Anderlecht ace confirms Arsenal transfer talks & Wenger hopes to secure new deal – Best of AFC

When the first international break of the season comes around it gives a club time to reflect on a their start to the domestic campaign and assess how their new faces have settled in to their new environment. For the Gunners they can look back on the first two weeks of the new term with a broad smile on their face. Three games in, no goals conceded and five points from a possible nine on the board. Not bad after a summer that saw Arsene Wenger wave goodbye to his two most influential players. A 2-0 victory at Anfield last Sunday certainly laid bare a slight modification in philosophy at the Emirates Stadium with many attributing the North Londoners’ promising start to the influence of Steve Bould following his promotion to assistant manager in place of recently retired Pat Rice. It may only be early doors but Bould’s influence has already shone through with the Gunners back four visibly brimming with confidence, structure and discipline Wengers’ new number two is rightly taking the plaudits for that. With an attack bristling with new blood, fresh energy and bags of creativity there is a sense that the club, having removed any remnants of past glories, are now ready to move forward and finally end its seven year trophy drought.

“I expected the departure of Robin van Persie. We all expected it. It was ‘obvious’. But the Alex one, it was a surprise! He is 24 years old, he has three years remaining on his contract. I still do not understand. It is huge loss for the club. When you see the two best players of last season leave, you have a lot of questions. Sometimes in the street the fans talk to me. I can understand they are upset. I am just like them, I don’t understand everything. At Arsenal you come back after holidays, you make preparations, and you see two players leave and the season resumes – it has been like that since I have been at the club. I am used to it now” Bacary Sagna criticises Arsenal summer transfer policy

Tottenham Hotspur should not fight West Ham United for Alassane Plea

Tottenham Hotspur face a battle to sign Nice attacker Alassane Plea as West Ham United have launched a £27m bid, according toÂSky Sports News.

What’s the word?

The 25-year-old has been a relatively unknown figure on English shores, but he has seemingly attracted the attention of some Premier League clubs.

Tottenham are believed to be one, but West Ham have taken the first step by submitting a bid worth £27m, according to Sky Sports News reporter Kaveh Solhekol.

How far will England get in Russia? Tell us now and win any World Cup shirt of your choice.

It is easy to see why clubs have been impressed by Plea due to his performances for Nice in the 2017-18 campaign.

In 48 appearances in all competitions, the forward scored 21 goals, 16 of which were struck in Ligue 1, and created seven assists.

Not only have West Ham tabled an offer, but reports add that Borussia Monchengladbach have had one bid denied, while Newcastle United hold an interest.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”258359″ player=”12034″ title=”The World Cup Twitter Report”]

What should Tottenham do?

Mauricio Pochettino could do with recruiting a new attacking player, and there is no doubt that Plea has skill and ability to find the back of the net on a consistent basis.

However, with the level of interest, it is unlikely that this deal would be a smooth one, and the North London outfit could find themselves spending too much time in a bidding war when they could be focusing on other areas of the pitch to strengthen.

Tottenham are not in desperate need of a goalscorer considering the fact that Harry Kane netted 30 times in the Premier League last season.

Also, no disrespect to the clubs who are pursuing Plea, but Spurs are a higher calibre outfit, so perhaps it is concerning that only mid-table teams are interested.

Top 15 Premier League starlets that ‘should be loaned out’ in January

It seems years ago now, well in fact it was years ago, but Kieran Richardson’s loan move to West Brom back in 2005 proved to be one of the most genius pieces of Premier League business in the history of the competition. The former Manchester United youngster was in lethal form and at times appeared to be keeping the Baggies up single-handed. At the end of the season, West Brom avoided relegation with much of the plaudits going to their young loan signing.

The English top flight is littered with youngsters just waiting for a first-team opportunity and the chance to make a difference at a smaller club in order to stake a claim for a first team spot back at their parent club.

