Spurs will forever regret Madueke exit

Tottenham Hotspur will surely be reeling from their decision to let Noni Madueke leave for nothing in 2018.

No one could’ve predicted his rise but the 19-year-old sensation has now emerged as one of Europe’s brightest prospects outside of the five major leagues.

The electrifying winger made his debut for the Lilywhites’ U18 squad aged just 15, highlighting just how far ahead of his peers he was, but Spurs were never able to keep hold of him.

Following in the footsteps of Jadon Sancho, the young Englishman opted to swap England for the Netherlands, rejecting Manchester United to join 24-time champions PSV Eindhoven in a free transfer.

One that got away?

After a breakthrough campaign in 2020/21, where he scored nine times and laid on eight assists, Madueke is enjoying another exemplary season for the Dutch giants.

A muscle injury has curtailed his progress somewhat but that hasn’t stopped him from making his mark whenever he has featured – as per Transfermarkt, the former Tottenham gem has delivered ten direct contributions across 20 appearances, managing a goal or assist once every 112.9 minutes.

It’s 27 goals and assists from only 56 senior appearances, which is remarkable, even for the Dutch top-flight.

“He’s fast and has the capability to trick his opponent. He brings creativity and is very explosive in his actions. That’s what PSV needs,” once claimed former PSV midfielder Tommie van de Leegte.

Whilst it is the influence of former Red Devils forward Ruud van Nistelrooy that has seemingly taken Madueke’s game to the next level.

‘PSV academy coach Van Nistelrooy was behind Madueke’s conversion from a No.10, believing his one v one dribbling ability and speed would make him better suited to a wide role,’ revealed the Daily Mail last year.

As a result of his impressive performances for the Dutch outfit, the teenager has seen his value soar. When he arrived at the Philips Stadion, he was worth only £540k but the England U21 international is now valued at a whopping £16.2m by Transfermarkt – a whopping 2,233% increase.

That’ll have chairman Daniel Levy fuming, at least, as he’s either missed out on a future star or the prospect of cashing in for hefty profit in the future. Either way, he made a massive mistake in letting the young talent leave so soon.

Newcastle: Ryder’s Lingard update

Newcastle United ‘aren’t giving up’ hope of signing Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard, The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder writes, revealing Eddie Howe is a huge admirer.

The lowdown

Newcastle’s efforts to sign Lingard during the January transfer window continued until Deadline Day.

They offered to pay a fee to take him on loan in addition to covering the entirety of the player’s £75,000-per-week salary.

But Manchester United’s board blocked the move, even after interim manager Ralf Rangnick had given Lingard permission to leave, and that left the player ‘extremely disappointed’.

But The Red Devils may be powerless to stop him leaving at the end of the season, when his contract is due to expire.

The latest

Ryder sets out ‘Howe’s stance’ on Twitter and in his article for The Chronicle, as the manager said: “Jesse Lingard is a player I have always admired.”

He says Howe has indicated that Newcastle ‘will be in the hunt’ once again come the summer.

If the Magpies survive and Lingard decides to run down his contract, ‘he could be an intriguing free transfer’.

The verdict

Lingard on a free would be a superb bit of business. He showed on loan at West Ham last season, where he scored nine goals and provided five assists in 16 appearances, that he can be explosive in the right environment. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer even called him ‘brilliant’ after that temporary stint.

What’s more, in Transfermarkt’s estimation, he’s an £18million player, so to get him for nothing would be an incredible coup.

The problem for Newcastle, of course, is that they may not be the only club in the running.

Indeed, as recently as last Sunday, sports journalist Pete O’Rourke told Give Me Sport that the Hammers would ‘definitely’ be in the mix for the signing.

If, as you’d expect, Lingard looks back fondly on his time in London, they may have a key advantage.

Newcastle must unleash Michael Ndiweni

Newcastle have struggled throughout this season in the Premier League and are currently 17th in the table as it stands.

The Magpies are one point ahead of 18th-placed Norwich and have the second-worst defensive record in the division, with 44 goals conceded in 22 games.

However, they have also struggled to find consistent goalscorers. They have netted 24 goals in 22 games and are now set to be without their top scorer Callum Wilson for the majority of the campaign.

The ex-Bournemouth forward has been tipped to return for the last few matches of the season and has scored six Premier League goals this term, with 18 since the start of the 2020/21 campaign. This shows how important he has been to the team and why his absence is a major blow for Howe’s squad heading into the next few months.

