Ranji batsman Nagdev dies

Ramesh Nagdev, the former Gujarat player, died in the United States on Sunday aged 60.Nagdev, an attacking batsman who was born in Karachi and lived in San Jose, California, opened the innings with Sunil Gavaskar for Indian schools against the London schoolboys team in 1965-66.Nagdev represented Gujarat in the Ranji Trophy, opening the innings regularly with Nari Contractor, after playing for Bombay (now Mumbai) against the visiting Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) team in 1965 at the Brabourne Stadium. He also played for West Zone against the Australians, led by Bill Lawry, in a three-day tour match at Pune’s Nehru Stadium under the captaincy of Chandu Borde, another ex-India captain. In his career stretching from 1964-65 to 1969-70 Nagdev, who still holds the Bombay Schools record for the highest individual score in the Giles Shield tournament for senior boys (427, made in 1963-64), played 21 matches and accumulated 1164 runs at 36.He and Gavaskar also opened for Bombay University in the Rohintan Baria tournament and both played for the same college – Mumbai’s St Xavier’s. His highest first class score, 111, came in his last match against Baroda in Vadodara during February 1970.He is survived by his wife and two children.

Selection for South Africa Tests postponed

Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and Anil Kumble will have to undergo routine tests at the NCA © AFP

The selection of India’s squad for the first two Tests against South Africa has been postponed from March 9 to March 17. The selectors will now meet in Bangalore instead of Mumbai.Dilip Vengsarkar, the chairman of selectors, had requested a postponement for picking a squad for the Tests starting March 26, so that players could take part in the Deodhar Trophy scheduled between March 14 and 26. “The Deodhar Trophy is a significant tournament on the domestic calendar and would have lost its value if we had announced the Test team on Sunday,” Vengsarkar told Cricinfo. “We want those who returned immediately after the Test series in Australia to appear in this tournament. But those who stayed back for the CB one-day series deserve these 15 days of rest.”Anil Kumble, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, and Wasim Jaffer are expected to turn out for their respective zones in the tournament that marks a close to the 2007-08 domestic season. Sachin Tendulkar, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Ishant Sharma are among those who will get a break before the South Africa series. In an earlier interview, Vengsarkar had pointed out that it was with the amount of international cricket being played, it was difficult to get players in the national side to play domestic cricket.South Africa will arrive in Chennai on March 21 for three Tests, the first of which begins at the MA Chidambaram stadium on March 26. The next second and third Tests will be played in Ahmedabad and Kanpur between April 3-7 and 11-15.Meanwhile India’s Test specialists will have to undergo routine tests at the NCA over the next three days in accordance with a BCCI policy, which states that players who have been out of action must undergo periodic check-ups prior to all selections. Laxman, Jaffer, Ganguly, Dravid, VRV Singh, Pankaj Singh and Kumble haven’t been part of the side since the Adelaide Test in January and will need to go through fitness tests before their names are cleared for selection. They will undergo tests under Paul Chapman, the trainer at the NCA, Paul Close, the physiotherapist, and Dav Whatmore. The NCA will in turn forward the reports to the board on Saturday.

Kenya retain squad for Intercontinental Cup ties

Kenya have retained the same squad that featured in the first two Intercontinental Cup matches against Bermuda and Canada in Nairobi last year, for their forthcoming matches against Namibia and UAE.Kenya had a squad of 24 which has been cut to 14 led by Steve Tikolo. The only real question was whether Kennedy Otieno, back from a coaching and playing assignment in Australia, would be brought back into the fold, especially given some ill-advised comments he made about Kenyan cricket last year. The selectors opted to stick with a settled side. The match against Namibia was scheduled to be played in Nairobi at the end of the month but Kenya has been rocked by civil unrest since the highly disputed presidential elections on December 27. More than 250,000 people have fled their homes and over 500 killed in ongoing violence. The team leaves for UAE this Saturday ahead of their first match against Namibia on January 29. Kenya are unbeaten in this season’s Intercontinental Cup, and lead the table with 40 points and top the standings.Squad Steve Tikolo (capt), Thomas Odoyo, Jimmy Kamande, Alfred Luseno, Alex Obanda, Collins Obuya, David Obuya, Nehemiah Odhiambo, Peter Ongondo, Lameck Onyango, Elijah Otieno, Maurice Ouma (wk), Tony Suji, Hiren Varaiya

