Rangers fans rage at Porto’s Morelos bid

Many Glasgow Rangers fans were livid after it was revealed that Porto have made a €12m (£10.3m) bid for Alfredo Morelos, with the offer also including a 20% sell-on clause.

The Colombia international has been heavily linked with a move away from Ibrox this summer, with him even said to have agreed personal terms with the Portuguese outfit (Antena 1). The 25-year-old has been a hugely important player for the 55-time Scottish champions since joining in 2017, scoring 94 times in 182 matches (Transfermarkt), but the Gers will know that he will depart at some point.

Whenever he does, they will be looking to get the best possible fee for him. As per Ekrem Konur, Porto believe that sum to be €12m (£10.3m), something which has irked many Gers supporters.

The news was shared on Twitter by Konur, and it attracted plenty of attention from the Ibrox faithful. These fans took to the social media platform to share their thoughts on the update.

Update provided on Saints target Mendez

Juan Sanchez, the agent of Southampton target Brais Mendez, has confirmed that there has been interest from ‘many clubs’ in Mendez’s services.

The Lowdown: Saints eye Mendez

Southampton are said to be interested in the 24-year-old winger (TuttoMercatoWeb), who currently plays for Celta Vigo in La Liga.

There are several other clubs also linked with his services, however, including Norwich City, Lyon, and an unnamed London side.

The Latest: Agent provides update

Speaking to Marca, Sanchez has provided his thoughts on the interest in his client. He said:

“It is inevitable that the clubs are attentive to a player like Brais, 24 years old and with the season he has had. It is normal that there is interest in him and that they exist clubs that ask you. From then on, it is a matter that depends on whether they want to talk to Celta about an offer possibility. That may or may not happen. There is still a lot of market. Of course there are many clubs that ask about their situation because he is a very striking and high-quality player.”

The Verdict: Top talent

Mendez is far from a household name on these shores, but he is becoming a more and more familiar face in Spain and La Liga. He enjoyed the best season of his career from a goalscoring perspective last term, finding the back of the net on nine occasions – he has now done 25 times throughout his career (Transfermarkt) – and that even earned him a call-up to the Spanish national side (AS), albeit as part of the training camp and not to go to the European Championships.

Mendez has three years left on his contract with Celta and is valued at £12.6m (Transfermarkt) – he will not come cheap for Ralph Hasenhuttl and co. However, sometimes, you must speculate to accumulate, and in this case it may be worth the Saints parting with a bigger sum for a talented player who seems to be getting better every year.

West Ham now want to sign Yaremchuk

According to a report by the Daily Express, West Ham United now want Ukraine striker Roman Yaremchuk and it is believed he will ‘push hard’ for his next move this summer.

The Lowdown: West Ham and the striker chase…

Manager David Moyes reportedly has three main priorities in this summer window, namely a permanent deal for 2020/2021 loan sensation Jesse Lingard, a star centre-back and the acquisition of a new striker (Claret & Hugh).

Of the strikers linked in recent months, many have been named, including the likes of Tammy Abraham, Youssef En-Nesyri, Ivan Toney and Adam Armstrong (ExWHUemployee).

Many others are now coming out of the woodwork as the transfer window opens, with Arsenal forward Eddie Nketiah most recently linked as well (Fabrizio Romano).

The Latest: West Ham now want Yaremchuk…

As per the Daily Express, West Ham are now eyeing a move for Euro 2020 star Yaremchuk with the 25-year-old now falling into consideration on Moyes’ striker shortlist.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest/” title=”West Ham latest!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

It is believed he will ‘push hard’ for his next move this summer after having a stellar season with current club Gent.

Yaremchuk bagged 17 goals in the Belgian Pro League last season and stands at a towering 6 foot 3 – potentially marking him out as a good fit for the physicality of the Premier League.

The Verdict: Solid option…

The summer window is still young and West Ham will want to assess the best possible forward options before making any concrete swoops.

Yaremchuk emerges as a potentially fruitful name to enter the fray going by his stance on an exit this summer and fairly impressive tally in front of goal over 20/21 – having managed 23 strikes in all competitions (Transfermarkt).

Valued at around £13.5 million by Transfermarkt, he could also prove to be a less expensive alternative to the likes of Abraham who may cost around £40m by comparison.

