New Zealand allrounder Jimmy Neesham has been ruled out of the first Test against India in Kanpur due to a rib injury. But since he is expected to be fit for the second Test, which begins on September 30, New Zealand Cricket have opted not to name any replacements.Neesham picked up the injury during training last Thursday, and it had affected his participation in the warm-up fixture against Mumbai in Delhi. He didn’t bat in either innings and bowled just five overs.Mike Hesson, the New Zealand coach, expected Neesham to return to full fitness ahead of the second Test in Kolkata. “Jimmy was struck in the nets and has been in discomfort the last few days,” he said. “It will take a few days for the bruising to go away, but it’s very much a short-term injury.”This comes as yet another setback for Neesham, who hasn’t played international cricket since the recurrence of a back injury last November. He is the second player from the squad in India to have fitness issues after Tim Southee had to return home with a ligament strain on his left ankle. Matt Henry was brought in. Squad for first Test: Kane Williamson (capt), Trent Boult, Doug Bracewell, Mark Craig, Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Henry Nicholls, Luke Ronchi, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Ross Taylor, Neil Wagner, BJ Watling.

"Concrete" Managerial Target Appears For Spurs In Search

Ange Postecoglou is on Tottenham Hotspur's list as they search for a new manager, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed.

What's the latest on Spurs' manager search?

Daniel Levy has faced a few difficult weeks again as Spurs struggled to find a new manager, with pursuits of Julian Nagelsmann and Arne Slot falling through.

They have now turned their attention to the Celtic manager, and it has now been reported that the Hoops expect Postecoglou to depart the club as Spurs' interest grows.

The Australian has been a resounding success at Celtic, winning back-to-back titles, and could secure a domestic treble if his side win the Scottish Cup final.

Speaking on the Here We Go Podcast, Romano confirmed that the 57-year-old is being targeted for a move to North London.

"Spurs are deciding on the director very soon, and then they will pick the new manager. I'm told that Ange Postecoglou, who is doing an excellent job at Celtic, is a concrete name in the list," he stated.

"They wanted Arne Slot but no way, he extended his contract at Feyenoord, that was a crazy situation last week.

"It's really crazy, because it's not the first time it has happened, in the summer when they appointed Nuno [Espirito Santo], it was like a three, four or five weeks negotiation, with many managers, and then they ended up with Nuno so it's always like that at Tottenham. They need to clarify the situation as soon as possible."

Could Postecoglou be a good appointment for Spurs?

The Australian's success at Celtic bodes well for Spurs, taking over a team which had lost the title to Rangers, and winning back-to-back leagues in style.

Celtic scored an astonishing 114 goals in 38 league games this season, and asserted their dominance over their rivals, having knocked them out of both cup competitions.

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou.

Postecoglou has successfully implemented his style at the Hoops in this time, playing attacking football with a 4-3-3 formation, and if he can translate this success to Spurs, he could gain the support of fans very quickly if the team starts playing a more entertaining style to that of Conte or Jose Mourinho before him.

Attackers such as Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski both struggled this season, but playing under an attacking coach like Postecoglou could help them rediscover their form.

Celtic attackers Kyogo Furuhashi, Jota, Daizen Maeda and Liel Abada all scored 10 or more goals this season, and if Postecoglou can manage similarly at Spurs, who were reliant on Harry Kane going forward, they may see some improvement next season.

Shafiq and Younis centuries put Pakistan into the driving seat

Hundreds from Asad Shafiq and Younis Khan, the latter unbeaten, helped Pakistan to 340 for 6 and their most comprehensive day’s batting of the tour so far