Marillier hits into record books

During the first encounter of the recently concluded five-match one-day series between India and Zimbabwe at Faridabad, Douglas Marillier scored the fastest fifty for Zimbabwe in ODI’s off just 21 balls with the help of nine fours and one six.Marillier’s fifty was the fifth fastest in LOI’s. He joins two other batsmen (New Zealand’s Lance Cairns and India’s Ajit Agarkar) who have also achieved it in 21 balls. The record of fastest half century in one day internationals is held by Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya who reached his fifty off 17 balls during his 76-run knock against Pakistan at Singapore on April 7,1996.Marillier’s fifty was also the quickest against India, bettering the 23 ball fifty by Pakistani Salim Malik during his unbeaten 72 at Calcutta on 18-2-1987.Marillier also became the first batsman in ODI history to register a fifty while batting at number ten. The previous highest score was the 46 by Pakistani Abdul Razzaq against South Africa at Durban on 3-4-1998. The previous highest score by a Zimbabwean in this position was the unbeaten 19 by Eddo Brandes against Sri Lanka at Worcester on 22-5-1999. Interestingly, the previous highest score by a number 10 against India was also by a Zimbabwe batsman – 29 by Andy Whittall at Bulawayo on 26-9-1998.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) today confirmed that a 26-year-oldmale who came on to the playing area at Old Trafford during the final npowerTest Match against Sri Lanka appeared before Trafford magistrates on 18 Juneand pleaded guilty to the offence of ‘Aggravated Trespass’ (Section 68 ofthe Criminal Justice and Public Order Act). He was given a 12-month conditional discharge and was ordered to pay costs.Tim Lamb, Chief Executive of the ECB, said: “I am delighted that our hard work during the winter is paying off. It demonstrates the close co-operation and determination of the ECB, match venues, police and government in keeping spectators off the playing area.”In advance of the NatWest Series it sends the clear message that we will not tolerate supporters coming on to the pitch and that, if they do so, they will find themselves subject to criminal prosecution.”

New Milton's title hopes receive a Leckford denting

New Milton’s Southern Electric Premier League, Division 3 promotion bid has received a severe setback. An unexpected eight-run defeat by 13th placed Leckford – on probably the club’s farewell appearance at the Ashley Sports Ground – has left Milton with a huge task in the final three weeks of the season if they are to grab the second promotion slot.Leaders Purbrook have taken a firm grip of the championship race after whipping Waterlooville by eight wickets at The Heath. The maximum 22-point win took them well clear of St Cross Symondians, whose visit to third-placed Hursley Park was one of seven Premier 3 matches to fall to the weather. Those two results mean that New Milton will have to win at Purbrook this Saturday – and beat Waterlooville and Hursley Park in their other games.Skipper Steve Watts blamed New Milton’s out-cricket as the prime reason for the defeat. "That’s probably as poorly as we’ve bowled and fielded for some time," he lamented.New Milton’s fielding stint had barely got under way before key all-rounder Iain Griffiths suffered a recurrence of a long standing back injury."He dived to stop the ball in the field and his back went," Watts explained. "It meant that Iain could neither bowl nor really bat, which effectively reduced us to ten men."Ben Neal (2-48) and Andy Snellgrove (2-48) achieved two early breakthroughs for New Milton, but left-hand opener Martyn Isherwood proved immovable for Leckford and produced a match-winning knock."Martyn dug in and batted very well in trying conditions," Watts added.Isherwood hit a match winning 90 and, with support from Andy Cattle (27), doubled the Leckford score at the crucial mid-innings stage. Eighth-wicket pair Simon Reeves and Steve Bolshow added a precious 25 before tea to take Leckford on to 198-8.Although Ryan Beck went cheaply to the economical Steve Hicks, New Milton got themselves in a good position at 55-1 through Steve Watts (25) and Richard Wilson (28), who both departed in quick succession. But Lee Beck, with his best innings of the season, kept New Milton’s victory bid alive."Lee batted superbly at a stage when we needed seven or eight runs an over," praised Watts. But when he perished – to a Reeves stumping off Nigel Marriott (4-53) – for a splendid 82, Milton’s prospects effectively ended."We needed 27 off about 21 balls at that stage and, with Iain (Griffiths) injured, it was game up," the New Milton skipper admitted. New Milton eventually finished eight runs short at 191-9.Purbrook, meanwhile, took a firm grip at the top, after reducing Waterlooville from a comfortable 56-0 (Chris Baumann 27) to 126 all out at The Heath.Left-armer Mark Stanley (4-29) triggered a top order collapse, Ville plunging to 67-5 and 84-7 after Purbrook had won a key toss.Seasoned off-spinner Kelvan Finch bowled a miserly 12-over spell in mid-innings – and was bowling when Ville’s Mick Hamson was bizarrely dismissed Handled the ball !Ville’s modest tally was never likely to test Purbrook, who romped to an eight-wicket win inside 32 overs, with South African Will Prozesky hitting 64 not out.The other seven Premier 3 matches were called off after the Friday afternoon storms.