Forget Wilson

It is time to forget about Wilson for now though, as he will not be back for a little while yet, and start focusing on potential solutions at the top end of the pitch. How can Newcastle replace his goals?

January signing Chris Wood has scored three league goals in 20 appearances for Burnley and the Magpies combined this season and does not appear to offer the same goalscoring threat as his teammate. This means that it could be the right time to dip into the academy structure to find a new first-team hero.

One young player who has been making waves at youth level is teenage centre-forward Michael Ndiweni. The Chronicle recently reported that he has been called up to training with the senior squad after impressing Howe, which suggests that he could have the potential to make the step up.

In the academy this season, Ndiweni has scored an outstanding 12 goals in 13 matches. This means that he has found the back of the net every 1.08 matches this term, including eight goals in 10 Under-18 Premier League games. He even managed to score in his one EFL Trophy outing, despite being on the pitch for just 17 minutes, which further highlights his goalscoring instincts.

Whilst there is no guarantee that the 18-year-old will be able to translate this form into senior level, it does show that he is a young player with potential who knows how to score goals. With Newcastle currently lacking in that department, the timing could be right for Howe to unleash him in the Premier League to solve his Callum Wilson problem in the coming weeks and months.

The teenage dynamo could be hungry to grasp a first-team debut with both hands, and his hunger to impress could be a useful quality to have in a relegation fight as every player needs to give 100% to the cause to pick up points. Howe must now make the call and give Ndiweni an opportunity, whether that comes off the bench or from the start, as he can be the solution to the Magpies’ attacking woes.

Vinicius Silvestre (Ponte Preta)

Modi wants independent panel to hear his case

Lalit Modi has asked Shashank Manohar and N Srinivasan to remove themselves from all proceedings involving the show cause notice issued to him and to instead constitute an independent panel to adjudicate on the issue

