Journalist Tom Barclay has made a claim on Crystal Palace left-back Tyrick Mitchell, as per GiveMeSport.

The Lowdown: Mitchell injured v Leicester

The defender has been a regular during Patrick Vieira’s first season in charge at Selhurst Park, starting every Premier League game so far in 2021/22.

Unfortunately, the 22-year-old was forced off through injury in the 2-1 defeat at Leicester on Sunday, with his availability for this weekend’s FA Cup semi-final clash with Chelsea now seemingly up in the air.

He was due to undergo scans on a calf problem on Monday, and Barclay has made a claim unrelated to the injury on the full-back.

The Latest: Barclay’s comments on Mitchell

Barclay was talking to GiveMeSport regarding Mitchell after what he has heard from the Palace ‘dressing room’.

The reporter claimed that the full-back is ‘really good’ with the Eagles youngsters and wants to help them both on and off the training pitch, outlining:

“He’s really good with the other youngsters, which is funny because he’s only 22.

“But the younger players like him, he spends a lot of time with them, having food and doing warm-ups. He knows the path he’s been on, and wants to help others and he is well-liked in the dressing room is what I’m told.”

The Verdict: Mitchell to stay?

Mitchell has been linked with Chelsea, Manchester City, Newcastle and Tottenham in recent weeks, but it appears as if he is loving life at Selhurst Park.

He seems to be passionate about helping the Eagles’ academy prospects as they look to follow in his footsteps, so hopefully he will remain a Palace player beyond the summer.

Mitchell is also the only senior left-back on the books for Vieira at this moment in time, so losing his services would be a big blow to Palace, particularly given his fine performances in recent months.

The BCCI’s disciplinary committee that is considering the case against suspended IPL chairman Lalit Modi has adjourned its proceedings to September 26, after today’s hearing could not be completed in time.The BCCI has produced four witnesses on its behalf: IPL chief executive Sundar Raman, and three members of IMG, Peter Griffiths, John Loffhagen, and Paul Manning. One of Modi’s lawyers requested more time to cross examine Griffiths, the BCCI said in a statement.The hearings were originally scheduled to begin on September 13h, but were postponed for two days because Modi appealed to the Bombay High Court to remove board vice president Arun Jaitley and interim IPL chairman Chirayu Amin from the committee, saying they were biased against him. The High Court dismissed Modi’s petition earlier today. It is the second time Modi has petitioned the court to intervene in the BCCI’s proceedings against him, both times unsuccessfully.The next hearing will be held at 3.00 pm at the Taj Palace Hotel in New Delhi, with two more on September 27 and 28, as originally scheduled. If necessary, an additional session will be held on September 29 at 4.00 pm in Mumbai.”It is made clear that the recording of the cross-examination of Mr Peter Griffiths, Mr John Loffhagen, Mr Paul Manning and Mr Sundar Raman would be endeavoured to be concluded during this time,” the board said.

Cricket Australia will not finalise its next candidate for the ICC vice-presidency until August after its board decided only to review the events that led to John Howard’s rejection last week. Australia and New Zealand must make another joint nomination for the role, which includes two years as the global organisation’s president from 2012, and there will not be a swift conclusion to this complicated episode.Jack Clarke, Cricket Australia’s chairman, led the teleconference from London on Friday and briefed his board on the way Howard’s appointment was blocked at the ICC’s annual conference in Singapore. Howard has not withdrawn from the race but will stand by Cricket Australia’s decision if it does not retain him.No names were discussed as possible new candidates and the board will not be asked to consider a nomination until its next meeting on August 13. “Jack gave a highly detailed debrief to the directors and one of the key things he stressed was that Australia and New Zealand were joined at the hip throughout this process,” a Cricket Australia spokesman told Cricinfo. “They want to remain that way as they move forward.”New Zealand Cricket’s board will discuss the situation on July 23 before further talks take place between its chairman Alan Isaac and Clarke. Newcastle United ‘aren’t giving up’ hope of signing Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard, The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder writes, revealing Eddie Howe is a huge admirer.

The lowdown

Newcastle’s efforts to sign Lingard during the January transfer window continued until Deadline Day.

They offered to pay a fee to take him on loan in addition to covering the entirety of the player’s £75,000-per-week salary.

But Manchester United’s board blocked the move, even after interim manager Ralf Rangnick had given Lingard permission to leave, and that left the player ‘extremely disappointed’.

But The Red Devils may be powerless to stop him leaving at the end of the season, when his contract is due to expire.

The latest

Ryder sets out ‘Howe’s stance’ on Twitter and in his article for The Chronicle, as the manager said: “Jesse Lingard is a player I have always admired.”

He says Howe has indicated that Newcastle ‘will be in the hunt’ once again come the summer.

If the Magpies survive and Lingard decides to run down his contract, ‘he could be an intriguing free transfer’.

The verdict

Lingard on a free would be a superb bit of business. He showed on loan at West Ham last season, where he scored nine goals and provided five assists in 16 appearances, that he can be explosive in the right environment. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer even called him ‘brilliant’ after that temporary stint.

What’s more, in Transfermarkt’s estimation, he’s an £18million player, so to get him for nothing would be an incredible coup.

The problem for Newcastle, of course, is that they may not be the only club in the running.

Indeed, as recently as last Sunday, sports journalist Pete O’Rourke told Give Me Sport that the Hammers would ‘definitely’ be in the mix for the signing.

If, as you’d expect, Lingard looks back fondly on his time in London, they may have a key advantage.
