We need to bat Mumbai out of the game – Kanitkar

If it was any other team Rajasthan would be deliriously happy but since it is Mumbai, who have won the Ranji Trophy 39 times, they are cautiously optimistic

They called him a (eunuch), sledged him and tried to bowl a tight line but Mumbai couldn’t remove Vineet Saxena today. Saxena, who was unbeaten on 111, later said his mistakes in previous close battles against Mumbai egged him on during the second day of the Ranji Trophy quarter-final in Jaipur. Hrishikesh Kanitkar, the Rajasthan captain, batting on 96, stressed the game wasn’t over yet and that Rajasthan needed to bat Mumbai out of the game on the third day.”We came close to beating them in 2003 and 2007 but we failed,” Saxena said. “In 2003, we needed 12 runs, with three wickets intact, to take the vital first-innings lead but we collapsed (Rajasthan were 230 for 7 but were bowled out for 230). In 2007, chasing 384 to win, we needed around 135 runs from about 35 overs, with seven wickets in hand, but we lost by two runs. I had hit a hundred then but had played a loose shot to get out. I was determined not to repeat that mistake today. I will give my best to stretch my innings as long as possible tomorrow.”Saxena and Kanitkar added 206 runs in 84 overs to grind out Mumbai. “We just told each other that we shall not throw our wickets,” Saxena said. “We just wanted to keep out the good deliveries and wait for the bad balls. Patience was our key today.” There was a lot of chirping from the Mumbai fielders but they couldn’t break Saxena’s focus. “One player called me too,” Saxena said with a chuckle. “I was doubly determined and just focussed on the job on the hand.”Aakash Chopra, who was out for 19 to a dubious lbw decision, put Saxena’s effort in the right context. “It’s one thing when professionals like Kanitkar or I score but for someone like Saxena to score a hundred in a pressure quarter-final against Mumbai, it means a lot to him, to his team and the local cricketers. The innings was of great importance. Saxena is not someone who is a strokemaker; his forte is patience and he is someone who is well aware of his own game. He gritted it out there brilliantly.”Chopra said the first session was the most crucial phase of play. “Mumbai bowled well in that session and kept it really tight. Only 60 runs came but it was fascinating to watch how Saxena and Kanitkar applied themselves.”Kanitkar didn’t want his team-mates to get complacent. “You can’t get take anything for granted right now. There are still two days to go. We have to ensure that we keep batting and don’t allow Mumbai the time to get back into the game.” Most domestic teams are wary of Mumbai’s reputation to script jailbreaks and Rajasthan, too, were understandably cautious.

Melbourne hangover sorted out – Swann

Graeme Swann insists there will be no hangover from England’s Ashes-retaining heroics in Melbourne as they eye a first series win in Australia in 24 years

Graeme Swann insists there will be no hangover from England’s Ashes-retaining heroics in Melbourne as they eye a first series win in Australia in 24 years. The tourists partied hard after holding on to the trophy at the MCG but Swann, who details some of the exploits in his latest video diary, said everyone had re-focused on finishing the Test campaign on a high.”It’s been sorted out already,” Swann said after training at the SCG. “We haven’t had celebrations going on for many days. We had one night out after the game, you should celebrate a Test victory and an Ashes-retaining victory heavily. I tried to a lead a merry dance, but that was one night and we’ve moved on.”England will face an unfamiliar Australian line-up after the captain Ricky Ponting was ruled out with a broken finger. That has provided Michael Clarke with his first game in charge and Usman Khawaja, the No.3, and Michael Beer, the spinner, are both expected to debut. It should mean that England have a huge advantage with all their experience, but Swann remains wary of so many news faces.”On one hand there is a whole pile of pressure on them because it is a New Year’s Test match and they will be shaking like big dogs, but on the other hand coming in for your first game can be the best time you ever play because you don’t know what it is all about,” he said. “You’ve not got the pressure on your back … You have to hope it goes the first way as you don’t want two people on debut and one getting a five-for and the other a hundred.”Swann has 13 wickets for the series and has been satisfied with his contributions in the wins in Adelaide and Melbourne, but he starts this Test with different expectations on him. This pitch is traditionally a slow bowler’s surface and England will look to him to provide significant damage.”You always look forward to bowling on pitches renowned for spin, but that can bring pressure as well if people expect it to turn square like Sydney did 15 years ago,” he said. “I’m reliably informed by people in Australia that it doesn’t turn like it used to, but it will offer some assistance later on in the game.”Swann’s 64 Test wickets were the most in 2010 and he has been a key man in a series of England successes. “It’s been pretty much a dream year,” he said. “I got married in January, won the Twenty20World Cup [in May], retained the Ashes in December. If 2011 can be anything like that, I will be over the moon. It’s been a dream period for me.”We’ve played some very good cricket and there are not many England players who can say they have played in two Ashes, won one, retained the other and won a [Twenty20] World Cup. I’m pretty chuffed the way the last 12 months have gone.”Swann is not sitting back enjoying the view because there is still work to be done to ensure this side is the first since Mike Gatting’s in 1986-87 to win the Ashes in Australia. “In South Africa last year I thought I’d draw a line under the end of the year and we got absolutely hammered at the Wanderers,” he said. “I’m going to draw a line under this series after the series and hopefully we can win 3-1.”

