Romano reveals development on MUFC target

Manchester United have not made any moves in the transfer window so far, but with three weeks left the club has been linked with a number of players, especially in the defensive midfield position.

However, there has been an update on one particular target.

What’s the word?

Fabrizio Romano has revealed on Twitter, that there have been no further developments on Manchester United’s pursuit for Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder, Denis Zakaria.

Romano tweeted on Monday:

“Manchester United have made no bid for Denis Zakaria as things stand. The option has been discussed as he’s appreciated by Rangnick – but there’s still no official bid to Borussia.

“More than four clubs are already working to sign Zakaria as free agent in July. Open race.”

United are reportedly joined by a number of clubs interested in signing the 25-year-old, who is out of contract in the summer, including Premier League clubs, Everton, Leicester and Arsenal, and if the Italian transfer insider’s tweet is to be believed, the chase for his signature remains wide open.

Fans will be gutted

Signing a defensive midfielder has been a long term prospect, especially in the eyes of the fans who have been crying out for in the side for over a year, so they will surely be gutted that no progress has been made on signing the Swiss target.

Taking to social media after a number of poor defensive performances from the Red Devils this season so far, citing how desperately the position needs to be filled, with one Man United fan tweeting:

“2 years ago we looked doomed at end of January after losing at home to Burnley. We signed Bruno, had a great run towards the end of the season and finished 3rd. Something similar needs to happen, but with a defensive midfielder if we’re to save this season.”

Zakaria has been impressive in his position for Gladbach, scoring two goals and bagging one assist for the Bundesliga side so far this season, with a 50% successful tackle rate. Meanwhile, he has completed 702 of his 777 passes successfully during his 14 appearances according to infogol.

All hope is not lost though, as Romano did hint in the aforementioned post that Rangnick has shown interest in the player and is “appreciated” by the German coach. Thus, it will likely not be the last time we see a connection made between the Switzerland international and the Manchester club, however, another club could swoop for the popular defensive midfielder if progress isn’t made soon.

The freshly appointed manager has a lot of work to do to get Manchester United into shape, but with an FA Cup win against Aston Villa on Monday evening, it will have given the fans a much needed boost after a disappointing performance in their last Premier League game against Wolves, when they lost at Old Trafford last week.

Matt Doherty expected to leave Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur right-back Matt Doherty is expected to leave north London in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to Fabrizio Romano, with the journalist revealing on a recent episode of the Here We Go podcast that Spurs boss Antonio Conte is looking to move a number of first-team players on in the upcoming winter market, and that the 29-year-old defender is one of them.

Speaking about the potential exit of the Republic of Ireland international next month, Romano said: “Doherty has a serious chance to leave in January. Tottenham are also thinking about the outgoings. Doherty is going to leave.”

Fans will be buzzing

Considering how poor Doherty has generally been for Tottenham since his £15m move to North London back in the summer of 2020, the news that Spurs are looking to move the right-back on this winter is sure to have left many of the club’s fanbase buzzing.

Indeed, over his 17 Premier League appearances last season – only 13 of which came as starts – the £10.8m-rated defender helped his side keep a mere three clean sheets, as well as being beaten by an opponent an average of 1.2 times and losing possession of the ball a whopping 13.3 times per game.

These returns saw the £74k-per-week man earn an extremely disappointing seasonal SofaScore match rating of just 6.76, ranking him as Spurs’ 11th-worst performer in the top flight of English football last time out.

Things have not improved for the right-back over his four league outings this season, with the former Wolverhampton Wanderers defender averaging a SofaScore match rating of 6.72 – ranking him as Antonio Conte’s eighth-worst player in the division so far.

As such, it will perhaps come as no surprise to many Tottenham fans that, in a recent poll ran on Football FanCast, the overwhelming majority of Spurs supporters voted in favour of their club moving the 29-year-old onto pastures new this winter.

As a result, Romano’s latest update will undoubtedly come as music to the ears of many involved with the club, and we would have to agree that Doherty’s rather hefty weekly wage could easily be put to much better use by Fabio Paratici and Conte in the January transfer window.

Cheruvathur puts Kerala in driver's seat

Group B

ScorecardKerala took the upper hand against Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) after a superb bowling display from right-arm seamer Sony Cheruvathur at the Gandhi Memorial Science College in Jammu. Cheruvathur and fellow fast bowler Raiphi Gomez rattled the J&K batsmen, sharing nine wickets between them. Cheruvathur finished the day with a haul of six, as none of the home team batsmen could better Ian Dev Singh’s 35 at the top. Kerala faltered as well, during the reply, after Abid Nabi had them floundering at 27 for 3 in the ninth over. But Sreekumar Nair and Sachin Baby fought back with an unbeaten partnership of 32.
Scorecard
Rain in Vijaywada curtailed the first day’s play between Madhya Pradesh and Andhra to only 30 overs, at the end of which the visitors had reached 63 for 2. Play started on time and MP’s openers, Naman Ojha and Jalaj Saxena, added 45 before Ojha was dismissed for 21 by Syed Sahabuddin. Saxena fell soon after, edging Sahabuddin to the wicketkeeper, with the score on 56. Hrishikesh Kanitkar and Devendra Bundela scored four each before play was washed out.