The Report by Andrew Miller12-Aug-2016 Pakistan 340 for 6 (Younis 101*, Sarfraz 17*) lead England 328 by 12 runs
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsIt was across the river Thames, at Lord’s last month, where Pakistan’s stunning victory in the first Test set the agenda for a series that has proven to be constantly enthralling, if not always as competitive as had initially been promised. But now, on their return to London, a city in which England have found success strangely elusive in recent months, Pakistan fronted up with their most comprehensive day’s batting of the tour so far, to give themselves real hope of snatching a 2-2 draw from the fourth and final Test at the Kia Oval. Thanks to centuries from Asad Shafiq and Younis Khan, plus a gutsy 49 from Azhar Ali and even a bonus 26 in the first hour of the day from the nightwatchman, Yasir Shah, Pakistan confounded their doubters, having resumed on an ominous 3 for 1 overnight, to reach 340 for 6, a lead of 12, at the close of a perfect day for run-harvesting. Their position might have been even stronger but for the efforts of Chris Woakes. He had been let down by his catchers in a messy start to England’s day, but got his just deserts shortly before the close, striking twice in five balls after rightfully earning a share of the new ball. The mainstay of Pakistan’s performance was Shafiq, promoted up the order following the indignity of a pair in last week’s third Test, who answered the call with a gutsy, patient and hugely accomplished ninth Test century. He picked his strokes with authority, particularly through the covers, and showed admirable resolve in waiting 17 nervy deliveries on 99 before easing a cathartic single past mid-on off the spin of Moeen Ali to reach three figures. But it was the return of the King that really set Pakistan’s innings apart from its flimsy predecessors at Old Trafford and Edgbaston. Just as Misbah-ul-Haq had done at Lord’s, so Younis at The Oval provided that stamp of old-stager authority to ensure that Pakistan’s hint of a revival during the day’s first two sessions had been transformed into real substance by the close. He too endured an anxious time on 99, stuck at the non-striker’s end as Woakes’s startling bounce accounted for Misbah, caught at gully for 15, and then the debutant Iftikhar Ahmed for an ugly top-edged smear to Moeen at mid-on, one ball after thumping his first runs straight down the ground. But Younis has seen it all before, and having waited six deliveries, spread across four overs, for the right moment, he nurdled Woakes into the leg side to bring up a masterful 32nd Test hundred, from 139 balls. Like Shafiq before him, Younis settled for a celebratory sajdah but none of the salutes and press-ups that had characterised Pakistan’s previous milestones. The time for team-galvanising gestures has long gone. Now it is all about the cricket and the series scoreline, and by the close, he was still in situ, unbeaten on 101 with Sarfraz Ahmed settling in confidently alongside him on 17.The feature of Younis’s innings was that it lacked many features at all. Somehow, through a combination of willpower, hard work in the nets and a greater degree of confidence in the Oval conditions, he had managed to shelve those anxious pogo-stick pushes that had characterised his lack of form earlier in the series, and instead produced an innings that was grounded in every sense. With every passing delivery, Younis looked more and more like his regal former self – a man with more than 9000 Test runs to his name, including (as the Oval scoreboard was proud to announce shortly before tea) more than 1000 fours and counting. Fifteen of those have come in this innings alone, as well as a mighty swipe into the OCS Stand, as he made it his elder statesman’s duty, like Misbah previously in the series, to take the cudgels to England’s spinner, Moeen. For England, it was a day that finished on an uplifting note, and with the new ball still fresh, they will expect to keep Pakistan’s lead to the sort of manageable proportions that they achieved at Edgbaston last week. But the first session in particular was a very different story, as three catches went down, one of each of the batsmen to feature at that stage. As England themselves demonstrated in the first innings, when a spate of let-offs allowed Jonny Bairstow and Moeen to engineer their own recovery from 110 for 5, opportunities on this pitch are hard to recreate when they are allowed to go begging. The first to benefit – though not for long as it turned out – was the nightwatchman, Yasir, who had been the focus of heated attention from England’s fielders when play resumed, on account of his disputed catch at square leg to dismiss Alex Hales in England’s first innings.Hales, who had joined Broad in a Twitter conversation at the close of play in which they cast doubt on the dismissal, was seen in animated conversation with Yasir during the opening overs of the day, and so there was no little irony when Hales, of all people, shelled a dolly in the gully as Yasir fenced loosely outside off from the very first ball of Woakes’ day. Before he could make the chance count, Steven Finn struck in his second over, finding sharp lift from a tight off-stump line for Joe Root to take a calmly juggled edge at second slip, but he had done his job well, and proven to his team-mates that England were there to be rattled.Azhar, who had been the silent partner during a bonus stand of 49 for the second wicket, was then joined by Shafiq, who had been slated to come in at No. 3 before Yasir’s promotion. And though he got off the mark for the first time since the Old Trafford Test, he too should have been on his way for 7 when Woakes, once again, found some extra lift outside off stump, only for Anderson at third slip to let the chance fizz through his fingers for four. And, with lunch approaching, Azhar completed the hat-trick of escapes when, on 35, he came forward to another sharp delivery from Finn and looped a tantalising chance straight back at the bowler, who got both hands to the offering but couldn’t cling on.The pair had taken their stand along to 75 when Moeen made the breakthrough, albeit in mildly irregular circumstances. Despite being under pressure throughout the series, he has retained a happy knack of prising out vital wickets, and when Azhar dropped to his knees for a missed sweep, England enthusiastically called for a review. Azhar was found to be out – though not via an lbw, as the ball looped straight up in the air off his gloves. Bairstow behind the stumps had pocketed the chance almost as an afterthought, but the deflection was clear on Hot Spot and England had the breakthrough. And so, into the fray came Younis, a skittish presence all series long, but visibly more grounded from the outset, as he fought to control the ticks and twitches that had crept into his game in the first three Tests. In particular his flicks off the pads, the cause of several downfalls in the series to date, were performed from a much more stable base, as he kept his balance and made England pay whenever they strayed in line. There was an inevitability about his innings that could only previously have been applied to his impending dismissals, and that was never better showcased than in the manner with which he reached his half-century. During the same passage of play in which Shafiq, on 99, was being tortured by Anderson’s drip-drip tactics outside off, he simply leant back and caned the same bowler through backward point for four.Shafiq’s lack of showmanship meant he was well placed to absorb the pressure of the match situation, and it took England’s most memorable moment of a poor day in the field to end his vigil on 109. Finn, another man whose efforts hadn’t earned the rewards that he might have expected on a different day, banged in a rare long-hop that indicated, perhaps, that his happy old knack for wicket-taking is slowly seeping back into his game. Shafiq rocked into a pull only for Broad at short midwicket to cling onto a blinder with two hands, diving to his left.He departed with disappointment, but he had more than played his part. Just as at Lord’s, where his vital twin contributions of 73 and 49 were overshadowed by a masterful hundred from his captain, so this innings was destined to take second place in his nation’s affections. But he won’t mind that one bit. As he told ESPNcricinfo recently, “I want to do things very simply and quietly”. He certainly did that, and more. And he could yet have set Pakistan up for a remarkable share of the spoils.