Forget Kral: West Ham should sign Thorsby

One of West Ham’s mooted summer targets is available for a bargain fee, according to emerging reports…

What’s the word?

Earlier this month, the Irons were said to have been tracking Sampdoria midfielder Morten Thorsby ahead of a potential move this summer, as per Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness).

It’s now been revealed by Calciomercato that the 25-year-old is available for just €10m (£8.5m) with add-ons included amid interest from their Serie A rivals Napoli.

Thorsby has two years to run on his current deal and has regularly been scouted by teams across Europe, particularly in England and Germany.

Forget Kral

It seems like the central midfield position is an area that Hammers boss David Moyes would like to strengthen going into next season, and quite understandably so.

They are merely one injury to either Tomas Soucek or Declan Rice away from having to rely on retiring skipper Mark Noble. And even then, he’s not enough, with a likely 50-plus game campaign on the horizon after the East London outfit qualified for the Europa League.

One name that has been heavily linked with a move to the London Stadium is Czech sensation Alex Kral but he is thought to be valued in the region of £30m, which would create a considerable dent to their transfer kitty.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-latest-west-ham-news-transfer-gossip-rumours-staff-gsb-moyes-updates-and-more” title= “Read the latest West Ham news, transfer rumours, gossip and more!”]

Considering Moyes also needs a new striker, centre-back and maybe another addition at full-back, it would be unforgivable to splash that much on a backup which is why Thorsby is of great appeal.

The Norway international has enjoyed a very productive season, where he proved to be an influence at either end of the pitch.

Standing at 6 foot 2, his towering presence saw him average 4.2 aerial duels won per game, whilst he also managed 2.3 tackles per outing too. On top of three goals and one assist, via WhoScored.

Only one player in the whole of the Serie A covered more distance per game than Thorsby (11.7km per match).

Workmanlike.

His playing style has been likened to Chelsea powerhouse N’Golo Kante, which may be a surprise based on the height advantage but certainly not based on his statistical output this campaign.

Thorsby also revealed that he caused Cristiano Ronaldo a few problems during Sampdoria’s two meetings with Juventus, claiming that “he was upset” when he robbed him of the ball.

Also described as a “maestro” and as “capable of creating plays out of nowhere,” Thorsby could well be an absolute bargain at just £8.5m and he is certainly a far cheaper option than Kral.

GSB must look to sanction this move, allowing Moyes to properly bolster other key areas this summer.

Minor modifications needed for all major Test centres

KARACHI, July 26: All the major Test centres of the country require minor modifications to help the Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) fight against the menace of match-fixing

Our Sports Reporter27-Jul-2002KARACHI, July 26: All the major Test centres of the country require minor modifications to help the Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) fight against the menace of match-fixing.Col Nooruddin Khawaja, ACU’s regional security manager, Friday said the National Stadium and the Gaddafi Stadium were upto mark. But added that a little more improvement was essential.”I have surveyed and inspected all the stadia of the country, except the Multan Cricket Stadium. And except for minor improvements, the stadia look fine and in accordance to ACU’s universal procedures,” he said. He, for the sake of confidentiality, refused to highlight the `minor’ adjustments but emphasised that the stadia were built when the game was not marked by unsporting activities.”The stadia will be upgraded, not only in Pakistan but everywhere in the world because of something ugly things that have happened in the recent past. ACU’s task is to keep the sport as clean as a whistle and in that context, it has taken several measures. Upgradation of the stadia, including installation of surveillance or spy cameras, if required, is one of the standard procedures,” he said.He said the home board would be responsible for installation of modern equipment. He further said during international matches, he would report directly to the ACU if he had any suspicious.Noor said he would also be talking to the Pakistan players and would be informing them about the latest measures the ACU was taking to deter foul play. But he insisted that the ACU was not suffocating the players.”The cricketers will be briefed about the steps the ACU was taking and the cooperation it would be expecting from them. At the same time, the players will be given assurances that the ACU would neither be spying nor shadowing them.”The players are entitled to free movement and the ACU would maintain that sanctity. But the players need to be explained as to what happened in the past, and what needs to be done in future.”He said most of the recommendations of the ACU have been enforced. He said the contracts the players were signing nowadays with their parent boards included fresh clauses, including penalties and punishments the players were liable to, for violation of code of conduct.Interestingly, the ACU, that has a four million pounds budget and include highly paid officials from Scotland Yard, has failed to identify one single cricketer of being involved in match-fixing.Sir Paul Condon, chief of the ACU, recently claimed that the game was now free of corruption. But everyone believes thatmatch-fixing was still ripe but as always, without any proof.