Scorecard
Jharkhand crawled in their first innings, after choosing to bat against Assam, reaching only 160 for 4 in 82 overs on the first day in Guwahati. Opener Siddhartha Sinha top scored with 89, but he played 252 deliveries and spent five hours at the crease to get there. His stodgy resistance came after Jharkhand had lost two early wickets and were 21 for 2 within the first ten overs. Sinha and his captain Saurabh Tiwary, who scored 35 off 98 balls, added 80 for the third wicket and Sinha added another 56 with Rajiv Kumar. Kumar was the slowest of them all, taking 126 balls to plod to 21 but he remained unbeaten at stumps. Sairaj Bahutule picked up 2 for 34 off 15 overs, an expensive economy-rate compared to Arlen Konwar’s 1.07 (30 runs in 28 overs).
Scorecard
Swapnil Asnodkar shone for Goa with a well-compiled half-century against Rajasthan in Margao. The hosts started on the wrong foot though, after being put in, losing Sagun Kamat off the second ball of the day. Even as wickets fell regularly, Asnodkar braved all odds to grind out his fifty, hitting nine fours and a six en route. The unbeaten stand of 43 with Rahul Keni (26 not out) bode well for the hosts, even as 51 overs could be managed in the day.
Scorecard
There was no play on the first day between Vidarbha and Tripura in Nagpur because of rain. The weather was so bad that even the toss could not take place. Umpires S Ramakrishna and R Subramanian, after the third and final inspection at around 3.30 pm, called off play for the day.

Smith unfazed by long Test hiatus

The South Africans will have to remind themselves what game they are playing on Wednesday. White clothes, red balls and attacking fields … that would be Test cricket, then

Andrew McGlashan at Centurion15-Dec-2009The South Africans will have to remind themselves what game they are playing on Wednesday. White clothes, red balls and attacking fields … that would be Test cricket, then. It is nine months since they beat Australia, at Cape Town, in their most recent five-day contest. Since then they have lived on a diet of one-day and Twenty20 action.Five of South Africa’s squad, including the captain Graeme Smith, haven’t even played first-class cricket since March, and the team as a whole prepared with a training camp in Potchefstroom rather than turning out for their franchises in a round of Supersport four-day matches. Despite the concerns about coming into the series short of meaningful practice, the coach Mickey Arthur felt the greater importance was to get his Test squad back together after such a long time apart, and for his part, Smith doesn’t believe the team will be caught cold.”I wouldn’t say under-cooked is the right word,” he said. “We’ve played enough cricket, had enough training and enough match time. It is more the long haul of a Test match, being able to handle pressure for long periods and sustain performances for long periods. I know it’s been a lengthy period since our last Test match, but our squad is a very mature one. It’s had a lot of success, and each guy knows what he needs to do to be successful. We’ve prepared really well – and it’s been a good, calm focus with intensity around our training sessions.”It’s always difficult to say where you are if you haven’t played a Test match for a long time. But I think we’re ready for tomorrow. It’s up to us to come out and make that first day count.”A situation that Smith will definitely have to confront is not having his usual five-man bowling attack. Although Jacques Kallis has been passed fit for batting duties after his fractured rib, he won’t be available with the ball which puts an added burden on the frontline bowlers, including Dale Steyn who has had recent hamstring trouble.”It’s obviously a luxury to have the five bowlers available,” said Smith. “I hope the four picked can do the job well and take the pressure off me. We have some quality bowlers who can produce the results, but we’re not going to have the luxury of Jacques [with the ball] so the responsibility shifts to all other places. Players know they’re going to have to take on a little bit more.”One bowler Smith knows will run in all day for him whatever the conditions is Makhaya Ntini, who will be celebrating his 100th cap. “It’s been a pleasure to be a part of his career and see the success he’s had – where he’s come from to where he is today,” Smith said. “He’s had his ups and downs but has always met them with 100% commitment. He’s a vibrant personality, even to the point sometimes where we have to put a muzzle on him. We wish him all the success in the next game and a lot more to come. He’s going to play a prominent role in the future, not only in this team but in South Africa.”Being greeted by a green pitch on the eve of the game may have given Smith cause to considering bolstering the pace attack in Kallis’s absence, but he said there was “a 99% chance” they would play the left-arm spinner Paul Harris. “That’s the way we’ve played our Test cricket over the last period of time, and I think we’ll stick to it,” he added. “The weather’s going to be a lot better tomorrow, and there’s still a lot of work to be done on the wicket this afternoon. I think it will change quite a bit, so we’ll assess it in the morning.”Smith is a far more mature captain than the one England first faced in 2003 when his attitude didn’t endear him to many of his opponents. Back in his younger days he would go down the route of making strong and provocative statements, but the older, wiser version instead opts for more subtle views about his rivals.”They’ve got a few challenges like the loss of an allrounder,” he said referring to Andrew Flintoff’s absence, and he has also suggested that England’s attack doesn’t look overly threatening with Steve Harmison left back home in Ashington.”And it wouldn’t be the build-up to a South Africa-England contest without mention of Kevin Pietersen. “We’d like to make it a major test for him,” Smith said. “That is our challenge as a team. We want to put all England batters under pressure, and he’s a key figure in that line-up. We’ve worked on a few interesting gameplans to him. Since his injury, he’s searching for a bit of confidence – and we hope we can keep him under that pressure he’s had on the tour so far.”