We don’t have room to tell you all of them, so here is a collection of the Top 15 Premier League youngsters that clubs should consider loaning in January that would be beneficial to both parties.

Former Reds star insists striker will stay at Liverpool

Former Liverpool winger Steve McManaman believes Luis Suarez will stay at the club for years to come, reports the Daily Star.

The Uruguayan signed a new long term contract worth a reported £200k a week in December, and McManaman believes he is set to honour it despite continued interest from Arsenal and Real Madrid.

“I think he will stay. He’s signed a new contract,” McManaman said.

“It’s important for superstars to play in the Champions League every week. It is the over-riding fact that they want to test themselves against the best players.

“Liverpool are on the right track. If they finish suddenly finish sixth in the league there will be question marks but if they win the league or second or third and are in the Champions League there won’t be any assumptions about whether he stays or goes.

“He will stay and it will be up to Liverpool whether they want to sell him rather than the other way round.”

Liverpool closed the gap on league leaders Chelsea to just one point after a 2-1 win over Sunderland last night, and McManaman believes they can challenge all the way in the title race.

“They have got real strength in depth,” headded.

“Like Arsenal everybody was expecting Liverpool during March to drop points but they go to Old Trafford and won, go to Cardiff and won and suddenly everybody starts to think that they are quietly chipping away.

“It would be great if they did but it will be hard with Man City at Anfield, Chelsea at Anfield.

“Anybody who has been involved with Liverpool does not expect miracles this year. You don’t expect to jump from seventh last year, 20 points behind Manchester United, to winning the league.

“You just want progression and we have had it in bucketloads this year.

“If Liverpool can qualify for the Champions League without having a qualifying game, finishing first or second, that would be even better.

“If they win the league that would be incredible.”

Predicting Manchester United’s best starting XI this season

Having already gone through transfer deadline day, no additional reinforcements can be added until the window reopens in January; therefore Manchester United will have to do with the players at their disposal.

Despite being linked with a high profile centre-back throughout the summer, Louis van Gaal ended the clubs shopping spree with one of the biggest shocks after completing a season-long loan deal for Monaco striker Radamel Falcao.

Still, without a newly signed proper central defender, here is a predicted starting XI for the Red Devils this coming season, with reference to the usual 3-5-2 formation.

[ffc-gallery]

CLICK ON WAYNE ROONEY TO REVEAL

[/ffc-gallery]

Goalkeeper

Name: David De Gea

Age: 23

Nationality: Spain

Reason for selection:

David De Gea is the current club number one and is the easiest pick for Louis van Gaal given he was one of the only players to perform last season prior to his arrival.

He currently has no competition as Manchester United’s man between the sticks.

Centre-Back Right

Name: Phil Jones

Age: 22

Nationality: England

Reason for selection:

Phil Jones looks to be the most solid of the current Manchester United defensive players and given his form in the first three matches, it looks as though he will most likely retain his place in the back three. His no nonsense hard-man tackling style is seen as a great asset in a rather weak United backline.

Centre-Back

Name: Jonny Evans

Age: 26

Nationality: Northern Ireland

Reason for selection:

With both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic departing Manchester United in the summer, Jonny Evans became the senior centre-back at the club.

Despite his highly unconvincing display upon his return against MK Dons, Louis van Gaal will most likely keep to playing Evans at the centre of his back three.

Centre-Back Left

Name: Marcos Rojo

Age: 24

Nationality: Argentina

Reason for selection:

Given Manchester United can finalize his work permit troubles, Marcos Rojo will be the perfect fit for the last slot in the back three.

Although he normally plays as a left back, his change to a more central role will highlight the fact that he may need to focus a lot more on the defensive side of play.

Right Wing Back

Name: Angel Di Maria

Age: 26

Nationality: Argentina

Reason for selection:

Angel Di Maria is most effective on the flanks as Louis van Gaal will need to exploit his abilities in order to get the best out of his record breaking £59.7million signing.