Ipswich owner on Newcastle takeover

An interesting revelation has been shared on a past Newcastle United takeover attempt.

The Lowdown: Arbitration looms

The arbitration case between the St. James’ Park faithful and the Premier League is set to take place in July over the failed deal between Mike Ashley and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium.

However, this is not the only takeover attempt in the North East during Ashley’s reign, as other parties have looked to buy the Tyneside club off of the hands of the chief executive of Sports Direct.

The Latest: Past takeover attempt

Speaking to Tribal Football (via The Chronicle), Brett Johnson, who is now the owner of Ipswich Town, has shared that a consortium that he was part of was close to taking over from Ashley at the Magpies.

The American businessman claimed that the consortium would have held a minority stake within a full buy-out and the deal was ‘fraught with complexities’.

This took place ‘a couple of years ago’ – long before the KSA group tried and failed with a takeover attempt at NUFC, although a successful arbitration hearing could result in that being put back on track.

Johnson also claimed that his own group had ‘raised some money’ for a potential deal, and added that ‘from our point of view, the value of the exercise was that we did a substantial amount of due diligence, we were able to bring together a bunch of financial sponsors behind our stake in that club’.

The Verdict: Interesting revelation

It is no doubt interesting to hear of other takeover attempts at Newcastle given that the KSA consortium are currently dominating the headlines on that front.

Although there is presumably now no chance of Johnson’s group taking over at St. James’ Park, given that he is currently the owner of Ipswich, the Toon Army will be intrigued to hear just how close he was.

Now, any hope of a takeover in the North East lies in the results of the arbitration hearing, as the Magpies will be hoping that it goes in their favour, and thus brings the potential revival of the original bid one step closer.

Jack Hendry set to leave Celtic

Celtic defender Jack Hendry is close to completing a move to Belgian outfit K.V. Oostende ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

What’s the story?

According to 90min, Oostende have triggered their option to sign the 26-year-old following his successful season-long loan from the Hoops throughout 2020/21.

The report claims a £2 million fee was agreed between the two clubs for Hendry last summer, with Alexander Blessin’s side desperate to secure their man for such a small fee.

Fans will be buzzing

Hendry arrived at Celtic Park back in January 2018 after impressing with fellow Scottish Premiership side Dundee, but the 6 ft 3 centre-back has been unable to replicate his best form with the Glasgow giants.

In two-and-a-half years with the Hoops, the Scotland international made just 27 appearances, failing to establish himself as a first-team regular at any stage.

His underwhelming displays led to a loan move halfway through the 2019/20 campaign that saw Hendry briefly turnout for Melbourne City in Australia.

However, it’s a subsequent spell away from Celtic that appears to have propelled the towering defender back into the limelight.

Hendry made 30 appearances for Oostende as they finished fifth in the Belgian First Division, earning a place in Steve Clarke’s squad for Euro 2020 this summer.

While he’s clearly made progress and improvements during his time away from Scottish football, Hendry often came in for criticism throughout his time at Celtic, and it’s unlikely that the club’s supporters will be sad to see him go.

He routinely made fans feel nervous with the ball at his feet and looked overwhelmed by the pressure of playing for such a big club, often proving to be a liability when in the starting XI, so perhaps this proposed move will be best for all parties.

Hendry’s departure is the start of a summer rebuild for Celtic as they look to overhaul fierce rivals Rangers next season, and bringing in a replacement in the heart of defence is set to be a priority for whoever eventually succeeds Neil Lennon.

And, in other news…Huge claim emerges over Celtic’s managerial pursuit, fans will surely be delighted

West Ham: Update emerges on Moyes’ future

An encouraging update has emerged on the future of David Moyes at West Ham United and it’ll surely leave many absolutely in East London absolutely delighted…

What’s the word?

According to Football Insider, the Irons’ hierarchy are becoming increasingly confident that the 58-year-old will sign a new three-year extension to his contract after fresh talks on Friday.

