring strain kept him out of the third Test of the Sri Lanka series, and he missed the second in South Africa with a hip ailment. He is also managing a degenerative right knee. This combination of trouble spots means that Harris’ fitness can be a day-to-day proposition, and Howard is adamant the Test team led by Michael Clarke should not be second-guessing the fitness of any of its XI. To that end, Howard has suggested that last-minute or even match eve fitness tests may be consigned to the dustbin of history. The early decision to rule out five players from the Brisbane Test squad was a choice made out of consideration for the demands of the summer ahead, but also to ensure that fitness tests and the flying in of shadow players did not disrupt the assembly and preparation of the firs Test team.”What we’re trying not to do is wait until the last day to make a decision on an injured player,” Howard said. “We didn’t wait until 6pm the night before the Test to say Pat Cummins can’t play. We’ve said put in all the physio we can, be very active with that and medical services to get him back to 100%, rather than try to put him out at 80%, and we made that decision with a few of the players looking at we’ve got six Test matches here.”Cummins joined the Australia squad in Brisbane on day two of the first Test against New Zealand, as part of the team’s desire to more closely monitor the fitness and wellbeing of its cricketers. Howard said the team’s medical and fitness staff were being given a greater opportunity to work with the likes of Cummins and Shaun Marsh, also allowing the captain Michael Clarke to see and know precisely how his injured players are going.”Shaun Marsh has been with the team all week, Pat Cummins is coming up to visit, Ryan Harris has been in, Shane Watson’s been in, Mitchell Johnson flew back over [for surgery],” Howard said. “We do want to closely deal with that because that helps the selectors have a deeper squad, that helps the captain understand where his team is going for the next couple of Tests, the strength and conditioning guys monitor that re-entry into games. There is a closer co-ordination of that.”

O duelo

Higor Leite cobrou falta, Erivélton desviou e venceu o goleiro Andrey.