Antonio’s West Ham struggles continue

West Ham United were dealt a frustrating setback in their quest to qualify for the Champions League this season after they were held by relegation-battling Burnley at Turf Moor.

And it was yet another game in which Michail Antonio struggled in the final third.

The Clarets, who have won just once all season, largely matched the fourth-placed Irons and were resolute enough to not hand them many chances. That said, the 31-year-old put in another lacklustre display and that would’ve undoubtedly contributed to their futile attempts up top.

Across the 90 minutes he had on the pitch, Antonio failed to register a single shot on target, with both his efforts going wide. Even central defenders Issa Diop and James Tarkowski managed to hit the target.

His lack of influence for the visiting east Londoners was reflected by the fact that he recorded the fewest touches of any Hammers starter (34). One less than even goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski (35), as well as managing only ten accurate passes all game, too.

Elsewhere, the Jamaican international struggled to combat the physical threat on offer from the home side, losing possession a whopping 16 times, almost once every other touch of the ball, whilst he also won just 46% of his 15 battles, both on the ground and in the air, only further highlighting the way in which he was dominated by Sean Dyche’s towering backline.

‘Another Hammer who had a quiet game with the striker’s poor touch on a couple of occasions costing him the chance of a sight of goal,’ was how football.london reporter Tom Clark described Antonio’s performance after the match.

Indeed, that was the case and it has been that way for several games now. The former Nottingham Forest ace has scored just once in ten games and has now failed to surpass a 6.9 WhoScored rating in five of his last six matches.

His form has to be a major cause for concern to manager David Moyes and the club. He will certainly feel badly let down by his star man once again because if Antonio isn’t firing, West Ham often aren’t either.

The £70k-per-week forward must do better in the coming weeks, especially as he’s the only option in the role. He must do better.

It will be tough to bat last – Waller

Malcolm Waller is hopeful Zimbabwe’s tail can wag with the vigour Pakistan’s did if the home team are avoid batting in conditions which may be too difficult to chase a target

Malcolm Waller hopes the tail will stretch Zimbabwe’s lead on the third morning•Associated Press

Malcolm Waller is hopeful Zimbabwe’s tail can wag with the vigour Pakistan’s did if the home team wants to avoid batting in conditions which may be too difficult to chase a target. Although Hamilton Masakadza believed the pitch would not deteriorate too much on the final day of the match when he won the toss and chose to bowl, Waller indicated some of the cracks could cause problems for Zimbabwe when they bat again.”I think the fourth innings will be very different,” Waller said. “There are few footmarks for the left-handers and there are some cracks. Even though they are not opening up much, they might do later on. When we come to bat again, it will be different and we will see a bit more turn.”Zimbabwe have a slim first-innings lead of 32 but with three wickets in hand, will draw inspiration from their opposition’s ninth-wicket stand of 67. With that aim, they will also look to deny Pakistan what Waller considers the best of the batting conditions on the middle day of the match. “Tomorrow will be really good for batting,” he said. “It might do a bit in the morning but if we can see that off and bat for as long as possible that will be good for us.”Being down to their last batting pair of sorts means a large amount of the run-scoring responsibility will fall on Elton Chigumbura and Shingi Masakadza, who turned 27 today and said he plans to the spend the evening “quietly”. Against a Pakistan attack with a ball just seven overs old, Waller said the line-up knows exactly what they are up against. “Make no mistake, their whole attack is very good. We know we are up for a fight against these guys,” he said. ”But we’ve gone in there really positive and we’ll do that again.”Waller said the new coach, his father, had helped the batsmen adapt their techniques to batting longer, which was what they failed to do in previous Tests. “He’s done a lot of work with us,” he said. “He communicates very well and it seems to be working. We are following game plans better.”Saeed Ajmal agreed that Zimbabwe displayed more staying power than he has known them to but attributed some of it to the placid pitch. “They played very well but the wicket is a flat-batting track. There is no turn,” he said. “Only when the ball is older, like maybe 60 overs, it is turning a little. But it’s not sharp turn, it’s slow turn.”With little to assist him, Ajmal confessed he was “not happy” with his figures because “I have to take a few more wickets”. But for now, he is content to leave it to the likes of Rahat Ali to do the damage and in the process cement a place in the team. “He is a youngster and he is learning. In the future, he will be very good for Pakistan,” he said.