Keeping in mind that he was out pacing everyone as a right winger for Real Madrid prior to the arrival of Gareth Bale, he could very well return to that role, with some added defensive responsibilities he may need to adapt to.

Left Wing Back

Name: Luke Shaw

Age: 19

Nationality: England

Reason for selection:

Once Luke Shaw returns to full fitness, he will easily be first choice left wing back due to his ability to attack as well as defend. Given his age, he has huge room for improvement as first-team experience will only make him a better player.

Plus, Manchester United would not have spent such a huge fee on him if he was just going to sit on the bench. With Angel Di Maria on the right and Shaw on the left, Louis van Gaal would have opened up two additional attacking outlets, taking the pressure off the more centrally positioned playmakers.

Central Midfielder

Name: Ander Herrera

Age: 25

Nationality: Spain

Reason for selection:

Manchester United bought in Ander Herrera because of his ability to control as well as dictate the pace of the game from a central midfield role.

He is seen as the player who will be keeping hold of the ball, maintain possession, as most importantly, linking the backline to the more attacking outlets, either down the two flanks, or straight down the middle.

Central Midfielder

Name: Daley Blind

Age: 24

Nationality: Netherlands

Reason for selection:

After failing to secure the services of a proper defensive midfielder, Daley Blind is the next best thing as he will most likely be given an anchorman’s role in the heart of the Manchester United midfield.

He should be seen playing deeper than Ander Herrera as he will be the one that tried to stop counter-attacks as well as been seen as a ball winner. However, if he is given a chance to roam forward, he could be just as effective in the attacking third as he is in his own defensive half.

Name: Wayne Rooney

Age: 28

Nationality: England

Reason for selection:

Wayne Rooney is often seen dropping rather deep for a striker and trying to control the game from a more central position, hence with the arrival of Falcao, he could shine just behind the striking pair.

If he is moved into an attacking midfield role, it will give him a lot of freedom in the attacking third to try and be the playmaker while also opting to create trouble with his long ranged shooting ability.

Striker

Name: Robin van Persie

Age: 31

Nationality: Netherlands

Reason for selection:

Robin van Persie is a proven goal-scorer if he can return to full fitness and begin taking his chances once more. Having already worked with Louis van Gaal, the Dutch manager will know exactly how he should deploy Van Persie in order to get the best of him.

A link up with Radamel Falcao can mean Manchester United might be well on their way to having the most lethal attacking force in the English Premier League.

Striker

Name: Radamel Falcao

Age: 28

Nationality: Colombia

Reason for selection:

Excluding his injury stricken career with Monaco last season, Radamel Falcao netted 52 goals in 68 games for Atletico Madrid prior to his move to Ligue 1, showing exactly why scoring shouldn’t be a problem.

Falcao will definitely play and will simply be put in the striking position with the sole purpose of being the main scoring outlet all the Manchester United players should look to get the ball to.

Middlebrook continues to shine

Refreshingly, no one at the County Ground made a secret of their interest in the game unfolding at Chelmsford between third-placed Essex and Glamorgan

19-Sep-2013
ScorecardFile photo: James Middlebrook made his highest score of the season•PA Photos