Flintoff should have been fit sooner – MacLaurin

The outgoing chairman of the England and Wales cricket board, Lord MacLaurin, believes Andrew Flintoff did not take his recuperation from a summer hernia operation seriously enough.Flintoff has missed all three Test match defeats in Australia on the tour so far, but was called on to the field as a substitute during the second Test in Adelaide.”I think it is unfortunate,” MacLaurin told the BBC. “I think players have got to take responsibility for their own fitness and maybe Freddy did not take his recuperation as seriously as he should have done.””I think Flintoff was doing things in his recuperation that he probably shouldn`t have but that is between me, him and David Graveney (chairman ofselectors). Professional footballers are back playing within four or five weeks.”He had his operation way back in summer and should really have been fit by now. That is something we have got to look at and I know that is something DavidGraveney is aware of.”MacLaurin defended England`s decision to take Darren Gough, who was eventually sent home after failing to recover from a long-standing knee injury.”It was a gamble taking Gough but a fit Gough would have been a big plus toour side if he was able to play.”The ECB chairman also warned that there would be no quick fixes to England’s plight after the national team’s humiliation down under.”You can`t suddenly wave a magic wand and become best in the world. What you do is put down some foundations for the future, which is what we have done. We set up central contracts as well as the Academy, which is in its second year.”The Australian side has been going through their Academy, which teaches themthe skills of the game and the mental capability to play at the highest level.”I can understand the reaction by cricket followers about the results inAustralia but let us not forget they have just beaten South African and Pakistanout of sight and we have been very, very unfortunate with injuries and have notplayed our best side.”We have to be patient. There is no knee-jerk reaction, We have put everything in place for the future and we have just got to see it through now. Our mission statement says we need to be best in the world by 2007 and it is going to take that time.”Cricket has changed over the years. There has to be a mental capability anda lot of our players really haven’t seen that side of cricket before. We have got some very good young players coming through and I would hope that within a couple of years or so our Test side will be made up of most of the players that have come through the Academy.”There is a tough side to Australian cricket and our county game does notgive it to our players. That is why the Academy is so important to us and has been very important to the Australians. There is a mental capability that we can give them that prepares them better for international cricket and that is what we are doing.”I would like to see this summer a lot of our younger players coming in (to the Test side) and may be it will take a year or so, but give them experience atinternational level and we will start to build a side like Australia havegot.”MacLaurin also repeated his backing for the England captain Nasser Hussain following England’s innings defeat at Perth which ensured Australia’s retention of the Ashes.”I have written to Nasser and I think it would be extremely sad if he steppeddown,” said MacLaurin, who steps down from his position at the end of theyear. “We need his experience, we need all the good things that Nasser has to bring the young players into the side.”He is a tough man and has got a very good partnership with (coach) DuncanFletcher. I know that Duncan is very keen to keep him, I am certainly very keento keep him. It would be bad for English cricket if he decided to step away.”Let`s not have knee-jerk reaction after the very, very disappointing seriesin Australia. Let`s plan, let`s look at it and then English cricket will flourish.Yesterday, MacLaurin`s replacement David Morgan, former Glamorgan chairman, also gave Hussain his backing.”He is still the man to lead England,” said Morgan. “Against the background of playing an extremely strong and well-organised Australian team, with depleted forces, I do believe the task for Nasser has been a huge one and it has been a very difficult time for him.”I will give him every backing and every encouragement, and I am verysympathetic to the huge task he and the team have been facing against a verystrong side with depleted forces.”

Dragons record their first win of the season

The Glamorgan Dragons opened their Norwich Union League season with a welldeserved 20 run victory against the Durham Dynamos at Sophia Gardens.Such a result though had seemed unlikely in the first hour of the game as Glamorgan slumped to 49-5. But an attractive 58 run partnership between Mike Powell and Mark Wallace restored the Welsh county`s fortunes, and by the end of their 45 over allocation, they had reached a more respectable total of161-8.In reply, the Durham batsmen never got into their stride as Mike Kasprowicz had a dream debut in the Dragons colours, with the Australian taking three wickets in a fiery spell with the new ball. With Andrew Davies in miserly form at the other end, Durham stuttered to 27-3 in the opening 12 overs – a start from which they never recovered.Spinners Robert Croft and Dean Cosker further contained the Durham batsmen, and a measure of their control over the visitors was that the two spinners onlyconceded three boundaries during their 18 over spell.Andy Pratt, the Durham wicket-keeper, made a belated bid to up the tempo, buthe fell to Andrew Davies who returned to pick up two wickets in a disciplinedcomeback spell which helped to settle the game in the Dragons favour.