Rangers: Calvin Bassey in ‘no rush to leave’

Rangers defender Calvin Bassey is in ‘no rush to leave’ Ibrox this summer, claims Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge.

The Lowdown: Transfer interest

According to Sky Sports, Aston Villa are among a number of Premier League clubs who have made enquiries about the 22-year-old.

Having signed Bassey for Rangers in 2020, former boss Steven Gerrard is said to want to reunite with the defender at Villa Park.

It is understood that it would take a bid around the £25m mark to bring Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Ross Wilson to the negotiating table.

The Latest: Bridge drops teasing update

Bridge doesn’t believe that Bassey needs to leave Ibrox this summer, given his rapid rise to stardom in the Scottish Premiership.

Speaking with GiveMeSport, he claimed:

“There’s already cheeky articles from Celtic-based journalists in Scotland, saying ‘Rangers should cash in on him now,’ but I think that’s them being cheeky.

“He’s only 22 and is he in no rush to leave, so I think you’ll get a lot of that over the next few weeks.”

The Verdict: Huge news for Rangers

According to FB Ref, the defender sensationally ranks in the 99th percentile for both blocked shots and dribbles completed when compared with positional peers across Europe, showing his talents on both sides of the ball.

As a result, it is no surprise to see Bassey on the receiving end of top praise from experienced defenders. For example, former Rangers man Alan Hutton dubbed the 22-year-old a ‘warrior’ after a ‘ten-out-of-ten’ performance in the Scottish Cup final.

With Bridge thinking Bassey may stay at the Ibrox beyond the summer, this will come as big news to Rangers fans, who will be desperate to keep the bulk of their squad together and mount a real challenge to take the title back next term.

Saturday Is Not About Revenge For Klopp As Liverpool Face Real Madrid Once Again

With Liverpool admirably battling back from an at one stage 14 point deficit to take the 2021/22 Premier League title race right down to the wire with Manchester City, it needed the final ten minutes of action to finally separate Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola’s sides, with the latter eventually winning out as they fought back from two goals behind in the game against Aston Villa to secure this years title by a single point.

For Liverpool, this is not the time to dwell on the obvious disappointment the team, and the fans will feel, from running the expensively assembled City squad right to the end of the campaign and then missing out by a single goal, as their full focus needs to be on their preparation for this coming Saturday’s Champions League Final against Real Madrid at the Stade de France.

With former England winger Steve McManaman knowing both clubs well from his time with each of them, he has conducted a couple of good interviews with Betway this week, explaining his memory of the competition and his own experiences in major show piece finals.

The media have certainly latched to the history between both sides here, with Liverpool losing out four years ago against the same opponents, but Liverpool also have a history with new manager Carlo Ancelotti given their clashes against AC Milan and Roma in previous years.

Both Egyptian wizard Mohamed Salah and Ancelotti himself have acknowledged that there might be a bit of needle between the sides given the history.  Salah said ahead of Madrid’s semi final clash:

“I want to play Madrid, I have to be honest. City are a really tough team, we played against them a few times this season. I think personally, I would prefer Madrid. We lost in the final to them so I want to play against them and hopefully win it.”

Adding after Real were confirmed as Final opponents:

“We have a score to settle.”

When asked about his words, Ancelotti answered.

“We have met many times. Losing with them was a tragedy with Roma in 1984 and 2005. Then the revenge, which Salah says, in 2007. I respect him a lot. One of the best experiences of my career is seeing the push Bernabeu or Anfield. In addition to the beautiful experience of being rivals with Everton. I like their history, that of Paisley, they have six Champions Leagues, only one less than Milan…that’s an extra motivation too. My Milanist friends tell me don’t let them reach seven.”