James Middlebrook continued to impress for promotion-chasing Northamptonshire on day three of their Division Two clash with Kent. Northamptonshire ended the rain-affected day’s play on 183 for 1 from 47 overs in their first innings, as Middlebrook made his highest score of the season, hitting an unbeaten 87 from 134 balls to eclipse the 84 he scored against Leicestershire in June.It was a fine batting performance from the 36-year-old allrounder, who had recorded career-best bowling figures of 6 for 78 on Wednesday. Home captain Stephen Peters was also in fine form with the bat as he posted a stylish half-century, his fifth of the season, before falling for 68 off the bowling of Mark Davies.Northamptonshire, who started the game in the second promotion position, 21 points ahead of Essex, will continue their chase for maximum batting bonus points with Middlebrook and David Sales – on 25 not out – at the crease.David Ripley’s men had begun day three in a sticky position after Kent, who finished a weather-beaten first day on 60 for 1, racked up an impressive 418. That led Northamptonshire to employ a safety-first option early on, with Peters and Middlebrook starting in secure fashion, fending off opening bowlers Davies and Charlie Shreck.Shreck was keeping it tight, registering two maidens in as many overs as Kent attempted to get an early breakthrough. But they were unable to make any inroads before the rain struck 25 minutes into the day, with Northamptonshire 15 without loss after seven overs.Play eventually resumed four-and-a-half hours later, with the home side keen to get on with it as their promotion battle with Essex intensifies.Davies and Shreck continued to limit the flow as the batsmen took time to find their rhythm, seeing the ball beat the bat on several occasions. However, once they got into their stride, the home batsmen treated the County Ground fans to some fine shots, Peters particularly impressive as he registered his 64th first class half-century from 82 balls.Middlebrook also made his way to 50 from the same number of deliveries as Northamptonshire started to step on the accelerator and Kent began to toil. Peters eventually provided them with some respite, finding the safe hands of Daniel Bell-Drummond to reward Davies for his efforts. But Middlebrook continued to plough on alongside Sales as Northamptonshire put themselves in a good position for the extra points they desire on the final day.

It will be tough to bat last – Waller

Malcolm Waller is hopeful Zimbabwe’s tail can wag with the vigour Pakistan’s did if the home team are avoid batting in conditions which may be too difficult to chase a target

Firdose Moonda in Harare04-Sep-2013

Malcolm Waller hopes the tail will stretch Zimbabwe’s lead on the third morning•Associated Press

Malcolm Waller is hopeful Zimbabwe’s tail can wag with the vigour Pakistan’s did if the home team wants to avoid batting in conditions which may be too difficult to chase a target. Although Hamilton Masakadza believed the pitch would not deteriorate too much on the final day of the match when he won the toss and chose to bowl, Waller indicated some of the cracks could cause problems for Zimbabwe when they bat again.”I think the fourth innings will be very different,” Waller said. “There are few footmarks for the left-handers and there are some cracks. Even though they are not opening up much, they might do later on. When we come to bat again, it will be different and we will see a bit more turn.”Zimbabwe have a slim first-innings lead of 32 but with three wickets in hand, will draw inspiration from their opposition’s ninth-wicket stand of 67. With that aim, they will also look to deny Pakistan what Waller considers the best of the batting conditions on the middle day of the match. “Tomorrow will be really good for batting,” he said. “It might do a bit in the morning but if we can see that off and bat for as long as possible that will be good for us.”Being down to their last batting pair of sorts means a large amount of the run-scoring responsibility will fall on Elton Chigumbura and Shingi Masakadza, who turned 27 today and said he plans to the spend the evening “quietly”. Against a Pakistan attack with a ball just seven overs old, Waller said the line-up knows exactly what they are up against. “Make no mistake, their whole attack is very good. We know we are up for a fight against these guys,” he said. ”But we’ve gone in there really positive and we’ll do that again.”Waller said the new coach, his father, had helped the batsmen adapt their techniques to batting longer, which was what they failed to do in previous Tests. “He’s done a lot of work with us,” he said. “He communicates very well and it seems to be working. We are following game plans better.”Saeed Ajmal agreed that Zimbabwe displayed more staying power than he has known them to but attributed some of it to the placid pitch. “They played very well but the wicket is a flat-batting track. There is no turn,” he said. “Only when the ball is older, like maybe 60 overs, it is turning a little. But it’s not sharp turn, it’s slow turn.”With little to assist him, Ajmal confessed he was “not happy” with his figures because “I have to take a few more wickets”. But for now, he is content to leave it to the likes of Rahat Ali to do the damage and in the process cement a place in the team. “He is a youngster and he is learning. In the future, he will be very good for Pakistan,” he said.