Lalit Modi, the suspended chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL), has asked the BCCI president, Shashank Manohar, and secretary N Srinivasan to remove themselves from all proceedings involving the show cause notice issued to him and to instead constitute an independent panel to adjudicate on the issue. This was communicated in an email – a copy of which is with Cricinfo – sent on Tuesday by Modi to the league’s governing council, which also contained a series of allegations over several decisions regarding the IPL.The mail is effectively Modi’s counter to the chargesheet served on him by the BCCI on April 26 – Modi’s official reply, which ran into 160 pages and 15,000 pages of supporting evidence, has not yet been made public. While part of the mail deals with issues mentioned in the chargesheet – including the ownership of the Rajasthan Royals franchise – the bulk of it comprises the alleged involvement of Manohar in the franchise auction process last March and of Srinivasan in the 2010 player auction. It is this involvement, Modi contends, that warranted the absence of both officials from the process that would investigate the charges against him.Manohar, Modi alleges, was responsible for the controversial decision to scrap the initial opening of tenders for the franchises and went out of his way to entertain former minister of state for external affairs Shashi Tharoor and accept the Kochi bid much after the lapse of deadline. He denies the allegation that he tried rigging the bids in favour of two business houses for the two new teams added for the fourth edition of the IPL; instead he claims the bids were processed and vetted by the board’s corporate lawyers and counsel Akhila Kaushik, appointed on Manohar’s recommendation. He claims Manohar was party to the decision fixing the net worth of the bidder at $1 billion and that he discussed the issue of deposit also with him at the Governing Council meeting on March 7 and got his approval. He also alleged it was Manohar who pitched in for Tharoor to include the bid of Rendezvous after the deadline had lapsed. “You wanted me to wait till the Kochi bid came from Delhi,” Modi writes, adding that Manohar spoke to Tharoor and his secretary several times after he refused to entertain the minister’s request for extension of deadline.Modi has brought up the issue of the controversial IPL TV contract with Sony and MSM, claiming that Manohar was aware of the termination last year of the contract with Sony and the subsequent litigation and eventual settlement. The litigation process was, he claims, supervised by Akhila Kaushik, “who reports directly to you”.Srinivasan, Modi alleged, had been “instrumental in sponsoring complaints” against him and his participation would be “tantamount to him being a judge in his own cause”. Modi also said he wanted to cross-examine Srinivasan in the inquiry.Among the charges levied, Modi said he had “sufficient cause to apprehend bias” on Srinivasan’s part and that he had “consistently frustrated and exposed his attempts at misusing his position as Honorary Secretary of the Board, so as to confer a wrongful benefit to his team at the cost and expense of other teams and the BCCI.”Modi alleged that Srinivasan had tried to “alter or propose panel of umpires” officiating in the IPL matches and had circulated an email “directing a panel of umpires handpicked by him”. He claimed Srinivasan had attempted to ensure umpires from Chennai or Tamil Nadu stood in his team’s matches.Another charge Modi made against Srinivasan was that he had “consistently pushed tailor-made policies” intended to benefit the Chennai franchise. In support of this charge, Modi cited the proposal of franchises retaining seven players (four Indian, three foreign) for the 2011 season and beyond. Modi’s reply to the show cause says Srinivasan tried to get franchises to agree to the proposal and that the “only reason for doing so was to ensure that Chennai Super King retained its players.”Modi also alleged that Srinivasan had tried to ensure Kieron Pollard, who was bought by Mumbai Indians during a silent tiebreaker in the 2010 auction, could not play “by raising some frivolous issues with the West Indian Cricket Board.” Modi termed Srinivasan’s action a “brazen act of abuse of power”.He claimed Srinivasan had used his power to “alter the auction rules” so that Chennai’s purse would be $2 million as opposed to the $1.85 million that was mentioned prior to the auction. “Despite my opposition he used his clout as secretary to pressure the management to accept back-dated player contracts and cancel the contracts of one of his players so that he could have his full purse and thereby have an advantage in the bidding process vis-a-vis other teams.”Regarding the issue of Srinivasan’s alleged conflict of interest, raised by former BCCI president AC Muttiah, Modi said “false statements have been made in pleadings filed in Court” to protect the position of Srinivasan.”In the proceedings filed by Mr. Muttiah, it has been stated by the Honorary Secretary on oath that the Regulation 6.2.4 was amended after an action taken report was filed by the two-member committee consisting of Mr. Shashank Manohar and Mr. Niranjan Shah recommending amendment,” Modi said. “I state that no such committee was ever appointed, no recommendation was ever made, no special general body meeting approving such report and such amendment ever took place and hence Mr. Shashank Manohar, Mr. Niranjan Shah – the Vice Chairman – IPL and Mr. N Srinavasan have connived and played not only on the members of the Board but also on the Court.”

Middlesex slump to fourth straight defeat

Gloucestershire needed only 34 balls and 25 minutes to claim the last three Middlesex wickets and complete an 103-run victory in their County Championship Division Two encounter at a near deserted Lord’s

Gloucestershire needed only 34 balls and 25 minutes to claim the last three Middlesex wickets and complete an 103-run victory in their County Championship Division Two encounter at a near deserted Lord’s.Middlesex have now lost their first four championship games, their worst start to the season since the competition proper was instituted in 1870. It is also their worst sequence in the four-day format since they finished the 1998 campaign with five straight defeats. They were only saved from probable defeat inside three days by bad light during the final session on Thursday, but their position was all but hopeless when play began yesterday. Needing another 123 runs, Middlesex’s ultra-slim hope of victory lay with their eighth-wicket pair of captain Shaun Udal and Tim Murtagh launching an all-out assault. They successfully negotiated the opening over from Gemaal Hussain and the first attacking shot of note came when Udal pulled Steve Kirby’ s first ball of the day through midwicket for four.Hussain struck with the fifth ball of his next over, although he did not have to work very hard for his fifth wicket of the innings. Left-hander Murtagh chipped tamely to substitute fielder Anthony Ireland at mid-off.In the next over New Zealander Iain O’Brien perished. He guided Kirby tentatively through the covers for two, but was sharply caught, low down at second slip by Stephen Snell, off the following ball.Ireland claimed another assist two overs later when Kirby dug a delivery in to Middlesex’s last man, Danny Evans, and the ball looped gently to short leg. Evans was far from convinced he was out, but Middlesex’s situation was so futile it barely mattered.Kirby finished with 3 for 36 and Hussain 5 for 46, making him, if only briefly, the leading wicket-taker in the country. Gloucestershire were relieved to get off the mark after two home defeats, while Middlesex face the daunting prospect of going to Hove for their next championship match – Sussex have won their first four matches.