Moyes was named as a shock contender for the vacant Everton job during the week after Carlo Ancelotti stunned Goodison Park by returning to his former club, Real Madrid.

It’s claimed that negotiations hit a hurdle amid interest from his old team but now there is confidence that the Scot is set to remain at the London Stadium.

In May, Moyes claimed talks over a new deal were “well down the line,” though now in June, we’re yet to see or hear an official announcement.

Hammers boost

There’s no denying that the West Ham boss has been a key orchestrator in their phenomenal turnaround in fortunes in the past 12 months or so.

Having saved the Hammers from relegation with one game to spare during the interrupted 2019/20 campaign, the former Manchester United and Real Sociedad coach steered them into a place in the Europa League next term by clinching sixth place, ahead of teams like Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.

Moyes has been close to sealing a return to the Toffees before as he was considered by Bill Kenwright and Farhad Moshiri before opting for Ancelotti, so it’s no surprise that many in East London were quickly concerned by the news, especially as there was no fresh news on his contractual situation.

But now this new development provides West Ham with a major boost as it shows the Scotsman is committed to the club for the long-term, and that’ll allow him to build on his fine work this season.

Talks at Rush Green have evidently ended positively, so it’s time for the Irons to kickstart their summer business, where both the manager and the fans are desperate to see Jesse Lingard arrive permanently.

His nine goals and four assists helped the Hammers over the line, whilst it is no secret that a new striker is of top priority.

With Moyes close to sealing his long-term future, fans in E20 can start to get a little more excited heading into a historic campaign.

Celtic: Could Ajer be Brown’s successor?

Whoever the new manager at Celtic is, they will face a huge rebuilding job in order to take the Hoops back to their former glories.

They will, however, potentially have to do that without players like Odsonne Edouard.

The Frenchman is one of a number of individuals at Parkhead touted with the exit door.

On the chalkboard

Another face who will definitely be heading for the departure lounge is Scott Brown.

The 35-year-old’s time at Paradise is coming to an end this summer as the midfield veteran winds down his career in Glasgow and heads to Aberdeen.

Brown will become a player coach under Steven Glass at Pittodrie but will leave behind a considerable void in the middle of the park.

The Celtic skipper’s performances were mediocre this term but one area of his game that remained unquestionable was his leadership.

Even if now feels like the perfect time for him to depart, the Hoops will miss his tough tackling nature and his commitment to the cause.

The replacement

The natural successor in the middle of the park feels like Ismaila Soro.

The Ivorian has struggled for game time since penning terms in January 2020 but like Brown, his tenacious attitude is infectious.

There are few better tacklers in the entire Celtic squad with Soro registering as many as ten successful challenges in one game against Lille last year.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-manager-and-transfer-news-howe-favre-mcgregor-mccann-tierney” title=”Read the latest Celtic manager and transfer news!”]

Liam Shaw could also arrive and fill the spot in midfield but there are other unorthodox options that the incoming Hoops boss has to consider.

One of them needs to be Kristoffer Ajer. The Norwegian could leave for the Premier League this summer but if he stays, he should be well suited to stepping up into midfield.

Ajer came through the ranks as a defensive midfielder and although he’s now been moved into the backline, he could become a genuine star playing further forward. After all, it’s a position he’s played in on 19 occasions throughout his career to date.

The 23-year-old is a marauding figure from centre-half, ploughing forward with an unrelenting amount of energy. He can beat players for fun and push them over in a devastating fashion.

In the words of ACSOM presenter Paul John Dykes, Ajer is a “man mountain” at the back for Celtic but it feels like he’s more than equipped to play further forward.

A commanding figure, his defensive attributes would still be important but it would give Ajer more of a platform to rampage forward and carry the ball; two attributes that define his play style.

The 6 foot 6 pillar would also be allowed to do so knowing he has cover behind him, something that evidently isn’t the case when he plays at centre-back.

With a pass success rate of 87.5%, he’d also be able to keep things ticking over safely. If there’s one area that never fails to let him down, it’s his ball-playing capabilities.

The Norway international might not be as tough in the tackle as Brown but his tall figure would do enough to scare plenty of opponents. He’d be a perfect fit for the midfield.

AND in other news, Celtic must sign “outstanding” 21-goal animal, he terrorised Scott Brown this season…