Modi wants clarity from passport office

Lalit Modi, the former IPL chairman, has sought clarity on several points from the regional passport office in Mumbai over the notice issued by it earlier this month, including the deadline and the basis for the notice

Lalit Modi has said through his lawyer that he is not absconding•AFP

Lalit Modi, the former IPL chairman, has sought clarity on several points from the regional passport office in Mumbai over the notice issued by it earlier this month, including the deadline and the basis for the notice. He has also said through his lawyer that, though travelling abroad, he was not absconding. The notice was sent after the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which looks into foreign exchange violations, wrote to India’s external (foreign) affairs ministry on October 5 asking it to revoke Modi’s passport since he had not appeared before the ED to answer allegations of financial irregularities.Modi’s counsel Mehmood Abdi said that, before filing his reply, Modi needed to know the ED’s reference to the RPO, following which the notice was issued, and the documents on which the RPO based its notice.Modi has 15 days to reply to the notice and, though it was issued on October 15, Abdi said this period should start from the date of receipt of the notice, which was October 20. “According to us, the deadline expires on November 4. We sent the RPO a letter on October 26 seeking clarification but there has been no reply.” Abdi said he had also sent a reminder to RPO today but has not received a response.Modi has been living abroad for the past few months and said he fears for his life. “There is a threat to his life and he will not return till the situation changes,” Abdi said. He denied that Modi was absconding and said he was communicating with the ED and other authorities from London. Two days ago Abdi had said that his client was ready for interrogation by the ED in London and would bear the expenses of ED personnel travelling there to question him.The ED is examining whether Modi violated the Foreign Exchange Management Act during his time as IPL commissioner. Earlier this month, the directorate issued a blue corner alert for Modi, which makes it mandatory for law-enforcement agencies around the world to detain him wherever they spot him and inform the ED accordingly.

Leeds: O’Rourke makes Kalvin Phillips claim

Football journalist Pete O’Rourke has provided an update regarding the future of Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

The lowdown: Major interest in Phillips

The 26-year-old has been at the centre of intense transfer speculation for some time now, and the upcoming summer transfer window appears to be an important one for his future.

Premier League rivals Manchester United have recently emerged as the leading suitors, seemingly eclipsing previous interest from West Ham United and Aston Villa.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-updates-2/” title=”Latest Leeds United updates!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

However, relegation-threatened Leeds could be bracing themselves for a battle to keep the highly-rated midfielder regardless of their top-flight status…

The latest: O’Rourke predicts ‘big race’ for Phillips

Speaking to GiveMeSport, O’Rourke claimed that the 19-cap England international will be a wanted man should he decide to move on from Elland Road.

The journalist said: “If Kalvin Phillips does decide to leave Leeds this summer, there’s going to be a big race for his signature.

“I’m sure Leeds would love to keep hold of him as well.”

The verdict: At all costs

Unfortunately, without top-flight football, it seems certain that Phillips would leave Elland Road at the end of the season, despite the local hero’s strong affiliation with the club.

The combative midfielder has endured an injury-hit 2021/22 campaign, making just 19 appearances across all competitions. However, now that he’s back to fitness for the crucial run-in, Jesse Marsch may well turn to the £50m-rated Englishman to inspire the Yorkshire club to safety.

Having already amassed 230 appearances for his boyhood club, any move away will have to meet the club’s demands and will likely come with a heavy heart. Meanwhile, a switch to arch-rivals Manchester United could already be off the table out of respect to the Whites’ faithful, which would at least soften the blow if Phillips does move on in the summer.

Rain forces stalemate in first round of matches

A round-up of the first round of games from the Bangladesh National Cricket League