With mind games afoot, Klopp took a different approach when he met with press on Wednesday afternoon, rubbishing suggestions that revenge for 2018 would be a driver for his side.

“This was a harsh night for us – it was tough to take. But I don’t believe in revenge or think revenge is a fantastic idea. I understand what Mo said – he wants to put it right. But in Germany we say you always meet twice in life. If we get the chance to win it this time it will be a great story, but it will not be because of what happened in 2018.”

Whatever now happens, the stage is set for the Final to be quite the spectacle with the calibre of players that will be on show, and each side has players that are more than capable of winning it – so the neutrals should be in for a fantastic affair.

Celtic struck gold with Carl Starfelt

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou made no bones in making some significant changes to the squad at Parkhead after he was appointed manager back in June.

The previous summer transfer window saw some big names wave goodbye to the club such as Odsonne Edouard, Ryan Christie, Kristoffer Ajer, Olivier Ntcham and Scott Brown among others.

As well as this, the Hoops saw numerous other players sign to the Parkhead side on loan or permanent deals.

One figure that was signed during that period was defender Carl Starfelt, who joined from Rubin Kazan on a four-year deal for a reported fee of £4m.

Throughout his debut campaign with the Bhoys, the £17k-per-week centre-back racked up 49 appearances across all competitions, showing just how much of an important figure he was for Postecoglou.

Not only did he play more minutes in the league than any other outfield player in the squad, but he also showed what a capable and solid defender he is.

With the second-highest number of interceptions (42) and tackles won (30) to his name, Starfelt also had the joint-second highest average of clearances (3.5) and joint-highest average for aerial duels won per game (4.2).

Looking at how Celtic ended the season with the best defensive record with only 22 goals conceded in 38 games, it’s safe to say that their defensive recruit has been a big reason the Hoops have that record under their belt.

This also backs up why the Sweden international was labelled as being a “crucial” player for his manager by journalist Sacha Pisani on Twitter.

Back in April 2020, Transfermarkt rated the 26-year-old’s market value at £473k, whereas it currently stands at £3.6m, highlighting a significant increase of 661%.

This shows the sort of trajectory he’s been on over the past couple of years and based on what he’s done for his new club since his arrival, there’s no reason that progress can’t continue for the foreseeable future.

Taking all of this into account, it’s hard to deny that Starfelt has been a fantastic signing for not only Celtic but for Postecoglou as well at the start of his tenure in charge of the Bhoys.

West Ham interested in Mattias Svanberg

West Ham United are reportedly interested in a move for Bologna midfielder Mattias Svanberg, according to reports in Italy.

What’s the word?

As per 1000 Cuori Rossoblu, the Hammers are said to be one of a handful of Premier League sides that are eyeing a move for the young Swede, with Everton and Tottenham Hotspur also named as potential suitors.

The report suggests that his current side have offered the 23-year-old a new contract – with his existing deal set to expire next summer – although the player appears keen for pastures new at the end of the season, with a bid of around €20m (£17m) likely to tempt the Serie A outfit into a sale.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-this-weeks-latest-west-ham-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-more” title= “Read the latest West Ham news!”]

A stay in Italy could also be on the cards, however, with Napoli and Fiorentina also credited with an interest.

Noble’s heir

News of the Hammers’ interest in a new midfield recruit comes as no real surprise, with long-serving club captain Mark Noble set to depart the London Stadium at the end of the season, having spent his entire career with the east London outfit – aside from two brief loan spells at Ipswich and Hull City.

The 35-year-old stalwart made his senior debut back in 2004 after being promoted from the club’s youth set-up, going on to rack up 548 appearances to date and developing something of a cult hero status in the process.

His impending exit then is set to leave a noticeable void in David Moyes’ squad next term, even though the Englishman has largely been reduced to a bit-part role in recent years.

In need of a replacement, in Svanberg the club could well have found the ideal heir to Noble’s throne, the 18-cap international having caught the eye since making the switch to Bologna from Malmo in 2018.

Such is his talent, one source insisted that “he’s probably one of the top four or five No 8’s in Europe”, while also adding that “he’s a very talented young man. He’s playing for a very defensive Bologna side but he can bring a spark to whichever team he plays in.”

With three goals and three assists to his name thus far in the league, the £13.5m-rated man poses a threat in the final third, while also proving a more than adequate presence at the other end of the pitch, averaging a solid 0.8 interceptions, 1.1 tackles and 0.9 clearances per game thus far this term.

Neither a midfield destroyer nor an all-action goal-getter, Svanberg is simply the glue holding things together in the centre of the park and the man to make things tick – a role that the aforementioned Noble has made his own at West Ham for almost two decades.

As one star departs the club, GSB can secure his ideal replacement this summer.

IN other news, GSB must complete WHU swoop for “unbelievable” £31.5m-rated star, Moyes will love him…