Rabeed Imam09-Oct-2010

Mohammad Ashraful was at his best against Khulna•Associated Press

Considering the odds the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had to overcome to get the 12th version of the National Cricket League going, the first week of the tournament was a classic anticlimax. First, there was the issue of the availability of venues and with renovation and development for World Cup 2011 going on at the main grounds, the home-and-away format was sacrificed for neutral grounds and the duration of the event shortened. Then the New Zealand series put paid to the chances of the international stars participating in the league. As if that wasn’t enough, a late monsoon pushed the NCL’s start back by a week. When it finally kicked off, the three matches had a total of five completed innings as rain, courtesy a depression in the Bay of Bengal, forced an indefinite postponement of the tournament. Dhaka Division, however, weren’t complaining after making good use of the three days of reasonable weather up north in Rajshahi against Khulna Division but the rains held sway in the other venues.Despite having players of quality, Dhaka have not had the desired results in recent past. All that could change this year with a batting line-up boasting the class of Mohammad Ashraful, Mehrab Hossain Jr, Shamsur Rahman and the exciting talent of Rony Talukder, Shuvagoto Hom and Anamul Haque. Khulna on the other hand remain a shadow of their 2007-08 ‘dream team’ without Mashrafe Mortaza, Shakib Al Hasan, Abdur Razzak, Imrul Kayes and now retired Habibul Bashar, and they were under pressure from the start after putting Dhaka in on a true surface.Having lost his place in the Bangladesh side, captain Ashraful hit a fluent 113 to revive his World Cup hopes. With the ball coming on to the bat nicely, Ashraful was unstoppable and after his exit, Hom, a stand-by for the New Zealand series, and the Bangladesh Under 19 wicketkeeper Anamul went after the Khulna attack to reach their maiden first-class tons as Dhaka surged to 496. At 191 for 6, Khulna were staring at the prospect of following on after Tushar Imran’s promising 54 was neutralised by an Ashraful delivery. Khulna captain Saghir Hossain (65) tried to lift the spirits on day three, a tough ask with Dolar Mahmud and Syed Rasel already headed for Dhaka on emergency call-up to the national team. Left-arm spinner Elias Sunny polished off the tail to finish with 5 for 77 as Khulna folded for 277 giving Dhaka the batting bonus. Ashraful did not enforce the follow-on and when Dhaka batted again Shamsur punished the severely-weakened Khulna bowling on way to a rapid 102. Closing at 170 for 5 with a lead of 489, Dhaka must have fancied full points with a clinical last-day effort. The elements however, had other plans. On a dodgy outfield battered by continuous showers in Jessore, champions Rajshahi Division were frustrated when just 15 overs could be bowled on a dry first day against Sylhet Division. On day two they found Enamul Haque Jnr (4 for 43) using all his experience and guile under a murky sky and on a sluggish pitch. Khaled Mashud’s side were dismissed for 160 and the Sylhet openers were at the crease for around five minutes and two balls before the skies opened up. Not another ball was bowled as the game was washed out.In Bogra, the towering Barisal Division left-arm seamer Shafaq Al Zabir impressed with an inspired new-ball burst that had Chittagong Division gasping at 3 for 16. Zabir was once considered the next great hope after Mortaza but could never live up to that billing. Here, however, he was in his element and had openers Gazi Salahuddin and Nafees Iqbal lbw by bringing the ball back in menacingly. Nazimuddin (91) steadied the innings but Barisal continued to take wickets at the other end. Chittagong were all out for 202 and Barisal closed the first day on 55 for 2. They limped to 119 for 6 in the 37 overs of play on the second day, but rain scuppered what was turning into an interesting tussle.Player of the week – Mohammad AshrafulKnowing that every innings matters if he wants to return to the Bangladesh side, Ashraful batted like a man possessed against Khulna. His timing, which had deserted him even in the Bangladesh nets, was back and there was a calmness and assurance about him that has not been on view recently. Dhaka had three centurions in the first innings but only one of them actually showed the way. Ashraful’s captaincy was also imaginative and he was not shy in taking the ball in his hand when others couldn’t make inroads.

Everton eye move for Chris Rigg

Everton are interested in signing Sunderland teenage sensation Chris Rigg who is valued at £1m despite being just 14-years-old.

What’s the story?

According to The Daily Star, Everton are battling with Newcastle to sign teenage wonderkid Chris Rigg from Sunderland.

He has already featured for the Black Cats’ under 18’s side, but despite playing on Wearside, Rigg is a Newcastle fan, so Everton will have to work hard to secure his signature.

It’s not for the first time that the Toffees have been interested in signing a Sunderland prospect, with their current goalkeeper and England international Jordan Pickford coming through the Academy of Light.

He’s the best talent for his age

At just 14 he is deemed the best talent for his age and when he’s already appearing in the under-18 Premier League it’s hard to disagree.

Rigg has made seven appearances this season and has directly contributed in three goals in that time.

Thanks to Pickford’s £25.6m move to Goodison Park in 2017 it might make it easier for Everton to secure Rigg’s services. They will no doubt already have a relationship with Sunderland and they could even use Pickford to help persuade the youngster and his family to choose them.

The Black Cats will also be reluctant to let Rigg head to their closest rivals so could also try and push the player in the direction of Merseyside.

Sunderland won’t want the player to leave the Stadium of Light, but they may have no choice once Premier League clubs come calling. However, they are currently pushing for promotion out of League One and will hope that success could persuade Rigg to stay at Sunderland a bit longer.

Rigg is yet to receive a call up for England at youth level but we suspect that if he continues performing for Sunderland then it won’t be long before that happens.

In terms of if he moves, Everton are historically known for producing good players from their academy with Anthony Gordon one of the latest graduates to shine for the first team.

The prospect of working with Everton manager and Premier League legend Frank Lampard has also got to be a consideration. Whilst Rigg wouldn’t be likely to go into the first team if a move happened, to be able to have a figure like him around would be inspiring enough.

Wherever he goes it’s likely he’ll have a bright future, and this is certainly a name to keep an eye on.
